WikiCup 2022 July newsletter

Extended content

The third round of the 2022 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 180 points, which is a lower figure than last year when 294 points were needed to progress to round 4. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, with 746 points, a tally built both on snooker and other sports topics, and on more general subjects.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, with 683 points, garnered mostly from "In the news" items and related DYKs.
  • Sammi Brie, with 527, from a variety of submissions related to radio and television stations.

Between them contestants achieved 5 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 51 good articles, 149 DYK entries, 68 ITN entries, and 109 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article nomination, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Trivia

Extended content

Why do you insist on including absolute trivia in articles? E.g. on Raygun Lounge, why should we include the statement that they served beer or organised a trivia night? Fram (talk) 13:51, 15 July 2022 (UTC)

@Fram I figured an overview of the venue should mention food/drink options and past events, all of which are mentioned in Wikipedia-appropriate sources. Seems like relevant info for me, but clearly you disagree. Happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 13:53, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
Because we are an encyclopedia and not a repeater of routine local news coverage? Things which get mentioned in passing or announced at the time of happening are rarely good to be included in our articles, just like we don't include e.g. all appearances a politician makes at local events (even though they will be covered in local, reliable news). Pubs organize quizzes, happy hours, ... Should all this[1] get included? Or are we then just adding advertising as padding for our articles? A bar is not described by stating that they offer beer and wine, or by repeating the menu from a random date. If a bar is truly notable for their range of beers, then adding such a claim with source is of course relevant; but if a random local articles mentions that "bar X, which offers a wide range of beer, wine, and gin, organizes a Y tomorrow", then this is trivia, typical padding which is fine in such "journalism", but not here. Fram (talk) 14:06, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
(shrug), Ok! I'm not going to fight to keep the content. Take care ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:08, 15 July 2022 (UTC)

what happens when an impatient new editor asks for a review of their draft and you don't chase them off?

Extended content

I noticed that you had responded to an off-topic post at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Council. I have found it more helpful to revert those messages per WP:NOTAFORUM and warn the editor involved. Responding to requests only encourages more of same. I find Twinkle and other semi-automated tools to be of great help in this regard so that those of us longterm contributors can focus on contributing. Typing out a well-thought answer pointing to new editor to a better talk page is friendly and useful to them but it's not optimal for us, unless you just prefer being kind. I declined their draft, which is ultimately solving the problem. Chris Troutman (talk) 15:18, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

I was just trying to be helpful. Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:20, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

Simple images

Extended content

Hello!

For an image to be non-free it has to meet the threshold of originality of the country where it was created. If it doesn't, then it can't be copyrighted. A file's Wikipedia license should of course reflect this. Please think about if a file really meets the TOO before you automatically mark it with a non-free license. For example File:The Triple Door logo.png probably doesn't even meet the TOO anywhere in the world and I hence retagged it with {{PD-simple}}. For files that are below the TOO in both the country where it is from and the US then licenses such as {{PD-simple}} (for non-logos or logos without text) and {{PD-textlogo}} (for logos with text) are good. For files that are above the TOO in the country where it's from, but below the TOO in the US, please use {{PD-ineligible-USonly}} and have the country where it's from as parameter 1, see for example File:Podravka logo.svg. If you don't know the TOO, often Commons has a good page, see c:COM:TOO US, c:COM:TOO UK, c:COM:TOO Sweden etc. If you're totally unsure then it's better to guess that it's non-free but just don't do it automatically please. Anyway, happy editing! Jonteemil (talk) 01:19, 21 July 2022 (UTC)

I'm probably almost always going to upload business logos the same way, but thanks for the reminder! ---Another Believer (Talk) 01:24, 21 July 2022 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Batterfish requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company, corporation or organization that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Batterfish moved to draftspace

Resolved
Extended content

An article you recently created, Batterfish, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Liz Read! Talk! 05:56, 28 July 2022 (UTC)

Hello, Another Believer,
Like you, I am sweltering in PDX right now. I moved Batterfish to Draft space as it was tagged for speedy deletion for a lack of notability and I thought the tagging was reasonable for the article at the time I reviewed it. I didn't believe I could legitimately remove the tag so moving the article to Draft space was an alternative to deletion. I realize that you are a very experienced editor and I didn't mean to disrespect you and your contributions to the project and to articles on Oregon. But the draftification was a response to a speedy deletion tagging. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 01:27, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
@Liz No worries at all! I was not bothered by the tag or the move, I was just answering User:A loose necktie's questions in the section below. Stay cool in PDX and happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 01:30, 29 July 2022 (UTC)

Batterfish?

