Question from Jhgertz (23:31, 12 February 2024)

Hello, I'm honored to be assigned to you. Can you please explain to me how I create a page. Thank you so very much. --Jhgertz (talk) 23:31, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

@Jhgertz What are you looking to write about? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 05:06, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
I would like to create a page for my cousin's rock band Violet Daybed. You can find them on spotify and youtube music. They're actually very good.
Thank you for the reply. Jhgertz (talk) 12:52, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
I have seen I will need some serious help in creating the article if I'll even be allowed to. I hope so because this band deserves a page. They aren't famous now, but they will be. Jhgertz (talk) 18:29, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
@Jhgertz Unfortunately Wikipedia does not exist to make people famous. We only cover subjects which are notable, i.e. already known. That is usually demonstrated by significant media coverage in books, newspapers, news sites, and so on. If you'd like to help out editing in general, you're more than welcome to, and I'd love to answer questions you might have. But trying to create a page for someone you know is almost always doomed to failure. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 18:51, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
So are you saying that wikepedia will not allow me to create the page? They already have a small measure of fame. 2600:6C48:427F:F192:D122:A1CE:1EDC:1E76 (talk) 22:46, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
@Jhgertz Can you link me three news articles that talk about them? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 00:27, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
Unfortunately I cannot, so I guess I have my answer. Thank you for your time and veracity. 2600:6C48:427F:F192:1424:899B:BFFA:E2C7 (talk) 05:40, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
please define relevant article. They have an album and an ep on all of the music apps. Doesn't that make them relevant enough for a page? Jhgertz (talk) 01:29, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
@Jhgertz Having music is not enough. We're not gonna write about every SoundCloud rapper. We judge notability by whether they have media coverage. So, if there aren't books, newspapers, magazines, or some web articles about them, they aren't notable. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 23:24, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
don't be so condescending and arrogant please. I assure you that you are not that important. They'll be famous one day(not rappers btw...musicians and songwriters), and I promise you that you will be editing their page. Jhgertz (talk) 09:31, 24 February 2024 (UTC)

Question from GrexJr (02:39, 27 February 2024)

Hey there! I found a citation that appears to be wrong in an article, and created this account to address it. Is there any sort of process as to remediating the wrong information? I created a topic in the article's talk section, but am unsure if there is more to do. Thanks!

WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hello CaptainEek, Could you help me expand a Wiki Article I am working on? Its name is "UNSINKABLE: Titanic Untold". I made a rough idea of what the article would be and I would like to expand it (though would be at a later date). If you could expand it a bit and read over it to make sure its grammatically correct and the Infoboxes are all correct (as I am new to them).

Question from Darenpowell (13:42, 16 March 2024)

Hi Captain! I joined Wikipedia to create wikipedia pages about people I know and possibly … one about myself. i am grateful to have a mentor 🙏. i presume it is best to construct and edit a person’s wikipedia page offline first! i would truly welcome and appreciate your kind input and guidance! Daren --Darenpowell (talk) 13:42, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

@Darenpowell Glad to have you join, and I wish you happy editing! I should note that writing about people you know is a bit of a minefield. At a minimum, you must disclose that you have a conflict of interest, per the COI rules. We generally advise against writing about subjects you have a COI with. As for writing about yourself, I would always recommend against that. If you are notable (i.e. worthy for inclusion in Wikipedia), someone will in time create a page for you in time. Writing your own page is basically impossible to do while also complying with policy, and is usually a bad look (the press just loves to point out when people edit their own Wikipedia pages). As for creating online v. offline, you can always start an article in WP:DRAFT space first, or in your user sandbox (which you can create at User:Darenpowell/sandbox). Question from KEmel49 (18:44, 18 March 2024)

How can i sign like you in talk page. --KEmel49 (talk) 18:44, 18 March 2024 (UTC)

