Welcome to WikiProject Black Lunch Table, a collaborative resource and group dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of Visual Artists of African descent and the organization of information and articles on this topic. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions and various resources; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians interested in the topic. If you would like to help, please join the project, inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list below. BLT edit-a-thons will focus on the creation, updating, and improvement of Wikipedia articles pertaining to the lives and works of Black artists. Together we will create historical documents that respond to the urgent need for a reconstruction of the art historical record. All are invited to these events, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. A brief overview of the basics of Wikipedia editing will be given at the start of each edit-a-thon. We will have library resources and a list of suggested topics on hand.
Black Lunch Table project intends to fill holes in the documentation of contemporary art history, particularly narratives those pertaining to historically significant artists of African decent.
The Black Lunch Table (BLT) is an ongoing collaboration between artists Jina Valentine and Heather Hart. In its 10 year existence, the BLT has taken a variety of forms relating to this most recent iteration, in the form of the Wikipedia edit-a-thon. BLT’s aim is the production of discursive sites (at literal and metaphorical lunch tables), wherein cultural producers of color engage in critical dialogue on topics directly affecting our communities. They endeavor to create spaces, online and off, mirroring the activity and creativity present in sites where Blackness and Art are performed.
This project focuses on creative professionals and their works who create:
- Visual art of any kind including:
- Painting
- Photography
- Sculpture
- Drawing
- Video art
- Installation art
- Performance art
- Experimental film
- Textile arts
- Architecture
- Printmaking
- Illustrators
- Engravers
- Craftmakers (basketry, pottery, textiles, etc.)
We are also interested in updating records pertaining to Black arts patrons, art collectors, and art institutions, as well as lists of works and articles about individual works of art by artists of African descent.
Monday, July 13, 6pm-8pm at MoMA Library.
