UAE

There is no article 'Tourism in UAE', but there is an article 'Tourism in Dubai'. Perhaps this latter article could be use in this Tourism in Asia template. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.26.123.208 (talk) 08:31, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

Adding Dubai to Template:Asia topic would mean adding it separately to every navbox based on this template, including {{Geography of Asia}}, {{Television in Asia}}, {{Music of Asia}} and many others. I've created Tourism in the United Arab Emirates as a redirect to the "Tourism in the United Arab Emirates" section of List of United Arab Emirates-related topics, which links to Tourism in Dubai. Internet in Asia

In articles like Internet in Yemen, there is a navbox at the bottom whose title is Internet in Asia. It redirects to a deleted section, so it defaults to the Internet article. That isn't helping the reader, so I wanted to unlink it. But I got lost in your labyrinth of templates transcluding each other. So I don't know if the problem is just Internet in Asia or if that's just one example of a wider problem. Art LaPella (talk) 20:31, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

You can set a custom title using the |title= parameter in {{Asia topic}}, as in {{Asia topic|Internet in|title=Internet in Asia}}. Since each article transcludes Asia topic directly, a change to each separate article is necessary, either by adding the |title=Internet in Asia parameter or replacing the direct transclusions with a new specialized {{Internet in Asia}} (I can do either quickly using AWB). SiBr4 (talk) 20:45, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
Alternatively, since {{Asia topic}} checks for existence of the title as a page and unlinks it if the page doesn't exist, deleting the Internet in Asia redirect has the same effect. SiBr4 (talk) 20:54, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

I think you're talking about rewriting the entire template somehow, so perhaps that suggestion was for SiBr4... Art LaPella (talk) 00:38, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
I moved the redirect, as suggested at the help desk. If nothing bad happens, I can fix some other continents with the same problem. Art LaPella (talk) 01:04, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
TRPoD's suggestion was to make Internet in Asia an list of links to each country's article without further content, similar to an index page. SiBr4 (talk) 10:33, 23 August 2014 (UTC)
I don't know why the reader would want that. I believe that means that the reader would see the bottom of Internet in Yemen (or any Asian country), see "Internet in Asia", click it, and get the same result he would get by clicking "show". Art LaPella (talk) 22:54, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

I'm afraid this can't be accomplished. The article on Royal Navy of Oman calls the template by

Individually setting/removing entries

@Codename Lisa: Instead of using parser functions to alter the link for Macau for for a specific topic within this general template, would it be a better idea to add the functionality in {{Europe topic}} of individually changing or removing links to the other continent-topic templates as well? That way the link to Macau can be easily changed within {{Capitals in Asia}} instead of here. SiBr4 (talk) 10:30, 30 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi. I don't know. I am not active in this area, so I wouldn't know whether doing this is a waste of time and rendering performance or actually useful. For time being, I assume it safe to say implementing it for Macau alone would be nice. Best regards, Codename Lisa (talk) 01:08, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
It just seems odd to me that the Europe template has several options that not all of the other continents have – the country-specific parameters, the |image= parameter (shared with the Asia template) and the |article= parameter. Adding these options to all templates would make them consistent. SiBr4 (talk) 20:41, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
I think this is a good idea. If you have the time to sandbox and test these changes, I will happily deploy. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:44, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

Can anyone change this into "UN members"? This can make sure there are less disbutes. --Owennson (talk) 07:50, 26 May 2015 (UTC)

