New charts

If anyone wants to recommend a new chart, ask on here.
Michael Jester (Talk) 16:57, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Naming

Hey! I consider that, in the need to avoid confusion with single charts, instead of writing in the output "Spain (PROMUSICAE)", it should be written as "Spanish Albums Chart (PROMUSICAE)" or just "Spanish Albums Chart". It would be better and follow the standard stablished on Wikipedia for albums. --Hahc21 [TALK][CONTRIBS] 17:53, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

EPs

There really should be no need to develop an EP chart. Depending on the country, they are simply classified as either "albums" or "singles" and chart accordingly. They can then just use the appropriate template. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 08:41, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

I agree with you. I just copied-pasted what the singlechart said. I've been watching this template and doing maintenance when needed, as well as adding/modifying charts. Thanks for the comment. --Hahc21 [TALK][CONTRIBS] 06:01, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Category

I don't think we need a category to categorize each page that uses this template. That's what the "what links here" function is for. And even if we do need it, Category:Albumchart is a horrible name for it. At the very least, the category should be a hidden, administrative category. Good Ol’factory (talk) 02:44, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

It is supposed to be a hidden category. And remember Wikipedie is not what you like or not like, that thought cannot drive your actions. Also, naming is not a matter of likenees but usage. --Hahc21 [TALK][CONTRIBS] 02:48, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
How does this improve on the "what links here" function? It seems to me to be a solution in search of a problem. (As of right now, it is not a hidden category.) Good Ol’factory (talk) 02:51, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
I know it is not a hidden category, but it should be, i know. I haven't asked for it to be hidden yet. This improves the "what links here" button when you have +4000 articles using the template and you want to track them an categorize them to keep an order, which such button doesn't provide. --Hahc21 [TALK][CONTRIBS] 02:54, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
Ok, now it is a hidden category =). --Hahc21 [TALK][CONTRIBS] 02:55, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
So the sole benefit is that is alphabetizes the articles that use the template? This doesn't seem to me to be a very common use of categories. What category scheme does this fit into? What is (or are) the appropriate parent category(ies) for the category? Good Ol’factory (talk) 02:57, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
It is a maintenance category that is not supposed to be used by readers. It does not need parent categories since "it groups articles by status rather than content." it is an administration category. --Hahc21 [TALK][CONTRIBS] 03:00, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Before we continue with the discussion, i'd like to thank you. This discussion gives me (or us) feedback about the most suitable way to use and mantain articles using a Template. Also, as i want the template to work at its best, it provides me feedback on how to reach that status. --Hahc21 [TALK][CONTRIBS] 03:03, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

I know what a hidden, administrative category is for in general—you don't have to explain that to me. But my questions were what category scheme this is part of? It doesn't have any parent categories presently—is there any general scheme for administrative categories that this is a part of, or are Category:Albumchart and Category:Singlechart alone in categorizing articles this way? Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:38, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
I see that the category has been nominated for discussion, so I suppose that is the best place for comments about the category for the time being. Good Ol’factory (talk) 21:25, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Convention

Well, as i've now taken care of the Template, i chose the convention name to be like this:

 • (Country name)(Other definite) Albums (Certification/Charts Entity)

As an example:

--Hahc21 [TALK][CONTRIBS] 23:19, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

For the Mexican charts, it should be linked to Top 100 Mexico, not AMPROFON. Erick (talk) 02:40, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
I'll take care of it, Thanks. --Hahc21 [TALK][CONTRIBS] 04:57, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

There's another fix that needs to be done and it involves the Tropical Albums. For some unknown reason, Billboard messed up the Tropical Albums. Tropical Albums before the week of July 5, 2003 are instead shown on the Tropical Songs chart. Erick (talk) 22:04, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

o.0. Let me see. —Hahc21 15:42, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

Canadian Albums

I would like to know what the reason was behind the display name for Top Canadian Albums. It seems like the display name should be "Canadian Albums (Billboard)" instead of "US Canadian Albums (Billboard)" because the latter seems unnecessarily confusing and it makes the table harder to sort alphabetically. Rock'N'More (talk) 20:06, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

I will fix it. Thanks. — ΛΧΣ21 23:44, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

Multi reference support

Hi,

The multi-reference support for the Scottish album chart doesn't seem to work. See Glassheart as an example. — Lil_niquℇ 1 [talk] 18:41, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

Naming the charts

I find the naming of the charts very awkward and hard to read. I'd like to suggest the charts to be re-named as follows:

Argentinian Albums Chart
Austrian Albums Chart
Australian Albums Chart
Belgian Albums Chart (Flanders)
Belgian Albums Chart (Wallonia)
Brazilian Albums Chart
.
.
.

