My interests

[edit]

Hello and thank you for your message. I am not going to add new stuff to Amilcar Cabral article. I've just added another category to his article. No, I'm not a folklorist, but generally I am interested in American history and African-Americans too. I have still a lot to do. Thank you for joining Wikipedia. I hope you will enjoy it. - Darwinek 09:28, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Botkin

[edit]

Done, Botkin moved. All you need to do is to click on the "move" button which is on top and follow the instructions. And please, next time when you will be adding categories to some people, make it in this style [[Category:Folklorists|Lomax, John]]. People are sorted by surname in categories. I am from the Czech Republic, but I am a Pole. Where are you from? - Darwinek 19:27, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[Posted to User:Brookie] I'm just curious why you deleted the paragraph on Botkin's values and beliefs about multiculturalism, as well as calling him the "Father of Public Folklore." I will write a longer Botkin entry at some point, but was wondering what about that merited striking from the discussion? Bruxism 23:22, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The edits were an attempt to bring the article into some sort of tidy order and NPOV; as a phrase "Father of Public Folklore" strikes me as quite meaningless - I have no idea what it is meant to mean! If you are happy then please rv my changes! :) A curate's egg 08:34, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the note -just hang on in there and do your best and be bold! NPOV means Neutralpoint of view. You'redoing well - keep at it! A curate's egg 17:23, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Botkin

[edit]

I made Botkin a disambiguation page. You can add another Botkins to that page. Now you can change links in that articles, that should link to Sergei Botkin and now links to Botkin disambig. page. Was Ben Botkin an African American? - Darwinek 17:53, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Yes, I am a student. This year I've finished high school and I've passed the exams to 2 universities. I can study law at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and political sciences at the University of Olomouc. I think I will choose the political sciences. How about you? Are you student too? - Darwinek 18:09, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

You're welcome

Thanks for taking the tip well! After I submitted it I worried it would seem like I was following you around and criticizing things. :-) I see I'm a month late to say this, but welcome to Wikipedia anyhow, and if I can ever be helpful again, please drop me a note on my talk page. Thanks for your hard work -- it's always energizing to see other people contributing. :-) Jwrosenzweig 23:25, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, that one took me a few months to realize--redirs are marked N on Recent changes, but Special:Newpages is smart enough not to see them. They're in your contribution history, though, and of course they show up via whatlinkshere. Jwrosenzweig 23:35, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

"technical term"

[edit]

In "Mythology", you referred to the word "narrative" as technical. Not that I disagree with you (the change makes little difference), but what exactly did you mean by that?elvenscout742 22:22, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted info

[edit]

I deleted the info because MediaWiki conveniently makes it available via the history. It was certainly useful information, as you said, that needed rewriting, but the article could be without it for a while until someone edited it. I assumed-and of course there will be those who disagree-that leaving it out until it could be properly melded into the rest of the article is better than having a messy article. If it's important, it will be edited and restored.

Thanks and I always love feedback on my edits. Paul 03:04, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Dell Hymes

[edit]

A) I didn't say it was "absurd," I said it needed editing to fit in with the rest of the article. B) The watchlist (mostly) solves the problem of people looking at the history - you noticed that I removed the information, so you are then able to edit it so that it can be put back into the article. I assume you know more about the topic than I do, since you noticed the edit. Therefore, you noticed it was removed, and thus you are able to solve the problem. Best, Paul 17:15, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, if you rewrote the info and put it back in the article, then the problem was solved--the beauty of WP, eh? Paul 17:16, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ellacuría and Martín-Baró

[edit]

Hi. Thanks for your help with Ellacuria's and Martín-Baró's bio's. I plan to work with Segundo Montes' soon. He was a sociologist and did very important work too. I'm currently living in Norway, but I come originally from El Salvador. I studied in the Jesuit high school in San Salvador and went to college in UCA. That's why I'm so interested in writing the biographies of these priests that were murdered in San Salvador. I have many Jesuit friends and know very well people that worked with them. How about you? How did you first learn about them? albtho, 10 December, 2005.

