Not notable... for now

Although we appreciate a lot of the contributions many have made to create a separate page for Zayn Malik, we have to decline for now as he is not notable as an individual artist. You may continue to contribute relevant information in concise manner on the One Direction section of List of The X Factor finalists (UK series 7)#One Direction werldwayd (talk) 07:44, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

Just to add that even if One Direction become notable outside of The X Factor, the band's members still shouldn't have articles unless they become notable outside of One Direction. AnemoneProjectors 15:33, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

Musician notable enough for own page

Zayn Malik is now notable enough to have his own page, according to the One Direction wiki page, the band and its members (which include Malik) have achieved enough notability. Also, Malik's bandmates Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson have pages of their own as well. EllieCee (talk) 02:37, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

Basilqur (talk) 11:21, 30 January 2015 (UTC) Zayn Malik

Malik at the 2014 ARIA Music Awards, Sydney, 26 November 2014 Zain Javadd "Zayn" Malik,[14] born 12 January 1993 (age 22),[15] is from Bradford, West Yorkshire, England.[16] His father, Yaser Malik, is British Pakistani, and his mother, Tricia (née Brannan) Malik, is of Irish and English descent.[17] He has one older sister, Doniya, and two younger sisters, Waliyha and Safaa.[5][18]

He grew up in East Bowling,[16] was a pupil at Lower Fields Primary School, and went to Tong High School, a state comprehensive school.[19] Malik did not fit in at his first two schools due to his mixed heritage. Malik has stated that he started taking pride in his appearance after moving schools at the age of twelve.[9] Upon auditioning for The X Factor, he stated: "I was looking for an experience".[20] He cites urban music as his main musical influence, growing up, he was into R&B and rap.[9][20] He as well as other members of One Direction further notes artists such as Bruno Mars, as a "dream collaborator."[21] Malik is a heavy cigarette smoker; in late 2011, he expressed his desire to quit.[22] Malik is Muslim, and once affirmed that by tweeting "La ila ha ill lalla ho muhammed door rasoolalah" (declaration of faith, meaning: "There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah").[23] In June 2012, Malik's approach to Islam was criticised by blogger Debbie Schlussel, who accused him of advertising Islam to young fans; at the same time, he was criticised, on Twitter, by conservative Muslims, for not taking Islamic doctrine seriously enough.[24][25] In July 2014, during the 2014 Israel–Gaza conflict, Malik tweeted the message "#FreePalestine" to his 13 million Twitter followers, reportedly provoking anger from One Direction fans in Israel.[26]

As of 18 August 2013, Malik is engaged to singer Perrie Edwards, of girl group Little Mix.[27] Malik, along with Styles and Tomlinson, support Manchester United.[28] He also supports Pakistan's national cricket team and once tweeted when Pakistan lost the Cricket World Cup 2011 semi-finals.[29]

This page is in desperate need of citations. If some editors could possibly go fact-checking, that'll help. I'll do it, too. Especially with this page probably garnering more traffic now that Zayn Malik has left One Direction, we need it to be better. Thanks! MTG1989 (talk) 20:15, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

Merge or delete?

Given what has happened before for articles on individual members of One Direction, cf. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Louis Tomlinson (2nd nomination), it seems likely that this article will be deleted.

However, if deletion doesn't happen, then it ought to go without saying that this page should be merged with Zayn Malik. --GentlemanGhost (converse) 23:40, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

One Direction currently is composed of Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Liam Payne. Greg Horan is a potential addition to the band to replace former member Zayn Malik. Malik was a member of the band until March 25, 2015 when the band's management released a statement on their Facebook page that Zayn would be leaving the band. It is speculated that he was either politely asked to leave by management after violating his contract or left due to overwhelming stress he experienced with groupies and a demanding schedule while on tour. One Direction topped the pop music charts with their first single, "What Makes You Beautiful," when it was released in September 2011 in the United Kingdom. Their debut album, Up All Night, was a best-seller in both the United Kingdom and the United States. In 2012, Malik toured with One Direction on their first tour, Up All Night Tour, and participated in the release of their second album, Take Me Home. In 2013, One Direction: This Is Us, a documentary about the band directed by Morgan Spurlock, was released in August 2013. The film grossed more than $30 million worldwide its first weekend in theaters. The band's third studio album, Midnight Memories, was released on 25 November 2013. The band released their fourth studio album, Four, in 2014.} Greghoran87 (talk) 03:38, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

Title

The title should just be Zayn Malik not "Zayn Malik (musician)". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sweden Rocks hard (talkcontribs) 04:13, 26 March 2015‎

It should still be Zayn Malik (musician) for the fact he wrote/helped write song on all albums. Also he only left two days ago you don't know what he has planned. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Paolaxo (talkcontribs) 18:00, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

As he is the only Zayn Malik who shows up in the Wiki search bar, it is unnecessary to specify (musician). "Since no two articles can have the same title, it is sometimes necessary to add distinguishing information, often in the form of a description in parentheses after the name." his mother is "white"?