This is the established naming practice in all Wikipedia album articles. I think including the name of the chart in parentheses only adds unnecessary clutter to articles. Samsonite Man (talk) 16:49, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

That is an old standard that still prevails in some articles. The new standard is what it is showcased in the template; why? because several countries have more than one chart publisher (check the UK or Japan) and the that format above becomes useless. Regards. — ΛΧΣ21 16:53, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

Billboard.com

This was brought up at Template talk:Singlechart, so I decided to bring it up here too. Erick (talk) 19:28, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

BillboardChristian broken?

If I use it correctly it should link to chart chart?f=310 but it is linked instead to chart?f=406. If I change the chart in the template from "chart=Christian & Gospel Albums" to "chart=Christian Albums", which is the correct title, I get the right link. I hope I didn't damage other articles requiring the Christian & Gospel Albums chart. Walter Görlitz (talk) 22:15, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

The error was introduced here: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Albumchart&diff=537665736&oldid=536739281 Walter Görlitz (talk) 22:18, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

UK Christian chart

I wonder if we could get someone to add the UK Christian & Gospel chart to the template.HotHat (talk) 18:20, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

Billboard Jazz broken?

I've recently added the template to the All Over the Place (Mike Stern album) article. The link to the Heatseekers chart works fine, but the link for Jazz chart leads to http://www.billboard.com/artist/311226/Mike+Stern/chart?f=921, while the Jazz chart for this artist is at http://www.billboard.com/artist/311226/Mike+Stern/chart?f=901 – so the problem is with one digit (921 instead of 901). — Mayast (talk) 12:00, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

According to BillboardChartNum there were two different index numbers for the Jazz Albums chart: 901 and 921. And there seems to be a general problem with certain numbers that are no longer verifiable (see Template talk:BillboardChartNum). I've now disabled the Jazz No. 921 so the ChartNum template will default to 901 for Jazz. The disclaimer in the template documentation seems to be spot on: "As is usual with Billboard, things are messy." De728631 (talk) 16:47, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

Finland2

I'd like to propose adding "Finland2", this time with links to the website finnishcharts.com, which is run by Hung Medien. There are often problems with links to ifpi.fi, most recently in the The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2 article. — Mayast (talk) 18:39, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

Or the ifpi.fi could use "year" and "week" parameters, instead of "artist" and "album". Links would work better, for example, this is the link for the lastest chart (year 2013, week 40): www.ifpi.fi/tilastot/virallinen-lista/albumit/2013/40. I tried different combinations of writing the album title of the Timberlake album, mentioned above, and the slash in the url seems to be breaking down the link. With years and weeks that wouldn't happen. — Mayast (talk) 18:45, 8 October 2013 (UTC)
This is not a template failure. Please remember that the parameters are case sensitive and that you have to add escape characters in this case to match the actual url. And as has been mentioned in the template documentation, the album name on the chart page may differ from the Wikipedia article. So before adding the parameters to the albumschart template you might want to check the actual website for its url.
produces
Finnish Albums (Suomen virallinen lista)[1] 21

where the link is alright. As to Finnishcharts.com, I for one am reluctant to use the Hung Medien sites because I've found more than once that they're not comprehensive. So adding Finland2 to the template should have a minimum level of consensus. De728631 (talk) 19:37, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
The reflist has been moved downwards on this page in order to show the references of multiple threads. De728631 (talk) 15:45, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

Polish albums - minor modification (language version)

Can we please change the language version in the link to the chart? It's a very simple operation.
For example, the reference for the last week's issue of the Polish chart http://olis.onyx.pl/listy/index.asp?idlisty=865 when using the template looks like this:

"Oficjalna lista sprzedaży :: OLIS - Official Retail Sales Chart" (In Polish). OLiS. Polish Society of the Phonographic Industry. Retrieved 24 May 2014.

But there is also an English language version of the OLiS website, all we need to do is just add "lang=en" parameter to the URL: http://olis.onyx.pl/listy/index.asp?idlisty=865&lang=en
And then we could remove the "(In Polish)" part from the reference. — Mayast (talk) 23:20, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

Thank you for pointing this out. I have now changed the code so it displays the following:
Polish Albums (ZPAV)[2] 18

PS: Don't get confused by the Finnish link. That's from another thread on this page. De728631 (talk) 15:45, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, I know that thread ;) Thanks a lot, it looks much better now :) Mayast (talk) 19:09, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

UK Rock & Metal

Can someone please also add UK Rock & Metal chart? The format would be the same as with other UK charts, eg. UKR&B and UKCountry, so it would use artist and date. Here's the latest issue: http://www.officialcharts.com/archive-chart/_/11/2014-06-28/Mayast (talk) 18:43, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

