Moving chem articles
You probably want to move 1-testosterone to fix the name as well. Apparently you have to be and admin to do that, so I couldn't do it.
Also should 7α-methyl-19-nortestosterone have capital M? I was planning to start an article about it. Xasodfuih (talk) 17:12, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
- OK, I have moved the 1-testosterone article. And, yes, the title of the other article is best as 7α-Methyl-19-nortestosterone. Thanks for creating those articles! -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:19, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
War Against Islam
Could you provide us with a little information on the weasel words, etc. that earned the article this tag? {{Articleissues |restructure=March 2008 |synthesis=January 2009 |refimprove=January 2009 |weasel=January 2009 |POV=January 2009}} --BoogaLouie (talk) 20:26, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
- I haven't had any involvement in that page except to semi-protect it earlier today due to the disruptive editing of multiple IPs. The template indicating issues with the article was added by User:OttoTheFish, so it's probably best to ask him. -- Ed (Edgar181) 22:41, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

- There has been a significant about of discussion on the categorization of pharmacology articles at WT:PHARM:CAT, and, if available, would love your input. kilbad (talk) 00:13, 14 February 2009 (UTC)
- I've read through that page and the current proposals seem quite reasonable. But, to be honest, I don't have much interest in the details, so I don't think I have anything more to add to the discussion. Thanks for letting me know though. -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:56, 14 February 2009 (UTC)
Acetophenone
I have been messing around on acetophenone (ACP), particular dueling with my own miscues (new keyboard) today. But I wanted to let you know that I reverted your repair of some persistent anonymous editor. The article is in pretty okay shape, the mystery editor insists that ACP is used as a precursor to styrene via hydride reduciton, etc, and lo it turns out that significant amts of styrene are made from ACP, blah, blah, blah. My main message was that things are semi-ok.--Smokefoot (talk) 23:47, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for taking care of it. -- Ed (Edgar181) 01:24, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Hello Edgar, My name is Lillian Shields, You just recently deleted a page that was posted by a kittsee. They had the information from my web page all wrong, They vandalized my information, calling it the diniosis disease as i recall it.They lied and I am truely gratefull that you terminated the article! - I think an article on sulfonyl halides would be a good idea. There is already the recently created article sulfonyl chloride, which could be merged into a new sulfonyl halide article.
- Done. Can I "mop-up" the effectively merged (but really copied) content by just "clearing" with a redirect? Thanks again. -Shootbamboo (talk) 20:41, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
- That seems like the best thing to do, so I've made the redirect. Thanks for creating the article. -- Ed (Edgar181) 21:51, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

Vera Ducas
I was suprised that my article on Vera Ducas was so speedly deleted. Perhaps the life and death of one Jewish woman is not of interest. I was hoping to expand the article by including the names of two other Jews and the reports of a further three un-named who where killed by the underground in Palestine/Israel during 1948. Or is this not suitabled for the wikipedia? Padres Hana (talk) 22:02, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

208.68.153.177
It looks like you performed the most recent block of this school IP. That was back in April. Every month since, except for July-August, 208.68.153.177's talk page has at least one complaint or warning about its vandalism. The warnings look rather silly when they don't lead to any action for well over half a year. Time for a new (and longer!) block? Thanks, - Hordaland (talk) 00:16, 20 January 2009 (UTC)
- It looks like every edit for the last six months from that IP address has been vandalism, so I have re-blocked. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:36, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