I'm a RC patroller, so it's natural I have edits on articles I don't know about. There's no way I can tell if everybit of information is vandalism, so I rather not revert something that I wasn't sure of (like the last edit that ip made). Actually, it does fit. :) I'm part of the WP:1.0 project (well, kinda) which one of its subprojects are to improve Core topics. I wanted to expand museum greatly but I quickly lost interest. lol. I did like expanding Antarctica from its abysmal state. Well, thanks for comment, I like hearing feedback (positive and negative) about my contributions. Those secondary lists are more of a preliminary list (which have been forgotten long ago), but yes, I completely agree, folklore should be listed in one of the top lists. You can leave a comment here and it'll be noted. I don't think it'll be part of the 100 or so core topics since culture and other similar topics are there, but you never know. I've never heard of Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, but I'll be sure to check it out. Thanks! Gflores Talk 04:29, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I listened to them earlier today and I am really liking their music. They have a rather eclectic sound. They're great! After listening to a few songs from Café Tacuba, I can't say the same. Jewish Americans...

[edit]

Thanks for your reply. I understand what you are saying. Although I dont think that you grasp what I mean. Many peoples articles immediately state that Cathy is a Irish American politician, or Susan is a French American actress. It is quite common on wikipedia; I am not strategically targeting a certain group. What you said about refering to someone as a "white American President" and a "Protestant American President" is entirely different. Refering to someones skin color is not refering to really a specific race. For instance the white race is divided into many different ethnic groups such as the Slavs, Tuetoens, Mediteranean, baltics, and Jews. It goes for the same for Asians, they may look alike and saying that a Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, are all Asian it is correct in a sense but they are all different ethnic groups. When you say that PHDs are thinking that there is no ethinc group that is nonsense. A black person does not belong to the same race/ethnic group as a Chinese. This is known.

Although refering to someone by their religion is actually common on wikipedia. I see it quite often in opening lines to see John Balt is a Roman Catholic American actor. That is just referring to someones religion which is informative and gives insight to someones personality. Its pleasant to say this is a Italian American actor because each ethnic group has a rich heritage of history and a culture they can be proud of. Henry Kissinger is not really German but ethinically Jewish. He was born in Germany and maintains a German citizenship and could identify as German but he didnt originate from the same ethinic german tribe; he is a semite. That is why he is called a German-Jew. That is like a black man being born in Japan and being considered an ethinc Japanese. He would be identified as a black-Japanese or something along those lines. I hope I cleared this up. Also ones ethnic backround is something to be proud of. If someone said that this person is a French American actress it is done in a positive way, not a negative.

JJstroker 04:08, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

With regard to Henry Kissinger its true and it not only applies to him but others. If I were to move to France, I wouldnt be an ethnic french and I dont belong there. I actually have a French citizenship but I am not ethnically French in any way. I know that I am not really French no matter what political correctness says. No hard feelings I dont belong in Japan, I dont belong in France, and I dont belong in Africa I belong in the sudentenland with my original ethnic people and I am acceptable in Canada, Australia, US, etc but I dont belong in any other country. Also many Jews identify themselves as "German Jews" because it would be incorrect to strictly identify themselves as ethnic Germans. America is a melting pot of a million different cultures so its beneficial and informative for people to state their ethnic backrounds considering there is not one race which originated from this land except for native Americans which are also identified by their ethnic backround.

Now you are starting to see my viewpoint. Mexican-Americans, African-Americans, German Americans, Irish-Americans, are all Americans who just belong to different ethnic backrounds. To identify them as such is something that is informative and pleasant to see on wikipedia. Most people are proud of their heritage and freely state it, I dont see the controversy with identifying someone as a German American, Jewish American, Mexican American etc.

I didnt say all asians look alike but similar just like whites look similar. A Polish American could look just like an English American even if they belong to different ethnic groups; its not a big deal. I didnt mean it in any deragatory way. There are minor distinctions between whites and asians but overall all ethnic groups look the same.