The German charts have changed the domain name, and unfortunately the links aren't redirected to the new one correctly. I haven't checked all the chart names for Germany, just Germany3, but here's an example: the link generated by the template for Ghost Stories is http://www.charts.de/album.asp?artist=Coldplay&title=Ghost+Stories&cat=a&country=de, while the correct URL is now http://www.officialcharts.de/album.asp?artist=Coldplay&title=Ghost+Stories&cat=a&country=de. Looks like a simple modification. What's funny is that other Hung Medien websites still link to the previous domain name, as well. — Mayast (talk) 20:14, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

Looks like the Germany/musicline.de links are untouched, but Germany2/charts.de also need to be corrected. Mayast (talk) 20:56, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
BTW, maybe we could add another note for Germany2 that only top 5 positions are displayed for free, and access to the full chart requires premium subscription? —Mayast (talk) 21:03, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
I have now updated the German links reflecting recent changes in that business. Prominently, Media Control GfK International had to change its name and thus the online appearance and designation of the charts has also been changed. I'm still at a loss whether to move Media Control Charts, but that should be discussed over there.
Btw, I'm getting the first 15 weekly positions for free. De728631 (talk) 19:30, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
That's interesting, I have 5 and then there is "Mehr Positionen gibt's im Premiumbereich! Schon ab 2,99 €!" :) Anyway, thanks for the update! Mayast (talk) 19:57, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

Broken template

On Turn_It_Up_(Josh_Thompson_album), can someone tell me why a random redlink is showing up in the Country Albums usage? I have no idea what could've gone wrong in the coding. Ten Pound Hammer(What did I screw up now?) 20:49, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

For some reason I wasn't able to figure out, the Country Albums entry still needs the |artistid parameter while Billboard Top 200 seems to be working without that. I have now fixed the code in Turn It Up (Josh Thompson album). De728631 (talk) 21:11, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

Billboard publisher

This is hardcoded as Prometheus Global Media. There are two problems with this. First of all, it has no value in a reference - anyone trying to check the reference will get no help from knowing the publisher - only the publication name is useful. And secondly, for anything earlier than 2010, it's wrong. From 2009–10 Billboard was published by E5 Global Media, before that by Nielsen Business Media and before that by VNU, and before that by Billboard Publications. So I suggest removing the publisher from Billboard-related charts altogether. (And the guidelines for citations and for the cite journal template recommend not specifying the publisher for periodicals). Colonies Chris (talk) 21:24, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

The Billboard charts linked are all published by Prometheus Global Media following the website's revamp in 2012. So yeah, Prometheus is the correct publisher. And you need to stop edit warring else a block is imminent. —Indian:BIO [ ChitChat ] 19:01, 15 December 2014 (UTC)
Chris's reasoning looks to be very sound. Tony (talk) 13:35, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
@IndianBio: The purpose of references is to allow fact checking. In what way is knowing that the current website is published by PGM going to be in any way helpful to someone checking a chart reference? Since the guidelines for such references recommend against specifying publisher (for the very good reason that it has no value), you need to have a clear reason to insist on doing things differently. You haven't even attempted to provide a reason. And learn to behave civilly: any more threats and you'll find yourself at ANI. Colonies Chris (talk) 13:44, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
Can you point at a guideline that recommends against providing a publisher for periodicals? That seems like peculiar guidance, indeed. It wouldn't be hard to make the publisher variable based on the chart date (when the date is provide), but I don't see any particular value to removing the publisher entirely.—Kww(talk) 14:13, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
See links above, in my original post. Here's a (partial) quote:

publisher: Name of publisher; may be wikilinked if relevant. ... Not normally used for periodicals.

(emphasis added). Why provide (and wikilink) the publisher when it has no value? It doesn't help anyone who's checking a reference. There was never a good reason to have it in the template at all. Colonies Chris (talk) 16:48, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
Due to the current edit war I have now fully protected the template. Please establish consensus here instead of reverting back and forth (this advice goes to both IndianBio and Colonies Chris). De728631 (talk) 14:37, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
There is no edit war. This template has been stable since yesterday, awaiting the outcome of a discussion that I started last week, and acted on (no objections having been received) in good faith yesterday. IndianBio has not bothered even to provide a reason for reverting my changes, except for insisting that they needed to be discussed on the talk page, despite the fact I had already initiated exactly that discussion the best part of a week ago, and I had noted that fact in my edit summary. Colonies Chris (talk) 16:48, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
Well, edit warring doesn't only start after anyone's third revert and yesterday's edit history of the template was less than stable. Your proposal made on 11 December didn't meet any opposition (or not any comment at all to be exact) so I can see how you eventually removed the publisher, but once IndianBio reverted you, the in-depth discussion should have begun here. I'll happily remove the full protection if both of you agree to leave the |publisher= alone until consensus has been reached. De728631 (talk) 18:19, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

Error tracking proposed for invalid artists

An error tracking category for invalid artists is proposed in this discussion. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:30, 22 January 2016 (UTC)

Error tracking needed for missing required parameters

Here's a project for someone with a lot of free time: many of these charts require certain parameters, and if those parameter are not present, the rendering and the URLs do not work correctly. Add tests to the template to emit a tracking category like "Albumchart missing required parameter".

