Did you know that you can now use the visual diff tool on any page?

Sometimes, it is hard to see important changes in a wikitext diff. This screenshot of a wikitext diff (click to enlarge) shows that the paragraphs have been rearranged, but it does not highlight the removal of a word or the addition of a new sentence.

If you enable the Beta Feature for "⧼visualeditor-preference-visualdiffpage-label⧽", you will have a new option. It will give you a new box at the top of every diff page. This box will let you choose either diff system on any edit.

Click the toggle button to switch between visual and wikitext diffs.

In the visual diff, additions, removals, new links, and formatting changes will be highlighted. Other changes, such as changing the size of an image, are described in notes on the side.

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has spent most of their time supporting the 2017 wikitext editor mode, which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and improving the visual diff tool. Their work board is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor, and improving the visual diff tool.

Recent changes

  • The 2017 wikitext editor is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. It has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. The team have been comparing the performance of different editing environments. They have studied how long it takes to open the page and start typing. The study uses data for more than one million edits during December and January. Some changes have been made to improve the speed of the 2017 wikitext editor and the visual editor. Recently, the 2017 wikitext editor opened fastest for most edits, and the 2010 WikiEditor was fastest for some edits. More information will be posted at mw:Contributors/Projects/Editing performance.
  • The visual diff tool was developed for the visual editor. It is now available to all users of the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. When you review your changes, you can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. You can also enable the new Beta Feature for "Visual diffs". The Beta Feature lets you use the visual diff tool to view other people's edits on page histories and Special:RecentChanges. [1]
  • Wikitext syntax highlighting is available as a Beta Feature for both the 2017 wikitext editor and the 2010 wikitext editor. [2]
  • The citoid service automatically translates URLs, DOIs, ISBNs, and PubMed id numbers into wikitext citation templates. This tool has been used at the English Wikipedia for a long time. It is very popular and useful to editors, although it can be tricky for admins to set up. Other wikis can have this service, too. Please read the instructions. You can ask the team to help you enable citoid at your wiki.

