Lesley Akyaa Opoku Ware

Opoku Ware
Opoku Ware

* ... that the father of Ghana's Ambassador to Armenia, Lesley Akyaa Opoku Ware, ruled the Ashanti and, unusually, her mother did too as a First Lady? Source: mum and dad

  • Taking this one. Review to follow. SusunW (talk) 16:00, 18 October 2021 (UTC)
New enough, created 12 October, nom on 16; long enough, 2915 char; neutral; in-line cites; photo appears to be marked CC-by SA and may be freely distributed, altered, etc. with proper attribution (same marking for the other photo in the article); QPQ done; hook at 144 char is under maximum; has broad appeal. There appears to be a bit of close paraphrasing, mostly earwig picks up titles, which is fine, but the other activities section is problematic. Regarding the hook, the cited source does not indicate that Lesley is an ambassador to Armenia, but this does and is cited in the article. The link to Walker's piece in the Independent is paywalled, but I was able to find a copy in archive.org. (You should use the archived citation so others can access.) In the article, you have Her mother broke the mould and became not only "a first lady" but also a de facto ruler until she died in 1995. To my reading the source says that it was unique that the mother ruled and was "almost" first lady. The obituary (23 March 1996, p 25) in the Guardian for Lady Victoria Opoku-Ware II (née Victoria Nana Akua Afiiriyie Bando) says she was first lady (and confirms she was his only wife and died in 1996--not 1995), was influential in her husband being elevated to the throne, was an advisor, ambassador, and influencer of policy and the one on (28 March 1996, page 10) says she had political and diplomatic duties. Those things seem as if to me the hook and the article don't really match. My other concern would be that the hook is about her parents rather than her. Perhaps the fact that she simultaneously holds multiple ambassadorships would make an interesting hook? That seems unusual to me. I am uber busy, so ping me please when the issues are addressed. I'm about to withdraw this nomination. I think "almost first lady" is a sliver away from "first lady" and is certainly not First Lady. These are new editors and these errors could easily be fixed but this it too high a bar IMO. I am reviewing (and fixing) DYK noms elsewhere. If anyone wants to take this over then do step up. Victuallers (talk) 17:44, 18 October 2021 (UTC)
Victuallers, I'm happy to fix the text, but then someone else will have to review it. No point, IMO to withdraw it, it's a simple fix. SusunW (talk) 18:34, 18 October 2021 (UTC)

Needs a new reviewer, since I edited the article and proposed an alt. Please just ping me if there are issues. I don't want credit for it, but don't want Victuallers to stress about it either. SusunW (talk) 19:06, 18 October 2021 (UTC)

SusunW You are allowed to edit articles while you are reviewing them. You don't need to withdraw. There is no conflict of interest - we are all trying to improve these articles. This isn't a GA review where you request the insertion of a comma and then it is debated before the comma is inserted. You can just make as many changes as you like. Without this process thenwe could end up with a dozen reviewers who all made a spelling correction before passing over to a new reviewer. (I'm peeved that DYK is becoming more process-focussed than productive) If you get to the point where you feel that you want to add yourself to the list of authors then you might have to ask for another reviewer, until then, please just fix stuff. Oh and Alt1 is factually correct. So I can tick that. She did have a famous dad (and mum). Victuallers (talk) 09:41, 19 October 2021 (UTC)
  • Starting re-review. I may not have a ton of time left today, but I can get to it tomorrow for sure. —valereee (talk) 18:14, 19 October 2021 (UTC)

Approving ALT1. —valereee (talk) 19:10, 19 October 2021 (UTC)

  • Promoter's comment: SusunW, while Victuallers is correct that making a minor copyedit or fix doesn't disqualify you from completing a review, you also can't review (or, frustratingly enough, promote) an ALT that you suggest on another user's nomination. Just to clarify theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (they/them) 23:03, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