@KEmel49 You can edit your WP:SIGNATURE by going to preferences (top right of the screen), scrolling down to the signature section, and amending it. Creating highly customized signatures requires some knowledge of HTML coding. Wikipedia:Signatures#Customizing_your_signature has more details. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 19:14, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
If i got that than my signature should to be something like that isn't it.BTW many many thanks to youcaptain.
KEmel49t@lk (t@lk) 19:39, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
@KEmel49 You've done something wrong, though without seeing exactly what you typed in the signature box I'm not sure what you did wrong, as your signatures is showing {{CURRENTTIME}}, {{CURRENTDAY}} {{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTYEAR}}, which will always display what time it is now, not what time it is when you made your signature. Those templates need to be subsituted, so that instead it looks like: {{subst:CURRENTTIME}}, {{subst:CURRENTDAY}} {{subst:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{subst:CURRENTYEAR}}, which will substitute the time of your signing instead of the template, which will automatically update. (Templates are anything in double curly brackets). CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 19:33, 18 March 2024 (UTC)

@Ultradiamiondchicken Well if it's the thing you've written on your user page, that doesn't sound like a real thing. Wikipedia only covers topics which have received significant coverage in reliable sources, thus establishing their notability. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 23:52, 25 March 2024 (UTC)

Questions, request for help and advice

Greetings, CaptainEek. First of all, my apologies for bothering you but I seem to have found myself in a situation where I need some advice, and possibly some help.

Recently, after the Portuguese elections, I noticed that some of the Portuguese parties here on Wikipedia had their political "position" either incorrect or unnecessarily vague (from x to y, for example). Since it was a small quick fix, I edited the aforementioned information and left at that. Full disclosure, I'm aware I should've sourced the information, but what was there before was also unsourced. I admit my fault on that point, in fact, I reverted the edit myself on this page:

Portuguese Labour Party

For further context, I've been registered on Wikipedia since August of 2010 and never had a fight with anyone. There were some content disputes, but it was all resolved in Talk pages prior to any action being used or needed, and that's always my expectation when I make a new edit.

However, out of the blue, a user called Vif12vf (and, apparently, from Norway) reverted my edit without any attempt to talk to me before, and the proceeded to go to my Talk page to accuse me of Disruption, and warn me of potential banning.

I took this personally, as I didn't act in bad faith, but was treated as I did.

In fact, all throughout Wikipedia there are warnings of "assuming good faith" before starting a fight, but this user didn't seem to care.

My second mistake here was that I reverted the reversion (essentially starting the revert war), and typed some comments that, in hindsight, I shouldn't have (implying that, because he's from Norway not Portugal, he'd have less knowledge on the topic - which may be true, but in hindsight, irrelevant), which became obvious as the user in question reverted my reversion of his reversion. In anger, I reverted it one more time.

About one hour later, I realized this wasn't going to end well, so I reverted the whole thing back to what it was before I made the original edit, and started to look at formal ways to deal with this.

I noticed that the user's reverts had a Twinkle tag, and after reading its page, it seemed to me that the user was guilty of "Abuse" as described on Twinkle page. So I dug deeper and, after confronting the user on his Talk page, I noticed that other users were also complaining of these spontaneous reverts without any type of prior communication.

Since then, I tried to ask for advice on the Administrators' noticeboard, but someone called Nate decided to change my request for information/advice into a full-fledged report.

Unfortunately, this whole situation is tiring, and I just want it to be over. So here is where I need your help understanding how to move on from this:

1 - my comments, which I regret, are still visible in the View History page. Is this a case where Oversight can be used to remove what I said (as it can be perceived as an attack on the other user)?

2 - is Vif12vf use of Twinkle in the way he's doing (or his reverts in general) acceptable or is it abuse?

3 - finally, what would you advise me to do at this point?

Sorry for the length of this question/request. Thank you in advance for your input. Raven-14 (talk) 05:51, 26 March 2024 (UTC)