CANPLACE

Please note that while CANPLACE does indeed require the province name to be present in the body text following a city's name, it does not necessarily require the city and province to be pipetexted together into a single link. If a city a city's article is already located at an undisambiguated title, and the text already says [[Toronto]], [[Ontario]], CANPLACE does not require you to convert that into [[Toronto|Toronto, Ontario]] instead. All CANPLACE means is that Ontario has to be present in the text — it does not impose a rule about how the city and province links need to be formatted. Thanks. @Bearcat: But putting two wlinks together like that is inappropriate under the MOS is it not? It makes two links look like one. Someone pointed that out to me. What do you think? Alaney2k (talk) 15:32, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
You also have the option of unlinking the province if you feel that strongly about it; there's no rule that actually requires the province's name to be linked at all, and in some cases the link may not actually be necessary at all (e.g. if the article has already linked the province name elsewhere). But there's no rule anywhere that requires the city and province names to be contained within a single link, even if you have to pipetext that into the link overtop an undisambiguated title. And at any rate, at my monitor resolution I can tell the difference between Toronto, Ontario and Toronto, Ontario, so I don't see how it inherently makes two links look like one. For some people, sure, it might — but that's definitely not universal, because I for one can distinguish two links in the separated format. Bearcat (talk) 15:38, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
@Bearcat: @Lordtobi: So what do you think about the articles where the link is [[Calgary]], [[Alberta|AB]], [[Canada|CAN]]? I've been making that into [[Calgary|Calgary, Alberta]], Canada to try to reduce the overlinking and observe canplace. That was a standard for a while for the hockey project. Should I always use the redirect? ( [[Calgary, Alberta]], Canada ) I've had editors not wanting a redirect there. Alaney2k (talk) 16:05, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
For U.S. and Canada, region is usually enough, especially when it has been established before hand that the topic is Canadian. I'd say either do [[Calgary, Alberta]] ; [[Calgary]], [[Alberta]] or [[Calgary]], Alberta. [[Calgary|Calgary, Alberta]] is again a NOPIPEr. Lordtobi () 16:23, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
This is in the infobox, so I leave in Canada. I'd rather not make the reader have to click to realize that a place in a named province is in Canada. The point you were definite on was not to use the one I was using. :-) But using [[Calgary]], [[Alberta]] as a model, seems to lead editors to use constructions like this: [[Red Deer, Alberta|Red Deer]], [[Alberta]], so I guess I will go with the redir consistently. You say that as though [[Red Deer, Alberta|Red Deer]], [[Alberta]] is actually a problem. You may not like it, but there's no actual reason why it's inherently invalid to do that — there's no policy or guideline that forbids it, and the only argument against it is that some editors don't like it. Thing is, intentionally using the "City, Province" redirect in lieu of [[City]], [[Province]], just like forcepiping the province name into the city link, entirely defeats the purpose of our ever having moved the cities to undisambiguated titles in the first place — if we're going to do that, then what other reason do we have left to not just move all the undabbed cities back to "City, Province" titles across the board? @Bearcat: It's not a question of me liking it or not. Would it not be wrong under NOPIPE? I am getting conflicting advice. Then you suggest linking as [[Calgary]], Alberta, Canada in the infobox? The purpose of the wikilink there is to link to the birthplace, not every jurisdiction it is within, is it not? And Red Deer would be [[Red Deer, Alberta|Red Deer]], Alberta, Canada? If you don't like coding [[Red Deer, Alberta|Red Deer]], [[Alberta]] you can use the pipe trick to just code [[Red Deer, Alberta|]], [[Alberta]] and get the exact same result. Mathglot (talk) 09:33, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
I'm surprised this trick even works, but I don't think it is a good inclusion in a publicly-editable space, as it can confuse many people (especially those that never coded). Lordtobi () 10:11, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
You kidding? The pipe trick is fantastic, specifically because it allows editors to link articles with parenthetical disambiguators without having to retype the actual name every link. (Remember, parentheticals are not part of the name of the subject, but added to give them a unique title as required by the software. The use of the comma convention for place names is just a variation in that that is seen in the real world.) Also note that when the pipe trick is employed, only the initial entry has just the pipe. The actual saved code, which the next editor would see if they edit by source, contains the pipes text. The person making the first edit enters [[Red Deer, Alberta|]], [[Alberta]], but the next person to look at the code to make an edit (presuming they're not usuing visual editor) sees [[Red Deer, Alberta|Red Deer]], [[Alberta]], and never even knows thenpipe trick was used in the first place. oknazevad (talk) 10:48, 23 March 2018 (UTC)

You mention above that by using [[Calgary]], [[Alberta]] leads people to using [[Red Deer, Alberta|Red Deer]], [[Alberta]], [[Canada]]. But of course it does, there is no guideline against this, and in many infoboxes, including the hockey one for example doing it this way was the discussed outcome of how locations were to be displayed. We have been switching the hockey one from [[Calgary]], [[Alberta|AB]], [[Canada|CAN]] to [[Calgary]], [[Alberta]], [[Canada]] slowly but noticed you have been combining links which will now have to be gone through as well. -DJSasso (talk) 11:53, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
Maybe I wasn't clear. It was a 'if you follow that logic, it leads to this' that leads to pipes. So it was a contradiction, IMO. I get contradictory advice all the time, BTW. I'd go with city/sovereign state for all Canadian, American & British articles, to match with the rest of the international community. But of course, it's not up to me. GoodDay (talk) 21:10, 30 March 2018 (UTC)

I get a half-dozen thanks for every one of your negative comments. I figure I am doing ok. The title of the paper is The New York Times. Therefore it is preferred per the cite you mentioned. That's what I figure. Alaney2k (talk) 19:26, 14 June 2018 (UTC)
I don't mind altering the text "New York Times" to "The New York Times" within the context of a reference, but see MOS:THETITLE on when the title is used as a modifier. Inserting "The" in this context can make the text more awkward, it's not an improvement, and it's already covered by the WP:MOS. Nitpicking polish (talk) 20:50, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

