Saw your review of the renomination of Tel-Aviv at FAC and was impressed with your control of the language and the issues. Although your interest is mainly in ships, we'd be delighted if you reviewed FACs whenever you find time! It's a powerful way of influencing the whole project WRT standards of prose. Yes! Less pain would be good!
In response, thanks for all the nitpicking. You asked the questions that had to be asked, and instead of laying down ultimatums like some PR/FA responders do, you were more than happy to go out of your way to work to a mutually beneficial solution, and took the time to review the sources to make sure we were correct.
I owe you:
- my undying gratitude
- Assistance to drag an article of your choice and writing to FA standard, kicking and screaming if necessary

Nimrod Expedition
[edit]This is to thank you for your copyedits and other review comments. Your help during the assembly of this series of expedition histories has been much appreciated. This is the last of the "big four" British Antarctic efforts, though I shall continue to write about minor expeditions, and about individual explorers. I'm glad that you found the articles interesting. Brianboulton (talk) 10:07, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Anyway, your help in reviewing and supporting these expedition articles during the past few months is very much appreciated; you must know the stories well enough now to write your own versions. Nimrod's promotion completes my main project (all four major Brit Antarctic expeditions, and their leaders, to FA). In the next months I shall be working on the minor expeditions and the supporting casts, not particulary with FA ambitions in mind, but generally to extend and improve the quality of these articles. Warm thanks, once again - I feel I owe you some favours. Brianboulton (talk) 11:16, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

I know how to write, and how to cite, but a lot of the Wikipedia knowledge is material I don't know. Infoboxes? What a great idea! Of course I've seen them on Wikipedia pages, but never thought much about them, nor ever edited one. I think I may have over-cited the article a bit, but I read legal and academic journal articles which are full of cites, so am used to it. I feel badly when I see uncited material in WP, though, someone took the time to write something but we can't verify it... About the NRHP, it was mentioned several times so I feel confident it is true, and it had a backstory, so it seems to be true. I tried to find the Nobska on the NRHP, but indeed as you point out since it/she doesn't exist any more, the ship is not listed. (I am wondering if WP has a convention for feminizing the pronoun of ships....) I'll check out the Elkman.net site. Yeah I'm trying to not be overly possessive since that is not how WP works, but I am very curious to see if people look at the new page and what they do when they do. You cleaned it up, two people rated it and added it to projects, another commented on my talk page, another pointed out there are too many cites a few times on the Nobska talk page. Amazing range of responses!--Wmjames (talk) 16:15, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Maralia, I'm not sure if I ever encountered you on here before but I've been around the featured article candidate block a few times. There was a time when I refused to nominate any articles for FAC because of the excruciatingly ego-busting battle experience that is FAC. This recent FAC for James Russell Lowell, however, has been one of the most positive experiences of my tenure here at Wikipedia. Your comments were extremely thorough, well-considered, and presented in the true spirit of this project: helpful collaboration. I have never been known to take criticism well, but I was unable to consider any of your comments critical. Instead they were sincerely helpful... isn't that what WP is all about? I considered offering you a barnstar. Instead, I offer these (public) words of thanks and of praise. You are, as I said, nothing less than awesome and a true credit to Wikipedia. I look forward to further e-interaction. --Midnightdreary (talk) 11:19, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

You've been cited
[edit]The Spurgeon Series 1855 & 1856: Unabridged Sermons In Modern Language cites a userspace page you started, http://en.wikipedia.org/User:Maralia/SS_Arctic ,rather than the article space article on theSS Arctic. I discovered this when I was reviewing the deletion of the article on the SS Vesta.
Incidentally, I requested a deletion review on the SS Vesta.
I saw the ships userbox on your user page. Perhaps you have an opinion on how much weight should be given to the essay WP:Notability (vehicles) in discussions over deleting articles on ships?
The essay argues we should only have articles on exceptional individual "vehicles", and that, usually, anything meaningful should go in the article on the vehicle's class.
I can see some sense behind applying the advice in this essay to cars, trucks, bicycles, carts, trains -- even airplanes. But it seems to me bo be both contrary to our usual practice with ship, and contrary to what makes sense.
Fighter aircraft and airliners can be as expensive as ships, or even more expensive. But they are also more standardized than ships, and they undertake different kinds of missions. Fighters almost always fly in squadrons with identical fighters. Airliners share routes with identical airliners. Whereas naval vessels, coast guard vessels, fishery and environmental patrol vessels, tramp freighters, and many other kinds of ships normally proceed alone, on open ended voyages, that may not be repeated.
Do you think it would make sense to change that essay so it explicitly excludes ships from its advice?
Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 19:26, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
- Good grief! It's bad enough to cite Wikipedia in the first place, but citing a subpage in my userspace?! Astonishing.
- I would not choose to argue the deletion of SS Vesta; if I recall correctly, it was a nondescript merchant ship routinely used to carry men and supplies to a far-flung fishing station. While it did gain a certain notoriety as a result of the Arctic incident, a redirect is surely sufficient.
- As to the question of ship notability in general, I'm afraid I have been out of the loop, wiki-wise, for too long to have much to contribute to the conversation. For what it's worth, in 2007–2008 I revamped the WP:SHIPS project page and created Wikipedia:WikiProject Ships/sidebar, which was intended to list all relevant guidance. The notability essay you mention is not listed therein, nor do I recall ever being aware of its existence. That being said, however, I find the requirements listed in Wikipedia:Notability (vehicles)#"Individual vehicles" to be quite reasonable. (The scare quotes in that essay, though, are inexcusable.)
- Thanks for letting me know about Vesta, and about the cite. I really must get off my duff and rewrite Arctic someday. It's a sensational story.