@Raven-14
  1. Your comments are quite mild, so do not qualify for oversight, nor would they qualify for revision deletion. I think your admission here that you regret them, along with an understanding that you will move past them, should be sufficient. Don't worry, I have some gaffes of mine still out there too, you live and you learn :)
  2. His reversion of you on Portuguese labor party was appropriate. You changed the party's affiliation without providing a reliable source to back up the change. Twinkle is a semi-automated tool which helps with making certain edits faster. The Twinkle warning that you got on your page was boilerplate; while I would advise User:Vif12vf to be careful about dispensing the nastily worded boiler plate and consider giving customized feedback wherever possible, he was within his rights to give you that warning. I'm sorry this got so far without someone just sitting down and explaining this to you in layman's terms.
  3. I'd treat this a learning experience. Every editor has some bumps along the way. I did plenty of dumb things before I got elected to adminship; its part of the process. If you want to make changes to pages like say changing what a party's politics are, you'll need to familiarize yourself with using reliable sources, and making and using citations appropriately. I.e., to say that the Portuguese labor party is left-wing, you'll need a reliable source which says as much. If you have questions on how to go about that, let me know and I can give more guidance.
CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 06:18, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
Hello again.
First of all, thank you for the reply, and for the calm, non-aggressive, way you responded - was refreshing, especially after the way most users talked to me recently.
I understand your response and I agree, the only thing left to do is just move on.
I appreciate your offer of helping me out become a better Wikipedia editor but, after some thought, I realize it's best if I just quit altogether. If you check my profile you'll se that, even though I'm registered since 2010, I only got my "100 edits" badge in 2024 - that means I was never a regular editor to begin with.
So my remaining question is, can you help me with a courtesy vanish?
And do I have to logout first for it to take effect? I'm asking because I don't want to accidentally log back in after it's done.
Thank you. Raven-14 (talk) 00:58, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
@Raven-14 I think vanishing would be extreme and not warranted by the circumstances. I know it's not fun to have this kind of stuff happen, but you didn't get banned or pick up any sanctions, so that's a win in my book (along the lines of "any landing you can walk away from is a good landing"). And remember, if you edit after vanishing, people could still be able to link you to your previous account, since the process isn't foolproof. You seem like a valuable and interesting fellow, and I hope you stick around and keep editing. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 01:21, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
I appreciate your kind words but, as I said, I thought about it and I'm sure of it.
In fact, if I did get a ban or sanction (as you say), then I wouldn't be able to ask for a courtesy vanish, would I? It's best to take the opportunity while the account is in good standing.
To further your analogy, I walked away from this landing, yes, but that doesn't mean I want to ever get inside a plane again.
I understand it's not foolproof as a complete account deletion doesn't seem to be possible, but from what I've been reading around, a courtesy vanish is the closest a member can be of being gone for good - and it's only a risk if I tried to return, which I'm 100% certain I won't.
As I said, in fourteen years, I only made around one hundred edits... there's zero risk of me coming back. Not on this account, or any other.
I take it from your words that being logged in isn't the problem, it's just if I do any edits (replying in your Talk page counts, I believe). So it's fine, I'll wait for your confirmation of it being done, and log out afterwards.
Please.
And thank you. Raven-14 (talk) 02:12, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
@Raven-14 I don't feel comfortable vanishing you. You can try asking someone else. I'm sorry to see you go. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 02:21, 27 March 2024 (UTC)

Regarding your arbitrary accusation

You are telling me that I am a bad fit for the project. This is actually a very serious accusation almost pretty much like wanting me out of the project. As such, I don't thjnk it is anywhere near fair or objective or appropriate for an arbitrator to base such accusation in one diff of my dispute with an admin without even conducting an objective analysis of my overall editing history, which would show many instances where I am receptive and even seek out objective criticism. Sincerely, Thinker78 (talk) 00:58, 2 April 2024 (UTC)

@Thinker78 For starters, I clarified that my comments were made outside my role as an admin or arbitrator. Second, yes, a WP:BOOMERANG implies that action be taken against filers. Does that mean you should be banned? Hopefully not. Are there lesser sanctions that might help you remain a productive editor? I hope so. But your inability to take feedback is becoming an issue that is soaking up huge amounts of editor time. Third, no, I have not reviewed all ~20,000 edits you have ever made. I see that you have done much good work for the project, and that work is appreciated. But nobody is immune from sanction merely because of their past work. The community has banned people with 25 times more edits than you have. I'm not sure what you're hoping to achieve with this crusade, but you really need to listen to the chorus of people telling you that you were in the wrong. It is okay to own up to your mistakes. Wikipedia expects you to accept your mistakes, learn from them, and grow. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 01:21, 2 April 2024 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello CaptainEek,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