    • If you think that Wikipedia would be better with articles on those Canadians, or the nonprofits that they are associated with, then please consider starting their articles.
  • Also, I see that you live in Bound Brook, New Jersey. The first thing that came to mind when I saw that was that (I think) Voice of America or some other broadcaster has a shortwave broadcasting facility there. If such a facility is still there, could you add it to the Bound Brook, New Jersey article? Bound Brook flooding

Great edits on Bound Brook (as elswhere... your project NJ is great). But don't you think the new flooding section which you created should follow the history section, rather than precede it? Out of respect I'm not changing it without your ok. What do you think? Bruxism 04:15, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I was torn as to where to put it, but probably because it's a current event I leaned towards highlighting the flooding problems, which have been a chronic and defining issue for Bound Brook. Lib. Theology

[edit]

Thanks for your comments.

I feel the discussion in the paragraph you deleted has been somewhat hijacked, yes, to reflect some theologically conservative bias. I would repair it, but recently I've been very busy and without the time to devote to this particular article. I think it is important, though, to recognize that the Puebla conference depends on how you frame it. I, personally, think liberation theology hits the nail on the head nine times out of ten, and I think it's incredible that despite conservative control of the Puebla conference and the complete disinvitation of basically the entire theological community of Latin America, the movement had enough strength and enough power to manage to affect the conference and insure that the Puebla documents did reflect their thinking.

I think the movement in Puebla was powerful enough and noteworthy enough to warrant mention. They were a scrappy bunch facing off against some severe repressive powers, and they still achieved their goals and objectives. I don't think that speaks to their oppression; I think it speaks to the power and persuasiveness of their message and the basic power of liberation theology as an intellectual, moral, and theological enterprise. Sighter Goliant 05:45, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Before I forget, I can easily see the discussion being moved to articles on different subjects, honestly. You are right in the sense that it does not necessarily broaden our definition of what lib. theology is. However, if we could couch it in terms of liberation theology being a broad movement within the church -- and therefore capable of doing what happened at Puebla -- it might actually be helpful to understanding.

As for my philosophy, I know Wikipedia's standards don't ban or prohibit textual deletion without discussion. I just think it's in good form to do so. But being a full-time student, it can be hard sometimes to get enmeshed in the deeper meta-debates over Wikipedia policies and procedures, so for now I just try to get people to discuss before deleting as a matter of politeness to interested parties.

No objections to a name change. The obit cited in the article said he was self-taught, though it sounds as if he knew several other musicians. Thanks for checking in! Jokestress 03:18, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, Middle Eastern Studies. But I'm also interested in longevity, hence the possibility of someone such as himself being alive interests me. I'm sure some Wikipedians have accounts to sites like ancestry.com, which is probably where they get their information, but my interest tends to stop when I have to pay to find something out. Haha. Anyhow, thanks for the reply! Cheers, CP 02:23, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Copyvio discussion

[edit]

Hi Jay, We're writing at the same time here. I have no objection to a list of historical winners being copied, but it's the citation that has been copied here, without quotation marks, e.g. "For her compelling portrait of a baseball umpire who endured the death of a son while knowing that another son suffers from the same deadly genetic disease." That's wherein the plagiarism lies. Bruxism (talk) 07:26, 19 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Where in Romania did you live? Bruxism (talk) 07:28, 19 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oops! Sorry about the edit conflict there. I'd like to wait to hear from User:Rebecca on the topic before deleting because she's a very experienced Wikipedian and might be able to explain more clearly. I almost never revert other editors, but I thought this probably merited some discussion (if it is a copyvio, it applies to most of the Pulitzer and Nobel pages, not just this one). I think mistakes like that can happen, but with CSD you never know if you're going to get an admin who knows what they are doing or not. Since Rebecca is an admin she can help sort it out next time she's online. Hope that makes sense, and I sincerely apologize if I seemed rude or hasty. Re. Jean Mohr

[edit]

Hi. The entire content of the article was

"Jean Mohr (1925, September 13 -) Swiss photographer.

