Wikipedia and copyright
[edit]Hello Benjamin.P.L, and welcome to Wikipedia. All or some of your addition(s) to Draft:George Dury have been removed, as they appear to have added copyrighted material without evidence of permission from the copyright holder. While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues here.
- You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
- Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
- Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
- If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are PD or compatibly licensed) it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions, the help desk or the Teahouse before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
- Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps in Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate. See also Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 14:27, 17 February 2018 (UTC)

Polk family
[edit]Hello. Could you please add a reference to Willis Polk and explain how they were related? I think there may be a historic mansion in Pasadena, California built by the Polk family too, but I may be wrong.Zigzig20s (talk) 18:08, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
@Zigzig20s: I've gone through several references the past week"Polks of North Carolina and Tennessee", "Polk's Folly", several ancestry family tress, etc. I've found very little on him and nothing yet connecting him to the President or even his distant family. (I'm going to be going through a little more till I find something.)
- Thanks. Keep me posted.Zigzig20s (talk) 20:56, 7 April 2018 (UTC)
A barnstar for you!
[edit]The Original Barnstar | |
Hello, I present you with this barnstar to recognise your excellent contribution to wikipedia in your new page Sarah Polk Fall. Polyamorph (talk) 19:59, 8 April 2018 (UTC) |
Do you think Samuel Polk, President Polk's father, is notable? He was a landowner and slaveholder, but was he ever elected to office or did he ever publish anything? As a surveyor, he may have.Zigzig20s (talk) 14:14, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
- I think Samuel is a pretty important figure for Middle Tennessee History, he was in the founding governing-body for Columbia, Tennessee and was one of the first land surveyors to immigrate to that part of TN. (But I don't think he held any specific office or leadership role.) I don't believe he published anything, but his son-inlaw "James Walker" was the founder of the First Newspaper in Columbia and I think he did have a minor role in it's founding. (I mean if Jack Reagan can have an article I see no reason why Samuel can't.) Benjamin.P.L (talk) 15:47, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
- Do you know when he died please? If so, I can probably retrieve obituaries on Newspapers.com.Zigzig20s (talk) 16:02, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
- The Polks of North Carolina and Tennessee says the 5th of November, 1827.(I can look up some other references if that doesn't match.) Benjamin.P.L (talk) 16:23, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
- I can only find this. And then a few matches later.Zigzig20s (talk) 18:39, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
- By the way, could you please work your magic and upload a picture of Elias Polk?Zigzig20s (talk) 21:54, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
- I looked up two other references "Polk's Folly" and "James K. Polk, Jacksonian" both still saying Nov 5th 1827 for Samuel's death... I also can get a direct image of the lithograph of Elias from Mr. Kinslow that'll be a little better quality instead of just copying the image from the WHHS article.(Just give me a bit.)Benjamin.P.L (talk) 18:37, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks. I've nominated Elias for DYK, so it may be on the main page in a week or so.Zigzig20s (talk) 18:39, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
- I've just created Samuel Polk. I will do my best to expand it in the next few days and feel free to help. Thanks!Zigzig20s (talk) 21:03, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi. Would you like to create Saidee Polk Fall Gardner Grant please? I am not entirely sure that she is notable. Here are two obituaries. Your talkpage is on my watchlist--please reply here and ping me when you do. Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 05:47, 7 October 2018 (UTC)
- I think she's notable and probably would fit the criteria guidelines, but I just don't really see a need at this time. I've been holding off a bit because of the efforts to move the president's tomb. I think once the project moves a little closer to it happening there's a bigger need for her own article to explain the site better, but just at this point in time it really wouldn't fit. Her own article doesn't have a big purpose because we could just expand on the Polk Home's article for now. She dose probably need one, but it can hold off and it won't hurt anything. Unblock Request
[edit]Benjamin.P.L (block log • active blocks • global blocks • contribs • deleted contribs • filter log • creation log • change block settings • unblock • checkuser (log))
Request reason:
I consider myself a capable asset for the community and a reliable resource.
I understand my block putting my own judgement over Wiki precedent letting my emotion dictate my action getting into an edit war then sock-putting, which I fully admit was foolish on my part. I would now like to request an unblock waiting the appropriate time(In my opinion.)of five months without editing. I want to prove my professionalism and general enjoyment of being part of Wiki in making productive contributions. That is, I still wish to be a part of Wikipedia through my current account and that it will not happen again. Benjamin.P.L (talk) 18:54, November 16, 2019 2018 (UTC)
Accept reason:
I accept this request on good faith and the conditions below. Good luck with your editing and stay out of trouble.
— Berean Hunter (talk) 23:03, 17 November 2019 (UTC)
- To be clear, you now admit that you were IP socking?
- ...and do you agree to only have this one account and only edit while logged in?