Framgate

CaptainEek, your statement that We desyssoped Fram in part for harassment is factually incorrect. Fram was desysopped by the WMF Office at the behest of Trust and Safety. Only Arbcom was given access to the (partially redacted) evidence against them, so I am not privy to the specific charges, but harassment features in the ensuing Arbcom case. Arbcom decided to vacate Fram's ban from English Wikipedia but to "[take] over the decision to remove Fram's administrator tools". There was an extensive negative response in the community to this latter decision, which despite Fram's withdrawal from their second RfA, leads me to consider your statement enough of a misstatement to request you modify it. Question from SamaelFineArts (21:00, 8 April 2024)

Hello! I was asked to join Wikipedia to create a page for Norwegian artist Samael. So far I have only played around in the sandbox using Banksy as a template. It is much harder to create a good article than I envisioned. Seems I am unable to upload any files/artwork yet also. Any tips on how to create a good page for the digital (visual) artist called Samael? (I know there is a band with the same name, that can cause possible problems?) Are there people who could work with me on creating this page? I have the information and pictures needed, but not the know-how on how to do it properly. --SamaelFineArts (talk) 21:00, 8 April 2024 (UTC)

@SamaelFineArts It is certainly an undertaking to create a page from scratch. A few things to know: first, you will need to make sure you appropriately disclose any conflict of interest, and whether you are being WP:PAID to edit about the subject. Don't worry, disclosing won't stop you from doing so, we just want our editors to be transparent. Next, you will need to find significant coverage of Samael in reliable sources, so as to prove their notability (i.e. suitability for having a Wikipedia page in the first place). We don't write about just anyone. As for people who could work with you, you can ask questions at the WP:TEAHOUSE, as well as the Articles for Creation Help Desk, but they will not write the article for you. WikiCup 2024 April newsletter

We are approaching the end of the 2024 WikiCup's second round, with a little over two weeks remaining. Currently, contestants must score at least 105 points to progress to the third round.

Our current top scorers are as follows:

Competitors may submit work for the second round until the end of 28 April, and the third round starts 1 May. Remember that only competitors with the top 32 scores will make it through to the third round. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs. As a reminder, competitors are strictly prohibited from gaming Wikipedia policies or processes to receive more points.

If you would like to learn more about rules and scoring for the 2024 WikiCup, please read Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Further questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Question from Jesspisme (17:52, 17 April 2024)

We are the creators of the P.J. Whelihans Pub + Restaurant Logo and the logo/page image that is on their page now is very old. I have an updated logo. How do i update the page image on that page? --Jesspisme (talk) 17:52, 17 April 2024 (UTC)

@Jesspisme The process is a bit complicated. First, go to Special:Upload. Upload your file. For licensing, choose "Logo." In the summary, explain who created it and what it is for. Explain that you are associated with the business. Then, post the link to the file on my page, and I'll swap it into the article for you. I advise against directly editing the article, since you have a conflict of interest and may qualify as paid editors. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 20:35, 17 April 2024 (UTC)

Question from Immaneul (09:42, 24 April 2024)

Hello, I'm immenul, can i add any information in the wikipedia according to my level of knowledge? --Immaneul (talk) 09:42, 24 April 2024 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Hi User:Immaneul and welcome to Wikipedia. Adding information on Wikipedia is a very key factor of maintaining this encyclopaedia. However, we work with sources from reliable sources (look at WP:RS—to know what we call reliable sources). Adding information you know is called original research (see WP:OR—for what we call original research). Such can be added only if it is supported by a verifiable/reliable source. I hope you're cleared now. Thanks and see the welcome message on your talk page for more tutorials. — Safari ScribeEdits! Talk! 11:37, 24 April 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 May newsletter

The second round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 April. This round was particularly competitive: each of the 32 contestants who advanced to Round 3 scored at least 141 points. This is the highest number of points required to advance to Round 3 since 2014.

The following scorers in Round 2 all scored more than 500 points:

The full scores for Round 2 can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 18 featured articles, 22 featured lists, and 186 good articles, 76 in the news credits and at least 200 did you know credits. They have conducted 165 featured article reviews, as well as 399 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 21 articles to featured topics and good topics.

Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed during Round 3, which starts on 1 May at 00:00 (UTC).

Question from DrChunder (09:17, 26 April 2024)

Ahoy, Captain! I'm a longtime user and supporter of Wikipedia, and a mentor of mine suggested taking up editing as a way to gain in-depth understanding of a subject. If I may ask, what are some of the pitfalls young Wiki editors find themselves sliding into, and how might these be avoided?

