Rationale for Image usage on National Film Award for Best Actor

I noticed your edits on National Film Award for Best Actor about including images of the winners. Do they have rationale for their respective usage? Earlier there was an attempt to use film posters on 57th National Film Awards which were reverted due to lack of rationale. Thanks. Vivvt (talk) 03:51, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Do you know about Wikimedia Commons, do you? because all the images are from there, which is a free media repository, in simple meaning doesn't host "copyrighted material". I got that now. Aim was not to question your edits but to get the clarity on rationale issue. I, myself had done the mistake of using images on 56th and 57th National Film Awards which were reverted for not complying with the rationale usage. Your efforts on the article is commendable though. WikiCup 2011 July newsletter

We are half way through the penultimate round of this year's WikiCup; there is less than a month to go before we have our final 8. Our pool leaders are Adabow (submissions) (Pool A, 189 points) and PresN (submissions) (Pool B, 165 points). The number of points required to reach the next round is not clear at this time; there are some users who still do not have any recorded points. Please remember to update your submissions' pages promptly. In addition, congratulations to PresN, who scored the first featured topic points in the competition for his work on Thatgamecompany related articles. Most points this round generally have, so far, come from good articles, with only one featured article (White-bellied Sea Eagle, from Casliber (submissions)) and two featured lists (Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story, from PresN and Grammy Award for Best Native American Music Album, from Another Believer (submissions)). Points for Did You Know and good article reviews round out the scoring. Before joining the drive you should have paid more attention to the guidelines of WP:WIKIFY, in spite of wikifying articles you're making things worse. You create so many disambiguations, link irrelevant terms, never format lead properly, never add infobox, make unnecessary sections with poor headings, etc. So, someone has to clean your mess, and I'm just doing that. Israel at the Asian Games

Hi Bill

Some time ago you asked about information on Israeli sportspeople in the Asian Games. As I told you, I have details of all the Israeli results which are based on a series of books published in Israel (in Hebrew off course) that I have in my library. You can see an example of that info in Israel at the 1954 Asian Games. In later Games the number of Israeli athletes increased considerably and it will be a time consuming task for me. The info is translated to English by me, and in most cases I can't take responsibility for the accuracy of names as well as other information and have no other source to verify it (unless you know of one). For the translation we can take some help of WP:Israel, I may suggest you to drop a message there. You just add names and results, don't worry about the format, I'll make necessary amendments, the work you are doing is itself time-consuming. As I originally asked you for the assistance with Israel at the 1974 Asian Games, can you add information there; this article is crucial in the sense that it was Israel's last participation in the Asian Games and I want people to know how and why Israel was expelled from the Games. If you're interested in the political troubles that Israel has encountered in Asia, you should start with 1962 when the Indonesian government denied Israeli athletes visas so they could not participate. BTW, they did the same to the Republic of China (aka Chinese Taipe or Taiwan) and South Korea, while inviting the PR of China and North Korea which were not members of Asia Olympic Council at that time. This was followed 2 years later by a boycott of 1964 Olympics by Indonesia and PRK in order to organize the so-called "Games of the emerging nations". It should be noted that in the 50s and 60s, the dominating sport powers of Asia were Japan, South Korea, Iran, Thailand, as well as Israel, all pro-western countries, the socialist countries were a small minority, and Arab countries were either weak or poor or even non-existant. It changed dramatically in the 70s following the oil crisis of 73-74 and the increasing financial and political power of the Arab Gulf countries. The process of Israel's expulsion started with the awarding of the 1978 Asian Games to Pakistan, but later the Pakistanis withdrew and the Games were re-allocated to Bangkok, in a secret deal that the Arab countries will finance the Games on condition that Israel will not be invited. After that, in order to expell Israel from the Asian Games permanently, the Asian Council has officially disbanded(?) and a new governing body with a different name was formed without Israel (in order to make sure of that, the founding convention was held in an Arab country so Israel delegates could not be present, and Israel's subsequent request to be re-admitted was denied. That's the short story, and the long story is detailed in one of my books... which version do you want, the short or the long? In any case, it doesn't belong IMO to the article on the 1974 Games, but to the general article on Israel in the Asian Games.--Nitsansh (talk) 04:57, 7 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi Nitsansh, I know half of this story, and it would be great if we include these crucial facts in respective articles, majority of which will go for Israel at the Asian Games. If anyhow you provide me whole story then I can do most of the work in a day or two, I've got three days spare time, after that I won't be much active. As you said, your all sources are in Hebrew, and I can understand how difficult it could be to translate a Semitic language. The difficulty is not only the translation from Hebrew to English, but also the neutrality, or lack of it rather, of writing an article based solely on the version of one side... the sources for the part of the book in question are mainly the Israeli Olympic Committee top officials at the time, who are by no means a neutral source. Though I believe the technical facts like dates of events and communications are occurate, the presentation of them may not... how do you think we can overcome this obstacle?--Nitsansh (talk) 11:14, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

