Eeek! They granted you adminship?!

Indeed they did. Not just on this Wikimedia Foundation project either, also on Wikimedia Commons and the English Wikinews. Adambro 22:31, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I've added more detail about the permission I recieved to upload the image. Please do not delete it again. Thanks --Almacel (talk) 14:21, 9 December 2007 (UTC)

Hey Adam. I noticed that there was a very (very very) long debate about the move of Sheffield Midland station to Sheffield station. I thought that Wikipedia usually used the common names for the articles. Since I don't know of anybody in Sheffield who calls it Sheffield Midland (the Supertram calls it Sheffield Station, the conductors on trains just call it Sheffield), wouldn't that be a good reason to call it just Sheffield station? The article can always include a history of what it was called before. ~~ [Jam][talk] 15:20, 9 December 2007 (UTC)

I've been bold and moved the article to Sheffield station with a link to Sheffield station (disambiguation) which provides links to the other stations which might be referred to as Sheffield. I think this set up better serves our readers, most of which are going to be interested in the present Sheffield station. Previous discussions of this move have been hampered by hysterical users who have been more interested in arguing than improving Wikipedia. I feel that in the current climate, where of the two users involved in conflict and most likely to get in the way of improving WP, one is banned from editing and the other is much less active. Regards. Adambro (talk)
Fair enough. Thanks for that. When I get chance, I'll clean up any left over double redirect links. ~~ [Jam][talk] 17:22, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
As far as I'm aware there aren't any double redirects left (redirect to a redirect) although there are links to redirects to this page and changing them is generally frowned upon as it unnecessary loads the servers. It's only double or more redirects that are a problem because they don't work. Adambro (talk) 17:25, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
Oh OK. I didn't know about that. Thanks for the heads up anyway :). ~~ [Jam][talk] 17:48, 9 December 2007 (UTC)

Word-for-word page copies

Hi Adam. I've just been browsing a few pages for some episodes of Spooks, and it appears that the plot summaries are just word-for-word copies of the pages on the BBC website. I've notified the original author of this, although it appears that they haven't been editing on Wikipedia in the last month. What should be done about these pages? In my opinion, they don't really add anything to Wikipedia so I think the List of Spooks episodes should just link to the external BBC website. ~~ [Jam][talk] 15:32, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

Any text which is simply copied from the BBC website should be removed as a copyright violation. If this forms the majority of an article then it should be tagged for speedy deletion with {{db-copyvio|url=sourceurl}} where sourceurl is the URL of the source. Adambro (talk) 15:52, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
That is fine - I'll go through and do that now. As I said, most of the article is just copied from the BBC site, with maybe one or two "trivial" points - most of those aren't cited either anyway! ~~ [Jam][talk] 16:14, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
Good work finding these. I've deleted the pages as copyright violations as appropriate. Regards. Adambro (talk) 17:06, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
Well, didn't so much "find" them really. Considering I'm an avid Spooks watcher, I knew about these pages. It was only recently when I looked at the content of them and noticed they were blatant copies that I decided they had to go. That and their "names", which are apparently official, I can find no reference for so will probably change them. ~~ [Jam][talk] 17:08, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

Please stop moving my images until you can get it right.

No, sorry you've misunderstood. Protection is most definitely not an endorsement of the current version, rather it is to prevent the continued unconstructive edit war which you were engaged in. It is as much to stop you being disruptive as it is anyone else. It is not normally considered necessary to highlight a page is protected when this is only for a relatively short period. I was just wondering why you took off the links that I posted on Weber State University's page for their different departments in the college of science. As you'll appreciate, the article appears to have been the subject of a reasonable amount of vandalism and so it is quite confusing to work out exactly what has been going on. However, I don't think I did removing the links that you added but if I did then I would apologise as this is probably a mistake on my part because I can't see anything in your contributions that would prompt me to revert the edit. It's a sandbox, so people are entitled to play with it. Yes, they should leave the header intact and only play underneath the line, but it's easy for a newbie to miss that message, so I don't think it's appropriate to give a vandalism warning; at most they should get a gentle reminder to please colour inside the lines, but even that's not really necessary, because no real harm is done by removing the header. -- Zsero (talk) 01:49, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

WSMR map and Grand Central map

A recent map i did on Wrexham & Shropshire turned out to be wrong geographically and so after a series of uploads and suggestions, it has changed course literally. The image was Image:WSMR route trial pic.png. The related conversations between be and RFBailey can be found at User talk:RFBailey and User talk:Simply south. Thinking about this, i am wondering whether i did the Grand Central map correctly and so i was thinking i should upload a new version at some point which is geographically more accurate. It is easy enough to do.