For example, using "UK" without an "artist" parameter results in a non-working URL. – Jonesey95 (talk) 06:33, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

IrishCharts.com

Hi I just tried to use Ireland2 chart identifier and the resultant reference points to a dead site.

LenTheWhiteCat 08:47, 4 December 2015 (UTC)

Seems like it should be http://www.irishcharts.ie or http://irish-charts.com/ rather than http://www.irishcharts.com ? Hzh (talk) 23:07, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
http://irish-charts.com does not appear to have Irish chart info, so probably no point in changing it. Hzh (talk) 23:37, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
OK, I've decided to change the URL even though the http://irish-charts.com no longer gives Irish chart ranking due to cost. Hzh (talk) 12:10, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

They used to have weekly charts as can be seen on archive.org. That said, the Wayback Machine there stopped archiving this particular server in 2013, so obviously the Argentine system was changed a long time ago. De728631 (talk) 17:54, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

Billboard World Albums

The link doesn't take it to the right chart, or are there more than one? I was using the template for the album chart here at Celtic Woman: Destiny, and it gives the Billboard site here (which has no chart entry), rather than here (which has). Can someone fix this? Hzh (talk) 22:51, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

Seems like to get the the right page you need to use "World Albums C" according to Template:BillboardChartNum. No sure if I want to change it here given that I'm not sure if that chart number is used for all the World Albums entries, and if someone has a clearer idea what to do, please help. Hzh (talk) 12:59, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
I've just checked a dozen or so pages that have the link, and it seems that the correct chart number should be 339 (World Albums C) not 466 (World Albums). Maybe it should be changed to World Albums C, unless others have reasons why it should not be changed. Hzh (talk) 14:00, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
OK, I've decided to change it to "World Albums C" and see what happens. If anyone thinks that this is a bad idea, then by all means revert it. Hzh (talk) 15:38, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

Some recent errors

 1. Can somebody please change the Germany3 parameter, which is not working anymore, to http://www.offiziellecharts.de/ ? The search link displayed will be https://www.offiziellecharts.de/suche?artist_search=Eric%20Clapton&do_search=do for the parameter artist=Eric Clapton, or https://www.offiziellecharts.de/suche?artist_search=Slowhand&do_search=do for album=Slowhand. Both together do not work. So if artist= is filled, it should use the artist parameter as link insertion, otherwise the one for the album title.
 2. Germany2 and GermanyComp have to be changed, as the weekly charts cannot be referenced by date anymore. Instead, there has to be inserted an ID. For example: https://www.offiziellecharts.de/charts/compilation/for-date-1031176800000 and https://www.offiziellecharts.de/charts/single/for-date-1455145200000
 3. Ireland2 ist not working anymore as all info from the site was deleted for Ireland.
 4. Greece and Mexico are not working anymore, as the sites have been shut down, but by adding a necessary archiving parameter, they could still be used.
 5. How to search for all articles using a specific parameter (e.g. Germany2 or Ireland2) of the template? --Ali1610 (talk) 13:58, 5 October 2016 (UTC)
Offizielle Charts recently revamped their website, which is why the old links no longer work. The problem is that all the editors who did the original coding have left Wikipedia and few people now watch these projects to make the necessary updates. I tried out the template at Of Dirt and Grace: Live from the Land, but it doesn't seem to work either. Do you think that it might be the chart in general? FanofMusic (Talk to Me!) 18:08, 16 October 2016 (UTC)

Agnetha Fältskog name problem.

I don't know what happens, but it is impossible to put Agnetha's name and go to the right link of the chart page, I tried to put only Agnetha, or put the name without the "¨", but always go to a page that says no found... I think the probleam is with the ¨ that her name has. Can someone help me?! See here: Wrap Your Arms Around Me (song).--88marcus (talk) 04:37, 22 October 2016 (UTC)

I edited your link, so it goes to the article page I think you are talking about. But I'm puzzled by what you mean - the links in the chart table all appear to go the the right page to show the chart history in each country. Could you please give an example? Sorry Marcus, you are absolutely correct... and yes, I think the character "ä" is causing the problem. Richard3120 (talk) 14:28, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
Wikipedia is trying to encode the link in UTF-8 (so ä becomes %C3%A4), but the Hung database uses another format, Windows-1252, so the ä has to become %E4 to work. But you can't fix it manually, as this also means inserting a % into the link will result in being encoded to %25. So I know whatis wrong, but I don't now how to fix this. --Ali1610 (talk) 15:26, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
Thank you!--88marcus (talk) 17:35, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation, Ali. I'll try and find an editor who can correct this. Richard3120 (talk) 17:59, 22 October 2016 (UTC)