The issue of neutrality can be overcome by using multiple sources, the best I can find are archives of different newspapers, which I usually refer, like one I've used in Israel at the 1974 Asian Games. I've seen that source... if I recall correctly, it also presents the Israeli side of the story... perhaps a good place to look for different opinions are papers in India... actually, I checked and found that the crucial meeting where the Asian Federation was re-organized as a new legal entity in order to get rid of Israel for good was held in India and not an Arab country as I previousely thought, but still the Israeli delegates were denied visas to get there... anyway, it makes sense that Indian papers reported on this meeting... if you can check with Indian wikipeds that could help...--Nitsansh (talk) 13:35, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

Initially I was under that impression too, but then I thought how can we decide whether it's a minor or major. The event is just few years old, and nobody can predict how it will go in future. We've similar range of articles (China at the 2009 Asian Youth Games) for Asian Youth Games. So, like I always say Wikipedia is not paper, if there're editors who are willing to create/expand/maintain those articles then I don't see any problem in it. I'm thinking to create articles for all possible medal winning nations, then after the event those can be expanded up to c- or b-class. I know regarding this you may have different opinion, but as a fellow coordinator of the event I hope you would help me, and I'm just expecting updating the results during the event. — Bill william compton^Talk 02:32, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

I was originally going to create it, but after all the European Youth Festival articles were deleted after being created I thought just leave as is. Rating pages

Article is clearly a start-class because it is introducing reader with the dates/timing, major athletes, venue, participating nations, etc. Hmm, for now assess with low-importance as page contain not so much information and as there is time for event to be start, nothing is likely to be added for few weeks. Before the Games, maybe at the starting of October assess it with mid-importance and if event becomes crucial in the manner of level of competition, viewership and other gaming factors, then you may give it high.

Intoronto, I've few comments on article:

• There is no wikilink for rhythmic gymnastics on the page dedicated to rhythmic gymnastics.
• Why on earth Multipurpose Gymnasium has redirect over Badminton at the 2011 Pan American Games?

You're wrong, sorry

"National Film Awards" - that's the official name used to present the award each year. The awards are presented only in English and not Hindi, and that has been their name since their inception. You can see the latest publications of the NFA catalogue, which is published in English only. The reulations and the rules are also presented in English. What you said now is completely wrong. "Rajat Kamal" is actually the title given to a certain section of awards presented at the National Film Awards, along with "Swarna Kamal" (and even when they write it in their catalogues, they write it in English). Irrelevancy! My point was that Hindi is jointly used [with English] in the award ceremony, and all award categories have Hindi names also. I was taking about "National Film Award for Best Actor" not an award itself.

No, sorry, but you are the one who has to give sources to prove that the award is as much in Hindi as it is in English (WP:BURDEN). You are citing only one link, but I'm sure you know that the award publications of each year are presented in English. Whether you attended the ceremony or not is less relevant, and so is the state of the awards in the past. The official name is in English, and that's why the Wikipedia article is called National Award and not something else. The isn't even an interwiki link to a parallel article on the Hindi Wikipedia. Mind you, you are adding something that did not use to exist here before. I'm giving you time to find a proper source. Dear Bill william compton, I appreciate your work on the article. But I totally disagree with the addition of this script. I believe generally scripts should be added only for foreign language (non-Enlgish) words which are written in English letters. Otherwise it just doesn't contribute anything. I think it's better to take it to the talk page and reach consensus on either way. So far I'm happy that an editor like Dr. Blofeld has stepped in (regardless of what his opinion was). He is one of the most prolific editors on the Indian cinema WProject, having created and contributed to many articles, despite not having any Indian roots. Goswami

Hey there, I appreciate the concern about Goswami but the page was a muddled mess that combined the Brahmin caste with the general term for a specific kind of renunciate. Since the Goswamis were listed as Assamese, I used the Assamese form. No problem, but use common term which is "Goswami", "Gosbami" is conflicting with the title itself. And who says it's a Assamese form, Mamoni Raisom Goswami is an Assamese writer, she also uses "Goswami". I suggest you to modify your changes. — Bill william compton^Talk 12:29, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Wrongly reverted

