Information icon Hello, I'm 331dot. I noticed that you made a change to an article, Alf Kumalo, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so! If you need guidance on referencing, please see the referencing for beginners tutorial, or if you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Please note that personal knowledge is not sufficient as a source for a Wikipedia article, the knowledge must be written down in a reliable source that can be verified. 331dot (talk) 16:32, 8 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for File:Gavin Rajah Fashion Designer.jpeg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Gavin Rajah Fashion Designer.jpeg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 18:30, 1 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The photographer wrote to Wikipedia giving his permission and Wikipedia responded. This was about a week ago. CS37MV (talk) 15:29, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Permission has been confirmed. Whpq (talk) 15:50, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm Sumanuil. I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions to Gavin Rajah have been undone because they appeared to be promotional. Advertising and using Wikipedia as a "soapbox" are against Wikipedia policy and not permitted; Wikipedia articles should be written objectively, using independent sources, and from a neutral perspective. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about Wikipedia. Thank you. Sumanuil. 04:45, 2 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Listing heavily citated material from a wide variety of sites - I think there must have been around 30 is promotional? Please reinstate as I continue to populate and you will see once I have completed that it is not promotional at all, but factual. Look up my name and you will see I have a long, proud history in journalism. CS37MV (talk) 13:50, 2 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Actually journalism skills mean you get a better standard of writing. I am very sorry that you are hostile to attempts to improve and add to those from underserved communities, ie Africa. I do not understand this hostility because in my semi-retirement I hope to continue a process of adding to Wikipedia’s file of notable Africans. CS37MV (talk) 13:08, 3 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This is an encyclopedia, not a newspaper or magazine. Journalism skills are irrelevant.23:21, 2 September 2022 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:Gavin Rajah.jpeg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Gavin Rajah.jpeg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{permission pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Whpq (talk) 02:16, 3 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I got permission from the photographer - whose name I noted under the pic - after seeing it elsewhere on the web. How can I provide that permission to you? Would you like me to cut and paste an email from the photographer and what sort of details do you want from him eg. email address, street address, something else? And would I paste that information here? CS37MV (talk) 13:12, 3 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Please reread the note above. The instructions are there. Whpq (talk) 13:21, 3 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Proof was sent from the photographer yesterday, and he received confirmation from Wikipedia - but I see someone has since removed his name under the photograph - why? CS37MV (talk) 23:03, 5 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The photographer is credited in the file description and not in any captions per MOS:CREDITS. Whpq (talk) 00:05, 6 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:Gavin Rajah, South African fashion designer, Cape Town, 2022.jpeg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused duplicate or lower-quality copy of another file on Wikipedia having the same file format, and all inward links have been updated.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Whpq (talk) 02:17, 3 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I cannot see a tag that says “Contest this speedy deletion.” I have responded to the person who mentioned the image - see above - namely that I got permission from the photographer after seeing the image elsewhere on the web. His name is below the image. I can ask him to put his permission in writing but need to know what format you want it in - should I upload it as a file, and if so, where? Or I can cut and paste but then I am sure you want more detail from him to perhaps contact him directly yourself?
I have slowly over the years contributed to Wikipedia (financially and within my humble budget) but more importantly adding to pages of well-known Africans, esp. South Africans (my home country). As Nelson Mandela’s authorized biographer I have a commitment to the people of my birth continent to improve their pages or to create pages for unknown, marginally known, important characters on Wikipedia. I am struggling to understand the hostility I am experiencing. I am a multi-award winning journalist, author and after 40 years of ethical journalism applaud attempts to be ethical - but this is feeling nasty and personal to me. I trust that I am wrong.
This particular individual: Rajah has achieved renown in a field I have little interest in: fashion; what interests me more is his long commitment to human rights, whether in HIV and AIDs activism (I can’t recall if I mentioned that), action against sexual assault and domestic violence, mentoring of young people from disadvantaged communities, work with Unicef, Harvard, etc. In other words, a role model for ethical conduct in a world that is in pain. When I came to his page it was a mess, heaven knows who tried to put it together before, but ... well, it was a mess. I hope I have done a better job of trying to rectify.
I will, as I have time, do more on Wikipedia - I too don’t understand all the technicalities of posting, but I will learn. CS37MV (talk) 13:22, 3 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Why has the name of the photographer been removed from under Gavin Rajah’s photograph? I know that he also wrote to Wikipedia yesterday confirming his agreement to use of the pic - and received confirmation from Wikipedia, but someone has now removed pic attribution - his name from the pic - why?