Wishing you and yours a joyous, healthful, and productive 2013! Please accept a belated thank you for the well wishes upon my retirement as FAC delegate this year, and apologies for the false alarm of my first—and hopefully last—retirement; the well wishes extended me were most kind, but I decided to return, re-committed, when another blocked sock was revealed as one of the factors aggravating the FA pages this year. Maintaining standards in featured content requires vigilance, dedication and knowledge of people like you, who are needed; reviews are always welcome at FAC, FAR and TFA requests. Somehow, somehow we never ever seem to do nothin' completely nice and easy, but here's hoping that 2013 will see a peaceful road ahead and a return to the quality and comaraderie that defines the FA process, with the help of many dedicated Wikipedians! [edit]...for closing all those FAC candidates. I can't begin to imagine the tedium that it entailed. The community owes you a big favour, or at least a big hug. Graham. Graham Colm (talk) 21:47, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks; it's nice to be appreciated. The closing work itself wasn't too painful—just a few hours of boredom—but I found a few opportunities for process improvement along the way. (Only the first one is really important to FAC, but I'm listing all three here so I have a reference point for follow-up.)
- First I documented the FAC/FAR closing process as best I could. I hope GimmeBot returns soon, but a bot owner has offered to write a backup/replacement so I'm trying to help cover our bases.
- Next I tackled a frequent failure point in {{ArticleHistory}}: when the template attempts to lookup a GA topic name, it doesn't always get a result, causing an ArticleHistory error. This was complicated to research and rewrite because I had to make sure that none of the four other templates that use the same lookup table would be adversely affected by changes. I proposed a rewrite here.
- Last of all, I found a few minor errors in the ArticleHistory code, and proposed a solution.
- I probably already spent as much time on each one of these issues as it took me to do all the closings, but they had to be addressed eventually. Hoping to get them all resolved soon, to reduce the administrative demands of the closing process. Maralia (talk) 18:14, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- You're awesome. Maybe if those proposals don't get addressed at those talk pages we can escalate to WP:VPT? Biosthmors (talk) 20:01, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- What I am is exceedingly stubborn! Also tired of fixing ArticleHistory errors. And eminently distractible: let's not forget how I told you two sections above this that I was committed to finishing my open projects before attacking anything else...oops.
- The audience for those template pages is quite small, so it may take a little time before my talk page notices garner attention. This is no big deal, as neither of those proposed changes is particularly urgent. If they fail to catch anyone's eye there after a while, I will approach a few folks who I know are already familiar with the specific templates—going to VPT would require asking some poor sod to learn the ArticleHistory code, and I'd rather not have that on my conscience :) Maralia (talk) 21:39, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!
[edit]The Minor Barnstar | ||
Thanks for your efforts to create "article history" sections for so many GAs--it's a big job, and I appreciate your taking it on. -- Khazar2 (talk) 15:18, 20 March 2013 (UTC) |
- Thank you! GimmeBot used to perform this task, but has been AWOL for a couple of months, so I'm trying to make a dent in the backlog while writing up a plan for a replacement. It's probably foolish to bother doing any manually, but it feels irresponsible to just let them all go for months. Thanks for noticing; it's nice to be appreciated. Maralia (talk) 17:41, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
- A thanks from me too. I didn't realise you were doing this manually until I popped over to Gimmis page to see what was happening to Gimmebot. If it is possible could you add the review process into this bots function. I left a request at User talk:Gimmetrow#Update the article history following Good article reassessments a few months ago. It is not a major as GARs are much less common than GANs, but it might be easier to code it all at once. We can adapt the closing instructions to the bot so don't worry about adhering to them too closely. If it is too tricky don't worry about it, we have survived for years now doing it manually. Thanks again. AIRcorn (talk) 18:07, 30 March 2013 (UTC)
DYK for Lotte Brand Philip
[edit]On 24 October 2013, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Lotte Brand Philip, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Albrecht Dürer's paintings of his parents were reunited in 2012 after art historian Lotte Brand Philip identified the portrait of his mother, thought lost since the 17th century? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Lotte Brand Philip. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Thank you! She is now featured on Portal:Germany. If you have other DYK related to Germany, feel free to place it there yourself, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:14, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
- Congrats Maralia for finally having this approved! I've been sitting on my hands watching, wanting to chime in since the answers were sitting on my page (moved here now, but didn't want to muddy the waters more. Good luck to you guys with the diptych. Victoria (talk) 20:40, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
Thank for your patient explanations

Many thanks to you, Maralia, and you too, SandyGeorgia, for showing me the ropes on updating article history. You've just taught a man to fish, and now I have no excuse if I don't eat for a lifetime. Thanks for your patience. – Quadell (talk) 23:18, 18 November 2013 (UTC) |
- It is nice of you to give me a barnstar on Maralia's page ... I am thinking of asking TonyTheTiger if he would be a dear and place a copy on my talk page, since I feel an extreme COI were I to do it myself, and my self-esteem will suffer if I don't have this :) :) SandyGeorgia (Talk) 16:47, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

Wishing you all the best for 2014, not only in appreciation for the Dürer collaboration but in recognition of the thankless.endless.fucking.herculean.task.you have taken on. And for your mostly good humoured toleration of the ire of those that dont realise the mundane everyday work that goes on around here to keep FA ticking over. God or the devil give you strength.
