[edit]Roniius: The Democratic Youth League of Japan was the official student organ of the JCP, and thus was definitively an "Old Left" group, both in terms of politics and also in terms of organizational structure. During the 68/69 protests, the DYL was constantly trying to bring about an end to the protests by offering to "mediate" between the administrations and the students. Accordingly, I would suggest it be removed from this template. --Ash-Gaar (talk) 17:21, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Ash-Gaar: Good catch. I originally was just going through my list of student groups and missed this. Removed. Roniiustalk to me 19:18, 18 June 2021 (UTC)

[edit]I would drop "Opposition to United States involvement in the Vietnam War" from the ideological section. Anti-imperialism and anti-Americanism are the ideological precursors to the opposition movements and actions. I think the events around the "Shinjuki riot" best exemplify Japanese opposition to the Vietnam War...perhaps a rename to indicate that quality? FWIW - a great template, enjoyed coming across this. - @Goldsztajn: Thanks for your comment. I'm considering moving Opposition to United States involvement in the Vietnam War to parantheses after Anti-imperialism. It was included in the template because the anti-war movement specifically (groups like Beheiren) was pretty important within the New Left, so I don't think leaving out a mention of the anti-war movement in the template is really a good idea. Tell me what you think about my proposition. Thanks again, Roniiustalk to me 11:46, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- I tend to agree with Roniius. Beheiren is a pretty crucial part of the Japanese New Left that was built explicitly on opposition to the Vietnam war as such, rather than opposition to the war arising indirectly out of any precursor ideologies. --Ash-Gaar (talk) 12:04, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- Ash-Gaar, Roniius, I completely agree that anti-war politics are a crucial part of the 1960s student/new left (everywhere in the world!) and should be part of this template ... so, no disagreement about including the issue. However, the problem is that "opposition to US involvement in the Vietnam War" is not an ideology, so that article is mis-categorised in that row. I was trying to say that if Shinjuku riot was renamed in the template eg Shinjuku riot (1968 Anti-Vietnam War protest) this might highlight the issue. Another option might be to add the English name of Beheiren in parentheses ie Beheiren (Citizen's League for Peace in Vietnam).
- Another thought: Perhaps link Women's Liberation to Women's_liberation_movement_in_Asia#Japan. Goldsztajn (talk) 12:21, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- Thinking about this a little further, given Beheiren's politics, I think adding pacifism or Non-violent resistance to the ideology row might be appropriate. Also, any reason the articles are not alphabetised? Regards, --Goldsztajn (talk) 12:50, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- Made a WP:BOLD edit, feel free to revert, quibble, fix. I'm not particularly happy with including the Japan Socialist Youth League, Liberation Faction in the insurectionary group, but struggle to find a place elsewhere for them. Regards, --Goldsztajn (talk) 02:59, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
