Thank you for connecting to Wikidata and digging up another source on his year of death! I agree that 1794 is the verifiable date of death (printed in most sources), but I'm not sure it is true, so I'd rather keep that with a question mark. See this section. The source you gave mentions this as the original source, which says "At Edinburgh, Dr Charles Irving, late of Jamaica". This seems to be what everyone else has copied, and in conflict with other sources appearing earlier that treat him as dead. I'm not totally sure what to make of it, hence the question mark. Happy editing, —Kusma (t·c) 21:05, 7 May 2021 (UTC)

DYK for John Coster-Mullen
On 11 June 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article John Coster-Mullen, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that John Coster-Mullen discovered that the Little Boy was actually a girl? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/John Coster-Mullen. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, John Coster-Mullen), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Editing news 2021 #2

Earlier this year, the Editing team ran a large study of the Reply Tool. The main goal was to find out whether the Reply Tool helped newer editors communicate on wiki. The second goal was to see whether the comments that newer editors made using the tool needed to be reverted more frequently than comments newer editors made with the existing wikitext page editor.
The key results were:
- Newer editors who had automatic ("default on") access to the Reply tool were more likely to post a comment on a talk page.
- The comments that newer editors made with the Reply Tool were also less likely to be reverted than the comments that newer editors made with page editing.
These results give the Editing team confidence that the tool is helpful.
Looking ahead
The team is planning to make the Reply tool available to everyone as an opt-out preference in the coming months. This has already happened at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.
The next step is to resolve a technical challenge. Then, they will deploy the Reply tool first to the Wikipedias that participated in the study. After that, they will deploy it, in stages, to the other Wikipedias and all WMF-hosted wikis.
You can turn on "Discussion Tools" in Beta Features now. After you get the Reply tool, you can change your preferences at any time in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.

Hivernage

Hi Afernand74, just a note of thanks for your contributions to Hivernage. The camp at Courneau looks really interesting, have you thought about starting an article for it? - Dumelow (talk) 12:32, 27 September 2021 (UTC) |
@Dumelow: Thanks a lot for my first WikiChevrons :-) Creating a page of Courneau in EN wiki is certainly on my todo list. There are countless interesting FR pages and I don't have much spare time for creating pages from scratch. Would be easier to have the translation gadget available to speed up the creation of FR pages in EN wiki. One day may be. Afernand74 (talk) 15:12, 2 October 2021 (UTC)

DYK for Hivernage
On 8 October 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Hivernage, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that during the First World War, Senegalese Tirailleurs would be withdrawn from the Western Front to overwinter in camps in the south of France or northern Africa? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Hivernage. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Hivernage), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page.
