History of the Punjab, many reference errors

[edit]

To check as many errors as possible in the references and/or notes, I recommend using User:Lingzhi/reviewsourcecheck in conjunction with two other scripts. You can install them as follows:

  • First, copy/paste importScript('User:Ucucha/HarvErrors.js'); to Special:MyPage/common.js .
  • On the same page and below that script add importScript('User:Lingzhi/reviewsourcecheck.js');. Save that page.
  • Finally go to to Special:MyPage/common.css and add .citation-comment {display: inline !important;} /* show all Citation Style 1 error messages */.

When you've added all those, go to an article to check for various messages in its notes and references. (You may need to clear your browser's cache first). The output of User:Lingzhi/reviewsourcecheck is not foolproof and can be verbose. Use common sense when interpreting output (especially with respect to sorting errors). Reading the explanatory page will help more than a little. The least urgent message of all is probably Missing archive link; archiving weblinks is good practice but lack of archiving will probably not be mentioned in any content review. Lingzhi ♦ (talk) 16:20, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for this tool! I appreciate this, and will likely install it soon, but first I will get more familiar with checking manually.BreadBuddy (talk) 16:50, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Caste articles

[edit]

Please note the following.

The Wikipedia community has permitted administrators to impose discretionary sanctions on any editor who is active on any page about social groups, explicitly including caste associations and political parties, related to India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal. Discretionary sanctions can be used against an editor who repeatedly or seriously fails to adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, any expected standards of behavior, or any normal editorial process. If you engage in inappropriate behavior in this area, you may be placed under sanctions, which can include blocks, a revert limitation, or a topic ban. The discussion leading to the imposition of these sanctions can be read here.

Please familiarise yourself with the information page at Wikipedia:General sanctions/South Asian social groups.

That is an advisory, not an accusation. However, while I cannot tell you what to do, I do also think you should perhaps concentrate on shorter, less high profile articles while learning about referencing etc and that you should make use of both your sandbox and the advice offered by people with vastly more experience than yourself. Your enthusiasm is welcome but enthusiasm alone is not going to cut the mustard, I'm afraid. The potential to do harm, even unwittingly, in the caste topic area is pretty high and it does tend to have a lot of fireworks at the best of times. - Sitush (talk) 18:26, 17 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough. I'll return to GA that article once I have more experience. BreadBuddy (talk) 18:45, 17 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nair

[edit]

Hi, I have left you to it at Nair and haven't even bothered looking at what you are doing. I've just now looked at the latest diff and I can see a big problem, explained at WP:CITEVAR. Whether the material is ok or not, the cite format will have to be changed. - Sitush (talk) 20:29, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Sitush: In the talkpage around 2015, you had suggested that we move the cite style over to shortened footnotes, and the article when I began editing was a mixture of both styles (i.e the material for Gough used shortened footnotes while I believe the named references were used for Fuller). For the sake of consistency I stuck with shortened footnotes for what I had added with the thought in mind that I would have to standardize the other citations to sfn in the near future. BBuddy (talk) 20:45, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, thanks for reminding me. I didn't get any takers, so no consensus. Perhaps I went ahead anyway after leaving for a suitable time. I'm not mithered about using {{sfnp}} but I have kept saying to myself that I need to tidy the thing up. I don't understand why you are using the |harv parameter - it shouldn't be necessary. But, like I said, I haven't really looked at your recent edits other than that last diff. - Sitush (talk) 21:05, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The harv parameter makes sure that the links between the footnote and the cited ref work. It's similar to what the author link parameter does. Without it, I get a reference error message saying that the ref doesn't point to a citation.BBuddy (talk) 21:30, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

toggle ref check

[edit]

Hello, just a note to say that User:Lingzhi2/reviewsourcecheck has been update to add the option to toggle it on or off.

The installed script will add a tab to the drop-down tab at the top, located between the 'watchlist star' and the search box (using the vector.js skin). The tab toggles between "Hide ref check" and "Show ref check" with displaying the errors as the default option. You may need to edit Special:MyPage/common.js and change User:Lingzhi/reviewsourcecheck to User:Lingzhi2/reviewsourcecheck (add the "2" after User:Lingzhi). Please do drop me a line if you have any problems or suggestions. Tks. ♦ Lingzhi2 (talk) 16:01, 2 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Sorry to bother you again. After the addition of a toggle option in the tab atop the page, one editor requested a revised version in which the toggle link appears in the "Tools" section of the page's left sidebar. So now there are two versions of this tool. If you prefer the links in the Toolbar section on the side, the slightly altered script is named User:Lingzhi2/reviewsourcecheck-sb.js (just add "-sb" before the ".js"). Finally, both versions should now also store the page state (whether reference errors/warnings are "hidden" or "shown"). The state persists between page loads and between the browser closing and reopening (unless cleared by the user, for example by deleting data in your browser's cache etc.). Huge thanks to User:Evad37 for much coding help. If you have any questions or problems, please drop me a line. Thanks again. ♦ Lingzhi2 (talk) 08:08, 5 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nair image

[edit]

Hello, I know that you were responsible for leading a conversation about the lead image in the Nair article a year ago.

Based on MOS:SHOCKVALUE, I decided to change the Master/slave lead image for another lead image that has the exact same message: a person on a leash during some BDSM event. The only difference is that the old image has nudity, the new image has no nudity.

But a person told me that I have no right to follow MOS:SHOCKVALUE guidelines if there is another user who doesn't wanna follow the guidelines (?).

So I wanna know if you would like to give your opinion in Master/slave talk page, I just created a new topic there. Your opinion will be highly appreciated. Thank you very much for your attention. gabibb2 18:51, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Real hero

[edit]
True legend
You have managed and reverted a biased admin in the Nair article I was the one who got consensus on changing the lead image via my old ID But after a few days it would again be reverted back to a non specific vulgar image from an unreliable source. There is no doubt the admin was heavily biased. The implication was so bad that you google nair and the image would come up. This lead to many people identifying Nairs based on some image of a naked girl which neither reflected the traditional dressing nor was it certain or specifically mentioned whether the girl was a Nair or not. You have corrected the article now and I only wish you the article had your attention sooner. Thank you once again. Mumblejumbleagain (talk) 13:25, 21 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