According to WP:SOCIALMEDIA, "Self-published and questionable sources may be used as sources of information about themselves" as long as "4.there is no reasonable doubt as to its authenticity" "This policy also applies to pages on social networking sites such as Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook." Everything I added to the Adrianne Curry article was sourced directly from Curry, including her verified Twitter account and a video of her speaking to her computer camera. There is clearly no problem with my edits. I am readding them.67.167.133.195 (talk)

Actually BLPs are among the most vandalized pages, and people add controversial information without support of any reliable sources, and IMO sexuality goes top on it. Bigweeboy, as we've discussed before, many scholars characterize the TM movement as a neo-Hindu movement. See Transcendental_Meditation_movement#Connection_to_Hinduism. Wikiprojects cast wide nets, and an added tag on the talk page simply means that the article is being watched by an additional project, which is a good thing.   Will Beback  talk  21:52, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

I'm surprised that you don't see this very axiomatic connection. The philosophy of TM movement is highly inspired by the Vedanta. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi himself was a disciple of Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath and practiced Vedas. TM movement itself is considered as one of the Hindu reform movements; so I see no reason that the TM movement and its related articles shouldn't cover under WP Hinduism, and I'm reverting back your removal of templates from the talk pages. — Bill william compton^Talk 01:13, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

WikiCup 2011 July newsletter

The finals are upon us; we're down to the last few. One of the eight remaining contestants will be this year's WikiCup champion! 150 was the score needed to progress to the final; just under double the 76 required to reach round 4, and more than triple the 41 required to reach round 3. Our eight finalists are:

• Casliber (submissions), Pool A's winner. Casliber has the highest total score in the competition, with 1528, the bulk of which is made up of 8 featured articles. He has the highest number of total featured articles (8, 1 of which was eligible for double points) and total did you knows (72) of any finalist. Casliber writes mostly on biology, including ornithology, botany and mycology.
• PresN (submissions), Pool B's winner and the highest scorer this round. PresN is the only finalist who has scored featured topic points, and he has gathered an impressive 330, but most of his points come from his 4 featured articles, one of which scored double. PresN writes mostly on video games and the Hugo Awards.
• Hurricanehink (submissions), Pool A's runner-up. Hurricanehink's points are mostly from his 30 good articles, more than any other finalist, and he is also the only finalist to score good topic points. Hurricanehink, as his name suggests, writes mostly on meteorology.
• Wizardman (submissions), Pool B's runner-up. Wizardman has completed 86 good article reviews, more than any other finalist, but most of his points come from his 2 featured articles. Wizardman writes mostly on American sport, especially baseball.
• Miyagawa (submissions), the "fastest loser" (Pool A). Miyagawa has written 3 featured lists, one of which was awarded double points, more than any other finalist, but he was awarded points mostly for his 68 did you knows. Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, including dogs, military history and sport.
• Resolute (submissions), the second "fastest loser" (Pool B). Most of Resolute's points come from his 9 good articles. He writes mostly on Canadian topics, including ice hockey.
• Yellow Evan (submissions), who was joint third "fastest loser" (Pool A). Most of Evan's points come from his 10 good articles, and he writes mostly on meteorology.
• Sp33dyphil (submissions), who was joint third "fastest loser" (Pool B). Most of Phil's points come from his 9 good articles, 4 of which (more than any other finalist) were eligible for double points. He writes mostly on aeronautics.

We say goodbye to our seven other semi-finalists, Another Believer (submissions), Piotrus (submissions), Grandiose (submissions), Stone (submissions), Eisfbnore (submissions), Canada Hky (submissions) and MuZemike (submissions). Everyone still in the competition at this stage has done fantastically well, and contributed greatly to Wikipedia. We're on the home straight now, and we will know our winner in two months.

In other news, preparations for next year's competition have begun with a brainstorming thread. Please, feel free to drop by and share any thoughts you have about how the competition should work next year. Sign ups are not yet open, but will be opened in due course. Watch this space. Further, there has been a discussion about the rule whereby those in the WikiCup must delcare their participation when nominating articles at featured article candidates. This has resulted in a bot being created by new featured article delegate Ucucha (talk · contribs). The bot will leave a message on FAC pages if the nominator is a participant in the WikiCup.

A reminder of the rules: any points scored after August 29 may be claimed for the final round, and please remember to update submission pages promptly. If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.
