Making progress

It's slow, but there is progress nonetheless. Only 1 more trip to the former residence needed for the move to be complete. Then comes the unpacking while the remodeling is taking place - NOT FUN.😳 I'm still checking-in here when I can but don't have much time to volunteer as I once did, at least not until after I put my house is order...literally. And then there's Ying and Yang that also needs my undivided attention. Atsme 💬 📧 16:43, 19 October 2021 (UTC)

I'm watching here, and I'm glad that you are making progress, and sad that it's no fun. Know that there are folks here who are looking forward to your return, whenever you are ready. (And you just got a glowing review in "guess where": [1].) --Tryptofish (talk) 20:26, 19 October 2021 (UTC)
😂 🎭 Thank you, Tryp. My spirits are high but my butt is dragging. The "reviewer" is a character indeed and with a big heart. I cherish the fun times I've shared with all my Wikifriends. I think he is off the mark in his definition of me (and Kirk) but I respect his commitment to his beliefs (and to Picard because, after all, Star Trek: The Next Generation does win on the special effects). October songs

Thank you for improving articles in October! - Today: see yourself, read about a hymn praying to not be on earth in vain, about a comics artist whose characters have character (another collaboration of the "perennial gang", broken by one of us banned), and in memory of the last prima donna assoluta, Edita Gruberová. I had to go to two grave sites last week, one who died now, one who died 10 years ago, so standing upright and in black seems appropriate. The image is great, but I find AN and ANI just hopeless. You want to get rid of an editor? Thank you for your spirit! The memory of SlimVirgin is pictured again, in the context of my dangerous thoughts about arbcom. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:20, 29 November 2021 (UTC)

Sweet Gerda, hope for change is what keeps me going. We just have to keep in mind that arbs are only human, and have taken on an extremely challenging (and thankless) role as volunteers. What we really need are more wikignomes, content creators and respect for one another minus the vandals, trolls, ideologues, paid editors and RGW warriors. Our work environment would be absolutely mahvelous, and there wouldn't be a need for ArbCom. Atsme 💬 📧 19:48, 29 November 2021 (UTC)

Thank You for your Arbitration Committee Elections 2021 Voter Guide

Hello Atsme, I would like to thank you for publishing and providing your voter guide for Arbitration Committee Elections 2021 at User:Atsme/ACE2021. It has been very helpful and useful to me in learning about the pros & cons of all the different candidates with respect to their suitability for Arbitration Committee. It had proper detailed analysis and rationale on every candidate and helped me in voting informatively. Thanks. TheGeneralUser (talk) 01:16, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

  • Thank you for the acknowledgement, TheGeneralUser. It's good to know you gained some benefit. Happy editing!!

Hi Atsme. I liked your guide and it's my guess it will fairly accurately reflect the results. Unfortunately it came a bit late for most users - over 52% of the votes were cast on day 1 of the ballot. You might find this analysis of the campaign to be of interest. You are welcome to leave your thoughts on its talk page. Take care, Chris Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:27, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

  • Hi, Kudz!! Good to hear from you!! Yes, I was late this year but with good reason. I'm calling it the move from hell (going on 5 mos now) but it's finally winding down; although there is still work settling in at the new place. I truly appreciated your treatment of the guide and thoughtful evaluations. I try to read all the guides to see if there was anything I may have overlooked in a candidate - both good and bad. I had planned to drop by your page with a thank you and appreciate your invitation which was perfect timing. I'm looking forward to the outcome of the election because, as you know, my focus is on DS/AE reform. As ever, Atsme 💬 📧 12:18, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
I never really understood what DS/AE was all about. It is a contentious area both in the way it's run and the people who are affected by it and I can understand you wanting it reformed. As an admin, I stayed well away from it - I had enough other areas to keep me busy! Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 12:34, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
It's an open door to WP:POV creep and provides an unfair first advantage. To that add the ambiguity of our PAGs and you have the perfect storm - one that coordinated POV warriors can survive with help from their pocket admins. If a single editor is trying to maintain NPOV in the presence of a few POV warriors who are whitewashing or coatracking, and a biased admin is tracking that editor & happens to support the ideology of the POV warriors, guess who gets slapped with an indef AE action that is extremely difficult to reverse or remove? Worse yet, if that editor presents productive arguments that conflict with the prevailing ideology, the enforcing admin may make an attempt at cognitive restructuring of the punished editor's thought process and if they don't agree to change to align with the thinking of the enforcing admin, often by being submissive to the admin "master" who imposed the irreversible action, the punishment continues. If the editor takes it to ARCA to appeal, the arbs tend to support the acting admin, (rarely actually read the diffs in context). The same applies to AE. It is all too subjective, and a detriment to the project overall. We cannot ignore the fact that we do have a few prejudiced admins who should not be acting against editors they are prejudiced against while pretending they're simply doing their job as an admin to stop disruption. Atsme 💬 📧 13:15, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
I appreciate you both, Astme and Kudpung. My first experience with Arbcom involved you both, among several other editors I respect. I'm not a huge fan of the committee or its decisions but I do feel it represents a cross section of the community and our admin corps in general. I didn't vote this year and I will tell you why. I didn't feel it my place to vote for a group of people, many of which I respect highly as individuals and editors, with whom I never intend to engage even if brought before them. I would rather just walk away than be subjected to what appears to be a circus show of trying to one up each other on how much mud can be slung in an accused's direction. I'm not saying there shouldn't be negative aspects brought out in a case. Some kind of negative interaction generates almost every case. It's the insatiable desire to put your foot on the neck of your "opponent", and yes, I said "opponent" because that's what nearly every case I have read feels like. No one here is my enemy and I feel no desire to get into arguments and heated discussions with anyone where attacking the other persons character comes into play. The gladiator battles ended centuries ago and I don't wish to see them come back in any form. I, personally, don't feel a single person running this year will alter or change anything, nor can they even if they wanted. It will remain the status quo. All that as it may be, I think you both did an amazing job with your voter guides and had I voted I would have definitely been one of those that waited so I would have been able to read your guides and use them as insight to making my decision. --ARoseWolf 15:10, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