It works with the album charts, see: Wrap Your Arms Around Me--88marcus (talk) 18:18, 22 October 2016 (UTC)

It doesn't. This page is not using the template, the links are referenced manually. --Ali1610 (talk) 18:22, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
Oh yes, sorry. I forgot I did that there!!--88marcus (talk) 19:10, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
This results from the magic word being used in the album charts template as well as in single chart. As far as I can see there is no automated way to change the encoding to Windows-1252. @Frietjes: Do you know a quick way to encode special characters accordingly? De728631 (talk) 22:09, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
I asked something similar in Wikipedia talk:Lua/Archive 5#Historical_URL_encoding. --Ali1610 (talk) 23:20, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
De728631, basically, you want different url encoding. the encoding generated by urlencode is UTF-8. you want windows-1252. I could make a LUA module that does windows-1252 based on the table in this document or we could just import the function from de:Modul:WLink as mentioned by Ali1610. the question is if all the websites are compatible with windows-1252, or if you would have to use one encoding scheme for one, and another for others. Frietjes (talk) 14:32, 23 October 2016 (UTC)
okay, I imported the WLink module as suggested and updated template:single chart to use it for Austria. there may be other URLs which need it as well. Frietjes (talk) 14:53, 23 October 2016 (UTC)
Thanks a lot! At least for Agnetha Fältskog with an ä this works just fine. So I'm going to add the module to the other Hung Medien urls used in the charts templates. De728631 (talk) 16:43, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

Thank You Very Much!! S2--88marcus (talk) 17:36, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

@Frietjes: This didn't work. I suspect the "{dvd}[DVD]" down in |FlandersMV etc. is causing trouble when the brackets are transferred to WLink? De728631 (talk) 17:49, 23 October 2016 (UTC)
De728631, you can pull that part out of the encoding since it's always the same text. just encode it by hand. this change fixed Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga: Cheek to Cheek Live!. you could probably change the urlencoding as well. I would but I don't have a good test case. Frietjes (talk) 19:23, 23 October 2016 (UTC)
Excellent, thank you. De728631 (talk) 20:35, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

*N Sync name probleam...

It's not working anymore! When I did the article (9 October) it was working. Probably something with the " * ". See here: No Strings Attached (NSYNC album). Can someone help me?--88marcus (talk) 18:16, 30 October 2016 (UTC)

You will have to explain yourself better - what exactly "isn't working"? Richard3120 (talk) 18:23, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
The source links for every link containing a * and using the method we found one section above are broken (for example the ones for Austria and Switzerland). Somehow the * is not encoded into the URL, but seen as Wikisyntax, which means that it generates a bullet point instead of being incorporated into the URL. @Frietjes: maybe you can help again? --Ali1610 (talk) 18:28, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
@Richard3120: It is impossible to put *N SYNC's name in the chart table and go to the right link of the chart page, I tried to put only N Sync, Nsync or put the name without the "*", but the link appears broken, it was working when I did it 21 days ago.--88marcus (talk) 18:34, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
This has to do with the recent template code change from urlencode to Module:WLink which was introduced to handle the ANSI encoding at the Hung Medien chart websites. This was done because other special characters like ä, ö, ü, etc. were not properly resolved in the previous template versions (see the Agnetha Fältskog section right above). Apparently though we've got a new problem now. While produces "%2A" in UTF-8, WLink seems to be thinking in MediaWiki syntax and wants to apply a bullet point anywhere it gets fed an asterisk.
"NSync" without asterisk won't work either because the character is required to produce the correct url. De728631 (talk) 19:13, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
De728631, 88marcus, Ali1610, Richard3120, should be fixed now. Frietjes (talk) 14:11, 31 October 2016 (UTC)
@Frietjes: Thank You very much!!--88marcus (talk) 16:49, 31 October 2016 (UTC)
Thank you Frietjes – I assume this is now fixed for any instances of band names with asterisks in their titles? Not that I can think of any other examples at the moment, but just for information. Richard3120 (talk) 16:59, 31 October 2016 (UTC)
Richard3120, the fix I added was for "starting with an asterisk" [2]. it would be trivial to extend for an asterisk anywhere, but it wasn't clear if that is a problem. Frietjes (talk) 17:06, 31 October 2016 (UTC)
Thanks – like I said, I can't think of any other instances where this problem would occur, but if it is trivial I'm sure we can fix it as and when the need arises. Richard3120 (talk) 17:12, 31 October 2016 (UTC)