Should i upload it onto Wikipedia when i create then you move it to commons? Is it possible to move a newer version to commons? Simply south (talk) 21:31, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Heathrow T5 - reply

Thanks for your message, there were signs at the Heathrow Express side, at the entrance to the actual platforms, you know where the trolley barriers. It said "No bikes, no photography, no smoking". Look at your photo of the platform. See the sign on the very extreme right? That is for restrictions upon entering the Terminal itself (which, I noted with some bemusement, do not include photography!!). The sign I am talking about is on the opposite side of the glass wall.

Note that at Central station, the sign said "No flash photography"! And yet an employee told me off, back in January! Still I did manage to take some pics at the platform before she approached me. Anyway, you beat me to the relevant shot at T5!

As for the Tube side, I made a point of asking if I was allowed, as there were no signs. So the guy at the gate said OK, but he checked with the guy at the Info desk, he said no, but they allowed me to take the Roundel, which was the bare minimum I wanted! best, Sunil060902 (talk) 03:25, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

LM 170 image

Surely an image from YouTube is free? As well as this- it is a picture of a train. There are many like it! Why has it been removed from the page- it shows the livery better than the current one. Btline (talk) 20:07, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Images are unfree unless otherwise stated. By the very fact that you added this as fair use you're implying that you don't consider it to be free yourself anyway. There is no reason why an image of a train in these circumstances can possibly come under fair use. There is nothing preventing anyone from obtaining a free image or asking someone to release an image under a free licence.
Not sure what you mean by "As well as this- it is a picture of a train. There are many like it!", could you explain this please.
I have removed it from the page(s) because of my certainty that it will be deleted as a fair use image which could be perfectly feasibly replaced by a free image. With regards to your final point, as I said in one of my edit summaries, free images always take priority over unfree images regardless of if the free image is of a poorer quality. Adambro (talk) 20:53, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
How is the image not free? Why are the other train pictures allowed? Btline (talk) 21:06, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
What other train pictures? Adambro (talk) 21:09, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
Note that I have previously advised this user (under an old username) against using YouTube screenshots (see [2])--YouTube is a copyright minefield! --RFBailey (talk) 21:16, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
Yes- but I am not uploading an illegal feature film. I am taking a screen-shot of a picture of a 170, which someone has uploaded and released to the world. Nobody can make money out of it - even if they could, the original taker will not mind, as they put the photo on YouTube! I am even stating that it comes from that site- i.e. not by me! Emailing users gets no response- at least it did not when I asked last time! I still can't see what the problem is.

Going back to the subject in hand. If this image is a "copyvio" etc. etc. , then could I suggest that a replacement "free" / "fair use" / "copy free" picture be found somewhere. This is because the current one is ugly, and does not show the livery clearly. It is a shame I do not come across them (re-liveried 170s) - otherwise I would be tempted to take a snapshot.

But, please see - this is good faith, and I have stopped lifting copyrighted images from websites and magazines (the XC images). It is just I can't see what the problem with this image is!

Any advice would be helpful!

Regards, Btline (talk) 23:23, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