It certainly does my heart good knowing that a Pulitzer prize winning investigative journalist had the balls to put his political leanings aside, despite all the unwarranted attacks he endured from colleagues, and published what otherwise would have remained unspoken truth. By doing so, he has vindicated so many of us who have been wrongfully castigated for properly critizing what were once considered reliable sources. A pretty handy tool I just stumbled across

Maybe I haven't been paying close enough attention, but a few minutes ago, I stumbled onto the Browse history interactively feature - it's a revision slider, or you could say it's the high speed rail to diffville - much faster than an Uber. I'm thinking it will help save lots of time for arbs and admins doing research and reading diffs in context to find the cause, who's responsible and why, or whatever else needs to be researched for context. Just go to "View history” on any article, or TP - even user pages - click on either cur|prev, and when the screen loads, look up in the menu bar about midway from the top. Browse history interactively is in the center of that bar, click on the knob you want (upper is the newer revision whereas the lower knob maps to older revisions), start sliding and enjoy the ride. ^_^ Atsme 💬 📧 02:46, 11 January 2022 (UTC)

Arbitration motion regarding American politics 2

The Arbitration Committee has resolved by motion that:

Atsme's topic ban from post-WWII Anti fascism in the United States is provisionally lifted for a period of twelve months. If at any point before 1 January 2023 an uninvolved administrator feels that Atsme is not able to edit productively in this area, they may re-impose the topic ban.

Congrats, Atsme! I was completely unaware until now that this had been going on. I hope that you find this to be happy news. After seeing the announcement, I went and read the discussion, and I just want to say that I think MONGO gave good advice going forward: that it's probably not worth the aggravation to actually engage in the topic area – for what it's worth. --Tryptofish (talk) 23:00, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
Thx, Tryp. MONGO always gives good advice. The issues that concerned me at Antifa (United States) and the Spronsen AfD have been fixed as I suggested from the get-go, and so has the non-included issue involving the Talk:Fascism template, which is now close enough to following consensus to not be of concern. It's pretty sad that it took 2+ years to get something that simple done...and by Jimbo, nonetheless! It's also sad that good-intentioned editors have had to endure relentless mistreatment before important accuracy issues were corrected. But hey, I'm retired as a publisher, so all I have to do now is practice WP:IDGAF until it becomes second nature. The biggest blessing about this move (personal home relocation) is that it has kept me preoccupied (and not necessarily joyously so). I'm truly looking forward to seeing a bright light at the end of this dark & seemingly infinite tunnel. We just moved the last batch of furniture and boxes to the new ranch today. Next comes the dreaded unpacking, organizing and placement - may need a construction dumpster - and when that's done, I'll be able to focus on the barn bar so we can host an editathon, and maybe have Ritchie333 flown in for our musical entertainment! Discretionary sanctions topic area changes

In a process that began last year with WP:DS2021, the Arbitration Committee is evaluating Discretionary Sanctions (DS) in order to improve it. A larger package of reforms is slated for sometime this year. From the work done so far, it became clear a number of areas may no longer need DS or that some DS areas may be overly broad.