Extended content
Batterfish

The article on Batterfish, which still strikes me as an advertisement for this business, was moved to draft space by Liz, and you singlehandedly recreated it as a regular article, with no oversight and no one checking your work? Wow. You know how to make it happen. I guess there is no rule you are flouting by doing this (that I know of). Might have been more appropriate to recreate the article via the WP:AfC process, though. And why not? Because it is overburdened, backlogged, and might have resulted in the article being rejected? Maybe. All good reasons, no?

Just, wow. A loose necktie (talk) 19:51, 28 July 2022 (UTC)

Woah, plus what you did with the prods placed by Wani on Sara Hauman and Gabriel Pascuzzi? And you live in Portland? Because I am getting a sense that you may have a conflict of interest here... Not that I think you are paid, only that it looks like you may be biased with regard to the articles you are creating and recreating. I can see you have a much longer and larger edit history than I do. I wonder what you are thinking. A loose necktie (talk) 20:06, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
You can think of the move back to the main space as a rejection of your speedy deletion nomination. Also, I've expanded the article further. If you feel strongly about deleting the article then you can go to AfD. Yes, I rejected the PRODs for SH and GP, too, which I'm allowed to do. Yes, I live in Portland, and no, I don't have a conflict of interest. I've not done anything wrong here, and if you have issues with any of the articles you can share comments on their respective talk pages. Thanks and happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 20:41, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
Hello, A loose necktie,
I was surprised by the move out of Draft space but implying some kind of paid editing or conflict-of-interest is out-of-line and could be construed as a personal attack. Another Believer is a very experienced editor and while I might disagree with some of their decisions, you must assume good faith. That's not an unreasonable request for an editor that has almost made half a million edits! Liz Read! Talk! 01:31, 29 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi,

So I am yet still, new, in Wikipedia. But, I just wanted people to know that there’s a draft for Drag Race Mexico. Whenever I create a draft for Wikipedia, there’s someone who created in the mainspace and my draft article just ends up useless. How can I let people know there’s a draft? @JuanGLP Thanks for the note! You could post a link to the draft at Talk:Drag Race Mexico, but mostly you'll just want to be proactive about continuing to improve the draft and move into main space once there's enough sourcing to justify a new entry in the main space. In the meantime, editors might search for "Drag Race Mexico" in the main space and they should be directed to the most relevant article there (Drag Race (franchise)) instead of the draft space. You might also consider joining and watchlisting Wikipedia:WikiProject RuPaul's Drag Race -- we are an active group of editors who discuss and collaborate on articles related to the series. I hope this helps. Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:08, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Bolivia Carmichaels

Extended content
Bolivia Carmichaels

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Bolivia Carmichaels you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Mike Christie -- Mike Christie (talk) 13:02, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

Thank you! ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:44, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
I'm curious as to why you don't review at GA, if you don't mind me asking. You're a very experienced editor, and a capable writer, and Bolivia Carmichaels is going to be your 150th GA, according to your userpage. Any reason you don't review? There's always a backlog there, after all, and it's nice to contribute resources as well as use them. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 15:06, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
@Mike Christie Thanks again for your help. Yes, I probably should review Good article nominations now and then, but truth be told I enjoy creating content much more than reviewing content created by others. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:08, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
By the way, if you are interested, Flawless Shade should be a very similar review. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:08, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
I might review it if someone else doesn't get there first, but probably not for a day or two. Please do consider doing reviews -- I don't think any editor likes reviewing as much as they like creating content, and since there are plenty of editors who wouldn't make very good reviewers, those with the requisite skills can really help out. Anyway, congrats on the GA, and I may see you again if I pick up another of your nominations. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 15:14, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

The fourth round of the WikiCup has now finished. 383 points were required to reach the final, and the new round has got off to a flying start with all finalists already scoring. In round 4, Bloom6132 with 939 points was the highest points-scorer, with a combination of DYKs and In the news items, followed by BennyOnTheLoose, Sammi Brie and Lee Vilenski. The points of all contestants are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

At this stage, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For the remaining competitors, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them, and importantly, before the deadline on October 31st!

