Utica NY issues?

How in the world is my adding a link for a BETTER view of what Utica is a bad thing?

How is it not: Art? Media?

The newspapers make money. The TV stations make money.

So far, I have not sold any images to people because of the website, they ALL meet with me to discuss things and generally I HELP them.

I have contacts in the Mayors office, the landmark and historical society. If they can have links, why would my links be removed? Again, if someone comes here to look into Utica for whatever reason, what does visiting my site HURT, more than HELP?

I know what you are trying to eliminate, but I am not going that route. My connections run much deeper locally and I do not need this, but I really think it is a very nice FREE service to look at images we take for the city.

Bottom line, there is NO fee to visit our site. Nor are we pushy about buying images.

Kayla Festa, Corning NY

I added the "citation needed" link after your reinsertion of Kayla M. Festa. For a person to be called "famous" I'd assume that they should at least appear in a web search. You may know something that I don't about this person...

I also did some research on the Ginger Snap and learned that Ginger Snaps have been around since the time of medieval fairs. If she is truly the inventor she should be listed and referenced from that wikipedia page as well.

Please let me know if I'm wrong.

Cornell Endowment Number

American Football

I'm not into RV battles. The reason I changed the Ivy League article is because the phrase Ivy League is known internationally (mainly because of movies). Internationally the phrase Football is used differently in different countries. Take a look at the football article. In fact, What you call soccer really called association football. You have a very good point, and yes, I do know that the rest of the world plays soccer without helmets and a somewhat more spherical ball:). However, articles for Pacific-10 Conference and Big Ten Conference, (homes of Michigan, Berkeley, Stanford: all world recognized schools) reference football in the opening sections, but refer to it as plain Football, wikified to link to American Football. I've tried searching around WP for precedent on this, but cannot seem to find anything. My gut feeling is that it is proper to refer to a polysemic term in the vernacular of the country the article is about; so in this case, just football. What are your thoughts on this? Have you come across any relevant policy, either way, we should be following? cOrneLlrOckEy (talk) 13:38, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

It's a tough one this. If we look at the article American Football we see two key points. That American Football is a derivative and that calling it football is a nickname (see infobox). In that case I would have thought that it should be referred to by its proper name. Is there precedent? Well, American article will tend to be edited by Americans, where the more common nickname is inevitably going to be used. To be honest, I suspect this is far bigger than between us and I'm not going to spend my time trying to convince American Wikipedians to refer to their sport in a way that suits the rest of the world. Thanks for the comment on Terra Terra Terra. They're trying to get selected as the opening act for a warped tour concert right now, and that might give them some notability. I haven't seen the mini-series because I don't have cable. It looks really cool though and I hope I can either catch a re-run while I'm visiting family, or rent a DVD or something. Canadian Ivy League

Did you start the Canadian Ivy League article?

If so, a few comments:

(1) I'm a Canadian student and have never heard the term being used. (2) Nothwithstanding (1), if you are going to create this article, at least represent the evidence you have provided correctly. Read the paragraph you cite from David M. Thomas' book. He talks about Queens, then Western. THEN, he says, "ALONG WITH A FEW OTHER long-established universities such as Dalhousie...McGill...Toronto." Clearly the list includes FIVE schools. Furthermore, there is no way to argue it includes Queen's and not Western based on what he writes. (3) Something to keep in mind. He also says "In so far as there was ONCE a Canadian 'Ivy League'". He is not saying there is one now, or that this phrase has ever been used. Schoellkopf field

I got your message saying that my addition of an interactive map with other Ivy League stadiums somehow violated the TOS of Wikipedia by being an inappropriate link. I beg to differ.

• Is the FCS stadium map accessible to the reader? Yes.

• Is it proper in the context of the article? Yes; it provides a Google (satellite) map of Schoellkopf field, maps of other teams that Cornell plays in football, and provides a way to get directions. All this is information that is germane to Schoellkopf field and is above and beyond what the page itself provides.