The topics proposed for revocation are:

  • Senkaku islands
  • Waldorf education
  • Ancient Egyptian race controversy
  • Scientology
  • Landmark worldwide

The topics proposed for a rewording of what is covered under DS are:

  • India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan
  • Armenia/Azerbaijan

Additionally any Article probation topics not already revoked are proposed for revocation.

Community feedback is invited and welcome at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Motions. --Barkeep49 (talk) 16:59, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

See, anemone?

Hi Atsme, I hope things are going well. I just saw File:White tube sea anemone (Cerianthus membranaceus) 0439atsme.jpg at the top here, and thought wow another gorgeous photo, and then saw that you labeled it as Cerianthus membranaceus. I'm pretty familiar with that species, and I don't think the photo is it. Tube anemones typically have, well, tubes, usually kind of leathery, and normally burrowed into the sand, with just the oral disc and tentacles showing above. (They also are not sea anemones.) The animal in your photo has a fleshy stem without a tube, pedal attachment to the (shell? rock?) it's on, and the head region is branched with multiple short-tentacled polyps. I'm not exactly sure what it is, but I think it's likely to be a soft coral (octocoral) of the family Alcyoniidae. It might be some species of Sarcophyton, but I don't know which species. Alternatively, it could be some kind of true sea anemone. But in any case, it's a stunning specimen, and as always, a splendid photo of it. --Tryptofish (talk) 00:06, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

Oh my - thank you, Tryp. Good catch!! You are absolutely correct - it is not what is labeled. I'm embarrassed to have made such a huge mistake. I have no clue how that happened and it was long enough ago that I have little to no recollection of it. I just uploaded the photo to TinEye, the crawler searched billions of images and came up empty handed. I'll keep searching...Atsme 💬 📧 01:30, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

Glad to help. The white-plumed anemone certainly looks like a strong possibility. On the other hand, I looked in a (huge) book that I have about corals, and there's a photo there of an "unidentified Sarcophyton species that is also a very strong look-alike. I'm guessing that the only way to pin it down is to look at a very magnified close-up of the polyps. --Tryptofish (talk) 18:52, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
I would love to see that photo but I don't have a (huge), uhm...book like yours. Sounds like a coraloscopy is in order if we're examining polyps. Annnyway...at this point in time, all I have to go on are the photographs I shot. I just added one that shows a contracted anemone beside an erect one - funny how huge tubes contract like that, although this particular species does live in cold water. Oh well, you know what they say:
The best advice for a coral quarrel is: keep your friends close and your anenomes closer. ^_^ Atsme 💬 📧 20:01, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
(edit conflict) No, I did some more looking, and it is the anemone (Metridium). At the top of the stalk, the animal in your photo has a sort-of ring, out of which the branches with the polyps emerge. That makes it an anemone. A soft coral, on the other hand, would have had a smooth and continuous surface going from the stem to the branches. --Tryptofish (talk) 20:10, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
Alcohlics anemones: rehab for drunk sea critters & corals.
And after seeing the new version of the image, I'm even more sure that it's an anemone. Soft corals also contract, but they don't look like the one on the left in your photo (definitely no mouth in the center). Metridium it is! And yes, I'm glad not to be an enome of yours. (And the last time I was pulled aside for a random coraloscopy was when I went through TSA at the airport.) --Tryptofish (talk) 20:14, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
And, wow, what a gorgeous photo, and what fascinating creatures! --Tryptofish (talk) 20:16, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
But a sex toy with nematocysts? Pretty kinky. --Tryptofish (talk) 20:20, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
Thank you, Tryp - I added one more photo to show how much easier it is to be friends instead of anemones. B) It was quite difficult to shoot in the aquarium because of the thickness and curvature of the glass, and the varying degrees of light refraction coming from above and below water to create incredible prisms of color that would be difficult to recreate. I even like the skewed effect caused by the curvature of the glass, although many pros would consider it undesirable, particularly those who are focused on exact replication when capturing a moment whereas I see it more as artistic recreation. Atsme 💬 📧 21:12, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
I love it! (So much better than arguing about ArbCom, I can tell you that!) I see that you took the photo at the New England Aquarium, which is a magnificent place. And they have an excellent collection of cooler-water anemones. I know some of the staff aquarists/marine biologists there, and one of them tells an incredible story of getting veterinarian help for one of the big sharks in the central tank. They sedated the shark, and put it in the back seat of a car, and drove it to the vet. Just imagine seeing a car going down the highway with a live shark sitting in the back seat! True story. --Tryptofish (talk) 21:21, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
A shark in the back seat? Hmmm...it does sound kinda fishy. Yes indeed I spent time at NEA during the Boston WikiCon - it was a fun trip!! I do hope the Wikicons and manias will return. I was so looking forward to the Thailand Wikimania. Damn COVID! Atsme 💬 📧 21:44, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