My advice would be simply, either make an opportunity for you yourself to obtain a photo, wait until someone else does, or keep contacting photographers on other websites who already have photos. Your likely to get a mixed response but I've had a number of successes which make all the effort worthwhile. It is important to note that all images are copyrighted unless otherwise stated.
We simply cannot use an unfree image under a claim of fair use because any such claim would be invalid because it would be perfectly feasible for someone to find or create a free alternative. It is not acceptable to suggest that simply because you can't easily get to where these trains run that an unfree image can be used. Ultimately, it is important to realise that there is no problem if we have to wait a week or a month until a free image can be added. The article in question has a freely licesned image, until such another free image comes along then there is nothing better regardless of quality, how much of the livery it shows, or whether you consider it to be "ugly".
With the change in a number of franchises, I've been looking to get some photos for Wikipedia myself. I visit London a few times a month and each time recently I've been sure to pass through Liverpool Street station when convenient on my visit, waiting for the opportunity to photograph the new National Express East Anglia livery. This opportunity finally came this last weekend after a number of attempts. Put some effort in, be patient, or simply forget about trying desperately to illustrate this article and find something you can more feasibly contribute to worry about. Adambro (talk) 05:47, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice - I understand all the above. The thing I am confused about is: why is the image from YouTube unfree? Btline (talk) 15:44, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Because there is no explicit statement that is is freely licensed. Adambro (talk)
Ok- I understand. Shame though..... Btline (talk) 17:58, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:StreetFlavorTheMixtapeVol1.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:21, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Cross project request

Hi, i was wondering if on this Wikinews item you could change the route map to the better version (from .JPG to .png) which i did just upload today. Thanks. Simply south (talk) 13:57, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Done although I'd suggest a better format would be SVG. Adambro (talk) 16:47, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
OK. How would i do it in .SVG? Simply south (talk) 21:44, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Late but not forgotten

Thanks for this. SWik78 (talk) 14:20, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks adambro for the advice on links e.t.c. I don't know when wikipedia upgraded you to an administrator, but it was a good job they did! Britishrailclass43 Britishrailclass43 (talk) 18:27, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Okay cheers, no worries. I've been an admin on this project since April 2007. Adambro (talk) 18:28, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

InterCity 250

Hi there, I was hoping you would delete the Intercity 250 taskforce and talk pages. As seen as I created them, I took all the content from them. I just need you to delete them as they served no purpose. Thanks Britishrailclass43 (talk) 21:18, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Done. Adambro (talk) 21:27, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Wikibreak

Your userpage states that you are currently on a wikibreak, however you have obviously been active considering you put a messsage on my talk page today. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Britishrailclass43 (talkcontribs) 13:28, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Obviously, I am slowly reducing my level of contributions as my workload increases. Adambro (talk) 14:03, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

RC

What happened to RC? With not been on wikipedia before March this year, I do not know what happened to him. Please reply as I am eager to know. Thanks Britishrailclass43 (talk) 13:32, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

How do you know RC if you don't mind me asking. See [3] for what happened to him. Adambro (talk) 14:07, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

RC Again

I just found out about him through your talk page. I visited his user page which was strangely empty and started to worry a bit so I contacted you to make sure he was OK. But sadly it was the worst case scenario when I found out. Condolences to his family. Britishrailclass43 (talk) 14:22, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

User:RC is not the person I thought you were referring to. I know of nothing to suggest that the person who I've told you has died is this user, actually it appears to be the opposite. Regards. Adambro (talk) 14:41, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
Sounds a bit like crossed wires to me. ~~ [Jam][talk] 15:16, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Infobox Image Changes

Hi there, of course there is a reason. I have noticed that most of the images seem to have been in the infoboxes for a long time. I think it is only right that our visitors should get a different picture when they visit the pages every now and again. I hope you understand this. Thanks Britishrailclass91 (talk) 20:04, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Replied on the user's talk page. Adambro (talk) 20:08, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

I don't think that I am changing images for the sake of it, but rather to give a wider view of the pictures available in the commons. Britishrailclass91 (talk) 20:12, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi,In future, I will try to replace good images with images that are just as good, or of higher quality so that it is a positive change. Thanks Britishrailclass91 (talk) 07:13, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

ANI discussion

Just to let you know, there's a discussion at ANI involving you here. Equazcion /C 01:09, 15 Apr 2008 (UTC)

Jenna Syken

Dear Adambro,

I am very happy that I am able to communicate with someone about what is going on about Jenna Syken and the Wikipedia page about her. Jenna is our daughter who figure skates for Israel and I keep going onto her page deleting the incorrect information and lies that are constantly being written about her and replacing it with the correct information.