I'm not too sure about changing the header of the first group from "sovereign states" to "UN members" in the continent-topic templates (1 2 3 4). Vatican City is now listed as a UN member in Template:Europe topic, which it isn't. SiBr4 (talk) 15:43, 26 May 2015 (UTC)
@Owennson: I have reverted your changes to these templates. Please be sure to establish consensus before changing such widely used templates. I like your idea of reducing the disputes about which countries may be sovereign or not, but unilateral changes are probably going to cause an equal amount of drama. And there are other things that need to be considered: e.g. the status of the Vatican, or the general structure of these templates. If we have a list of UN members, how does the section of "states with limited recognition" and "dependencies" fit into it? A logical sorting would be "UN members" vs "Non-UN-members". There are a lot of wikilinks in this area without a target page to land upon. And guessing after a small talk with a host at the teahouse I am submitting this request to have these links removed since this page has been flagged for this problem in the past (2008) and I for being a regular user, cannot correct them myself. This area seems to be too old for these links to soon all have a page to target so could this please be resolved? Thank you so much for at least reading my request! CoolInu43 (talk) 22:12, 11 July 2015 (UTC) CoolInu43 (talk) 22:12, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

This template has no facility to omit red links. You can individually hide red links by specifying a two-letter country code as blank, e.g. |TR=. If this must be done for a large number of links, you'd be better of wrapping the template in another template. Alakzi (talk) 22:24, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

Template-protected edit request on 12 July 2015

The "Bangladesh" in this template directs to the page List of cities in Bangladesh. However, that page is merely a redirect to List of cities and towns in Bangladesh. Due to this, the template that appears in the cities and towns page does not show "Bangladesh" bold and unlinked.

What I would request is that the "Bangladesh" on the template be linked to the cities and towns page directly (instead of being linked to the redirect page). I know little about editing on templates and I am quite sure you know how to get it done but I still created a sample of how I would like it on the template sandbox. My edit there is a bit of an eyesore, but I believe an eyesore is better kept in the source than in actual articles and templates. Rihaz (Talk to meStuff I didGlobal Info) 17:15, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

This is a general template that is used for many other topics than lists of cities. Use |BD=List of cities and towns in Bangladesh when using the navbox to change the link; you can do this in a wrapper template and then use that in each "List of cities in ..." article. SiBr4 (talk) 17:18, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

Note: I sought to change the template showing "Land reform in Asia" which displays at Land Bank of the Philippines and elsewhere. But I clicked to edit it, I am brought to editing the "Asia topic" template. If this request should be put elsewhere, pls. do let me know. --doncram

Because a link target (Land reform in Vietnam) has been changed to a disambiguation page, this template should be updated. Change from the current Vietnam line:

to two lines, one for Land reform in North Vietnam and one for Land reform in South Vietnam.

By the way, I don't see why this template should be under edit protection since 2008. Time to take protection off. It could be restored if necessary, but there is no reason to expect rampant vandalism. --doncram 04:20, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

doncram 04:20, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

This issue cannot be solved by editing {{Asia topic}}. One solution would be to write a special-purpose navbox {{Land reform in Asia}}, which could also reduce the clutter by listing only the six countries for which there is a working link. Also I think Land reform in Vietnam is a set index article not a disambiguation page, and I have tagged it thus.
If you look through this talk page and its archives, you'll see many rejected edit requests from editors who have misunderstood the purpose of the template or who have a political point to make. So I don't think reducing the protection would be a good idea. You could ask at WP:RFPU, of course. -- John of Reading (talk) 05:01, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for your kind and helpful response. I obviously did not understand how template:Asia topic worked. After your response and my reading further in Asia topic's documentation, I then considered creating a separate nav template for Land reform in Asia, and taking that entirely out of the {{Asia topic}} system. But I like your solution to convert the dab page Land reform in Vietnam to a set index article, which can and should be developed a bit. It is better to have just one navlink to Vietnam and to explain the past pre-unification land reform efforts in one place where ancient plus post-reunification land reform efforts can be described, too. That's great, thank you! And your edit already has taken Land reform in Vietnam off a worklist of disambiguation pages having links that seemed especially problematic, and had not been resolved despite being identified as a problem for 2 or more months. The |CN=article name parameter can be used to change the link there, though with only three blue links, and zero in the Europe template below it, the navboxes may as well be removed from the article. Please replace Nagorno-Karabakh with Artsakh as the state officially changed its name and the main Wikipedia page already change the name to the Republic of Artsakh. Growupon (talk) 02:51, 16 August 2017 (UTC)

