George Town, Penang
[edit]... that George Town, the capital city of the Malaysian state of Penang, is home to the nation's highest outdoor glass footwalk?Source: "the glass-bottomed Rainbow Skywalk at the top of Penang's Komtar tower is George Town's highest point" (Channel NewsAsia, 2016)
Improved to Good Article status by Vnonymous (talk). Self-nominated at 05:23, 25 February 2018 (UTC).
- Will review this. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 14:37, 28 February 2018 (UTC)
- @Vnonymous: It's getting late here, so the full review will follow, but so far, this check shows that some sources are dead. These dead links may need to resolved first, either through archive links or replacement references. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 14:43, 28 February 2018 (UTC)
- @Narutolovehinata5: Thank you very much for reviewing this entry :).
- Done FYI, I have replaced the dead sources. Vnonymous (talk) 22:23, 28 February 2018 (UTC)
Everything checks out (length, nomination time, sources, paraphrasing, etc.). No QPQ needed as this is the nominator's first nomination. The hook is interesting, but Vnonymous I suggest that you propose additional hooks so that the promoter can have more choices. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 03:14, 5 March 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks again for the approval. Looking forward to its appearance on the DYK. :) Vnonymous (talk) 10:33, 5 March 2018 (UTC)
- Hi, I came by to promote this. It is a very impressive article! However, per Rule D2, each paragraph needs at least one cite. I marked one that is not cited. I also marked a chart—do you have a source saying that these are "the available FM stations"?
- There is also close paraphrasing from one source; this should be rewritten in your own words:
- Source: By 1807, a Royal Charter was granted to Penang which provided for the setting up of a Supreme Court. This was followed by the appointment of the first Supreme Court judge designated as the “Recorder”.
- Article: In 1807, (Note: The source says "by" this year, not "in" this year) a Royal Charter was granted to Penang which provided for the establishment of a Supreme Court. This was followed by the appointment of the first Supreme Court judge designated as the Recorder.

- Thank you. All paragraphs cited and no close paraphrasing seen. Now I would like you to consider a different hook. The image is not so clear—it looks like a bathtub—and the hook says nothing about how high it is. You have so much good information in the article; could you suggest better hooks? Here are some ideas:
- ALT1:
... that the height of buildings in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of central George Town, Penang is capped at 18 metres (59 ft), and any structure next to a historic building cannot be taller than it? - ALT2:
... that George Town, Penang is the only city in Malaysia where English-speakers have no problem reading street signs?Yoninah (talk) 12:34, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
- @Yoninah: Thanks for your feedback. I have edited the article as per your recommendations.
- @Yoninah: The skywalk is at the top of the Komtar Tower, which stands at nearly 250 metres tall. Perhaps the original hook could be rephrased in some way so as to mention the height of the skywalk. I will get to it later.
- I have not really had the time to think of alternative hooks. But your first suggestion does seem interesting to me. The second one, though, is debatable, as not all street signs within the city have English names (as some carry either Chinese, Tamil or Arabic scripts).
- If I am to suggest alternative hooks, here are some of my ideas.
- ALT1: ... that the height of buildings in the UNESCO World Heritage Site within George Town in Penang, Malaysia, is capped at 18 metres (59 ft), and any structure next to a historic building cannot be taller than it?
- ALT3: ... that George Town, the capital city of the Malaysian state of Penang, was the first British settlement within Southeast Asia?
- @Yoninah: As for the original hook, it could be rephrased as follows.
- ALT4:
... that George Town, the capital city of the Malaysian state of Penang, is home to the nation's highest outdoor glass footwalk, which stands at nearly 250 metres above the ground?
- ALT4:
- You may also consider this alternative hook.
- ALT5: ... that George Town, the capital city of the Malaysian state of Penang, is the first city in Malaysia to operate a public bicycle-sharing service, known as LinkBike?

Thank you for the alts. I struck all the previous hooks. Let's go through the ALTs one by one:
- ALT1: If you want this one, we'll need a new reviewer, since I wrote the hook. Calling on original reviewer @Narutolovehinata5: to approve ALT1.
- ALT3: Offline hook ref AGF and cited inline.
- ALT4: The article doesn't say anything about the height of the footwalk. If you want to include it, I suggest writing it in the article itself, not in the caption.
- ALT5: Hook fact verified and cited inline. Yoninah (talk) 20:59, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Yoninah: Noted. Striking off ALT4, so that you can choose between the three remaining hooks. Vnonymous (talk) 22:18, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
- ALT1 is approved since it meets the requirements. As for the proposed hooks, my preference for promotion is ALT3 considering that it's perhaps the most historically significant. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 02:45, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you, Narutolovehinata5. But is it the most hooky? Yoninah (talk) 09:53, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
- ALT1 is approved since it meets the requirements. As for the proposed hooks, my preference for promotion is ALT3 considering that it's perhaps the most historically significant. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 02:45, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
- Returning to the nominations page pending GA reassessment. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 14:03, 7 April 2018 (UTC)
- Cwmhiraeth, the GA reassessment has been withdrawn, so I'm restoring the previous tick. (Vnonymous, please note the suggestions made as part of the closure.) BlueMoonset (talk) 00:55, 17 April 2018 (UTC)