I'd say that it depends on whether the article "the" refers to the paper or to something else. Turning "The New York Times is a daily newspaper" into "The New York Times is a daily newspaper" seems harmless to me. Turning "The New York Times article on Monday..." into either "The New York Times article on Monday..." or "The The New York Times article on Monday..." makes the sentence more awkward, and seems like a good place to apply the exception in MOS:THETITLE. NY Times

Another good check would be to change your search to the regular expression "(\s)NY Times" and replace it with "$1The New York Times" . The "\s" makes sure that the character before the "N" is a space, tab, or new line, and the $1 will insert the same character before the word "The". --Ahecht (TALK

Ah, if you're using regex, you might try \W rather than \s - \W (note, capital W) will match any non-word character. That will allow "NY Times" (a common construct in citations), which would be excluded by \s (matches only whitespace). Regards, Tarl N. (discuss) 17:28, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

Removal of duplicate wikilinks, in different references

Hello! Why do you remove duplicate wikilinks when they are wikilinked in different reference tags? Isn't it fine to wikilink to the work in each reference, despite having appeared elsewhere in the article? Best regards, --Treetear (talk) 13:37, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

It's a judgment call. I did not think they were helpful to the reader. They are basically extra links and close together. If the link to the paper was important, then it would be in the prose. E.g. A survey commissioned by The New York Times found ... But these are just basically sources linked to the paper, and it is a pretty well-known paper. The urls in the cites are what people care about. Proposal to split Economic_inequality

Hello, I would like to split Economic inequality. According to this link the article is 202 kB and WP:SIZESPLIT suggests an article be split after 40 kB. Also, on the top of the page is a banner that is two years old suggesting the article should be split.

Since I am new, I would like to build a consensus first, rather than WP:BRD. To that end, I put a post on Talk:Economic_inequality and am contacting everyone who has edited the page in the past month.

I appreciate your concern; WikiWomen has a list of articles such as those that might (and as of late, have been) coming up. I suggest you monitor here, as I do, and read through the list, and if there are any with the possibility of improvement or saving with reliable sources, you might jump in and give it a go, as I have. You probably would do far better on the sports figures than I would, as I'm quite ignorant of sports (but I'm fairly good with finding reliable sources). The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Governor General duties

The Governor General office initiated a review of the organizations that it supports, which is still ongoing over a year later. As a result, the current Governor General has been going to a lot fewer events than the previous one. She even missed the Governor General's Medals in Architecture and the Governor General's History Awards ceremonies; Rideau Hall said the latter was due to scheduling conflicts. Official word is that the Governor General's schedule remains busy and so I don't believe she said anything about not having a lot to do. isaacl (talk) 16:46, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

    • Yeah, there was a report that said she was trying to get involved in policy to an extent that is unusual for the Governor General. I don't do this often, so apologies for the second message. I think you just changed the city of death to Baltimore. This is correct, but that note from the Globe and Mail lists the date of death incorrectly. Boyd died on November 15, which can be confirmed from an obit in the Baltimore Sun on November 18, 1940. Since the last newsletter, the team has released two new features for the mobile visual editor and has started developing three more. All of this work is part of the team's goal to make editing on mobile web simpler.

Recent releases

The mobile visual editor is a simpler editing tool, for smartphones and tablets using the mobile site. The Editing team has recently launched two new features to improve the mobile visual editor:

  1. Section editing
    • The purpose is to help contributors focus on their edits.
    • The team studied this with an A/B test. This test showed that contributors who could use section editing were 1% more likely to publish the edits they started than people with only full-page editing.
  2. Loading overlay
    • The purpose is to smooth the transition between reading and editing.

Section editing and the new loading overlay are now available to everyone using the mobile visual editor.