IP indef block
Hey there - I noticed you blocked 70.107.45.254 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) indefinitely. While racist vandalism such as that may deserve a block without warning, per Wikipedia:Blocking IP addresses, IP addresses should almost never be indefinitely blocked. From my understanding consensus is that this means something like a WP:OFFICE or OTRS action. Personally, I rarely treat that type of vandalism differently in terms of block lengths, and would have only given 24 hours as the IP has never being blocked previously, although I can understand a longer block. Do you have a problem with unblocking and/or reblocking for a set period of time? Thanks, VegaDark (talk) 06:43, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
- For racist vandalism, I generally don't wait for warnings before blocking; but, wow, I have no idea why that wasn't a 24 hour block. All I can say is that it was inadvertent - I have never intentionally blocked an IP address indef. I have unblocked the address now. Thanks for catching the error and letting me know. -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:39, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks, and FYI, there's another indef IP block under your name at Wikipedia:Database reports/Indefinitely-blocked IPs in case you wanted to deal with that one as well. VegaDark (talk) 17:14, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
New article deletion
I just began a new article about a group of several hundred folks doing good work in Yellowstone Park, Yellowstone Loons, and you deleted for no apparent reason. question?
Can you explain, from one PhD to another why you deleted the "Yellowstone Loon" entry? Hey Edgar181, I was wondering if you and any other Wikipedia Administrators get paid / make a living off editing for Wikipedia. Question on protocol
Hi Ed,
I represent ActiveCause. We help nonprofits raise money. We are currently assisting 70 organizations raise money through corporate partnerships. One of our staff members apparently created a page early last year which was deleted due to guidelines. I have no knowledge of what that article looked like. But we would like to create a new article that follows appropriate guidelines.
My question is - do we recreate a new article or send it to you for review first? I wanted to verify with you before I invest the time. We have plenty of objective 3rd party/ verifiable sources that we will include. Thanks for your time.
Craig
CraigNYC (talk) 22:20, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
- You can look at Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) and see if you think your organization meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion. To create the article, you do not need anyone's prior approval or review first. Just keep in mind that if any editor feels the organization does not meet inclusion criteria, they may nominate it for deletion. Alternately, you may also create a draft of the article on a user subpage (see Wikipedia:Subpages), and then ask me or any other editor to take a look and see what they think. It can then be moved to a proper article title at a later time. Finally, you may want to take a look at Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines first, though. I hope this helps. -- Ed (Edgar181) 22:31, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

Deletion of Consep
Hello,
I created the wiki Consep page - but this has been deleted. I would like to enter some kind of discussion about this, to understand why it is being deleted. Looking at wiki guidelines, the page seems relevant to me - the organisation is a Social Enterprise, and free open-source publisher in this sector. consepconsulting.com Furthemore, other, more commercial organisations have wiki pages that remain - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategic_Sustainability_Consulting -
I would appreciate your help with this. Many thanks, M
the content that was deleted:
Consep Consulting is a Social Enterprise in the United Kingdom which acts to improve the environmental and sustainability performance of organisations.
As well as giving free advice to business, Consep offers specific and in-depth consultation. Sustainability services include sustainability planning, supply chain management, sustainability reporting and disclosure, and stakeholder engagement; environmental services include environmental management system implementation, strategy development, and marketing development.
Consep acts as an open-source publishing house for articles in the environmental and sustainability sector – articles are edited and published freely online
Masterthomas (talk) 12:43, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
- The article has been deleted three times by different administrators, each time because the article did not make any assertion of notability. You can take a look at Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) to see Wikipedia's guidelines for inclusion. If you can write an article about Consep that demonstartes that the organization meets these criteria (such as having significant coverage in reliable independent sources), the article will be kept. As for other articles, if you feel they do not meet Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, you are free to nominate them for deletion. I hope this helps. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:38, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
Wulff Dotz
Hi!
I made the mistake of saying originally that when R(L) and R(S) are phenyl it makes an indane/indene. This could be tough because they are suppose to be alkynes attached to R(L) and R(S). Although theoretically one could use benzyne for this reaction. Usually CO just does not insert making the product. I would like to fix this mistake if that is ok. Or if you had some other corrections.
- I understand now. I didn't realize at the time that there was a mistake in what was being removed. Please feel free to make whatever corrections you think are necessary. Sorry for the confusion. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:38, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
Hi Ed. Can you please check the CAS number in the CAS database? The article in de-WP has 9002-92-0 additionally. Thanks in advance. --Leyo 16:45, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
- According to CAS, 3055-99-0 has the structure that matches File:Polidocanol.png (8 ethoxy groups) and 9002-92-0 has an unspecified number n ethoxy groups. "Polidocanol" is listed by CAS as a synonym of 9002-92-0, but not of 3055-99-0. PubChem lists two structures with the synonym "polidocol". One with 8 ethoxy groups, one with 1 ethoxy group (but PubChem is prone to errors). Just looking through Google results, it seems most chemical suppliers match the CAS# 3055-99-0, the synonym "policanol", and the structure File:Polidocanol.png (for example Chemspider or Sigma-Aldrich). My guess is that varying production/purification methods for polidocanol lead to mixtures of structures centered around 8 ethoxy groups, with the highest quality product being entirely 8 ethoxy groups. -- Ed (Edgar181) 18:34, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for the detailed reply. As far as I see, also the entries in ESIS (3055-99-0, 9002-92-0) are consistent with that. I added a note in the de-WP article. --Leyo 19:01, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
Is chrysolaminarin a glucan?
Hi Edgar181. The chrysolaminarin article was recently tagged as an orphan and I was wondering if it should be added to the list in the glucan article. It doesn't seem right that the brand is not even mentioned under Keebler.

