Some stroopwafels for you!

Congratulations on becoming Wikipedia's newest administrator! Rubbish computer (HALP!: I dropped the bass?) 20:41, 23 December 2016 (UTC)

Congratulations on your successful RFA!
My Christmas gifts to you are the words of wisdom I received from the puppy after my RFA passed –
almost ten long, sordid, I-really-really-should-have-found-a-better-hobby years ago:
  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version. (I got nothing here. It's inevitable.)
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. Without exception, you will pick the wrong one to do. (See #5.)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll. (You'll attract many more of those now, because mop. They must like to drink the dirty water in the bucket.)
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block, because really, what else is there to live for?
  5. Remember that when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology. It will not be a personal attack because we are admins and, therefore, we are all rouge anyway.
  6. Finally, remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

Getting the mop

Last year, both User:Nakon and User:SilkTork suggested nominating you as an admin (User talk:Boson/Archive 4#RFA Nomination and User talk:Boson/Archive 4#Potential admin). You've edited with no breaks in activity since 2006, with 100% edit summaries, no blocks, 15,000 edits, and just over 1/2 your edits to article space. Your edits in the area of the European Union are extensive. You make detailed and reasoned contributions to AfD and to featured article reviews. User:EEng called you a "miracle of diplomacy". We need more admins and your mix of experience, content development and diplomacy is the right skill set. Let's turn Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Boson blue. Fences&Windows 13:14, 10 December 2016 (UTC)

The point being, I gather, that if grumpy old EEng gives his approval, he (or she) must be good? EEng 22:31, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
Thank you, Fences and windows, for your confidence. Please feel free to nominate me. --Boson (talk) 17:15, 11 December 2016 (UTC)
Don't fall for it, Boson! It's a trap! EEng 17:25, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

Fences&Windows 21:15, 14 December 2016 (UTC)

It's live. Good luck! Fences&Windows 20:11, 16 December 2016 (UTC)
That went pretty well! Congratulations. Let me know if you ever want to duscuss adminning. Fences&Windows 21:46, 23 December 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, I will! --Boson (talk) 21:56, 23 December 2016 (UTC)
And thanks, again, for the nomination!--Boson (talk) 21:59, 23 December 2016 (UTC)

FYI

I'm not voting in your RfA because (a) I never do, and if I start now everyone will be clamoring for my endorsement – you know how it is when you're a celebrity; (b) you don't need my vote anyway. EEng 09:56, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

It's the thought that counts! (1, 2, 3, ...) --Boson (talk) 01:38, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
[FBDB]Honestly, you should take all the money you're obviously wasting on bribing people to Support you, and spend it on ending cancer or world hunger. Clearly with your budget you could put Bill & Melinda Gates to shame. EEng 04:30, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

Thanks

I would like to thank all those who participated in my RfA. Thanks to the supporters for your trust and encouragement, and thanks to all for your time and effort. Thanks to all who offered advice. Thanks for not deleting me. Thanks, too, for the humorous accompaniment from visiting celebrities! And thanks for the T-shirt! In the words of Henry Crun: Thank you for your support! I will always wear it.

I would also like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas (and/or whatever else you may celebrate) and a Happy New Year. --Boson (talk) 21:06, 23 December 2016 (UTC)

I will always wear it -- Always? Yecch! EEng 22:08, 23 December 2016 (UTC)
By "humorous accompaniment from visiting celebrities", do you mean this celebrity? - Anyway, congratulations! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:21, 23 December 2016 (UTC)
Ahem. He said humorous. EEng 22:49, 23 December 2016 (UTC)

A cheeseburger for you!

Congrats on your successful admin request. May god be with you on Christmas EurovisionNim (talk to me)(see my edits) 05:31, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

Judgment (law)

  • Thanks, Boson, for maintaining the integrity of Judgment (law), most of which was improved on by a former student. In your edit summary, you said "Undid revision 761771980," which seems like good practice. I was wondering where one sees this unique ID. LexLife (talk) 22:44, 24 January 2017 (UTC)
(moved this here for clarity) --Boson (talk) 12:00, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
If you click on "View history", you get a list of recent edits; if you then click on "prev" before the edit in question, you are shown a "diff" for the edit, with a URL like this:
Here the "diff" parameter in the URL indicates the revision ID. Clicking on "undo" above the right column of the diff display generates an edit summary with the ID. Similarly, if you click on the timestamp (for instance in the column heading of the diff display or in the history list), the revision ID is shown as "oldid" in the URL, as here
Boson (talk) 12:00, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
Thank you; I see that now! LexLife (talk) 15:30, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
You are very welcome. Feel free to ask if you have any other questions. --Boson (talk) 15:38, 25 January 2017 (UTC)

Technical news

  • When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (T34950)
  • Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (T156448)
  • The Foundation has announced a new community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.

Obituaries

  • JohnCD (John Cameron Deas) passed away on 30 December 2016. John began editing Wikipedia seriously during 2007 and became an administrator in November 2009.

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • A recent query shows that only 16% of administrators on the English Wikipedia have enabled two-factor authentication. If you haven't already enabled it please consider doing so.
  • Cookie blocks should be deployed to the English Wikipedia soon. This will extend the current autoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user after they switch accounts under a new IP.
  • A bot will now automatically place a protection template on protected pages when admins forget to do so.

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a discussion on the backlog of unpatrolled files, consensus was found to create a new user right for autopatrolling file uploads. Implementation progress can be tracked on Phabricator.
  • The BLPPROD grandfather clause, which stated that unreferenced biographies of living persons were only eligible for proposed deletion if they were created after March 18, 2010, has been removed following an RfC.
  • An RfC has closed with consensus to allow proposed deletion of files. The implementation process is ongoing.
  • After an unsuccessful proposal to automatically grant IP block exemption, consensus was found to relax the criteria for granting the user right from needing it to wanting it.

Technical news

  • After a recent RfC, moved pages will soon be featured in a queue similar to Special:NewPagesFeed and require patrolling. Moves by administrators, page movers, and autopatrolled editors will be automatically marked as patrolled.
  • Cookie blocks have been deployed. This extends the current autoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user if they switch accounts, even under a new IP.

  • Following an RfC, the editing restrictions page is now split into a list of active restrictions and an archive of those that are old or on inactive accounts. Make sure to check both pages if searching for a restriction.

Brixit listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Brixit. Since you had some involvement with the Brixit redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion if you have not already done so. --Nevéselbert 20:54, 12 May 2017 (UTC)