@Frietjes: Has a recent edit to this template and Template:Single chart resulted in ampersands not being supported? Now, if an artist or song has an "&" in the artist or album parameters, it will not work (only for Hung Medien charts, like the Belgian charts, Sweden, Australia and so on). I recall that as recently as last week, it did, so I'm assuming a recent change has resulted in this error. Could this possibly be fixed? Ss112 07:21, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

Can you show us an example where it doesn't work? De728631 (talk) 05:12, 2 November 2016 (UTC)
For instance, most of the links on Starving (song); as the artist parameter contains "Hailee Steinfeld & Grey feat. Zedd", this URL does not work: http://www.australian-charts.com/showitem.asp?interpret=Hailee+Steinfeld+&+Grey+feat.+Zedd&titel=Starving&cat=s Ss112 17:40, 2 November 2016 (UTC)
@Ss112: done. Please consider checking the links first before changing something, as not every Hung site is needing it (for example Portugal and New Zealand don't). --Ali1610 (talk) 21:39, 2 November 2016 (UTC)
@Ali1610: Your edit to that page does not fix the Wikipedia-wide problem that ampersands no longer work in certain Hung Medien site links. I really do not think it's much of a solution to this problem to change ampersands to "%26". This isn't going to be much of a viable long-term solution, as I'm sure other editors will come along and change it back to "&" thinking it's a typo. Also, I don't understand what you even mean by "consider checking the links first before changing something". I didn't change anything; I'm asking template editors to try to remedy the problem by editing the template, not for you to change links to "%26" on one page I pointed out as an example. This goes far beyond Starving (song), so it is by no means "done" or solved. Ss112 01:44, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
Actually Portugal and NZ should not be working either but the code in singlechart has not yet been changed for these pages. That means that links containing a & are still working but e.g. a charted single by Mägo de Oz would not be linked correctly. This needs to be solved on the template level though. De728631 (talk) 15:18, 4 November 2016 (UTC)
@Ss112: It should be fixed now. The ampersand is working and anything else in the weblinks for Hung Medien is encoded in ANSI. If you find any more errors, please let us know. De728631 (talk) 21:01, 4 November 2016 (UTC)
@De728631: "Starving" and other song links work, but did something go astray with the album chart coding? For instance, hovering over and testing the Australian and Belgian links on Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats (album), the URL works with the artist parameter, but now says {song} where it should link to whatever is contained the album parameter. (Everything else is good though; accents now work!) Ss112 23:52, 4 November 2016 (UTC)
Yes, this was a copy and paste error on my side which has now been fixed by IndianBio (thanks a lot!). De728631 (talk) 15:22, 5 November 2016 (UTC)

Errors for entries using ampersands for Hung Medien charts

Charts that use the Hung Medien database (Australia, Austria, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland and so on) no longer appear to support use of the ampersand symbol (&), whereas until quite recently they did. Any attempt to use the symbol (outside of using the coding for it) results in a "not found" error; not sure if this was caused by a recent alteration to the code. Can this be fixed for both this and Template:Single chart? It would be very helpful, as many artist and even album parameters use this symbol. Thanks. Ss112 18:57, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

Can you provide an example in an article or in your sandbox? Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:16, 6 November 2016 (UTC)

Error message and tracking category for unsupported parameters

I have added error tracking for unsupported parameters to this template. See Category:Pages using album chart with unknown parameters. A red error message appears when you Preview the article, in the chart section of the article. In the category, the articles are sorted by the name of the parameter that is unsupported.

I have added this error-checking to a number of heavily used infoboxes, and it usually goes smoothly, highlighting errors that improve the articles that end up in the category. Every once in a while, parameters are missed or something goes wrong. If that happens, don't panic, just post here and I will be happy to fix it. Revert the change if you feel that you must.

I have already found and fixed a few problems with foreign-language words being used instead of |year= and |week=, which would then show in the references as {year} and {week}.

If I have made any mistakes in coding, or if template changes are desired, please let me know. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:20, 6 November 2016 (UTC)

BillboardRandB chart

The Billboard R&B Albums chart appears not to have been added, and it does not work. It is however listed on page. I don't know the reason, perhaps it has been removed, can anyone clarify? I can add it but I don't want to do it without knowing first why it isn't there, or someone else can add it. Hzh (talk) 13:42, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

I'll fix that soon if no one objects, maybe add others as well like New Age. Hzh (talk) 16:40, 26 January 2017 (UTC)

The R&B Albums chart appears not to be listed in the Template:BillboardChartNum, so would need consensus to have that included in Template talk:BillboardChartNum as it is protected (few people seem to check there though). Something seems to be wrong with New Age Albums - it give the correct url for right Billboard website, but it doesn't come out right in the table. Can't see what is wrong in the script, perhaps someone else can have a look at it. Hzh (talk) 19:22, 4 February 2017 (UTC)