Done, and thank you very much, Growupon, for the update!  Paine Ellsworth  put'r there  11:11, 18 August 2017 (UTC)
Paine Ellsworth, could you please make sure that the article "the" can be present in the article titles that the templates will provide. Thank you. --Growupon (talk) 19:17, 18 August 2017 (UTC)
The definite article "the" has been restored; however, we should note that the various subordinate articles, such as Economy of the Republic of Artsakh, as well as the main article, Republic of Artsakh do not really conform to the article naming policy at WP:CONCISE ("Republic of Artsakh" should be "Artsakh" with the full name noted in the lead in boldface type). That means that those titles should be renamed and this template edited accordingly.  Paine Ellsworth  put'r there  15:19, 19 August 2017 (UTC)
To editor Andrewa: since you closed the recent RM at Talk:Republic of Artsakh, it would be helpful to hear your thoughts on this. One editor there asked about renaming to just "Artsakh", and another advised to make that a dab page (see also Artsakh (disambiguation)). At present, it appears that Artsakh is a PTopic redirect.  Paine Ellsworth  put'r there  16:43, 19 August 2017 (UTC)
Since you ask, my immediate reaction is that Artsakh would be the best name for the article now at Republic of Artsakh (where I moved it according to the RM consensus I assessed). And yes, Golbez suggested this there in a comment, and it is as you say currently a redirect there anyway, so presumably as a primary redirect. But yes, I also note that AjaxSmack commented that "Artsakh"... should probably be a disambiguation page. If you wish to pursue this I guess the first thing is to see what arguments they would each advance. Andrewa (talk) 02:17, 20 August 2017 (UTC)
I have opened a Move Request discussion regarding this at Talk:Artsakh (disambiguation). —  AjaxSmack  02:44, 20 August 2017 (UTC)
Thank you both for responding! Not sure myself, now that you mention it, that there actually is a primary topic for the Artsakh title. Guess we'll see soon enough.  Paine Ellsworth  put'r there  07:45, 20 August 2017 (UTC)

Palestine

I wonder under what criteria is Palestine included in states with limited recognition. Because although it's true that Palestine is such a case, same can be said about Israel and China. The three countries are recognized by most UN members, but not for all. And I have nothing against Israel or China, just in case, I just think we have to be fair and give the same treatment to all states. --Dereck Camacho (talk) 07:51, 11 October 2017 (UTC)

PD: In any case I would suggest to place Palestine up, in the same area where China and Israel are, not to put China and Israel in the unrecognized section. --Dereck Camacho (talk) 07:52, 11 October 2017 (UTC)

In Kuwait Army and List of armies by country, this template calls Army of Vietnam, which is a DAB page. It should call People's Army of Vietnam. Narky Blert (talk) 14:16, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

The link can be changed using |VI= |VN=People's Army of Vietnam. The template may as well be replaced with {{Military of Asia}} in those articles, though, for consistency with all other Asian army articles as well as to avoid redirects. SiBr4 (talk) 16:15, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
@SiBr4: I have precisely no interest whatsoever in fixing obscure complex templates which create problems for DABfixers like me. I know how to fix the best part of 20 cute templates which create problems which are picked up by User:DPL bot. This template still calls that DAB page. Please, fix this problem. Your template, your problem. This is not the first time I have encountered a to me insoluble problem in a "Continent topic" template which has wasted my time. It is also not the first time I have received an answer which did not address the problems created by such a template.
It's all about the readers. Narky Blert (talk) 22:05, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
There's no need for or even use in editing the template itself, as the big orange box at the top of this talk page points out. This is not a template about armies; it can link to any "X of country" articles and many other formats, so any problematic links should be fixed in the articles that use the template, like this. SiBr4 (talk) 10:21, 18 July 2018 (UTC)