New and active projects

This is a list of our most active projects. Watch these pages to learn about project updates and to share your input on new designs, prototypes and research findings.

  • Edit cards: This is a clearer way to add and edit links, citations, images, templates, etc. in articles. You can try this feature now. Go here to see how: 📲Try Edit Cards.
  • Mobile toolbar refresh: This project will learn if contributors are more successful when the editing tools are easier to recognize.
  • Mobile visual editor availability: This A/B test asks: Are newer contributors more successful if they use the mobile visual editor? We are collaborating with 20 Wikipedias to answer this question.
  • Usability improvements: This project will make the mobile visual editor easier to use.  The goal is to let contributors stay focused on editing and to feel more confident in the editing tools.

Looking ahead

  • Wikimania: Several members of the Editing Team will be attending Wikimania in August 2019. They will lead a session about mobile editing in the Community Growth space. Talk to them about how editing can be improved.
  • Talk Pages: In the coming months, the Editing Team will begin improving talk pages and communication on the wikis.

AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!

Greetings!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Talk Pages

The Talk Pages Consultation was a global consultation to define better tools for wiki communication. From February through June 2019, more than 500 volunteers on 20 wikis, across 15 languages and multiple projects, came together with members of the Foundation to create a product direction for a set of discussion tools. The Phase 2 Report of the Talk Page Consultation was published in August. It summarizes the product direction the team has started to work on, which you can read more about here: Talk Page Project project page.

The team needs and wants your help at this early stage. They are starting to develop the first idea. Please add your name to the "Getting involved" section of the project page, if you would like to hear about opportunities to participate.

Mobile visual editor

The Editing team is trying to make it simpler to edit on mobile devices. The team is changing the visual editor on mobile. If you have something to say about editing on a mobile device, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.

What happens when you click on a link. The new Edit Card is bigger and has more options for editing links.
The editing toolbar is changing in the mobile visual editor. The old system had two different toolbars. Now, all the buttons are together. Tell the team what you think about the new toolbar.
  • In September, the Editing team updated the mobile visual editor's editing toolbar. Anyone could see these changes in the mobile visual editor.
    • One toolbar: All of the editing tools are located in one toolbar. Previously, the toolbar changed when you clicked on different things.
    • New navigation: The buttons for moving forward and backward in the edit flow have changed.
    • Seamless switching: an improved workflow for switching between the visual and wikitext modes.
  • Feedback: You can try the refreshed toolbar by opening the mobile VisualEditor on a smartphone. Please post your feedback on the Toolbar feedback talk page.

Wikimania

The Editing Team attended Wikimania 2019 in Sweden. They led a session on the mobile visual editor and a session on the new talk pages project. They tested two new features in the mobile visual editor with contributors. You can read more about what the team did and learned in the team's report on Wikimania 2019.

  • Talk Pages Project: The team is thinking about the first set of proposed changes. The team will be working with a few communities to pilot those changes. The best way to stay informed is by adding your username to the list on the project page: Getting involved.

There's so much significant stuff to be done on Wikipedia

I notice you have recently been making a number of edits to fix citations by inserting the definite article in front of newspaper names which formally start with the definite article. I suggest that this isn't a very useful activity, especially given that the number of signifcant things in need of fixing is so numerous.

In many contexts, ignoring or discarding a leading "article" is standard, so I suppose I'm arguing that both are acceptable. Admittedly, it's nice to have some sense of standardization. OTOH, English WP generally emphasizes consistency within an article rather than across WP.