• Is it functional, and will it continue to be so? Yes, I maintain the site and intend to keep it up.

• Are three whopping external links "dwarfing the article and detracting from the original purpose of Wikipedia"? Hardly.

I fail to see how the FCS Map site fails to meet these criteria. My website is not link spam. Yes, it does say in the TOS to avoid linking to a website I "own", and yes, I do put Adsense on the page to provide some meager money stream. But merely because I own it IMO is not reason enough to bring it down since I can prove easily that it provides additional value above and beyond the Wikipedia entry.

If I should present the external link in another way, please, I'm all ears.

To answer your question, the provides the following:

• A map where you can click on the school and see the Google Maps' satellite view of the stadium
• On this map, you can click other FCS schools that this school would most likely play (other Ivy League/Patriot League schools)

There is some duplicated information from Wikipedia, but the key content it shows is the Google Maps satellite image, and a way to easily navigate between all of them.

There are a lot of other stadiums that have the same fuctionality that I have on my interactive FCS Map on other stadium links: Cramton Bowl (shows Geocoordinates of stadium and external links to a tool) O'Brien Stadium (links to "Maps of OVC stadiums", another home-grown Google tool) Michigan Stadium (links to "MichiganFanSite.Com Stadium Page")

That's why I was surprised that it was taken down as linkspam. I'd like this to be reconsidered.

hello friend.

We saw that you took out the recent addition we did for the tailgating page and quite frankly we're a little bummed out. we worked hard on it. My wife who is from green bay was super excited about the fact we could add her cherished green bay packers tailgating buddies to the page. Understand that we meant no offense and we know that you started the page so we didnt' mean to step on your toes in amy way or shape. I am actually a member of a very large group of tailgaters down here in Houston and we live for tailgating. really. we woudl love to have you over any time you want and show you how we tailgate down here.

that said, i saw your comment about our addition being advertising. I can assure you that i do not get cut backs from either FOX6 milwaukee nor the tailgater magazine. i do watch and subscribe avidly to both and so are my other 85 tailgating buddies. Having our very own magazine last year has been enormous news to tailgaters all overt he country. really. not having them mentioned in the media section is just nuts. our own dedicated tailagting magazine? finally after so many years? that is way worth mentioning in wiki. Same with the Green and gold gang guys landing the tailgater of the year award. that was a huge story in green bay, was all over the news, TV, papers and bars. again not having them being mentioned on the wiki tailgating page is just not right my wife told me, we even added the video bit from fox milwaukee. i dont' see how mentioning john madden's book, espn and other guys in the above paragraph doens't qualify as advertising, and mentioning that the very unselfish and good-doers green and gold gang woudl be hurtful to anyone? they are really an awesome bunch of guys that everyone sees on tv at every single packer game.

we just think that the page needs to really show the nature of what we call a sport. we are really passionate about tailgating and so are hundred of thousands around the country. we even have our own superbowl of tailgating. we were going to upload a bunch of pictures as well to really show people what tailgating is about. Now, i am not going to lie to you sir, i don't have a history degree from Cornell, but i tailgate every week end, all my friends and family tailgate every week end. we know tailgating. we just want to share it with the world. if there is any way you can help us, or guide us or mentoring us in a way that isnt' offensive to you? we actually tried very hard to be very informative and not offend anyone or team or supporters. that page need a lot more information and we will be more than happy to contribute in any way we can.

What the???