External Links: http://jeanmohr.com"

This doesn't contain an assertion of notability. Even if a person is notable, it doesn't mean we're supposed to have placeholder articles for them with no content, nor does it mean an admin is obliged to write the content of every article by him/herself instead of deleting stuff when an article is useless (even though it's obviously preferable). This doesn't prevent you from writing a real article about the person. - Bobet 22:10, 25 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Message at the IP address

[edit]

Hi! The message was for the person who posted the edit at that time. You shouldn't get into trouble at work; your IP address is used by multiple people and the edit is timestamped. If anyone questions you about the edit, just say that it was made at X time and you didn't make it at that time. WhisperToMe (talk) 04:42, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

BTW I'm not sure which IP you are referring to, but for the only non-university I am thinking of, I merely posted the notice that the IP is assigned to a particular company. [1] WhisperToMe (talk) 04:44, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • I marked the IP because all IP addresses that may be used by multiple people should be marked as belonging to a particular organization. This includes school district IPs, IPs of certain companies, government agencies, and more. WhisperToMe (talk) 02:48, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • 1. You said: "and no one has ever warned me like this before" - this isn't targeting you. I wasn't warning you in particular. This is related to the IP address. It is shared by multiple users; the notice lets Wikipedians know that. I marked the IP address because it is shared.
    • 2. I believe Northrop Grumman would be a corporate address. Also, even if an IP is blocked you can sign on to your account and you may continue to edit. WhisperToMe (talk) 02:47, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I must have thought of the wrong one. Anyway, yeah, university addresses are also marked as they too are shared by multiple users. It matters whether it is a group IP because multiple people can use the same address at once; therefore a warning to a user who makes edit A may be read by another person. Entire populations may be affected by a block on a particular address. Therefore administrators need to know whether an IP is shared. As Template:SharedIPEDU/doc explains adding the school IP also categorizes it as one of several IP addresses shared by multiple people. WhisperToMe (talk) 02:57, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion at WikiProject New Jersey

[edit]

Hi, Bruxism, User:Nightscream and I had a disagreement over certain parts of NJ municipality articles; because the discussion could potentially affect hundreds of articles, we decided to bring the discussion to WikiProject New Jersey. I would value your input in the discussion, which you can find at here. Thanks, A Stop at Willoughby (talk) 14:47, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Folk etymology: Your input requested

[edit]

I am looking for people with interests in folklore (editors I’ve encountered on folklore/mythology articles as well as elsewhere) to visit talk:Folk etymology, where there is an ongoing edit dispute. One view (three people) holds that the term is exclusive to linguistics, and another (just me) finds that the term has been formally defined within folklore, and used in academic journals in that sense for more than a century. The page is currently locked. I ask your input ‘’’not in support of either view,’’’ but because discussion seems to have come to a standstill, it seems to be a page few stumble across, and needs fresh viewpoints to get unstuck. Thanks! DavidOaks (talk) 17:53, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The canvassing complaint is part of a long list of inappropriate actions by the user and has nothing to do with you per se. It has nothing to do with the content of the article. But given the complaint it is highly inappropriate for you to further recruit recruit specific individual editors, if I understand the meaning of your comment on my talk page.μηδείς (talk) 05:04, 17 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't even know what the point of your original comment was on my talk page, but yes, it would be highly inappropriate in this context to recruit more editors from just one selected field when there is a complaint about another editor for doing exactly that - privately asking editors from just a selected field perceived by that editor to be on one side of a debate to comment rather than placing a public request for comment on all fields. Maybe I have misunderstood you, but I take your repeated posts to my talk page as hostile. Please do not comment there further unless you are notifying me of a formal complaint, and I will likewise refrain from further comment here.μηδείς (talk) 05:43, 17 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Would you mind searching for the logo of Hislop College, Nagpur and adding it on Wikimedia Commons? Uploading it in the US qualifies it as non-free use under the US Copyright Law. While in India, it might amount to Copyright Infringement. Ashish1401 (talk) 14:32, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
