Ai4ijoel (talk) 23:46, 22 August 2015 (UTC) I added the "open parentheses" because there was a "close parentheses" after his year of birth.
- There also was an opening parenthesis before the IPA pronunciation guide. Stevietheman thus removed the parenthesis you added, fixing the issue. Huon (talk) 09:21, 23 August 2015 (UTC)

html markup was ignored by BracketBot when it was in a citation template.
74.136.159.171 (talk) 02:56, 23 August 2015 (UTC)
- The source of the notification isn't really that BracketBot didn't recognize some of the markup, but that the quote which you gave within the citation contains mismatched brackets, with two closing square brackets and only one opening square bracket. The bot cannot tell that's deliberate. Huon (talk) 09:21, 23 August 2015 (UTC)
- What markup or template, if any? can be used so that BracketBot will ignore deliberate open brackets. 74.136.159.171 (talk) 20:45, 23 August 2015 (UTC)

- Nyttend Technically, the table didn't have unpaired brackets. The line just above your addition of

I don't think BracketBot detects table problems, just brackets. AWB will also not see that as an error. There are a couple of other cases that technically are not broken brackets, but the table is broken anyway. For example, tables that end in|-}
or a line just containing}

Comment/question: I fixed the missing right paren. But I wanted to make it a better reference, by putting it into the refrence section. Bout that does not allow two publishers.
The original was published by MacMillan, around 1866, but just now (17 Auig 2015) has again become avilable as a reprint from the Iniversity of Michigan, It is the source of much of the inforamtion cited by the other major refrence in that section, Fischer. I'd like both publishers to show, just out of fairness. How can that be done? GioCM (talk) 00:48, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
- GioCM Books can be from a multitude of publishers, think of how many publishers have put out Charles Dickens or Mark Twain books. Therefore, you use the publisher of the book that you are referencing. Every book can be different, amount of pages for example. If you refer to page 100 in one book, it might be on page 120 in another. Bgwhite (talk) 05:09, 24 August 2015 (UTC)

Since the URL itself included an equality sign, the citation template interpreted the part of the URL before that equality sign as a parameter name (which it then didn't recognize) and the part after the equality sign as the value of that parameter. (If you had omitted the "url=" and the URL hadn't included an equality sign, the citation template still wouldn't have recognized that the parameter was supposed to be the URL, but the error message may have been a little more helpful.) Hi.
- Could be that I fixed the trouble, however the bot does not provide as much identifying information as it could about the reference that raised the alert. In my case, I had just finished correcting many bad references and citations on a single page, so it would have been useful for me to have included in the alert, say, a paste of the <ref> ... </ref> snippet that caused the error.
- So I made what I think is the fix, and I would like to verify it by running the bot myself on that particular page. Is that possible? If it is possible, let me suggest to include instructions either in the alert posted to an editor's talk page, or on the bot's page. The (maybe obvious) advantages of this are that it saves editors' time, and avoids readers being confronted with a bad reference.

- @Corkythehornetfan: The errors ReferenceBot points out are marked in red in the article proper. In this case, the error is Text "By MIKE PRESTON " ignored, affecting footnote 13. Fixed now. Due to the rather wide-ranging nature of the errors ReferenceBot notifies about, and due to the method of error detection which I presume makes use of Category:Pages with citations using unnamed parameters and the like, highlighting the error on the notified user's talk page in addition to the article itself would unfortunately be rather difficult. Comment/question: Hi, probably a difficult case to detect for a bot, but I thought I'd let you know that this notification was a false positive. Neither did I add those "greater than" signs (originally, that is), nor were they incorrect. Hope it helps, Matthiaspaul (talk) 14:26, 30 November 2015 (UTC)
- That's a known issue. The bot keeps an eye on "less than" and "greater than" signs because they're used for HTML and <ref> tags where a mismatch can have rather severe consequences. It's not smart enough to distinguish between those uses and use as "greater than", so the latter will lead to false positives. You did add some instances of

Comment/question: There was an error but not the reported error. I have left behind a <references/> test tag while editing a section. The report said it "caused a broken reference name". If you can perfect that, great; if not, it is still useful; and if I got it wrong, forgive me. One further note: please, please, please, do no write bot messages as if they are people. That is instead of "Hello, I'm ReferenceBot. I have automatically detected [...] you can report it to my operator". I would much rather read a true message, instead of a fake-friendly one, e.g "Hello. ReferenceBot automatically detected [...] you can report it to the bot author". Some day robots may be a self, but not now, this is just a relatively simple script. Anyway, thanks, it helped.
Nabla (talk) 14:13, 13 December 2015 (UTC)
- @Nabla: While the bot's description of the problem may not be the most helpful, it's correct; if you check the reference list at the bottom of the article you will see the "broken reference name" errors. Since those error messages are what prompt the bot to act, deviating from them would be very difficult. Huon (talk) 21:17, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