Who do you think your are? The current representation on Wiki is a minut amount of info on the Tailgating lifestyle. Why would you delete stuff that you know nothing about. They all had references. There are some things that need to be added like:

and alot more. I am planning on getting these all back up. What are you gaining by keeping the tailgating lifestyle sites and experts off of this site? Tailgating is baked beans and cold salads... Very seldom. Gourmet food is the trend the past couple years. Reversing Doolittle photo

The photo of Col. Doolittle and his crew is not shown properly. The photo is the reverse (mirror image) of the way it is suppose to be. The original photo on the AIr Force Link (as well as other websites) shows Doolittle as second from the LEFT. The correctness of this can be verified by enlarging the Air Force photo which will allow one to read the names of some of the persons. Can't read the names in the Wikipedia photo. I'm new at this so please bear with me. The photo that needs to be reversed is attached to the Widkpedia article Doolittle Raid. The caption on the photo is: Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle (second from right) and his crew pose in front of a B-25 on the deck of the USS Hornet. The Original official Air Force photo is located at www.af.mil. (Click on Photos, then Observances, then on Doolittle's Raiders, then on Page 4.) The array of photos on this page show group photos of 11 of the 16 planes that participted in the raid. Doolittle's crew is shown as Crew 1 and Doolittle is shown in the photo as second from the LEFT. Enlarging the photo will allow reading the names of Lt. Potter (on the left), Doolittle and Lt. Doolittle Raid Photo

Hi Cornellrockey, I just checked out the Doolittle Raid photo and it appears that while the CAPTION has been changed (and now reads "..second from left"), the photo itself hasn't been changed (i.e., it still is a mirror image of the original). The photo has to be reversed so that Col. Doolittle will appear second from left. Also, the associated "Image: Doolittle raiders.jpg" needs to be changed; both reversing the photo and changing the caption. (I don't mean to be such a nudzh.) Thanks for your help. Doolittle Raid Photo

Hi again, I just checked out the photo again and it's right now. Sorry about not being able to explain explicitedly the "reverse/mirror image" notion about the photo. Apart from that, however, there is a generic problem with the way the Air Force posed the crew members which has caused other problems down the line. It's difficult to pick up from casually looking at the group photos of the flight crews, but the Air Force posed the pilot and the co-pilot slightly ahead of the remaining three crew members (navigator, bombardier and gunner). This arrangement is consistent throughout the pictures of the 16 flight crews that took part in the raid and must have been some sort of military protocol of highlighting the "commanders" of the aircraft. This results, however, in a "Front Row" and "Rear Row" arrangement which makes it cumbersome to identify individuals by name. (I hope I'm making sense here.) But this is not a problem for discussion here. Many thanks for helping on this. I like the Travel section of your page; the flags really catch one's eyes. Verifiable references.

It states, Chris was on Carmen Sandiego. there is no better way to prove that than with footage that is present on youtube. The Youtube videos also show his MySpace tour - there is no other place that someone can reference this.

The footage that is present on his pages show everything.

You ask for citations and fairly absurd things. For example, a reference that he can speak Spanish and Turkish and that he was born un Union City, NJ? If you watch his stand-up you will see that this is all accurate. Would you like me to contact Chris and ask for his birth certificate and for him to take a language test?

The MTV site is an outside source and so it the Acapella website which highlights his South Africa tours. Both those sites are credible. Chris was featured on MTV - again - the footage is on Youtube. The Bamboozle website has been changed to show the 2008 list of performers - however, their wikipedia has him listed as a performer. You are a vandal

Did you click on the picture?

He was featured on MTV as a candidate to be a housemate. Click on the pic and go to his site - the profile states his gender, hometown and age. It also offers a slew of videos which were done by Chris. Further, this site is monitored by MTV - everything on there is accurate. They would not have allowed him on television if it had not been.

We can keep going at this all day long. Not sure who you are or why you have decided to make this your internet crusade. I will personally contact Chris and let him know that you have a problem with him. All he has to do is send out a bulletin to his Myspace fanbase - and everyday you will have to deal with another fan. You can silence me - but you can't silence thousands of us. And why? Because you claim that these clear sources are unreliable? jesus - if you are really from ithaca - walk over to the registrar's office and ask about Chris Kanik. Would you like tickets to his next show? You've done great 'til now, but just don't snap (retaliate with threats, template him excessively, etc.) or else this just gets messier.
