Early in the morning of 7 October 2023, approximately 3000 militants,[77][78] from Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the PFLP, and DFLP,[79] breached the Gaza fence and attacked multiple locations in Southern Israel.[77][78] Following this the IDF blckaided, bombed, and then invaded the Gaza Strip.
Israeli first responders reportedly recovered documents from killed militants' bodies with instructions to attack civilians, including elementary schools and a youth center, to "kill as many people as possible", and to take hostages for use in future negotiations.[citation needed] [80][81][82][83]

- ^ Population data from 2022 unless otherwise stated.[85][86]
- ^ Most of the civilian areas on the Israeli side of the Gaza border had lightly armed volunteer security teams.[6]
- ^ Includes on duty police, military, and other professional armed security forces. Off duty IDF reservists were counted as civilians, so some available lists of names include more people with military ranks than the official number of military deaths.[citation needed]
- ^ The 7 October attacks were planned by Hamas and led by their militant wing the Al-Qassam Brigades, but 3 other groups also claimed the attacks. The other 3 factions involved were a Sunni / Pan-Islamic [citation needed] Islamist group Palestinian Islamic Jihad's militant wing Saraya Al-Quds, and two much smaller Marxists / Nationalist factions the PFLP and DFLP. After the attacks Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) claimed they were holding at least 30 hostages.[87] A small number of hostages, including the youngest, were only ever publicly described as being held by "other groups" - this could have been the PFLP or DFLP. [citation needed]
- ^ Attendance at the festival was reported to be 3,500 but figures vary.[88] After the attack, relatives searching for missing loved ones said more than one thousand were at the event at the time of the attack.[89] Some festival attendees estimated 3,000–4,000 people.[89] An emergency medic who responded to the massacre at the festival placed attendance at 3,000.[90]
- ^ There were at least two additional soldiers on duty that day who survived.[95]
- ^ including the Bibas family
- ^ Rockets were hard at 6:30am and the militants entered the Bibas home at 9:45am [2]
- ^ Witnesses said a number of people including women, children and babies were killed execution-style by Israeli forces while sheltering inside the school.[3]
- ^ Dozens of bodies discovered, including children, who had been shot at close range. Video and images obtained by Al Jazeera on 13 Dec 2023 showed bodies piled up inside the Shadia Abu Ghazala School in the al-Faluja area, west of the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip. Witnesses said a number of people including women, children and babies were killed execution-style by Israeli forces while sheltering inside the school. The woman said there were newborn children among them. “The Israeli soldiers executed those innocent families at point blank,” she added. Reporter Al Jazeera's Hani Mahmoud is in southern Gaza in Rafah.[3]
- ^ Displaced persons were sheltering at the school.
- ^ in the al-Faluja area, west of the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip.[3]
- ^ predominantly women and children[3]
- ^ “The Israeli soldiers came in and opened fire on them,” a woman at the scene said. “They took all men, then entered classrooms and opened fire on a woman and all the children with her.”
- ^ The victims were reportedly killed overnight starting on Tuesday 12 December 2023, but this could not be confirmed. It could have been some time earlier because the bodies were already decomposed when seen on 13 December 2023 the bodies were already decomposed.[2]

- ^ Most of the civilian areas on the Israeli side of the Gaza border had lightly armed volunteer security teams.[125]
- ^ Includes on duty police, military, and other professional armed security forces. Off duty IDF reservists were counted as civilians, so some available lists of names include more people with military ranks than the official number of military deaths.[citation needed]
- ^ Attendance at the festival was reported to be 3,500 but figures vary.[88] After the attack, relatives searching for missing loved ones said more than one thousand were at the event at the time of the attack.[89] Some festival attendees estimated 3,000–4,000 people.[89] An emergency medic who responded to the massacre at the festival placed attendance at 3,000.[90]
- ^ The 7 October attacks were planned by Hamas and led by their military wing the Al-Qassam Brigades, but at least 3 other groups also took part on the day, The other 3 factions were a second Islamist group Palestinian Islamic Jihad's Saraya Al-Quds , and two much smaller Marxists / Nationalist factions the PFLP and DFLP. One third of the hostages were subsequently held by Islamic Jihad.[citation needed] A small number of hostages, including the youngest, were only ever publicly described as being held by "another group", this could have been the PFLP of DFLP.[citation needed]
- ^ There were at least two additional soldiers on duty that day who survived.[95]
- ^ 22 hospitals were ordered to evacuate but many patients could not be safely relocated.[138] No suitable alternative hospital facilities were provided. Most evacuation orders were refused,[165] until the hospitals were occupied by Israeli ground forces.

- ^ At least 5 premature infants were left in the hospital when staff were forced to evacuate.
