What is an official language?

Your logic in this edit is in error, although it's an understandable error. You say, "American" is not a language, "English" is. And of course, you are correct. But that is not the point. The box indicates what the official language is. And many years ago, the Illinois General Assembly did indeed pass a bill designating American as the official language of our state. Were they linguistically correct to do so? Of course not. But it doesn't matter; if they say the official language of the state is "Muppet", and the governor signs it, then Muppet is the official language, period.

Having said that, I won't be reverting your edit. Why? Because the law designating American as the official language has since been repealed. So you did the right thing, even if you did so in ignorance. My purpose with this post is just to expand your thinking a bit. See you around! HuskyHuskie (talk) 04:38, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for your explanation and the lesson in Illinois politics. I had no idea the GA would be so, ahem, silly as to declare a non-language to be the state's official language, so I just assumed the edit was vandalism and perhaps even a bit racist/anti-immigration, especially since a reference was removed in the process. I'm glad someone with a deeper knowledge of Illinois politics is watching the article! --Andrew (User:90) (talk) 04:35, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
I was very young when I learned this in school, so my understanding was likely shaped by my elders' comments at the time, but I believe it was part of a whole anti-communistic, semi-xenophobic, & megapatriotic sentiment. It's not well-remembered today, and frankly, if all I had to go on were my childhood memories, I'd wonder if it had actually happened. But I know it did, because I do remember when it was repealed; made the news for a day or so. HuskyHuskie (talk) 02:30, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

"Minor" edits

Thank you for your contributions. Please remember to mark your edits as "minor" only if they truly are minor edits. In accordance with Help:Minor edit, a minor edit is one that the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute. Minor edits consist of things such as typographical corrections, formatting changes, or rearrangement of text without modification of content. Additionally, the reversion of clear-cut vandalism and test edits may be labeled "minor". Thank you.

In other words, any addition or deletion of material is not minor. Minor edits are things like correcting spelling, moving text without changing it, or formatting.   Will Beback  talk  17:00, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
I assume you are talking about this edit, which I agree should not have been marked as minor. I keep the box automatically checked since 99% of what I do is indeed minor, but I forgot to uncheck it that one time. I did uncheck the box for my next non-minor edit to the article. --Andrew (User:90) (talk) 15:03, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
Actually I wasn't referring to any one edit. There are many non-minor edits marked as minor: [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. Etc. (BTW- thanks for all the vandalism reverts.)  Will Beback  talk  22:27, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
Hmm, I suppose I have been using a different definition of "minor," especially with example number 7, which was simply the removal of two non-notable people added by two consecutive edits from the same IP. Also, I have always marked any talk page edits as minor, as that seemed to be what folks were doing in 2008 when I first learned Wikipedia's ropes. But with that being said, I will be less heavy handed with the minor button from now on, both in article and talk space. In fact, I will probably remove the javascript that keeps the button checked. --Andrew (User:90) (talk) 22:38, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Georgia "bully"

I liked your answer to the newbie attempting (himself) to "bully" Cluebot NG. It needed a soft answer. It also provided a needed laugh! Student7 (talk) 14:02, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

I remember doing the same thing before getting involved with Wikipedia. I would occasionally read an article and, after finding vandalism in the lead, would not be able to find it again after clicking the edit tab. A bot or another editor had taken care of it already. It's a shame readers sometimes stumble on articles in that split second between the vandal's edit and Cluebot's revert! --Andrew (User:90) (talk) 14:54, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Category additions

Please stop adding counties to the Categories:States and territories established in... These are not for counties. There doesn't appear to be any categories for County established in... Don't know if that would be necessary or not. Thank you. -- JoannaSerah (talk) 21:56, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