 Fixed, I think. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:11, 4 February 2017 (UTC)
Excellent, thank you. The R&B Albums chart appears to work fine, but I haven't been able to get the New Age Albums to work, if you can fix and add that it would be great. Hzh (talk) 02:19, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
Done. I added BillboardNewAge to Dark Sky Island, and it appears to work fine. – Jonesey95 (talk) 07:03, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
Ditto, tried a few and they worked, like Forest (George Winston album). Great work, much appreciated. Hzh (talk) 11:26, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

Latin Pop Albums

Hello, can the US Billboard Latin Pop Albums entry have its URL chart number suffix changed from "453" to "295"? It appears to be the current location of the chart; for instance, the link generated by BillboardLatinPop, if using the artist Shakira, gives http://www.billboard.com/artist/278867/Shakira/chart?f=453 as the link; however, Billboard now uses http://www.billboard.com/artist/278867/Shakira/chart?f=295. Thank you. Ss112 03:04, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

How do we handle old names for charts?

Let's say we want to use this template for older albums which charted on charts that were not known at the time by the names the template outputs (ex. Billboard 200 used to be known as Billboard Top Pop Albums, and Billboard 200 Top Albums). Is there any way to account for this? Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talkcontributions) 15:19, 22 June 2017 (UTC)

@Y2kcrazyjoker4: as far as I know, there is no way to change this. Personally I agree that it would probably be more accurate to use the names as they were at the time of the chart entry (and also the company compiling the chart at that point – for example, the UK charts have had four different chart compilers since the official national charts began in 1969). But I suspect it would require an awful lot of coding work, and also a lot of investigation to find out exact dates when the names changed... for many Billboard charts this has happened several times over their course of their history. Richard3120 (talk) 15:20, 10 July 2017 (UTC)

Germany3 parameter

Unless I've made an error somewhere, the "Germany3" option in this template no longer appears to work – it just seems to redirect to the home page of Offizielle Charts. I will probably strike the option from the template and suggest that editors use the "Germany4" option instead, unless someone comes up with a fix or tells me I'm doing something wrong. Richard3120 (talk) 15:34, 10 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi, the Scottish albums and singles template doesn't work anymore. It redirects to the main Scottish chart page, not to the archived chart. Could anyone fix this? Max24 (talk) 11:59, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

@Max24: I put the date without the "-" (beside 2000-10-22 I put 20001022) and it works!--88marcus (talk) 17:16, 29 July 2017 (UTC)

Putting a date on the template for UK singlecharts or albumcharts will now automatically redirect you here.[3] Unreal7 (talk) 22:13, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

I've been noticing that too. It's odd considering the OCC links includes the date like this. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 02:27, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
@Unreal7: I've discovered that, as learnt in the scottish charts below this section, if you remove the dashes in the date the template works for the album. That might work for the single charts as well, but I haven't tested it yet. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 20:59, 29 July 2017 (UTC)

Turkey Album Charts

I've found another album chart named Turkey Album Charts used in Wiki articles such as Brothers in Arms (album) that doesn't exist in the album chart template. Does anyone know if there is an official album chart for Turkey? Thanks. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 20:47, 29 July 2017 (UTC)

There is now, but I'd be very surprised if an official one existed in 1985. There are an awful lot of unreferenced national charts in the table for that article - they need checking one by one, and any that can't be verified should probably be removed. I have it in the back of my mind to improve the Dire Straits album articles, but as always, I need to find the time and the information in 1980s music magazines first... Richard3120 (talk) 23:15, 29 July 2017 (UTC)
Agreed. Some of the charts look very off for Brothers in Arms, specifically France, and Italy. Spain has a ref but needs confirming. However, like you mentioned, they could be in music magazines not covered in websites. E.G. Australia could be confirmed in the Kent Report instead of ARIA. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 01:50, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
@MrLinkinPark333: definitely reached no. 1 in the Kent Music Report... in fact it was easily Australia's top album of 1985, having spent 23 weeks at no. 1 that year... Richard3120 (talk) 04:07, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
That's good to know that one is confirmed. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 18:45, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
It's not just chart positions I want to check from old magazines and newspapers, but also album reviews and interviews/articles that can be used to expand the sections on song composition and recording. But there are so many records from the 70s and 80s I want to do this for, it'll take a while. Richard3120 (talk) 19:55, 30 July 2017 (UTC)

Israel Albums Chart

Hi all. I am seeing instances of Israel Albums Chart in articles such as The Collection (Alanis Morissette album). Problem is, I'm not sure which Israel chart it's referring to since there isn't an Israel album chart in this template. Anyone have an idea what an official Israeli album chart would be? Thanks. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 05:38, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

@MrLinkinPark333: sorry, just seen this. I don't think there is an Israeli album chart – I checked back through the edit history of The Collection, and the reference to an Israeli album chart position was added way back in 2006 by the editor Extraordinary Machine... he/she is still active on Wikipedia, so maybe they can tell us where they got that information from. Billboard website changed again!