An article that you nominated for FA status, American paddlefish, has been marked as "Satisfactory" by two editors, meaning that they believe the article meets the featured article criteria. Can you check and determine if the article meets the FA criteria? If it does, please mark it as "Satisfactory" on WP:URFA/2020B. If you have concerns about the article, we hope that you will fix it up or post your concerns on the article's talk page. If you have any questions, please go to the URFA/2020 talk page or ping me. Thanks for your help and happy editing! Z1720 (talk) 02:29, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

Thanks Atsme! I nominated the article for WP:TFA for a non-specific date. Please click here to join the discussion. Z1720 (talk) 13:49, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
That sounds great! But a little fishy. ^_^ Thanks for all you do to keep things ticking, Z1720!! Atsme 💬 📧 02:41, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

WP:AFC Helper News

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.

  • AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
  • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. Cheers, Primefac, via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 15:59, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

GA Reassessment

Staffordshire Bull Terrier has been nominated for a community good article reassessment. If you are interested in the discussion, please participate by adding your comments to the reassessment page. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, the good article status may be removed from the article. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 22:00, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

Atsme, please excuse the "piteous" – I shouldn't have used that word, and have struck it. Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:07, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
Thank you, JLAN. Atsme 💬 📧 23:09, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
To my TP watchers - if you have time, indulge yourselves and read the 2 articles: Bull and terrier, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Atsme 💬 📧 23:08, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
Responding as a TP watcher. I'm not going to get involved in the GA reassessment because... I just won't. But I took a look at the GAR, and it looks to me like you and Calvaryman still have the same differences in view that were there at the RSN discussion. And it looks like the dispute makes the page "unstable" in a way that renders it ineligible as a GA (which I think it does). I don't know how to resolve your disagreement. But my advice, as a TP watcher, is that you have two broad options: (1) reach a compromise with Calvaryman, or (2) accept the delisting. --Tryptofish (talk) 23:19, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
At this point, WP:IDGAF. Atsme 💬 📧 00:09, 5 March 2022 (UTC)
Understood. Please be of good cheer; in the long run, these things on WP just don't matter. --Tryptofish (talk) 19:32, 5 March 2022 (UTC)
It's difficult to maintain good cheer when being bullied, interrogated, and character assassinated. It's not the same person we know who behaves in a similar manner, but sure sounds like him. I'm pretty damn sure that Elon Musk was not pushing cryonics and promising pitbull dog owners that their bulldog-terrier crossbreeds would be renamed, revived and returned in the 21st century as Staffordshire Bull Terriers. I'm tired of having to deal with grown men who throw temper tantrums and bully editors when they don't get their way. It's harrassment, Tryp, and certainly not collegial behavior. As for the content, I cannot imagine why anyone would support a flat-earth theory and accept it as a statement of fact in Wikivoice because that is exactly what is being asked of us. I don't want my good name associated with such garbage - and probably wouldn't care as much if I had the protection of anonymity, but I don't. Liken it to someone arguing with you about an 1800s sub-species of monkeys that resembled bulky spider monkeys that had been crossed with baboons and gorillas in the lowland evergreen forests in Guyana, and labeled Big Foot. A century later, people started writing articles and books about it - referencing anecdotal accounts from the 1800s because there is nothing else to go on. Some conspiracy theorists were convinced that the BigFoot we hear about today is the original Big Foot from the lowland evergreen forests in Guyana. That's a pretty good analogy of my situation, although, I probably wouldn't oppose stating that particular theory in Wikivoice.[FBDB] Atsme 💬 📧 22:42, 5 March 2022 (UTC)
I took a quick look back at the GAR, and it looks like both of you are very unhappy with the situation. And of course I'm saddened to see that. (Don't worry, I'm not really sad; you know what I mean.) I think that just letting it go is the best course of action. In case you haven't seen it before, which you probably have, here's a cheer-up video about dogs: [4]. --Tryptofish (talk) 21:26, 6 March 2022 (UTC)
By the way, I went to high school with Bigfoot. And I have documents to prove it. --Tryptofish (talk) 21:29, 6 March 2022 (UTC)
Your high school sweetheart? Hopefully, the proof isn't a marriage certificate. As for the GA – we went through hell trying to appease 2 POV warriors in order to get that GA promoted. A helluva lotta work went into it, so with that in mind, I don't see one valid reason to inject inaccurate flat-earth theory in Wikivoice in that article. There's already more than enough included per DUE. It would be nice if we could improve the sources, but there just aren't many books written about 18th & 19th-century mongrels, to put it bluntly. Back in 2019, two highly disruptive editors caused that GA review to be put on hold. One was a relentless BSL advocate - wants all bully breeds to be exterminated. I'm not sure if there's a connection, but it led to the disparagement and outing of 2 editors by another BSL advocate off-Wiki. The WP editor was t-banned, then got caught socking which led to an indef. The other disruptive editor finally admitted there were 2 theories about the origins, apologized to us, and unwatched the article – only to return a few months later with a vengeance. He simply won't stop kicking that dead horse. So to say it's sad is an understatement. Maybe musicman or songmaker will play us a sad song. Atsme 💬 📧 02:17, 7 March 2022 (UTC)