I have gotten to the point that I just now delete everything and post the internet website urls to Jenna Sykens at: The Israel Ice Skating Federation: http://iisf.org.il/html/skaters/skaters_Jenna_Syken.html and also to: Jenna Rachel Syken Official Website: http://www.jennasyken.com/

If you would like something written about Jenna Syken with her accurate and truthful figure skating history and have it publicly posted I will do it. If not then just leave her name Jenna Syken and under it the 2 links to the:

IISF website and Jenna Syken Official Website

The people who write about Jenna on Wikipedia have an alternative reason for doing what they have been doing which is not uncommon in this sport of figure skating. Many people still cannot accept the fact that Jennas' older sister Shayna is the 1998 Junior Olympic Champion of the United States, even though it is in the USFSA record books and engraved on the Junior Olympic Trophy at the US Olympic Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Jenna might also be the youngest in USFSA history to have passed all 3 USFSA Dance tests at age 4 1/2 on her first try. We are researching that now with the USFSA to see if she holds that honor and distinction, it would be a record for that also.

I would appreciate it if you would get back to me about this. Please go to http://www.jennasyken.com/ scroll down and sign into the guestbook on the links page and leave a message for me there and I will get back to you. Thank you very much, Mrs. Naomi Syken —Preceding unsigned comment added by 167.112.160.33 (talk) 01:37, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

AC Loco Group

Are you by any chance a member of the AC locomotive group. I ask this, because I have looked through your files of images, and there are an awful lot of pictures of the Hull Trains class 86 train. Thanks Britishrailclass91 (talk) 07:32, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

RE:Adminship

Ok then, what should I do, should I create another account and start again or just archive my history?? Surfer-boy94 (talk) 23:58, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

RE:Adminship

Thanks, I thought that too, but I am going to build up much more stuff before I apply for andminship. Thank You for your help. Surfer-boy94 (talk) 10:38, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

PA

User British Rail Class 91 (or something like that) has been making PAs on my talk page. Btline (talk) 17:54, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

I thought it was norm to announce such blocks- sorry. I won't do this in the future. Excellent about the block though! Btline (talk) 19:37, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
Blocks are not something to celebrate, it is unfortunate when we have to impose them. I wouldn't say it was excellent that this user is blocked, I'd say it's a great shame that we had to come to this but ultimately this block will serve to protect the Wiki from disruption so was necessary. Thank you for having found a free image of the Paris banner for the 2008 Summer Olympics torch relay article. Well done! Aridd (talk) 23:50, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Block on wikipedia and commons

Could I please ask you to lift the block on wikimedia commons for me. This is because I do not know what came over me and would like to upload photo's to redeem myself. Also, have I redeemed myself for the harrassment on other users? (I did not realise that I was harrassing them or should have replied on the RfA page. I was just angry that people had been keeping their comments about me close to their chest as such. I'm sure I would have reacted in a more responsible way if I had been notified about what other users think of me before the RfA. Also, I would like to apologise completely for the harrassment of other users. I would also like to set things right with these users. Thanks and regardsBritishrailclass91 (talk) 15:47, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Hello, I have been accused of sockpuppetry because of my friends and families inexperienced edits to wikipedia on the same computer. What should I do? Thanks. Surfer-boy94 (talk) 08:06, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Hull Trains Class 86

Hi there Just thought I'd better let you know that I am about to put the Hull Trains Class 86 into the past fleet area and the Adelante's in the current fleet section and delete the future fleet section. This is because the AC Loco group states that the class 86 would have a final, final weekend. However, this was dated 17th of April 2008 and nothing else has been heard. I hope you understand this and no-one reverts my change. Thanks and Regards Britishrailclass91 (talk) 10:46, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Help!

I seem to have made a complete mess of the Hull Trains article while trying to change the tables, please revert this! Britishrailclass91 (talk) 10:52, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

UPDATE: Thanks for reverting the change, I have no idea how it happened! Britishrailclass91 (talk) 16:41, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Some robot is pestering me about images which were taken out of commission a while back. I requested for them to be deleted, but this bot ignores this, and leaves message after message on my user page. Please can you delete NXEAlogo.png and any others which may have been taken out of use.

Regards, Btline (talk) 18:21, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
