In general, the TMTF would be considered a primary source, and as such wouldn't be allowable, as encyclopedias use secondary and tertiary sources: i.e., we aren't a publisher of original research. However, the newspapers certainly are acceptable sources, as is the TV station, provided you can reference it to date, title, etc.: it doesn't have to be available on the Web. If you have clippings, that would be enough, as long as you can credit the newspaper to date, writer and title. I'm somehwat skeptical about the gang's notability, but if they've been the subject of significant criminal investigation in a city the size of Memphis, I think that's probably good enough (well, not good, but you know what I mean). In general, I think that mugshots would run afoul of our notability policies and biographies of living persons policies. Unless the person's made the national news, I'd suggest that mugshots are inappropriate. Also, any images posted to Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons would be freely licensed, which I doubt would comply with Tennessee or Shelby County policies or Wikipedia's, since you personally don't own a copyright on the images (the county/city/state does), and they aren't yours (personally) to post for unrestricted use by anyone for any reason. Go ahead and edit, learn how to improve articles, participate in the community, and accumulate experience, so that after a while and a few thousand edits, you can make a request for administratorship. Administrators are volunteers: read WP:ADMIN for details. Being an admin is mostly boring work, keeping the wiki swept out, and occasionally it's pretty dreary. Thank you for taking care of several CSD's that had been sitting in wait. I am considering putting in an RfA, but it would look better if I can find someone to endorse/nominate me. Deletion and my recreation of Gillian filan

While I was browsing the CSD category I came across this article. While I agree that she's not notable enough for her own article I thought that the fact that someone had created the article meant that it was probably a viable search term so was in the middle of redirecting to her husbands page, where she is mentioned, when you deleted the page. I deleted the article because it made no assertion of significance and consisted almost entirely of links back to the company: in other words, it looked a lot like spam. I have no objection to its re-creation, provided documentation is provided of its notability in non-trivial references in independent media. You were the editor who added it to the list of HTML editors, so your argument that "it's on the list" is invalid. Not every HTML editor is necessarily eligible for inclusion. Deletion of Levels of Awesome

Hello Kind Sir,

I am curious as to why my Levels of Awesome entry was flagged as G3:Vandalism and deleted from Wikipedia. I fail to understand how my entry includes blatant or obvious misinformation. There are levels of awesomeness and anyone that has watched the television show on CBS "How I Met Your Mother" can attest to this fact based upon the repeated wisdom of Barny Stinson as played by Neil Patrick Harris (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barney_Stinson#Catchphrases).

I will grant you that I cannot 100% verify the capacity of bears to recognize rawksomeness, but then again, Wikipedia's entry on Human-Bear interactions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bears#Relationship_with_humans) is not very thorough and therefore does not disprove nor dispel the idea that bears cannot. (I would certainly contend that a certain, smarter-than-your-average bear would have the ability to communicate with humans, but his ability to recognize rawksome would still be questionable [1].)

So, besides the potentially unsupportable hypothesis about bears' speech capacity, which can easily be removed, I do not believe my entry so flagrantly violates Wikipedia's standards as claimed.

Could you please reinstate my entry, or at least produce for me peer-reviewed studies that show my entry to contain other erroneous (blatant and/or obvious) information?

See WP:WEB for notability criteria for web content. You'll need to find coverage by independent media of some significant standing, apart from Wired, obviously, that indicates that the blog has received notice in the wider media. Can you document those awards? Also, it's best to use a sandbox, like User:Batman88/sandbox to construct the article before putting it out in article space. Fuel TV sysop unprotection request

I filed a report on WP:RFPP but they said contact you directly. Please remove the sysop protection on Fuel TV. The content dispute and flame war were both resolved. I see no need for the sysop any longer. Part of my early unblock was I promised to stay away from it for a few weeks until it cools down, and I will. He was responsible for the terrible state of Manu Sharma fairly recently, and was happy to edit war to keep his preferred version (BLP-vios, serious POV issues, copyright violations etc) and is now back to editing the article, complete with legalese, a self-professed conflict of interest and refusal to cite sources. I've warned him for 3RR and pointed him to various policies, but I really don't want this. I think the article should have been deleted a long time ago, and the last thing I want to do is block/protect/delete myself. Long story short- could you do something about this, if need be? He can't say he wasn't warned, and I was sitting on it waiting for 4RR. I can see that there's a lengthy history of blocking which gives me little faith that matters will improve. You were correct to avoid use of admin tools in this matter, although the copyvio+personal opinion+BLP stuff gives you a pass on the reverts in my opinion. I understand, but I am concerned about the apparent fact the the editor was, in fact, correct on the BLP issue. I was concerned about that at the time, and didn't pursue my own inquiry - shame on me. On the other points, the editor's attitudes toward copyright, civility and edit-warring are self-evident. There's no cost to unblock, and if the editor shows a willingness to do as I asked, to use the talk page and appropriate edit summaries, then fine. Why was the Aine O'reilly article deleted?