Warm regards, DrChunder --DrChunder (talk) 09:17, 26 April 2024 (UTC)

@DrChunder Well there are a lot of potential pitfalls; I think it really depends on what you're interested in. What sort of subjects do you like? I've left a message on your talk page with some various starter links that you should peruse as well. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 18:39, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
@CaptainEek Thanks for the message! I study neuroscience and elementary physics, which are fields rife with bad science communication, so I'm looking for tips on vetting sources and editing for proper encyclopedic tone.
Thanks!
DrChunder (talk) 17:40, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
@DrChunder Learning about how to use sources on Wikipedia can be a bit of a long process, so I recommend patience and enthusiasm as your best tools. Engage with other editors in a WP:CIVIL manner and talk things out. Be open to the fact that others might WP:BRD your edits. Read about WP:RS and WP:NPOV. Be curious. Follows links and read our internal documentation. And if you run into questions or have problems, just let me know and I'll try to help out! CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 18:25, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

Copyediting

Hey there! I love your user page. I want to make wikipedia even better than it already is. I was wondering if the small edits I've made so far have been good (not sure if wikipedia logs what exactly what user contributed what though)

Thanks for your work here again. Megaman2003 (talk) 14:30, 5 April 2024 (UTC)

@Megaman2003 Generally looks good. With this edit to New Adventures I would caution that you need to cite to a reliable source when you add new information. Keep up the good work! CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 22:08, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
Hello again! I want to add a picture to an article, more specifically a movie poster for a movie. What exactly do I answer when uploading to wikipedia commons about this? Megaman2003 (talk) 18:24, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
@Megaman2003 Movie posters are a bit tricky, as they are copyrighted. For us to include a movie poster requires us to do so under WP:FAIRUSE. That means that you have to upload the smallest reasonable resolution of the poster, and it can only be used very sparingly. Do not upload such a work to Commons. Instead, upload it here on Wikipedia only, so that the file stays local, thereby minimizing its use and protecting us from copyright problems. When uploading it, you need to be honest and frank: it isn't your work. Someone else made it, and someone else owns the copyright. You are using it under fair use. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 05:42, 12 April 2024 (UTC)
Hello again! I was thinking of making articles of albums from my favorite band, the Megas. They're popular with mega man fans and have spawned fanart and fanfiction, but I'm not sure they're popular enough to justify it. I would also like to make one for another band I like, d3adc0de. Would that be acceptable? Megaman2003 (talk) 20:18, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
@Megaman2003 It can be a bit tricky to create new articles from scratch, especially when it comes to bands. Everyone in the world wants their band on Wikipedia...but most of them don't qualify. In order to qualify, a band needs to meet WP:BAND. Take a look at that link and see if you think any of them are met. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 04:54, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

--KEmel49 (talk) 20:00, 12 May 2024 (UTC)

@KEmel49 It will need to be uploaded locally here. Since it is an album cover, which is copyrighted, it must be uploaded per WP:FAIRUSE, meaning it must be done at the lowest reasonable resolution, and used in the fewest possible articles. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 00:21, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

What do I put when I edit a page and it's not a major change? --HamBeregurer (talk) 04:35, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

@HamBeregurer For small typo fixes I'll often say "copyedit" in the edit summary (which I may abbreviate as "ce"). Notice

The article Statistics of the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The page has gone into disrepair and is no longer updated. Any material information remaining on this page is either replicated or summerised on the main COVID-19 pandemic in Australia page. Many of the charts from template pages no longer load. The page was originally created to reduce bulk on the main page and make it more readable during the pandemic. It is no longer required for this purpose and given no one is keeping it up to date, it ceases to have any material function. If there is no objection to this deletion, I will also propose that any associated template pages be deleted if they were created solely to be linked to this page (WP:DP: Redundant or otherwise useless templates), and main page be edited to remove the link to this page.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:01, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