Edit request

The transcluded template {{i2c}} is a redirect to {{iso2country}}. Although the cost of a single redirect is trivial, in this case (and in the other "Continent topic" templates too) it occurs multiple times within a template that's itself transcluded on thousands of pages; this means that the redirect has to be followed many times whenever any of those thousands of pages is viewed. That adds up to a significant unnecessary overhead. I therefore suggest that the code is changed to invoke {{iso2country}} directly. (The same change has already been made to {{Europe topic}}). Colonies Chris (talk) 09:26, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

  1. The template includes China (PRC) but not Taiwan (ROC).
  2. In Aadhaar and National Identity Card (Nepal), this template calls the DAB page National identity cards in China. User:DPL bot is complaining about the WP:INTDABLINK error and rightly so - the DAB page has entries for two different countries and for two different Special Administrative Regions of the PRC. Narky Blert (talk) 10:44, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
Narky Blert,
  1. Wrong. Taiwan is in the second section, "States with limited recognition".
  2. That looks like a problem with the articles, not the template. Created National identity cards in Taiwan as a redir to National Identification Card (Republic of China) and redirected National identity cards in China to Resident Identity Card. Problem sorted. Cabayi (talk) 11:22, 16 December 2018 (UTC)

  • Oppose: In addition to not being sovereign states, they are not "states with limited recognition" or "dependencies and other territories", so they don't fit in any of the existing boxes in the template. There are loads of autonomous administrative divisions in the world, and I don't see a case for exception here. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 08:51, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
  • Support There is an interesting parallel with Ukraine and Europe. Template:Europe_topic contains Ukraine. Ukraine, like Tibet, has a history as an independent country, but a portion of it has been subsumed within another political entity. This however doesn't affect its geographical location. Ukraine is still in Europe. Practically, Tibet is a known entity which is located in Asia. Yes, there is presently, like Ukraine, a disagreement about who controls it, but it's still in Asia. I think it should be included because people are going to be wanting to answer the question "Is Tibet in Asia?". Some won't know anything at all about the political situation so won't think to look up China to find the answer. Morgan Leigh | Talk 06:59, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
What does that have to do with any of this? Ukraine is a sovereign country, not an autonomous region, a part of which is occupied by a foreign power. A comparable situation would be that this template includes Syria, even though Israel occupies the Golan. Whether an entity is an autonomous region or a sovereign country part of which is occupied is a totally different thing. Furthermore, for the question "Is Tibet in Asia?" people should read the encyclopedia article Tibet, not look for this template at say, at the bottom of Agriculture in Oman#References
But more importantly, why are we entertaining an RFC that was started by a blocked sock without any prior discussion? – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 15:01, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
  • Oppose They are autonomous regions within a country and they're not currently recognized as independent states by other nations either (Tibet even has the following reference in its article: Tibet, although enjoying independence at certain periods of its history, had never been recognised by any single foreign power as an independent state.). So they don't fit in the first two template boxes. They're also not dependencies nor special administrative regions unlike Hong Kong and Macau which have their own executive, legislative, and judicial branches, so they don't fit into the last box. There are also several other autonomous regions that would need to be added in a new box, but it doesn't seem to be the right addition to this template. — MarkH21 (talk) 18:53, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
  • Oppose I'm not even sure why this is a discussion. Whether you agree with it or not, these are both part of China. Having lived in Asia for 15 years, the arguments presented in support (religious and ethnic diversity, past history as a separate state) could be applied with far greater justification to Thailand (southern provinces), Malaysia (Pennisular v Borneo), Indonesia (Aceh, Bali, Irian Jaya, Moluccas), the Philippines (Mindanao), Myanmar (Kachin, Karen, Karenni, Shan etc etc).Robinvp11 (talk) 10:03, 30 March 2019 (UTC)