Proposal to add new content to WTC7

I propose to add details from the new NIST report. There, the collapse is described in three phases: (Cite page 87)

• In Stage 1, the descent was slow and the acceleration was less than that of gravity. (until t=1.75s)
• In Stage 2, the north face descended at gravitational accelaration (between t=1.75s and t=4.0s)
• In Stage 3, the acceleration decreased somewhat as the upper portion of the north face encountered increased resistance from the collapsed structure and the debris pile below. (between t=4.0s and t=5.4s)

Also Fig.3-15 of pdf page 88 should be included in the article for a better understanding. As far as is saw is the new report not yet included in the articles references.

These things take some time to develop unless it's a highly-trafficked article. I have taken no significant role in editing that article, apart from dealing with vandalism or poorly-considered/undiscussed edits. Since it's a wiki, there's no "editor in charge" for any of the 2.8 million articles here. You must convince the community at large that your edits are worthwhile. Most of the time that's not hard, but as WTC 7 is a featured article, editors will demand more, especially since it's in the 9/11-related category and attracts some interesting ideas. Plagiarism question

Hey Acroterion, you know your way around Wikipedia better than I. I found an article whose lead paragraph is directly taken from a copyrighted work without attribution. I think your simplest option is to post about it at Wikipedia:Copyright problems, and others will address it. If you want to go further, you can yourself tag the article with {{copyvio}}, which is more extreme, as it blanks the article. There are more instructions about notifications and listing on a central work-page you should follow, too, at wp:copyvio. There certainly is a centralized process to handle these. You can contribute the info that there appears to be a problem, but you don't need to take on the entire solution by yourself. Hope this helps. doncram (talk) 21:47, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

Good morning. I apologize again. I truly am not trying to create an advertisement - I added my external links in a way to show allowable use of similar information. I thought this was needed for reference. I would be glad to remove them, but could use your help to understand how not to get flagged with copyright violations - perhaps the copyright notice without links to the site are enough?

I am simply trying to create a real connection between Brian Olsen and Denny Dent on wikipedia. Many other artists are trying to draw a connection between themselves and Denny and Brian is the only person whom Denny ever worked with.

Help changing the source on an uploaded photo?

Hey Acroterion, you know most things wiki... A photo I uploaded last year has been tagged as unsourced. It appears on the article USS Sangay (AE-10), and the photo is the ship's motto Sangay.jpg. I think I incorrectly attributed the source of the image as "self" because I took the photo, when it really is a derivative photo of a work of the US Government (Navy to be specific). My question is this: is it possible to edit the source and copyright information on an already-uploaded photo, or is the best way to make a change to simply upload the photo again with the correct information. I believe the image is free to use as a government work product and I think it adds to the ship's article and would like to keep it if possible. What's you're advice? If "by most things wiki", you mean 51% of what I ought to know, you're in the ballpark, but this is actually in my area. Yes, you can always change the license/attribution. You ought to back it up with a correct source URL if you can find one. It certainly is a charming illustration, and since the original picture was done on Government time, as was, presumably the original photograph, I think you're safe. You took a picture of a picture? You should probably describe it in the comment field. You should be reasonably satisfied that the picture whose picture you took is, in fact, public domain, and substantiate it. What else are you looking for exactly? I researched all that I could before making my first article and I wanted to make it about a website that I have been frequenting over the years and have really enjoyed. The site is huge and consists of two duplicate sites which are merging together (www.vidberry.com)(www.animecrusade.com) as redirects to a new domain name (www.animetubez.com). I figured I would try to be the first person to post an article about it.

User names and history can't be "erased." They are permanent. You were indefinitely blocked, and you may not edit, with a username or an IP. You may request an unblock on your named account, but in doing so you must acknowledge the behavior that led to the block and undertake to edit productively. The talk page is supposed to be strictly for the improvement of the related article, not for general commentary on the subject. That's not to say that people strictly observe it, but we try to keep it under control. I deal with a lot on 9/11-related issues, so my patience with those who see a conspiracy around every corner is a bit limited, for my own part.

Formatting references is one of the hardest and most arcane aspects of Wikipedia, and I wish I was better at it. In-line refs are best, once you've got the reflist tag. There are scripts that can help. Unless you used every one of those refs, you might want to prune them down a bit. Take a look at an article I made yesterday - National Harbor of Refuge and Delaware Breakwater Harbor Historic District - you'll see how I used named references with the full cite the first time and the subsequent cites just use the name with a / at the end.

