Welcome, and info on signatures
[edit]Welcome
[edit]Welcome!
Hello, Barkjon, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:
- The five pillars of Wikipedia
- How to edit a page
- Help pages
- Tutorial
- How to write a great article
- Manual of Style
I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question and then place helpme
before the question on your talk page. Again, welcome! -- John Broughton (♫♫) 22:38, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
Signatures
[edit]You'll find general info about signatures at Wikipedia:Signatures. If you want to change yours, see Wikipedia:How to fix your signature for general info. A nice selection of signatures is at User:Athaenara/Gallery. For real customization, see Wikipedia:Smurrayinchester's signature tutorial and User:NikoSilver/Signature shop.
To answer your question about how I did my signature, I basically combined the script font from a signature that I saw (which I liked) with the superscript that's found in a lot of signatures, but I chose a different character for the superscript.
Or, to answer your question even more basically: if you go into edit mode for this page, you can see the underlying code.
P.S. Please do focus on editing Wikipedia, not just creating the fanciest signature that you possibly can. We don't discourage individuality here, but per WP:NOT, this isn't a social networking site. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 22:38, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the info! I just made a new signature!(Well, I tried to:-()--<font color="black">Barkjon</font> <font color="red">talk</font> (talk) 23:24, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
- Now I got it workin'!--Barkjon talk 23:26, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
- --Barkjon talk 23:34, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
- --Barkjon talk 23:40, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
- --Barkjon talk 23:44, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
- ----"Barkjon" talk 20:28, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
- --'"Barkjon"' talk 20:30, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
- For bolding, you just put three apostrophes before and after what you want bolded. To be specific:
- --<font color="black">Barkjon</font> <font color="red">talk</font>
- That would bold the word "talk" but not the front half of the signature.
- You'll find more about wikimarkup/wikicode at Wikipedia:How to edit a page#Wiki markup. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 00:49, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
- P.S. I strongly advise against making your talk page link red, as it is now. A red link normally means that a page doesn't exist, and an editor who doesn't have a talk page is normally a complete newbie. Editors like me tend (sometimes wrongly) to consider comments by complete newbies to be less useful or less likely to be right. Plus you going to confuse someone who clicks on the red link, expecting to see a "create this page" option, and who might be prepared to put a welcome message on the new page, only to discover that the page already exists. (In short, try green or yellow or gray or violet or something other than red; blue isn't a bad color either.) -- John Broughton (♫♫) 01:18, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Just click on any link in the box I put below (also found at the bottom of WP:UBX and copy-and-paste the code of the userbox you want into your user page. Hey! I noticed that you're a big fan of the Redwall series. Would you like to come join our Redwall WikiProject? If you're interested, add your name to the Participants list. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions! GlassCobra 00:30, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
WikiProject Redwall Roll-Call
[edit]Hey there! Your username is listed on the WikiProject Redwall participants list, but we are unsure as to which editors are still active on the project. Your name has therefore been moved to a "Potentially Active" list. If you still consider yourself an active WikiProject Redwall editor, please move your name from the "Potentially Active" list to the "Active Participants" list. You may also wish to add to your userpage, if you haven't done so already. Conversely, if you do not wish to be considered a member of the WikiProject, leave your name where it is and it will be moved to the "Inactive" list. If you wish to make a clean break with the Project, however, you may move your name to the "Inactive" list. Thanks! ~~~~ |

Adoption
[edit]Hello, Barkjon! Couldn't help but notice you wish to be adopted. I have been here for six months, and if you'd like, I can adopt you. Please drop me a line if you'd like that. Thanks. Cheers,JetLover (Report a mistake) 23:07, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
- Sure! If you have any questions, just ask me on my talk page. I'll also monitor you contributions and give you tips. Oh, and I'd like to note that when you want to start a new topic on a talk page, press the + button next to the edit button. Thanks! Cheers,JetLover (Report a mistake) 22:28, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Multiple WikiProjects
[edit]Sure, you can be in as many WikiProjects as you want to be. Don't spread yourself too thin. And don't join just to collect a userbox and get a welcome notice (I'm sure you won't). Remember, also, that the difference between an editor who is a "member" of a WikiProject and an editor who is not is (a) the first editor put his/her name on the WikiProject page, the second did not, and (b) the first editor will get a newsletter, if/when the WikiProject puts one out, the second won't. In other words, no big deal. You can participate all you want in all the collaborations and other activities of a WikiProject without ever signing up. So just enjoy yourself, and please contribute to Wikipedia, in whatever way you prefer. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 01:47, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
OK! Thanks for the info. Just today, I realized that being in multiple WikiProjects sorta gets, hmmm, how should I phrase it... "out of hand"? --~Barkjon- talk 01:49, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
