Welcome to Wikipedia!

Welcome to Wikipedia!
Hello IP user. Welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for your contributions!

I'm Ad Orientem, one of the other editors here, and I hope you decide to stay and help contribute to this amazing repository of knowledge. Although you're free to perform most tasks on Wikipedia without registering, it's highly recommended you create an account as there are many added benefits. It's private and secure and it's also free, simple, and quick to do.

Some pages of helpful information to get you started:
  Introduction to Wikipedia
  The five pillars of Wikipedia
  Editing tutorial
  How to edit a page
  Simplified Manual of Style
  The basics of Wikicode
  How to develop an article
  How to create an article
  Help pages
  What Wikipedia is not
Some common sense Dos and Don'ts:
  Do be bold
  Do assume good faith
  Do be civil
  Do keep cool!
Do maintain a neutral point of view
  Don't spam
  Don't infringe copyright
Don't edit where you have a conflict of interest
  Don't commit vandalism
  Don't get blocked
If you need further help, you can:
  Ask a question
or you can:
  Get help at the Teahouse
or even:
Ask an experienced editor to "adopt" you

Alternatively, leave me a message at my talk page or type {{Help me}} here on your talk page and someone will try to help.

There are many ways you can contribute to Wikipedia. Here are a few ideas:
  Fight vandalism
Be a WikiFairy or a WikiGnome
  Help contribute to articles
  Perform maintenance tasks

Become a member of a project that interests you
  Help design new templates
Subscribe and contribute to The Signpost
Translate articles from Wikipedias in other languages

To get some practice editing you can use a sandbox. If you register an account, you can create your own personal sandbox for use any time. It's perfect for working on bigger projects. Then for easy access in the future, you could put a link to it on your user page.

Please remember to:

  • Always sign your posts on talk pages. You can do this either by clicking on the button on the edit toolbar or by typing four tildes ~~~~ at the end of your post. This will automatically insert your IP address linked to your contributions page (however, if you create an account, your IP address will be hidden and you will be able to build a custom signature that can link to your own user page), a link to this IP's talk page, and a timestamp.
  • Leave descriptive edit summaries for your edits. Doing so helps other editors understand what changes you have made and why you made them.
The best way to learn about something is to experience it. Explore, learn, contribute, and don't forget to have some fun!

Sincerely, Ad Orientem (talk(Leave me a message) 17:00, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Edit filters, anonymous editing, and accounts

[edit]

I see that your editing has hit a number of edit filters. None of them has stopped you from editing (at least not while you have been on this IP address), but there's a good chance that sooner or later an edit filter will block your edits. Since many edit filters don't operate on established accounts, you may like to consider creating an account, to avoid that risk. (Note: if you know all about creating accounts, and prefer not to, that's fine. I am just offering a suggestion in case it may be helpful to you. Unlike many editors, I have no problem with editors who choose not to have an account.) JBW (talk) 18:26, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tried that once. The same filters that warn IP editors about their edits actively disallow newly registered editors from making the same edits (the one that warns unregistered editors for 'misusing' user talk pages for adding {{uw-vand1}} templates disallows newly registered accounts from doing so, which is insane). So I vanished my account after a few hours and went back to IP vandal fighting. 80.42.207.226 (talk) 21:52, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I know that, but that only happens for a short time while the account is new, and after that you're OK. However, so long as you know what the situation is, and are acting from choice, not ignorance, it's obviously up to you. JBW (talk) 20:22, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, your addition of one or more external links to the page Banaras Hindu University has been reverted.
Your edit here to Banaras Hindu University was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove links which are discouraged per our external links guideline. The external link(s) you added or changed (https://copyvios.toolforge.org/?lang=en&project=wikipedia&title=Banaras_Hindu_University&url=https://tktindia.weebly.com/founder.html&oldid=1251586630, https://tktindia.weebly.com/founder.html) is/are on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia.
If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. However, if the link does not comply with our policies and guidelines, but your edit included other, constructive, changes to the article, feel free to make those changes again without re-adding the link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. Thanks! --XLinkBot (talk) 23:43, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If this is a shared IP address, and you didn't make the edit, please ignore this notice.

This bot is badly programmed. It should not be reverting links that are within a {{copyvio-revdel}} template, as this is achieving the exact opposite of what it is approved for. 80.42.207.226 (talk) 10:40, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