We see promotion of free things all the time. Money does not make advertising, promotion does. You even include a download link: Wikipedia is not a place to promote your mod. Also, Wikipedia is not a game guide. A plain, factual account of the mod (assuming it meets Wikipedia's notability criteria and is, as you say, significant) is welcome, but please condense and avoid the use of the first and second persons, and all promotion. Hi there. I have been trying for quite a while to create a page of my friend whose name is David McArdle. I got his permission so how come I am not aloud to make the page? Hannah Montana cast pictures

Why were these three images deleted?

1. "File:Miley Stewart.jpg"
2. "File:Oliver Oken promotional.jpg"
3. "File:Jackson Stewart.jpg"

You cited deletion rules 6 and 7 and none of these images violated either of those rules. They all had the proper tags for their fair-use and they all had rationale, unless of course someone else altered them from how I uploaded them.

Furthermore, rule 7 says imediate deletion applies to photographs with a logo tag, which was not the case here.

Help me out please? Thank you!

I am, however, doubtful that the images meet fair-use standards. Generally, high-quality professional photographs are not suitable for fair use, and if a free substitute exists (however crappy), they should not be used at all. I believe you're leaning too heavily on the "charcter depiction" justification and using images that are larger than necessary. Acroterion _(talk) 03:10, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

I've been curious about that. Is it necessary that fair-use images only be lower resolution from the originals, even if the originals were stunning quality? A fine image could be slightly lower resolution from the original and still look pretty great and technically be considered "low resolution."

With these images I have seen higher quality copies, so I am certain they meet the standards if that is the criteria. But is it also necessary for them to be "low quality" as well as low resolution? (However that should be defined.)

For myself, I used other images as guidelines. For example, the fair-use image used on the Liz Lemon article is the same size and quality and has been used for over two years. So I had thought these images were pretty safe.

The thing I notice about the Liz Lemon image is that the source is no bigger than the image as used; i.e., no bigger than it absolutely has to be to be used in the article. Your images seem to be larger than the end use on the page. I don't think "low quality" should be a goal, just low resolution. For my part, yes. I've avoided fair use, as you can tell, and this only comes up because the user I was dealing with made no effort at all to comply with fair use. "Public Domain" on National Register of Historic Places link

Thanks again for giving me that cool NRHP link for the Woolworth article. On that page before the pictures it says the following: "Publisher: National Park Service, Published: 01/02/1987, Access: Public access, Restrictions: Public domain". (I can't give you a link to that page but you can see it if you go to the search page and choose "Woolworth" in Delaware.) Actually NO, i think not. Coming in from elsewhere, I don't know exactly what link you're referring to, but I believe it is an incorrect database display of that message in the NPS Focus system. It is incorrect and I do not believe that the National Park System's error in their database puts the photos into the public domain. The Focus system holds many photos that the NPS does not have copyright for, so its incorrect label cannot change the copyright status of the photos. doncram (talk) 11:19, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

NPS photos

Hi, it's nice to see you've been developing Wyoming NRHP articles. However, I'm not clear on whether the pic used at U.S. Post Office (Douglas, Wyoming) which you uploaded from the NPS Focus system, and then perhaps other pics, is actually public domain and available for us to use. I see that you meticulously credited very specifically to a H. M. Kilva, and that is properly represented, but is it public domain? I have kept some notes at Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places#some but not all National Park Service photos are public domain. It would perhaps be public domain if it were not credited to any specific photographer or organization that could hold copyright. It could also be public domain if H.M. Kilva was then a Federal employee. But there are many photos in the NPS Focus system that are not PD, which the NPS is clear enough about in its general copyright statement, explaining that it uses photos itself with permission. For this one, i wonder if you need to get an OTRS release from the NPS, perhaps specifically from the NPS Western Region HQ, which could possibly speak for Kilva. I've asked the Park Service exactly that question. - whether it's a default public domain notice in their database, or whether upon assimilating it into the database they consider it PD (per the second part of their disclaimer). We had originally thought this default would be appropriate for photographs but have since found out it is apparently the responsibility of the user to verify whether or not a photograph is in the public domain before using it. Attack pages

Hi... this is just a casual note, a talking point rather than a criticism. I noticed you deleted as an attack page an article I'd tagged as an A7. The page consisted solely of the claim that its subject was the gay lover of someone else. I just wanted to make the point that if we delete articles like this as attacks we seem to be agreeing that it's necessarily a horrible slur to be described as gay, which I don't think is our intention. I absolutely agree that the article creator's intention was to attack the subject, but it sort of makes me uncomfortable when we seem to agree that ugh, gay, what a horrid thing to say about somebody. I tag them by the author's apparent intention. I agree with your sentiment in principle, but most of the gay and lesbian editors I've corresponded with tend to take the position that it's one thing to use various terms within the LGBT community (or to self-describe) and quite another for someone else to do so. In this case, it's probably a 14 year old male in the throes of the usual identity insecurity. I'm not consistent, I'll admit, but as it was intended as an attack, I tagged it as such. Cuss words