- If you are asking about a version of Club Cracker that I deleted last year, it was just vandalism. If you want to add something about Club Crackers to Wikipedia, probably the best thing to do is to just add info to the Keebler Company article which is fairly short. -- Ed (Edgar181) 19:49, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

- If it's so hard to find information about the product, perhaps that's good indication that Wikipedia doesn't need an article about it. -- Ed (Edgar181) 23:57, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Made some changes recently. Could you comment, please? Thanks! --Rifleman 82 (talk) 14:27, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- Very nicely done. I made a few minor copyedits, but that's it. Thanks for taking the time upgrade the article! -- Ed (Edgar181) 14:39, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- Hey Ed, thanks for the kind words, and thank you for the barnstar! No issue with the Appel reaction. It seemed to make sense, but I wasn't sure. I thought the logical next step might be to edit alkyl and aryl chlorides, since their synthesis is very similar. But organochloride seems a little broad for that. --Rifleman 82 (talk) 14:55, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- I removed the image showing the mechanism with PCl5 as well (File:Action of phosphorus pentachloride on carboxylic acid.png), because there seems to be quite a bit of mechanisms on this page already. Do you think we should leave it off? --Rifleman 82 (talk) 15:03, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- Now that you mention it, perhaps it doesn't contribute too much to the article, considering its similarity to the SOCl2 mechanism. Also, File:Action of thionyl chloride on carboxylic acid.png could (should?) be simplified by removal of the middle line (loss of HCl followed by addition of HCl to the same location). -- Ed (Edgar181) 15:28, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