I will stop. However, there are quite a few counties that have been placed in these categories already. For example, Wilkes County, North Carolina is a member of Category:States and territories established in 1777. I think we certainly need to standardize how U.S. counties are categorized, as categorization is all over the map right now. Perhaps we should create Category:United States counties established in xxxx and place each county in the appropriate year? Or should each county be placed in Category:Populated places established in xxxx (for example, Category:Populated places established in 1777 contains quite a few counties across several states)? Whatever we do, we should aim for consistency. Just my thoughts. --Andrew (User:90) (talk) 21:47, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
We had an edit conflict, but wanted to add that I see you updated one cat for Buncombe County, North Carolina from 1792 establishments to 1792 establishments in the United States. That would definitely be correct for the others as well, if you wanted to correct/add those to the county pages. But the States and Territories established in ... cat would be incorrect. I too noticed that Wilkes was put in there incorrectly sometime in the past. I took that out. There's been a lot of puffery of Wilkes off and on for a little while now, that might be related to it. Anyway... Thank you for your work, I just didn't think that lower level things such as counties belonged in that cat. Your suggestion of Category:United States counties established in xxxx sounds very reasonable and I'm kind of surprised it doesn't already exist. And I agree that we need more consistency. I'm all for that. Thank you. -- JoannaSerah (talk) 21:56, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
I don't know that there were quite a few counties. All I really saw was Wilkes at first. Will have to check that more. Only appears to be NC articles like that. Haven't seen other states yet. -- JoannaSerah (talk) 21:58, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
I've got to log off for now, but sometime later I will probably poke around and try to find a place for some discussion. I don't want to create Category:United States counties established in xxxx and edit thousands of U.S. counties unless there's some consensus. But if there was consensus, I think it would be a worthwhile thing to do. And by the way, thanks for cleaning up after me. Sorry I added to your workload! --Andrew (User:90) (talk) 22:42, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

bad revert

See [9] where you reverted to a very bad version. I've taken care of restoring the page to something acceptable. DGG ( talk ) 16:07, 2 May 2012 (UTC) .

Could you explain why, for example, Germany or Belgium or Brazil needs to be discussed, but Norway did not, why two of the three Irelands need to be discussed but but all three UKs don't? I'm just spent the entire day going through those categories preparing those routinely on the basis that oodles of similar others exist, have been accepted no problem, and you've just declined the lot even though there is obvious ample scope for inclusion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.40.106.197 (talk) 01:09, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

I declined the category requests because I did not see any community discussion at the most relevant Wikiproject regarding their creation. It is always a good idea to gain consensus from others who are involved with the area of Wikipedia in question before making mass changes.
I also was not involved in the acceptance of the previous requests. That was User:Huon, User:K7L, and User:Callanecc. You may want to ask one of them to create the categories if they are willing.
However, I would still highly recommend starting a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Television before going any further. Your request to mass create categories may have been a bit premature, but I do not come around enough to get any further involved in the issue. I apologize if I stepped on anyone's toes.
--Andrew (User:90) (talk) 01:23, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
But why bother having WP:AFC/R at all then? Anything suggested by anyone could be refused just like that because the relevant WikiProject hasn't been told. Sounds like Wikipedia is becoming a BUREAUCRACY. What about this policy? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.40.106.197 (talk) 01:29, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
True, anything could potentially be refused for that reason. But the good news is that Wikipedia has an undo button, as you know, because you undid my refusal. When I review redirect and category requests, I usually accept reasonable requests if they are not going to cause a lot of pages to be modified. But I have learned from experience (see here) that toes tend to get stepped on when making mass changes without first discussing them. I am not willing to make that kind of mass change in this case, but perhaps someone else is willing. Again, I would recommend discussing the issue with one of the users I mentioned above.
And as far as WP:BUREAUCRACY goes, I have long thought Wikipedia is bureaucratic in many respects. Again, that is why I am a fan of the undo button and that is why I am not going to edit war with you by re-declining the requests that you have opened back up. Just leave them open and let others chime in as well.
Cheers!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. 2019 US Banknote Contest

US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here
