Article Kifli is in rough shape, the lead is unusable for PotD. I enjoy working on food articles, so I will try to work on the lead and blurb. Pinging the nom PetarM, hoping for language help! :) --valereee (talk) 04:31, 1 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

PetarM I was more thinking that you might have access to sources in one of your languages about this item. I've done a major overhaul on the article, but we could certainly use some more. Right now it's mostly about Austrian kipfel, slightly about Hungarian kifli and Czech rohlik, but we have nothing about any of the other ones in various central European cuisines. --valereee (talk) 18:39, 2 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
--valereee Kifli in Serbia/Macedonia are always made for New Year, Christmas (7th january) and Orthodox Easter - so for main celebrations. Outside its sesame and inside is cheese (preferably sheep cheese), so they are salty. French croissant came from Wiena, when thet defetaed Turks, so they eat "moon", symobol on Turkish flag. I also doubt kifli are connected with it. Since Maceodnia was under Ottoman rule to 1912. So maybe its true kifli existed before "croissant" was made. PetarM, I did have a question also about the photo itself -- I'm a baker myself, and to me those kifli look homemade (rather than made in a bakery or factory), and that's how I captioned the PotD. Is that correct? Also, the kifli article calls the item kifla in serbo-croation, but our article on Serbian cuisine uses kiflice on a photo of several -- is that the plural form? --valereee (talk) 18:54, 2 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
--valereee: Kiflice for plural, kifla per speci. Dont know for Croats. It more Serbian/Macedonian cuisine. True, my relatives made them, see date, was 2018. Christmas. Normally they wont put so much "ingrideints" on bakery kifla. Spelt fluor (1kg) is also more expensive, sheep cheese inside, and more sesame. Here is also butter (not cheaper margharine). And 2 eggs (for around 44 kifli), some salt (5 dag), leavening agent, 1/2 l of warm (not cooked) cows milk, 2 coffee cups of oil. I will put one shot from inside tomorrow to see. Dough is done after some 15-20 min. All dough seperated to 4 circles, and each of them than seperated to 11 parts - triangles. Butter is put on finished dough. Then cheese in, pack triangle to round shape, put yellow part of egg around it, add sesame, and ready for baking, 15-20 min, 160-180°C. Normally you put wheat flour, easier and more normal. Valereee, re "kiflice": According to the article, it seems to me that "kifla" (sing.) / "kiflice" (pl.) is the word for the pastry in the Serbian language, whereas English uses "kifli" (both sing. and pl.) – in other words, that "kiflice" isn't a separate term for a special Serbian variety of the pastry. Therefore, I believe that we should use "kifli" in the last paragraph, remaining consistent throughout the blurb, as we're writing for enwiki, not srwiki. — RAVENPVFF · talk · 15:33, 5 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Also, just a little comment about my rescheduling: My intention at the outset wasn't actually to move the kifli POTD over to this date, but to shift the Giovanna d'Arco one over to the date of its premiere (15 February), as we've done for other stage-related POTDs. To replace the gap, I decided to move the latest "complete"-looking POTD blurb over to this date, which happened to be the kifli one – it was only when I looked at the file description page during copyediting that I realised the serendipitous suitability of scheduling it for 7 January! — RAVENPVFF · talk · 15:49, 5 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ravenpuff, no worries on the pluralization, it was a plate of multiple kifli, but it's unlikely anyone is going to freak out over this. The article does pluralize kifli as kiflis in the top photo, but again probably not a huge issue. And lol on the serendipitous nature of the move! And the good folks at Guild of copyeditors, seeing that it was going to be PotD on the 20th, already got to it! :) --valereee (talk) 19:19, 5 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