In need of advice

Hi CaptainEek, hope you're doing well. Seeing as you blocked BerkBerk68 for Meatpuppetry and off-Wiki canvassing via Discord due to the evidence I presented, I thought this might be the right place to come. There is a similar issue now [1]. Though my ANI thread is getting ignored, I dunno why, it's literally the same scenario as the previous Discord case about BerkBerk68 and co., though that one was reported to WP:AN instead of WP:ANI. And now I am getting criticized for putting a DNAU, god forbid I want to stop users violating our rules, especially at such large-scale (at this rate they will gain monopoly over a large section of Wiki articles). I get that the report is incredibly long and thus not very reader friendly, but I can't make it any shorter - it also took countless hours to compile those diffs. Do you have any advice on what to do? Should I just give up? HistoryofIran (talk) 17:39, 24 May 2024 (UTC)

@HistoryofIran I've mentioned this on the Arb list to see if we can't get back to you. Though I must ask: what exact rule is Jonharojjashi breaking? Merely editing in a controversial area and agreeing with folks is not a crime, even if those folks may themselves be problematic or rule breakers. I've seen the private evidence and I can't say they're smoking guns, and it doesn't look like Jonharojjashi is socking. So in one sentence, what exactly is the wrongful action? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 19:12, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
Thanks CaptainEek. In one sentence; Meatpuppetry and off-Wiki canvassing via Discord. HistoryofIran (talk) 19:20, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
@HistoryofIran I'm not sure the evidence really shows that. Absent stronger evidence of actual coordination, I suggest that you simply continue to engage in best practices: focus on building consensus. I know that's not the answer you wanted to hear, but based on what we have, I don't think we can do more at this time, and clearly no one else felt compelled while it was at AN. If Jonharojjashi is looking to add controversial opinions, make sure there is consensus against them to allow for easy removal/reverts. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 16:41, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
I see, thank you CaptainEek. HistoryofIran (talk) 20:18, 28 May 2024 (UTC)

Today's TFA, Felix M. Warburg House, was written by Vami_IV and Epicgenius, introduced: "This article is about another of the great houses that once lined Fifth Avenue in New York. Specifically, this is the mansion of Felix M. Warburg, a Jewish financier who ignored fears of anti-Semitic reprisal to his decided to build himself a big Gothic manor in the middle of New York City. Although the Warburgs no longer remain, their legacy does: the museum is now the home of the Jewish Museum (Manhattan) and the building largely survives as they left it. No, just the piece is that age - I doubt I would have liked to sing at the time when it was so difficult for women to sing in a piece like that as described in the article. - No, my actual last performance of it was in 2022, - look at "music". Before - my first if we don't count a sing-along when I got hopelessly lost in the Libera me - was in 2010, at the place pictured in my user's infobox. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:25, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

Translating of articles

I was going to translate an article from Bengali Wikipedia to english. The references used in bn wiki are from Bengali language journal or website.should i have to look out for English articles or use those references from bn wiki.
--kemel49(connect)(contri) 21:37, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

@KEmel49 You can use non-english language sources, though it can be helpful to provide translations in the footnotes. And if you can find English language sources to supplement that will help. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 21:41, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
@CaptainEek, what if i use {{cite web}} template's language parameter.i was thinking about that but the problem is that the source will still remains as it is
--kemel49(connect)(contri) 21:45, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
@KEmel49 Yeah thats fine. What I meant was you can use the quote parameter to provide a translated quote from the source. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 21:50, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

Question from TheAuditor20 (10:51, 12 July 2024)

Hi there, I’ve created a new draft for brimsdown fc. I’m waiting for it to be approved and was hoping it could be checked if it meets the criteria and would like the page redirected to the new page. --TheAuditor20 (talk) 10:51, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

WPTC

It took me a minute or so to decipher "WPTC" in this comment about the Historical elections motion. Even for those who do get what it means straight away, a link to Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/WikiProject Tropical Cyclones so memories can be refreshed would be handy. Thryduulf (talk) 22:54, 19 July 2024 (UTC)

@Thryduulf Will do, thanks for pointing that out. So easy to become lost in the acronym sauce, as it were. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 22:55, 19 July 2024 (UTC)

Did you just say

you hope arbcom can lay out private parts a little more completely at some point? 😂 Levivich (talk) 00:34, 20 July 2024 (UTC)