- It's easier to think of things to do, than to grind through the work of doing them. But there is no deadline, so as long as you participate in each WikiProject that you join, eventually, then it's all good. When you are ready to contribute to a WikiProject, work will be waiting for you. You may also find that if you dabble in many places now, then later when you gain more editing experience, you will learn new things and remember some articles you worked on earlier, which can benefit from the new feature you learned. --Teratornis 03:34, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
Sorry
[edit]Sorry, but I don't want to be in the Christianity WikiProject. I don't feel I know enough about that to join it.--~Barkjon- talk 01:59, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
Editor Review
[edit]Hello, Barkjon. I noticed in your editor review, you said your best contribution to Wikipedia was your signature. You might want to change that, a signature isn't a contribution. Thanks! [edit]Hello, Barkjon! You know, there's this really nice place to go if you want to design your own userpage. It's called the userpage design center. Signature
[edit]Hi Barkjon. I noticed you had posted a request at the Signature shop. Sorry for being away and not noticing. I see you have a very attractive signature right now, probably self-made. I can help if you wish, but I really like the one you use now, so here's a small tweak in your code:
Before[edit]
--~<font color=" grey">Barkjon</font>- <font color="red">talk</font>
118 characters
|
After[edit]
--~<font color="grey">Barkjon</font>- <font color="red">talk</font>
106 characters
|
I removed the redundant superscript codes () and cropped redundant spaces. They look exactly the same. Hope that helps. Cheers! NikoSilver 09:22, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
I really like it better, but I'd still ike it if you made me one like the sig I requessted, so I can choose which is better. And yes, it is handmade.--~Barkjon- talk 16:43, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
Ok, then step in the shop please. I need some feedback. NikoSilver 22:34, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
Beanie Baby list
[edit]Hi, I noticed you have made some contributions to the page List of Ty Beanie Babies. I don't know if you are the same person who has made all those anonymous edits to this page, but I noticed, you have worked on it.
Since this page will take so long to complete, I am looking for others to help in its construction. Any help is appreciated. This can mean making major additions to the current list, or else adding even one beanie at a time that you know about. Or it can be fixing a red link so it links to an article that describes that beanie in further detail, or contributing additional information about one that is on the list already. Any help is appreciated.
I have tried to get a WikiProject Beanie Babies started, and to increase existing writing on Wikipedia about Beanie Babies, since they are notable, and many facts about particular beanies are encyclopedic. So far, I have shyed away from having article about single beanies, but rather, made articles about groups of beanies that have common notability. You can look under to see what is there already, and add anything you think may be suitable to these articles.Xyz7890 (talk) 22:45, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
Ok. I love stuffed animals, especially Beanie Babies, and I'll try to help you get a WikiProject beanie babies started. P.S. You know where to request WikiProjects? I was trying to start a Club Penguin one.-- Barkjon 15:16, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your support in my RfA. It was definitely a dramatic debate, that landed on WP:100! I paid close attention to everything that was said, and, where possible, I will try to incorporate the (constructive) criticism towards being a better administrator. I'm taking things slowly for now, partially because of the holiday season and all the off-wiki distractions. :) I'm also working my way through the Wikipedia:New admin school and double-checking the relevant policies, and will gradually phase into the use of the new tools. My main goals are to help out with various backlogs, but I also fully intend to keep on writing articles, as there are several more that I definitely want to get to WP:FA status! Thanks again, and have a great new year, --Elonka 07:30, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Reverting anon edits
[edit]Hello Barkjon, I noticed that you have been reverting a lot of edits by anonymous editors. Some of your reverts seem unreasonable. In future, please can you give a reason for your reverts in the edit summaries? Thank you. Sam Staton (talk) 15:39, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
- I'd like to add that the use of the rollback tool is restricted to only reverting blatant obvious vandalism. I've gone through your contribs list, and I'm seeing some use of the tool that's questionable. Please don't revert anything but blatant vandalism using the rollback tool. The tool can be removed in that case. - Philippe | Talk 16:04, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
- I was coming here to issue a warning concerning inappropriate rollback usage, but it appears the matter has already been addressed. I would like to reiterate the above cautions: rollback is only to be used for blatant vandalism. Rollbacking such as this does not fall under this remit. If an editor makes a good-faith contribution (such as tweaking the code of an article, even if it doesn't fall in line with the other articles), use undo, rather than rollback, and hence give them the courtesy of an explanation in the edit summary.
- I look forward to observing your co-operation in this matter: if that is not forthcoming, it is likely that your rollback access will be removed. Don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any further queries. Kind regards, Anthøny 16:11, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, I shall only revert obvious vandalism now. Thanks for the tip, anyway.-- Barkjon 17:52, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
- Not a problem, and thank you for understanding. All the best, Anthøny 18:38, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
