Amerivision Song Contest

The Amerivision Song Contest 2003 was the fourty-eighth edition of the annual Amerivision Song Contest, organised by the American Broadcasting Union (ABU), host broadcaster Trinidad and Tobago Television (TTT). The edition was hosted in the Larry Gomes Stadium, in Arima, Trinidad and Tobago, as the country earned the right to host the event by winning the previous edition.

This was the first edition where the semifinal system was implemented, retiring the relegation system. The semifinal was hosted on the wednesday and the final on the saturday.

Host picking

[edit]

While other venues showed interest in hosting the contest, the Larry Gomes Stadium was considered by a large margin to be the most suitable venue for the contest, so, the day after Trinidad and Tobago confirmed it was going to host the event, they also announced that the contest would also be hosted in the Larry Gomes Stadium, same venue as the 1997 contest.

Semi-final implementation

[edit]

The 2003 contest marked the end of the relegation system in the contest, in place of it, a preceeding semifinal show on wednesday was implemented so all interested nations can participate, with the ten best performing nations in the semifinal moving to the final together with the big four — Brazil. Canada, Mexico and the United States — and the ten best performing non-big four nations in the 2002 contest.

The edition saw the return of the relegated nations of 2002 in the contest, plus El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panama and Paraguay, as well as the debut of Greenland. However, the Netherlands Antilles withdrew from the contest after their first ever last place finish.