Delete Borders of Asia NavBox

Generic 'border of X' pages are really not that useful - their very nature, if taken to its logical conclusion, would mean repeated info on separate pages, and with a handful of exceptions (e.g. Borders of Israel) these Wiki pages are terrible. Most borders now have an individual page (See Category:International borders), so I would recommend deleting this (almost entirely red-linked) NavBox of pages that will never be created. Personally I'd go further and split up the few pages that do exist into their component individual binary borders.WisDom-UK (talk) 22:56, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

Already done An editor fixed this problem by creating Cinema of the State of Palestine as a redirect. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:49, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

I request the non-written article links be removed from the template, as anyone hasn't even made an article in them. There are only few ones like Britons in China, Britons in Egypt, Britons in Japan, British people in Pakistan, Britons in Turkey, Britons in UAE and Britons in Hong Kong. Please delete the rest, or initiate to create them.

(If still not sure of which template I am talking about, then it is this one:

) Utkarsh555 (talk) 17:54, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

Not done for now: That's not how this template works. As far as I can tell, the parameter value "Britons in" exists only in British people in Pakistan, so you could boldly remove it from that article with the rationale you have provided here and see if anyone objects. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:40, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
Edited to add: It looks like I missed a redirect. There are at least six articles that use the navbox in this form. Six blue links is enough for a navbox, even though there are a lot of red links. If you like, you could start a larger discussion about whether this and similar topic templates should, in general, hide red links. I think that you will meet with significant resistance; see Wikipedia:Red link. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:50, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

If the page doesn't exist, then just remove it. Hypersonic man 11 (talk) 11:08, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

I'm not sure which page you refer to, but this is a default flexible template and pages sometimes don't exist for each country. CMD (talk) 11:19, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

Edit Request

Please edit the topic templates to read "Names of European states and territories" and "Names of Asian states and territories" respectively. Thank you! 2001:B07:6469:3006:2833:F11F:CA16:5B66 (talk) 12:35, 2 April 2022 (UTC)

@IAmChaos:  Not done: this is the talk page for discussing improvements to the template {{Asia topic}}. Please make your request at the talk page for the article concerned. The edit required at Name of Armenia#External links is to alter
{{Asia topic|Name of}}
{{Europe topic|Name of}}
to
{{Asia topic|Name of|title=[[Name of Asia|Names of Asian states and territories]]}}
{{Europe topic|Name of|title=[[Name of Europe|Names of European states and territories]]}}

Since when

Since when is Egypt part of Asia? Is it not part of Africa? Peter Horn User talk 01:01, 11 April 2022 (UTC)

It's a good thing we have the world's biggest encyclopedia to tell us where Egypt is. – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:49, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
If Peter Horn is actually asking about which times in history Egypt was part of both Africa and Asia, this is not the right talk page for that thorny issue. Control/occupation of the Sinai Peninsula, which is in Asia, has changed many times over the past couple of centuries. – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:58, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
The original border between Africa and Asia was the Nile, so the answer to "since when" is "since the concepts were invented". CMD (talk) 04:18, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
@Chipmunkdavis: How far up the Nile River? Until the same latitude as the tip of the Red Sea? Peter Horn User talk 16:45, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
This was the ancient Greek period, so I don't think they had that mapped. CMD (talk) 17:39, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
There is plenty on this matter in the archives of this page. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:50, 11 April 2022 (UTC)

Remove "British Indian Ocean Territory" as the page doesn't exist —ÐW-🇺🇦(T·C) 17:27, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

Not done: British Indian Ocean Territory certainly exists as a page. On the general point though, something being a WP:REDLINK is not a reason by itself for removal. CMD (talk) 18:17, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

Fix the obvious errors here by removing Cyprus (which, however you want to define it, is not in Asia; but in the middle of the Mediterranean...) and Egypt (which is very much in Africa) RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 16:34, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