Sure, making these changes is very easy, but there are also other costs associated with a change. In any case, I think everybody is better off if there are just left alone. Fabrickator (talk) 20:40, 21 December 2019 (UTC)

We have to rely on what we can find for sources. It's an ongoing process and I find errors in lots of sources that are considered reliable. I've corrected the NHL Guide, the Canadian Encyclopedia and other sources. For a lot of players such as Thibeault, that is career minor leaguers, they just fade away and it is difficult to get much information, without actually going to the town(s) they lived in or hoping they write a memoir or something. Sometimes the info comes out in reminiscences of other persons. I might be able to find info if you pass me some names. Alaney2k (talk) 19:12, 7 February 2020 (UTC)

Yes, that's why I'm trying to find obits or death notices for all deceased players because that's the only way to confirm this info and get it correct. Okay, let me give you three names I'm having trouble with: Roger Jenkins (died May 4, 1994), Rollie Paulhus (d. December 30, 1964), snd Bill Carse (d. October 31, 2000). I'd like to find out their city of death, but failing that where they are buried, the funeral home that handled their service, family members still alive, anything that might lead to corroborating those dates of death. Specifically, I wonder why you keep forcing a pov direction without once seeking consensus on the talk page. Your writing continually buries, dismisses, or even erases the strong impacts to others not personally involved in the protests as a result of the rail blockades. You have not once bothered to update layoffs directly related to pipeline protests, which now affect more than a thousand people. You keep deleting large sections of text as though there were only a single person in favour of the pipeline route, which we both know is not true, even among First Nations. Essentially, you are writing and acting as though your opinion were the only valid one ... even though it does not actually reflect the reality accurately.

You are also writing the article as a newspaper article rather than as an encyclopaedic article. The difference is the micro focus vs the macro focus and the stronger requirement for neutrality in an encyclopaedia. Please note that I am not saying that any given encyclopaedia is absolutely neutral, but they do at least try. Newspapers are much more aware of how to tightly frame information to support one side or another. The more micro the view, the easier it is to frame information to support a given ism. In writing an encyclopaedic article, we should be trying for neutrality, in part by using as broad a frame as possible.

I don't know if you are actively involved in the cause, but you should know that you are definitely coming across that way. As with you and your writing here, the question people are asking about the pipeline protests is whether anything other than a complete veto is acceptable to the protesters -- regardless of what others, including multiple other First Nations, consider best for their own communities. If it is veto or nothing, then how is that any better than the basis for the protests? You are certainly not helping the cause by rejecting the very consultation with involved others which the protests are claiming the right to on the national stage.

This would be where most WP members would start talking about taking a conflict to arbitration. I am not most members. Still, you of all people (as a "mithril-level grandmaster editor") should be aware that continually forcing edits without talk page consultation is against WP policy -- which was there before either you or I were members. (*laugh* Don't go solely by my current IP to guess how long I was around on WP, any more than we would go by the Indian Act to guess whether a given person validly identifies as native. Neither of us gets to claim sovereignty *here*.)

Rob Ford changes from 2013

I was reading Rob Ford page and found this in it: "It was during the 2001 budget deliberations that Ford made a reputation for passionate speeches. The City was facing a several hundred million budget shortfall, enough to require a 32% tax increase, after services were downloaded from the Government of Ontario."

The whole paragraph was inserted by you as a change and that was part of it. Because i don't know canadian politics, i wanted to question this before i make any changes. First: 32% tax increase sounds like a lot? Perhaps it was relative to the current tax percentage? Furthermore, english isn't my native language so "services were downloaded from the Government of Ontario" sounds off, is word downloaded used in that manner? I just don't understand the meaning at all, does it mean purchasing services from the government?

New York Times

I don't dispute the name of the publication, but your (automated?) changes have a negative impact on readability, particularly when they produce the phrase "a The." Wiki edits

So, I’m new to this, and I was wondering if I could have some help. It’s probably right under my nose but is there a list of rules or something I can read? I made an edit to an article but it got removed because it was over a word count I didn’t know existed. And, is there any way to extend that limit? @GodzillaExpert100: You are not the only one to struggle with the limit of 700 words. I have been in your position, going back and forth in editing. The standard is WP:FILMPLOT and it is firm. It's not that important to be very detailed in a plot. Try to keep that in mind. Don't let it discourage you, try to make it a writing challenge.
