Background
[edit]Li Zicheng's retreat and death
[edit]After his failure at Tong Pass, Li Zicheng abandoned Xi'an, the capital of his dynasty, and retreated to Jingzhou and Xiangyang. Li then further left Jingzhou and marched east, aiming at annexing Jiangnan. The guard general of Jingzhou, Zheng Siwei, surrendered to Qing thereafter. Li's troops were catched up and defeated near Jiujiang in May 1645, however, forcing him to march west. He then decided to enter Hunan, but was killed at Mount Jiugong on 29 May. It took several days for Shun troops to integrate themselves, and they entered Hunan in August 1645.