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Restoring edits by a banned editor

Extended content

While WP:BANREVERT allows for the restoration of edits made by banned editors, you need to have independent reasons for doing so (it's not a "vote") and you are taking full responsibility for the entirety of the content being restored. This globally-banned sockmaster has a history of adding unsourced and poorly sourced material, including blatant BLP violations, into articles, so you need to check every piece of information in the article to ensure that it is supported by a source meeting WP:RS. In addition, encouraging and supporting this sockmaster, who has made numerous threats of harm against multiple editors, is totally on you. If you believe there should be an article on any of the redirects I've reverted, Wikipedia would be better served if you wrote it yourself instead of supporting an abusive banned editor.-- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 21:59, 3 October 2022 (UTC)

I think the BLP details are well supported by reliable sources and I have added a couple more just to be sure. ☆ Bri (talk) 22:09, 3 October 2022 (UTC) (tps)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Hippo Hardware and Trading Company requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia.

Persia ☘ 17:04, 6 October 2022 (UTC)

Full linguistic katsu circuit

You might be interested to know the origin of the term katsu is derivative of "cutlet", probably French. So a "katsu burger" is a cutlet-burger, or in other words, a cutlet cutlet, I guess? ☆ Bri (talk) 22:05, 11 October 2022 (UTC)

No problem. The Everett Herald has become a more reliable source for restaurant news as of late thanks to some new hirings, but the region is definitely lacking in good sources overall. Eater doesn't seem to cover much of the lower-income suburban ring. SounderBruce 22:16, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
@SounderBruce Good to know, thanks! I'm using Eater Seattle and other outlets like Seattle Metropolitan, Thrillist, and The Seattle Times to at least get the ball rolling on lists of notable restaurants. There's quite a content gap w/r/t Seattle's food and restaurant scene. ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:25, 11 October 2022 (UTC)

Re: Jewish Delis

Hello. Just curious about the removals of many of the Jewish deli listings on List of Jewish delis. I understand removing the pages that don't have Wiki links but there are currently more Jewish delicatessens listed in California than New York and the pages listed there did a good job expanding the article without being overdone. Examples include Sarge's and B+H which don't necessarily need their own page but were needed for this page. The article St. Anne's Chapel (Marylhurst University) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Where's the substantive coverage? Do you think GNG doesn't apply to you?

Reywas92Talk 15:54, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

@Reywas92 Would you please consider sharing notability concerns on an article's talk page before jumping straight to AfD? It feels like you are following me and nominating articles for deletion as a form of punishment or something, which requires me to drop things I'm working on just because the AfD clock is ticking... ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:57, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
You should know how notability works and that nothing but one- or two-sentence listicle entries is not adequate. You are a great contributor to topics and places I am also interested in and this insinuation is wrong, but I believe that our notability standards are important and that articles should not be made without significant sources that extend beyond minor and routine local listings. I don't really buy the "dropping things" when you've had time to make over two dozen articles in the last week and you know that if there are barriers to finding sources within a week it can be relisted multiple times. There is no rush to have articles for every single local business at the Market before showing each is notable under GNG and NORG. Reywas92Talk 16:08, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
@Reywas92 You clearly follow my Wikipedia work. You say I'm a great contributor. But you're not giving me the benefit of the doubt or assuming good faith. I'm asking you nicely to please lay off the nominations. Your nominations are starting to feel targeted. Ghost Alley Espresso is another example of an unnecessary nomination, which forced me to fully expand an entry just because of AfD. Acknowledging we have slightly different goal posts re: notability on Wikipedia and you have every right to nominate pages for deletion, again, I'm asking you to please slow down. It takes me a lot more time to expand an article than it does for you to flag a page. ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:16, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
"forced me to fully expand an entry". Why does expansion have to be done under duress? You really are a tireless contributor, but it can feel like quantity over quality. These aren't targeted, but you're the only one making so many pages on typical local businesses or one-liners that statues or buildings exist. Reywas92Talk 17:44, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
@Reywas92 Well, I'm asking you to trust my judgment a bit more. Ghost Alley Espresso and Daily Dozen Doughnut Company are likely being kept, so there's some discrepancy with how you assess sourcing compared to other editors. You're under no obligation to comply with my request, but you're causing me a lot of stress so all I can do is ask you to try to make my editing experience easier. Thanks, ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:06, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