The template doesn't work anymore for Billboard charts, because it changed again. There's something in progress to fix that?!--88marcus (talk) 22:07, 8 October 2017 (UTC)

I believe the urls need to be updated for each and every chart name like this http://www.billboard.com/music/xxxx/chart-history/yyyyy where xxxx will be from the artist parameter in the template with hyphen and yyyy will be generated from the chart name given. —IB [ Poke ] 06:04, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

Update Billboard charts

I would like to request that the Billboard charts get updated with the website's new URL format. I have made the changes in the sandbox and successfully tested them. Currently most charts technically fail verification as they do not redirect well.

Example change:

AS IS
| Billboard200 = US Billboard 200{{#if: {} | {{#tag:ref|{{cite news|url={url}|title={title}|location={{#if:{}|{location}}}|work={{#if:{}|{work}}}|page={{#if:{}|{page}}}|date={{#if:{}|{date}}}|publisher={{#if:{}|{publisher}}}|accessdate={{#if:{}|{accessdate}}}}}}} | {{#tag:ref|[{{BillboardURLbyName|artist={artist}|chart=Billboard 200}} "{artist} Album & Song Chart History"] Billboard 200 for {artist}. {{#if:{}|{publishdate}. }} {{#if:{}| Retrieved {accessdate}. }}|name={{#if:{}|{refname}|"ac_{}_{}"}}|group={{#if:{}| "{refgroup}"}}}}}} {{Album chart/chartnote|{}}}

PROPOSED
| Billboard200 = US Billboard 200{{#if: {} | {{#tag:ref|{{cite news|url={url}|title={title}|location={{#if:{}|{location}}}|work={{#if:{}|{work}}}|page={{#if:{}|{page}}}|date={{#if:{}|{date}}}|publisher={{#if:{}|{publisher}}}|accessdate={{#if:{}|{accessdate}}}}}}} | {{#tag:ref|"{artist} Chart History (Billboard 200)" Billboard. {{#if:{}|{publishdate}. }} {{#if:{}| Retrieved {accessdate}. }}|name={{#if:{}|{refname}|"ac_{}_{}"}}|group={{#if:{}| "{refgroup}"}}}}}} {{Album chart/chartnote|{}}}

UK chart

What's happened to the UK chart template? It no longer works. You click on it and it says "This no longer exists". Turns out that it's only broken because of a plus sign and capitals instead of a space and lower-case. Unreal7 (talk) 11:23, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

Can you please show us the specific reference where it didn't work for you? I've tried the template in Ride the Lightning and it produces this page which is just fine. De728631 (talk) 13:09, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
Metalicca isn't affected because it's one word, but any artist whose name consists of two or more words is affected. Unreal7 (talk) 08:28, 8 June 2013 (UTC)
I see what you mean. The current format can be seen in http://www.officialcharts.com/artist/_/J%20Geils%20Band/. Lower-case is not required but the separator is now a space sign. Let me see if I can fix the template. De728631 (talk) 13:52, 8 June 2013 (UTC)
 Done De728631 (talk) 14:08, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

Unfortunately this still seems to be broken - the official chart company now seems to be using dashes as separators instead. I note that they also assign a number to the artist (the J Geils Band is 3307[4]) so perhaps the template could use that instead. -Ashley Pomeroy (talk) 14:39, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

"Ireland" parameters not working properly

For some reason, when using the "Ireland" set of parameters, the template is not working properly to create a page name and/or URL. See Paradise Valley (album)#Weekly charts for reference. Steel1943 (talk) 16:17, 21 February 2018 (UTC)

@Steel1943: for Ireland you also need to use "week" and "year" parameters to call up the correct chart from the GfK Chart-Track archive. Richard3120 (talk) 17:13, 21 February 2018 (UTC)
@Richard3120: Thanks for the prompt response. This template's documentation confused me a bit for some reason. Steel1943 (talk) 17:19, 21 February 2018 (UTC)
Yes, I wonder if the required parameters column should be moved to the second column, in order to make it clearer that these need to be used. I keep thinking the Certification Table Entry documentation could be overhauled as well. Richard3120 (talk) 18:13, 21 February 2018 (UTC)

template:albumchart|uk2 dates wrong *everywhere*?

Please see my amazement at template:albumchart dates wrong *everywhere*? where I complain about 100's of unfixed links that are using outdated date formats for that external site.

And now I see the above topics UK chart broken links and Scottish chart broken links, so the fact that the URL formats for the external site changed was noticed, and still all the old usages were never fixed? Where should this situation be forwards to? Shenme (talk) 07:09, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