@Levivich Oh dear me, unfortunate choice of wording there. One usually has to take ArbCom to dinner first :P CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 00:39, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
Which is very expensive because there's like a dozen of them. That reminds me of a joke: Five Wikipedia arbitrators go out to dinner. The server asks, "What are you having?" The first arb says they'll wait to order until they hear what everyone else is ordering. The second arb says they'll wait to order to give time for the kitchen staff to make recommendations. The third arb says they're leaning towards the chicken, but they want to hear what the chicken has to say first. The fourth arb suggests skipping the orders and just paying the bill. The fifth arb says they're not available for dinner tonight, stands up and leaves the table, but then comes back later for dessert. Levivich (talk) 05:45, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
"They want to hear what the chicken has to say first" 🤣 Having had dinner with quite a number of arbs, I'd say they actually tend to make pretty good dinner guests! Though I doubt that dinner based arbitration will soon overtake our regular modes of arbitration :P CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 05:51, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
It could work: parties might agree to pay for dinner based arbitration--better than arbs deciding remedies on an empty stomach! Levivich (talk) 06:08, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
Would the parties receive their just desserts? Newyorkbrad (talk) 14:04, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
LOL! I am stealing that for the next draft of the arbcom dinner joke. Levivich (talk) 15:43, 20 July 2024 (UTC)

Hi, got a user adding misinformation

On the Monsterverse page, they keep removing names of confirmed known characters and adding a confirmed nonexistent character to the entry for Godzilla King of the Monsters. just want some help keeping information accurate there. Lindenhs (talk) 23:19, 19 July 2024 (UTC)

@Lindenhs Hi! Glad to see you editing Wikipedia. So my first question here is can you link to the source you're referring to? We rely on reliable published sources to back up our articles. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 23:23, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
Trying to get a public one but I regularly talk with people officially involved with the MV, the characters that keep getting removed were confirmed onscreen in multiple films and by Legendary a few times.
The nonexistent character is Sargon who has never been seen or referenced ever and was confirmed by the comic/novel writer for the MV Greg Keyes not to exist in a private chat I got permission to share. Here:
https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/f6fc77d3-a4c8-4df5-bafe-bebf68ae3090/scale-to-width/755
I am aware this isn’t the ideal way to do it, and as said I’m trying to get a more public statement from them. However the evidence is there as all other Titans in KOTM have on screen sources unless they are novel or comic exclusives.
If you need more then say so from me I will try getting a better source. Lindenhs (talk) 23:32, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
@Lindenhs Well I certainly applaud your networking skills for connecting with Mr. Keyes. But a text chat is what we call original research, which is generally disallowed. The issue is it has no publisher, so a reader can't easily verify if its true for themselves. But the Newsweek article at [2] does mention Sargon. Now, there might be a nuance here that I'm missing, perhaps there's a reason why its included in the Newsweek article that could be clarified in our article? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 23:37, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
It was a joke on Bloody Disgusting that Newsweek copy pasted.
the joke was “Titanus Sargon in Mexico” as a reference to Sargon of Akkad aka Carl Benjamin a racist/sexist YouTuber and later politician who threatened to take over Mexico and was jokingly called Sargon of Mexico.
It’s literally just that.
Carl Benjamin Lindenhs (talk) 23:45, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
I did make a public post to see if I can get a public direct comment on it however and if I get a reply I’ll link it if that works? Lindenhs (talk) 23:48, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
Hey can you please talk to the user who keeps undoing the edit and removing the confirmed characters? Lindenhs (talk) 18:59, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
I've been keeping an eye on the talk page. Things seem to be productive so far. Wikipedia follows a model called bold revert discuss. We want people to be bold and change and improve the encyclopedia. But if someone makes a change, and someone else disagrees with it, the change can be reverted. The person who made the change in the first place is not entitled to revert that reversion. Instead, the article stays in the status quo ante version, while both parties discuss the merits of the issue. You're currently in the merits of the issue portion of the discussion. You should keep engaging on the talk page. While your claim appears to have some merit as to the missing characters, the other editor is pointing out that you'll need a better source to prove that Sargon isn't in the monsterverse. Please don't change the text of the article until you've come to a conclusion on the talk page. If you reach an impasse let me know and we can go from there. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 19:31, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
@Lindenhs forgot to ping you. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 19:32, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
I’m apparently about to get banned… Lindenhs (talk) 19:35, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
I sent some links on the talk page directly from the film… but if trying to update information to be up to date with information that’s been available for 10 years now and debunks those old articles is apparently a ban offense I don’t see the point.
btw I’m an admin on one of the Godzilla wikis, this information can be corroborated by both existing Godzilla wikis. Lindenhs (talk) 19:37, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
Probably getting banned soon so oh well.. at least I tried I guess. Lindenhs (talk) 19:40, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
Well you won't get banned if you just stop edit warring. Perhaps your wiki works different than ours, but here, you don't edit back and forth. You talk it out. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 19:44, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
We also don’t allow it, but I did try talking it out and sent multiple sources, screenshots, etc but they didn’t listen.
both on their talk page and mine.
the information on these characters is available from legendary on twitter (which I don’t have so can’t provide links) and Instagram, as well as official material like the novels and comics.
like Mokele has multiple chapters dedicated to his rampage in KOTM including a complete description of him. Lindenhs (talk) 19:52, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
If I’m able to get one of the people I’m friends with who work with Legendary to confirm any information in anyway that’s public even as a comment on a post I make, would that count? Lindenhs (talk) 19:58, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
@Lindenhs I have a several hour meeting I have to go to right now but if you can hold off from making more edits or getting yourself trouble I will try to be helpful about this in a few hours. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 20:00, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
Cause I can provide a few of those now?
Like Dougherty in the pinned comment here talking about Orochi.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ9r6MQM_xrmgBz2_6LDWiTLkMcAJp6aN5j-Bg0/?igsh=eWFndW43ZzFpNWh1 Lindenhs (talk) 20:00, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
I’m giving up…
like it’s not that hard for the person arguing with me to check if the accounts I’m referring to are legit, or to access the comics and novels.
If information is not allowed to be updated because nobody is willing to check or look into new information provided publicly, what’s the point? Lindenhs (talk) 06:00, 21 July 2024 (UTC)