American paddlefish scheduled for TFA

This is to let you know that the American paddlefish article will be rerun as today's featured article on April 23, 2022. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/April 23, 2022, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.

For Featured Articles promoted recently, there will be an existing blurb linked from the FAC talk page, which is likely to be transferred to the TFA page by a coordinator at some point.

We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 14:30, 7 March 2022 (UTC)

Oh, YAY!!! Thank you Jimfbleak. It was a fun article to collaborate on back in 2014, and even more fun now knowing it withstood the test of time, and didn't require any further editing or updates. Gotta love when that happens! It's watchlisted! Atsme 💬 📧 19:00, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
I've posted this many times before, but for those who haven't previously seen it, this is my high school yearbook photo. --Tryptofish
Well, at least this is good news. And it really is! Congratulations, and well-earned. --Tryptofish (talk) 19:13, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
Thank you, Tryp. And I'm pretty certain it never would've happened had there been a flat-earth theory stated in WikiVoice in that article. yes Atsme 💬 📧 19:21, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
I'm going to start a rumor that the American paddlefish is actually Bigfoot. --Tryptofish (talk) 19:24, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
^_^ Atsme 💬 📧 19:32, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
Tryptofish, It is! I've seen it. It could have just been a grizzly with a salmon in its mouth paddling across the river but we'll go with the Bigfoot paddlefish story. So when do I get my book deal? lol --ARoseWolf 19:50, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
I've got a better book deal. That grizzly had me in its mouth. --Tryptofish (talk) 19:53, 7 March 2022 (UTC)

Too funny! I'm a little bit distracted because I actually got back in the saddle yesterday after 15 yrs of being focused on scuba diving & underwater/nature photography. I think I've been bitten by the horse bug again, and I haven't been immunized. I rode my daughter's cutting horse - a nice little mare with lots of money-earning potential. Daughter already marked a 75 (out of a possible 80 score). I was living on Bonaire during COVID's introduction, and could only watch the horse events via live feeds and video from afar. Now that I'm back in Texas, the bug bit me!! It's in my blood - has been since birth - but so is being near the ocean. I must be a reincarnated seahorse, which may explain the collegial relationship with Tryptofish - we share the same ocean as terrestrials - except for Big Foot which is a bit of a [stretch]. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Atsme (talkcontribs) 16:35, March 7, 2022 (UTC)
It just occurred to me: is Antifa the opposite of TFA? --Tryptofish (talk) 20:43, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
😂 If it is, I'll thank my lucky stars that t-ban was lifted!! Atsme 💬 📧 20:46, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
To me, this is what community is. This is the attitude that builds this encyclopedia into something for all people. We come from very different places. We have very different tastes in things. But that is beautiful to me. I was attracted to the both of you because of our differences and the openness to express them without feeling like we had to slight someone else to do it. I celebrate our unique Songs and encourage their growth. It's a hard concept for most to understand. I cherish our differences. They are like every shade of color found in a kaleidoscope. Without even one its beauty is diminished. I consider you both friends here and truly appreciate our interactions. --ARoseWolf 13:24, 8 March 2022 (UTC)

Awwww...so sweet, and inspirational, ARoseWolf. I agree 100%. Laughter is the best medicine. Life can be such an amazing adventure if we can learn to look past the hate and negativity - it's born of ignorance. Focus on positive interactions–it's the only way to grow. Hate is shrink-wrap with all its suffocating attributes. Atsme 💬 📧 13:49, 8 March 2022 (UTC)

2022 began happily with vacation. I uploaded images but stopped at 22 January - click on songs. 30 January means 10 years of Precious. It's also the birthday of a friend, - I'm so happy I mentioned his DYK on his 90th birthday when he was still alive. I have a great singer on DYK whom I heard, Elena Guseva, and wait for a Recent death appearance of Georg Christoph Biller whom I saw in action. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:04, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