I am protesting your deletion of the list of cuss words article and the category:cuss words as unformal deletions. They should have been deleted through at least a formal process, rather than just deleting it right away. If whatever i said is "not the encyclopedia's concern", then why delete it unformally?. It may be almost a month late to act, but i finally decided to. Why were they deleted the way that they were instead of having a formal discussion? Why? Isn't the world cruel enough? It was deleted because it duplicated pre-existing content on profanity, and appeared to be a random, contextlesss list of American profanity. As such, it was speedily deletable. I suggest you re-create the article (this time with some context concerning why this particular list is useful and distinct from "profanity") and we can see where it leads. If you can't see that he was being satirical then you are, as a matter of fact, completely clueless... the 'snack crackers called Goldfish' are obviously not modeled after the lowercase letter alpha. Wikipedia formatting language?

Hey Acroterion, I thought I would spiff up my user page so I copied some of the formatting from your user page on to mine, (without copying over your material, so don't worry). As I looked at it, though, I thought I would like to tweak it a bit. My question is this - what language does wikipedia use for formatting and is there a SIMPLE book for learning some of it? I'm not talking about article issues, such as references and citations, I'm talking about making the user page look really nice. I have Wikipedia - The Missing Manual, but don't think there is a section on this topic in there. Thoughts? pmcyclist (talk) 18:21, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

You've asked the wrong person, and maybe chosen the wrong page. My page displays all sorts of ways depending on the screen size and shape, and is effectively unplanned and accidental. You're, of course, free to use it, but the formatting's an embarrassment to Wikipedia, principally because I am not competent in that area. I'm not sure who to recommend that would be able to help - a lot of the people with nice pages borrowed them from others. Please review Wikipedia's requirements for the notability of individuals; the article was deleted because it doesn't comply with notability requirements (which are also mentioned in WP:YFA. We appreciate your enthusiasm and encourage you to contribute, but an article on you and your best friend isn't really appropriate. Biographies are about people who have been covered in the newspaper or historical works. Is there a subject you're interested in where you could help us improve existing content? Thank you! We were driving across northern Wyoming a couple of years ago and were stopped cold by this big turquoise thing on an otherwise deserted Main Street. I'd really like to see the interior, or the outside with the lights turned on, but I settled for taking lots of pictures of it as it was. Can I ask what the "OTRS resolution" you discussed with Mamta dhody (talk · contribs) that you refer to in your unblock message actually was? He's back to his usual tricks- edit warring, uploading copyvios, ranting about Islam/US presidents/Jews/Jesus (or whatever strikes his fancy) and being generally insulting- all that having made only around thirty edits since the unblock. I was taking Georgewilliamherbert's OTRS discussion as the basis for the unblock. Since I don't have OTRS access, I don't know what was discussed or what terms might exist, but they're certainly contingent on good behavior in general; GWH's comments mainly dealt with the article and the veracity of the edits, not editor behavior. The company does not meet Wikipedia's guidelines for the notability of corporations. Wikipedia requires that articles on companies show evidence that the company is eligible for inclusion by virtue of having received multiple, non-trivial mentions in independent media known for fact-checking, and that this coverage should preferably indicate notability of more than purely local standing. This keeps Wikipedia from being flooded by companies and organizations that simply want to appear on a highly-trafficked website that tends to appear at the top of Google search lists. Since Wikipedia is not a business directory or a free webhost, this allows Wikipedia to focus on its core purpose, writing an encyclopedia, which is a task requiring some discrimination in content. I do not see the end result changing - you aren't doing anything wrong, the company, like many, just doesn't meet the inclusion criteria. Deleting Pages

My partner and I have been living apart for almost 6 months now. we see each other one a month is we're lucky. As a really cute gesture and to try really hard keeping the spark alive, my partner wrote a wiki page about me. AND U DELETED BEFORE I EVEN GOT TO SEE IT. I don't suppose however you would know what that is like. Someone that sits there and sifts through people pages.....can't exactly be the brightest soul.

As a female I need a little bit of romanticism to survive a long distance relationship. Women out there would be frothing to get there hands on a boy that did this for them and I'm a lucky one and you ruin his one shot at really trying.

To delete the website that fast........well actually I don't need to say anymore do I.

I think the general public doesn't know much about Uncyclopedia or Dramatica, they're specialized sites known about primarily by their members and active users of Wikis. Wikipedia on the other hand, has been commonly mentioned in popular media, and is much more well known by the public.