@Lindenhs I think part of the issue here is that there are different sourcing standards for a fandom wiki vs. Wikipedia. Fandom wikis often heavily draw from the source material, as a primary source. But Wikipedia has a generally strong aversion to relying on the source material. Instead, we rely on secondary sources, i.e. sources that have talked about the original source. So we're not going to rely on what authors themselves are saying about their work. Nor are we really dedicated to that level of fandom detail. That's why fandom wikis exist: they go into much greater detail than we do, and are full of cool and dedicated fans who pore over the source material to keep things accurate. But that sort of original research is just not what we do on Wikipedia. We say what the secondary sources say. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 06:37, 21 July 2024 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind greeting. I was distressed to see that somebody wanted to delete an entry, so I used the talk page function to express my displeasure. Is that the correct thing to do? I wanted to respond directly to the person who recommended deleting it, but didn't know how to reach him directly. --Mariashafferg (talk) 17:57, 31 July 2024 (UTC)

@Mariashafferg The process being used here is called a WP:PROD, which is a sort of easy to oppose deletion process, which can be undone by anyone for any reason. I have thus unprodded it. There is now a chance that the article could be put up for formal deletion, which is WP:AFD. If it is put up for more formal deletion, let me know and I can guide you through the process. Ahhooooyyy, CaptainEek!! coming alongside if I may. request permission to come aboard, and repair aft to the wardroom, where we might discuss the scuttlebutt 'round the fleet!

here's a question for you. do ye think we might need to fix WP:OR, perchance, at all? i can add details, if ye wish! Sm8900 (talk) 16:15, 13 August 2024 (UTC)

@Sm8900 with regards to OR, how so? I think I lack appropriate context for the problem. With regards to ward rooms, I recently toured the USS Midway (CV-41) and that thing is made of so many rooms, including several ward rooms I believe. And as for scuttlebutt, rather amusingly, it had an entire display about scuttlebutts. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 20:18, 14 August 2024 (UTC)

@DJ Best Academy Howdy hello and welcome to Wikipedia! For starters, you can look at your talk page and see a some welcome messages that have been left for you, which has some starting points. Beyond that, there's no one way to learn to edit Wikipedia. I'd suggest finding a page on a subject you're interested in, reading it, and seeing if any typos or other issues stand out at you. Beyond that, then I'd suggest thinking what the article does well or doesn't do well, and how you might research sources to improve it. Give some of the links on your talk page a try, and if you get stuck or have questions, ask me a follow-up question here. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 04:06, 24 August 2024 (UTC)