Not done: This series of templates deliberately takes wide definitions, echoing the continent lists where such a formula was adopted to reduce disputes. CMD (talk) 16:37, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
@Chipmunkdavis: I know of no such "wide definition" which puts an island in the middle of the Mediterranean sea as being "in Asia"... Nor do I know of a definition of Asia which stretches beyond the Suez. RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 16:47, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
Cyprus is in the East of the Mediterranean, so far that it is East of the aforementioned Suez. I'm also unsure what the overall conclusion of that statement is meant to be. As for Suez, there's nothing here which states Asia stretches past it. CMD (talk) 16:50, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
Cyprus is more due north of the Suez (which is usually considered the boundary between Africa and Asia, and then Europe/Asia is along the coast of the Mediterranean, not through the middle of it) than east of it. RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 16:58, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
The idea of continents having their borders along coastlines, and of the Mediterranean being entirely "in Europe" (so to speak), do not match sources I've seen. CMD (talk) 17:03, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
I'm not sure why people bring these unsourced arguments to this template talk page instead of to the talk pages for the countries. Please see Cyprus#Geography and the sources linked from there. As for Egypt, see the discussion above, along with Egypt. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:06, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

Add new tab

Would it be a good idea to add in a new 'tab' called "Regional". And include the existing articles -> Islam in Southeast Asia and Islam in South Asia. After rechecking, I'm not sure why the 'Islam in Asia' template suddenly redirected to this 'Asia' template? My question was for the former but I re-tried and can't reach it. Danial Bass (talk) 00:08, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

That is because this is a general wrapper template, so the "Islam in Asia" template is just all the entries here with "Islam in" automatically applied as a prefix. To add regional links would need the creation of a new dedicated template. CMD (talk) 02:03, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the info CMB Danial Bass (talk) 10:21, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

Please correct the title to "Lists of hospitals in Asia", because "List of hospitals in Asia" is syntactically incorrect due to number (there are a couple of dozen lists linked through this template). Thanks. Julietdeltalima (talk) 16:38, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

Not done for now: The documentation shows a couple of ways to work around this edge case. One is to create a template like {{List of football stadiums in Asia}} and use that in articles instead of {{Asia topic}}. Another is to edit each affected article like this. It's probably better to make the template and then put the new template in the articles; if you're going to edit the articles anyway, make it so that any changes to the new template only need to be made in one place. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:30, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

Hello, Please check the dablinks for nuclear energy in Iran as it is currently directed to a disambiguated link. Thank you! ColRad85 (talk) 09:09, 23 November 2022 (UTC)

Not done: This is a general template, it doesn't link to specific pages for each entry. If disambiguation pages are the best item to land on, they are fine as links here. CMD (talk) 09:19, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
Hi, thank you for your reply.
One link on the disambiguation page, Nuclear program of Iran, is a more direct source to what is shown on the template for other countries; while the other link directs users to a nuclear power plant in Iran, Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant. Would the nuclear program page be a better link? The page for the power plant can also be found on the nuclear program of Iran page. ColRad85 (talk) 06:34, 26 November 2022 (UTC)

Currently Nuclear Energy in Iran directs to a disambiguation page. I'd like to propose changing the link for Iran to Nuclear program of Iran Gabulousity (talk) 03:03, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{Edit template-protected}} template. Pinging Tamzin, who tagged that page saying that it should be turned into an article, which would be the elegant resolution for this request. It sounds like Gabulousity is proposing that the primary topic for Nuclear energy in Iran is Nuclear program of Iran, which I think means that the former should redirect to the latter. That would also resolve this issue. In any event, I don't think the resolution to this issue lies within the realm of this template. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:27, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

Please adjust links for Korea to Minorities in Korea (North Korea, South Korea) or such, bypassing redirects and linking both the top Korean and subarticles for NK/SK. (Creating SK right now). Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 05:57, 19 September 2023 (UTC)