CMC Markets page
Hi there,
Thanks for reviewing the CMC Markets Wikipedia page. Apologies for the violations I have incurred as a result. As (I hope) you can see, I have tried to keep the article to factual information only and there is no inducement or sales message within.
My reasons for inclusion of the page are that CMC Markets is a global organisation and a market leader in it's field. There are references to our company on Wikepedia within a number of articles and I feel that the page can help to legitimise our business on the site.
Would you be able to give me a steer as to how the entry can be improved perhaps to a full company entry? I am happy to provide whatever content is necessary to ensure that the page is fully compliant with the governing rules. My experience with the Wikipedia site amounts only to this effort so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance —Preceding unsigned comment added by NotaDestination (talk • contribs) 15:08, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
- You can have a look at related articles to see how that are formatted and what types of information they contain. At first, the article did come across as promotional to me, but it looks like another editor has already removed some of the promotional-sounding material. If you could include additional (reliable and independent) references to support information in the article, that would be helpful. You can have a look at Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) to get an idea of Wikipedia's inclusion criteria for organizations and then add referenced information that shows how CMC Markets meets these criteria. Also you might want to take a look at Wikipedia's guidelines on conflicts of interest, which seem to apply here. If you feel you have addressed the concerns expressed in the boxes at the top of the article, feel free to remove them. -- Ed (Edgar181) 16:13, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Block for 131.94.22.236
Hi, thanks for blocking Special:Contributions/131.94.22.236, it would be great if you could consider Special:Contributions/131.94.22.39, which has the exact same edit pattern. Although, it seems as though this won't stop the problem considering this threat and the edit history: 131.94.22.74 (talk+ · contribs · deleted contribs · tag · block user · block log · CheckUser); 131.94.22.75 (talk+ · contribs · deleted contribs · tag · block user · block log · CheckUser); 131.94.245.217 (talk+ · contribs · deleted contribs · tag · block user · block log · CheckUser); 131.94.22.181 (talk+ · contribs · deleted contribs · tag · block user · block log · CheckUser); 131.94.22.72 (talk+ · contribs · deleted contribs · tag · block user · block log · CheckUser); 131.94.22.39 (talk+ · contribs · deleted contribs · tag · block user · block log · CheckUser); 131.94.22.236 (talk+ · contribs · deleted contribs · tag · block user · block log · CheckUser).
- Actually, just after blocking 131.94.22.236, I saw the threat and I decided to rangeblock 131.94.22.xxx for a month, which includes all the above IPs. If you notice other IPs, or if the problem recurs after a month, please just let me know and I'll see what else can be done. Unblock request from User:R.T123456
User:R.T123456 has requested unblocking, claiming that "someone from his school hacked his account". Since he has no substantive edits I've suggested he create a new account, keep the password secret this time, and use the new one to edit constructively. As the blocking admin, have you any objection to my removing "prevent account creation" from his block? Tonywalton Talk 20:40, 7 March 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what you're asking. Only a block on an IP address will have a "prevent account creation" setting. The March 4th block on R.T123456 would have had a 24 hour autoblock, but he should be able create another account by now. In any case, please feel free to do whatever you deem is appropriate. -- Ed (Edgar181) 00:09, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
- Perhaps I'm dim, but the log entry seems to have "(account creation blocked)" on there. Maybe the blocking system was over-eager! Either way, I'll explicitly change the block to an indef with account creation allowed. Frankly I have little hope that this editor will create wonders, but I'll WP:AGF. Cheers, 00:57, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry, not your fault - what I wrote wasn't what I meant to say. Changing the account creation setting shouldn't make any difference since the autoblock doesn't have any effect after 24 hours. Perhaps the user was also using an IP address that is blocked from creating new accounts. Anyway, thanks for taking care of it. -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:31, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi Edgar. I seem to have made the embarrassing mistake of creating the page for this compound under the wrong name! Turns out that both 3-(p-Fluorobenzoyl)tropane and 3-(p-Fluorobenzoyloxy)tropane are known compounds with defined (but quite different) activity. So I moved the page to the correct name and posted a structure under the new name, but this still leaves the original page as a redirect and the original (incorrect) structure on wikimedia commons, does this matter? Apart from anything else I don't think the original name should be a redirect as they are not synonyms, they are two different compounds! Meodipt (talk) 01:55, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
- No problem, it's an easy mistake to make. I have deleted the redirect and fixed links from the old name to the new one. If you want the old structure deleted on Commons, you can simply mark it with the template {{badname}} and it will be speedily deleted (or just let me know and I'll delete it). -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:30, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

TV3 Medford page
Hi Ed,
TV3 Medford is currently undergoing an "evaluation" and was audited by the firm of Melanson Heath.
The individuals who refuse to let go of the TV station have posted multiple changes to the TV 3 Wikipedia page utilizing it like their own personal webpage, which isn't the intent of Wikipedia.
They have Dan Sarno - ISP #70.88.213.234 - posting the names of the self-appointed president, Frank Pilleri, along with other "board members" on the page promoting their propaganda. This is not a fair use of Wikipedia, is highly misleading, and they are deleting legitimate links to articles from the press in regards to the audit and the evaluation. They list themselves and control the Wikipedia page
TV3 Medford's staff promoting their agenda on Wikipedia
Please note that their webmaster, ZappTV, has also attempted to post the non-profit's authorized information and not objective information regarding the embattled station's history in Medford.
Shell Kinney did a decent edit previously that they changed.
Can you monitor the situtation?