Turningwoodintomarble (talk) 21:24, 29 December 2015 (UTC)
- @Turningwoodintomarble: Thank you for fixing that. By "page of the image file" you mean a specific page of a PDF? I'm not aware of such a functionality of thumbnails; do you know of an example, or of documentation you could provide a link to? Otherwise the {{Multiple image}} template's parameters seem to cover all options available for "regular" images, including setting specific link targets (or none) if the images are clicked. - @Microsoftguru1: BracketBot is not concerned with the quality of references, and since it's an automated program it neither reads nor understands them. It only notifies users about mismatched brackets such as the one you added to the Economy of Bangladesh article where the link to the Electricity sector in Bangladesh you added to the "external links" section was missing one of the closing square brackets and thus didn't work. The dates on Hanks' wiki do not coincide with those of the wiki Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival which moved from Lakewood to its current downtown Cleveland location. Hanks performed at the GLSF from 1977-79 when the Festival was located in Lakewood. I saw him perform in Lakewood. Lakewood is a Cleveland suburb. Indicating he performed in "Cleveland" is a generic reference, much like residents of Hollywood often refer to themselves as living in L.A. f Comment/question:

Mabelina (talk) 06:12, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
- You realise this is the talk page of an automated bot, right? Yes, it will be monitored by the person who devised/runs the bot to pick up queries about its functioning, but it's hardly the place to ask for substantive advice on completely unrelated matters. N-HH talk/edits 12:00, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
- @N-HH: I have no idea why you have popped up here - but since you have deigned to ask - yes, I do realise & my point was directed to User:A930913 who may or may not choose to answer in due course. Since YOU are here, when are you going to answer MY question? M Mabelina (talk) 13:23, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
- Because I saw you had posted here, using a template for reporting bot problems, about an issue you have with another user and thought it might help if it was pointed out that this user's account seems to mainly used for dealing with bots they run. And that they have only made one edit themselves in the past 12 months. As you say, maybe you will get a reply, but it seems an odd way of going about getting help. - Good but you were the one who decided to enter into this territory - my point was something else here. M Mabelina (talk) 15:01, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
- @Mabelina: Unfortunately A930913 is extremely unlikely to respond to queries such as yours, nor am I aware of A930913 having been active in dispute resolution even when they were much more active on Wikipedia than they are nowadays. You were already pointed towards WP:Dispute resolution; that's a much better venue for this issue than an almost-inactive individual editor's talk page. Personally I don't think Miesianiacal's conduct towards you is sanctionable, and I'd advise you to focus on content, not on editor behaviour. Huon (talk) 20:32, 9 January 2016 (UTC)

@A930913: BracketBot is not including a New Section header so its Notices are inappropriately being put "in stream" into the last discussion on the page. I manually fixed the problem for the above diff (see the next edit in the history) by using the bot's Edit Summary text for the ==Section Title== but I think you should fix this in the bot right away.
Koala Tea Of Mercy (KTOM's Articulations & Invigilations) 14:38, 29 February 2016 (UTC)
- That's deliberate. The bot adds its comments to the "Month Year" section if available or creates a new one if necessary. It's possible for editors to tell the bot to create daily section headings on their talk pages instead of using monthly ones. Huon (talk) 02:11, 3 March 2016 (UTC)
- @A930913: I see that now. The problem apparently was caused because user JJMC89 used the same section "Month Year" naming convention to post a warning template that resulted in a subsequent active discussion. JJMC89 probably should have used the involved article name for the section name instead. When your bot added its message without any kind of separator it became lost in the stream of talk text.
- I know you can't help what other users do but I wonder if it wouldn't be a good idea for your bot (and probably any other bots that use the same approach) to precede their post with a simple horizontal bar (----) if they are not creating the "Month Year" section? Four characters seems a small price to improve readability. Koala Tea Of Mercy (KTOM's Articulations & Invigilations) 07:03, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
- The warning was posted with WP:Twinkle, which doesn't allow for choosing a section name; it uses month year for the name. — JJMC89 (T·C) 07:17, 7 March 2016 (UTC)

If you saw a notification somewhere else, I'd need a link or the title of the page to take a look. If it was at some IP talk page, then possibly it was a shared IP and someone else edited from that IP to make the changes mentioned in the bot's notification. Huon (talk) 04:27, 3 March 2016 (UTC)

(Semi-) False positive:
- I did not forget a (round) parenthesis. You can see that my edit wasn't event close to that part of the article. That was an older edit, done by someone else. So it is a CORRECT identification, but FALSE positive that it is MY edit's fault.
- My edit used angle brackets, but in the role of arrows, so I understand your algorithm, but this time it is not the case of brackets (I don't think changes are needed here).
VirtuOZ (talk) 18:54, 4 March 2016 (UTC)
- The bot notified you because of the mismatched angled brackets, but it lists all unpaired brackets. Firstly it's sometimes difficult for the bot to determine which mismatch exactly an edit caused, and secondly, editors may want to improve the article beyond just fixing their own mistakes.
- You're right, the angled brackets are indeed a false positive. The bot keeps an eye on them because of their use in HTML tags or <ref> tags, where a mismatch can have severe consequences. Huon (talk) 19:30, 7 March 2016 (UTC)

I wonder if is possible include in the Wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curvilinear_perspective) some images taken from my book, insert a ISBN code for my book and a link to the tutorial.
If possible I'd like insert some examples and a chart with different types of curvilinear perspective.
This is not a commercial link because is normal to include a isbn to a book to learn more about a specific argument, Even in this page, about curvilinear perspective, there is a isbn to the book of Albert Flocon and André Barre.