— Berean Hunter (talk) 20:52, 16 November 2019 (UTC)
- It was my own poor judgment for which I admitted...Yes this is the only account I have created, as I genuinely appreciate my barnstars and wouldn't go that far to jeopardize the account being fully deleted.(I'd be willing to prove this if there is any way I'm not aware of.) Yes, I agree. I should only edit while being logged in, as I want to improve my account and make positive contributions for which I can be recognized. [edit]Please address your concerns on Talk pages, either mine or the Starr Talk page. I spent a lot of time. Do not revert that many edits without an explanation. Let's take one thing at a time.
Vmavanti (talk) 15:03, 2 June 2021 (UTC
- @Vmavanti:I apologize if my edits seemed passive aggressive, but there are quite a few problems with the current version. Sentence structure and Prose are/were improved but it cuts a lot of information that is cited within earlier sources. One the companies were consolidated, not just renamed, they're shellac records and not vinyl(vinyl wasn't invited till the 40s.) There's also a lot of unneeded sentence spacing. Your edits have cut too much information, some vital to the article. Such as when Starr cancelled their line of phonographs. I do think it should be reverted back with each one of the original concerns fixed, mainly it cuts too much with several errors that'd take longer to go through and fix un-reverted.Benjamin.P.L (talk) 15:39, June 2, 2021 (UTC)
- You provided a good foundation. I saw room for improvement. You might like a book I have on my shelf. Jelly Roll, Bix, and Hoagie by Rick Kennedy goes into great detail about Starr and Gennett. As far as I know, it's the most complete book about Gennett. I plan to do an overhaul using Kennedy as the source. If you see any errors after that, you can discuss them with me either here, on my Talk page, or on the article's Talk page. Thanks. There's no rush. I'm more interested in doing it accurately than doing it easily. It's better to talk about one sentence at a time than to remove many edits. One of your sources was a Google references that didn't have any content. You're right about shellac v. vinyl. Sentence spacing and paragraph spacing will be changed in time as I add more information. Click on my name for more help.
Vmavanti (talk) 18:18, 2 June 2021 (UTC) - Let's take your first source. It's a good one. In fact, I didn't know it was available for free online, though I might buy it anyway. The problem is your citation doesn't refer to the page number where the information comes from. It only refers to the cover of the book. Second, every sentence needs a citation. Third, this isn't wrong, but using ":0" as the title of reference isn't very informative. What about using the author's last name? You'll see after I add more informtion how it's done. Do you know about the templates for citation? It's the easiest way and helps maintain consistency throughout the web site. Click on my name for more info, or click the > sign to the left of "Cite" in the editing box. On the left is "Templates", click that and scroll down to "cite web" (for internet sources) or "cite book" (if you have the paper book in front of you as a source). Enter the necessary information in the box.
Vmavanti (talk) 18:26, 2 June 2021 (UTC)- I didn't want to make it seem like you were hijacking the article, but it was a lot of changes in too short of time leading to errors. I'm almost certain for my first source I listed a page, while google doesn't list page numbers I looked it up putting page 6 in the source.(The link didn't connect directly to the page but to the cover.) The sources I had were simple, nothing too heavy, as I reused some of the sources from the main Gennett article. In my opinion, the article should've had gradual changes, not cutting out half and leaving out some important aspects. Most of the punctuation and grammar was also being gradually improved. Benjamin.P.L (talk) 20:24, June 2, 2021 (UTC)
- Do you have the book in front of you? You can't use a Wikipedia article as a source for another Wikipedia article. I see that you are a beginner. I feel bad that you didn't get better advice from the beginning.
Vmavanti (talk) 23:14, 2 June 2021 (UTC)- I did it was page 6 or 7, you can see the pages listed on the amazon free preview. I might have gotten the pages swapped(Which I admit), but I did list a page number. You misunderstood me, not that I used another wiki article as a source but I pulled the sources from the other article for the same subjects.(Like mentioning some of the musicians who recorded for Gennett.) Benjamin.P.L (talk) 23:28, June 2, 2021 (UTC)
- OK, I'll check the Google Books version for the preview pages. Maybe page 6 or 7 has information you used. I'll restore any sourced material, but we have to go more or less one sentence at a time. Have you looked at the information I added today from the Rick Kennedy book?
Vmavanti (talk) 23:40, 2 June 2021 (UTC) - Do you see any errors in the existing version?
Vmavanti (talk) 00:03, 4 June 2021 (UTC)- Excuse my late response. I haven't had the chance to thoroughly go through it, but a quick skim it does look better with no major problems.Benjamin.P.L (talk) 17:59, June 5, 2021 (UTC)

[edit]Hello! I'm currently working on a project to get all U.S. first ladies articles to Good Article status. I noticed that you did some work on the article for Sarah Childress Polk a few years ago, and you're the article's primary author. I wanted to know if you had any interest in revisiting the article to get it up to GA. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 20:21, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