User: Beanbuff
Hi Edgar, I'm a novice user who has an interest in coffee and fairtrade in general. However I have edited very little and the one article I created I put together on my user page and got feed back before putting it up. I was doing the same thing with another until Canton nominated my user page for deletion as "blatant advertising". I understand some people might take issue with many aspects of the article (I'm new, lots of mistakes) which is why I didn't just make the article. Having said all this, why delete my user page? It would have been a good article. Your and cantons criticism would surely have made it better. Thanks!Beanbuff (talk) 23:00, 16 March 2009 (UTC) 23:00, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
- Usually, your user page is reserved for information about you (see WP:USER). When someone puts information about a company or organization there, it can come across as an attempt at advertising. It's probably best to use a subpage (see WP:SUBPAGE) for articles that you are working on. I've copied the material that was on your user page and put it at User:Beanbuff/sandbox. I hope this helps, and sorry about the misunderstanding. -- Ed (Edgar181) 00:15, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi, do we have an article on sodium o-phenylphenate, under some other name? Badagnani (talk) 17:12, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

- Thanks for all of the above. I added this name, which is used in the citrus trade, in that article. What does the "o" mean? Badagnani (talk) 18:27, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
- The "o" is short for "ortho", which denotes a certain geometric relationship between various parts of the molecule. It means the same as the "2" in 2-phenylphenol. The article arene substitution patterns has details if you're interested. -- Ed (Edgar181) 22:30, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

82.76.128.81 blocking philosophy
Hello and thanks for issuing a block; i was wondering, though, what is the philosophy behind blocking a person for a day who seems to exhibit a trend of bad behaviour once every day or two and they've already performed today. ? Thanks in advance. Quaeler (talk) 11:30, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
- My preference (and common practice among other admins) is to give short blocks at first, then to give longer blocks if the user continues the inappropriate behavior thereafter. Most people seem to get the idea after the first block, and often turn into more productive contributors. If you notice that the user continues the spamming after the block expires, please just let me know and I'll block again. -- Ed (Edgar181) 16:11, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Hello, I recently created a page for the actor Beau Kazer, which I noted had previously existed on wikipedia and which you deleted in February 2008. I couldn't tell what the page had said in its previous existence, so I hope I haven't spent time recreating an article on a non-notable person. Aromatic ethers can be linear...
Hi Edgar181,
You have tagged quite a few of my structures with "Methoxy groups should not be linear". I had explained this earlier to another user somewhere. Aromatic methoxy groups and other aromatic ethers are always oriented perpendicular to the aromatic ring for steric reasons. If you look at the model from above the aromatic plane, the methoxies appear straight. I am a big proponent of retaining as many 3D structural features in 2D as possible without sacrificing clarity and correctness. We cannot use the straight orientation for carbon chains as this obscures the center carbon in skeletal structures, but I do not see a reason not to do this for aromatic ethers and I am not aware of any general rule not to do so. Maybe you can rethink your tags... :-) Cacycle (talk) 23:39, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
- I don't recall tagging images with that comment. Can you give me an example? I did find one that I commented "An ether is preferably drawn with a 120° angle" (File:Duloxetine chemical structure.png). In any case, please feel free to remove any image-quality tag I've added that you disagree with. I certainly won't object. I guess different chemists have different concerns about how best to draw a 2D structure. For example, I wouldn't mark images such as File:Acetyldihydrocodeine.svg as having the "wrong use of hashed bonds". But I see your point about aryl ethers, and I'll take your advice and refrain from tagging images with 180° ether groups. Thanks for the comment. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:32, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
- I saw Duloxetine and all the trimethoxyamphetamine SVG images (I just noticed that they were actually not made by me). As for the hashed/wedged bonds, there are explicit IUPAC recommendations [3] :-) Cacycle (talk) 12:51, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
- Those guidelines say the style used in Acetyldihydrocodeine.svg is "acceptable". -- Ed (Edgar181) 14:16, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