I've never seen something like this in Wiki: "his mother, Tricia (née Brannan) Malik, is a white English woman of Irish and English descent." Why specify "white"? What other type of "English woman of Irish and English descent" is there? Does it mean she's not "black Irish"? Why not explain what colour of a "British Pakistani" his father is? If his grandfather was English but born in Pakistan, and moved to England, then would his father be a "white British Pakistani"? A dark-brown one? --Richardson mcphillips (talk) 21:04, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

Middle name

There's currently not a source for it (that I can see), and can't find one myself. So, how is his middle-name spelt- Javadd, Javed or something else? It seems to be changed at least once a day. Also, could an actual source be added for it? Joseph2302 (talk) 21:52, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

I would like to change the spelling of Zayn and his middle name in a couple of your sentences. For example, you spelled Jawaad wrong in multiple sentences (Javadd) amd you also spelled Zayn as Zain which is incorrect. Your spelling is a little bit off there. If you could change it that would be great. Thanks, A concerned editor Sydneyshark (talk) 18:42, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

That image cannot be added to Commons unless it is freely licenced, which I doubt that it is. The URL of the photo is not enough to establish this. It would be better to choose a photo that is already on Commons, than attempt to get a photo you find on the internet uploaded there, as such an image is likely to be copyrighted and copyrighted material is not allowed on Commons. –AnemoneProjectors14:01, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi, I would just like to know why is Perrie Edwards his only partner cited on the side when he dated several women since he debuted with 1D and is currently dating model Gigi Hadid? He dated former X Factor girl group "Belle Amie" member Geneva Lane in 2010. He then dated UK artist Rebecca Ferguson in 2011. There has been other girls but they're not worth mentioning. I find it pretty misleading as it makes it seem like he has only been with Perrie E. I think it would be best to mention all of his partners, but that would only be ridiculous so might as well not mention them at all on the side, as they're all just girlfriends and not actual spouses. Other celebrities only have their marriages cited on the side, nothing else related to relationships. And it's much better as relationships shouldn't define a person, especially not if they haven't dated that long and didn't get married. ChinaLineDefense (talk) 15:22, 4 March 2016 (UTC)

Zayn Malik is the 2nd cousin of Sham Idrees. This information was recently deleted from this page and needs to be updated again Moemandozai (talk) 19:58, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

Not done Please provide a reliable source.LM2000 (talk) 21:31, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
This was removed in this edit with the edit summary "Sham is not Zayn's cousin(confirmed by Zayn's Cousin Aaroosa Malik) in this link: https://ask.fm/AaroosaaM/answers/117238590922". Ask.fm isn't a reliable source, whereas News New York probably is, especailly as they claim to have interviewed Malik and spoken about Idrees with him. Aaroosa Malik may not know who the second cousins of her first cousin are if they are not her own second cousins. Though she is probably Zayn's cousin on his father's side since they share the same surname (their fathers are probably brothers), and Idrees is said to be a second cousin on Zayn's father's side, meaning that he would also be Aaroosa's second cousin. But she just might not know all of her second cousins. So her answer could be true or false. I would personally go with the more reliable source and would suggest undoing User:Adhemali's edit, and restoring the word "second" before "cousin", which was removed at some point for no apparent reason. Idrees' article still states they are cousins. AnemoneProjectors 12:05, 16 March 2016 (UTC)

Orphaned references in Zayn Malik

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Zayn Malik's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "atlantic":

Reference named "usatoday":

Reference named "nme":

Reference named "flavorwire":

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 23:06, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

You asked or reliable sources; here is Gigi Hadid herself being asked about Zayn by an E! interviewer on the red carpet for MTV's 2016 Movie Awards, she says they're dating when she gets asked about the PILLOWTALK music video she starred on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amqdYyjudY4 - She also refers to him as "my boyfriend" in this Vogue interview for their May 2016 Vogue issue shoot by Mario Testino: http://www.vogue.com/13426306/zayn-malik-mind-of-mine-gigi-hadid-naples/ - They also both made it pretty obvious that they're together on their social media. Info Box Correction

Zayn's listed partners should remove Perrie Edwards and replace with Gigi Hadid (2016 - Present). SOURCE[1]

Jennifersanders11 (talk) 19:11, 5 July 2016 (UTC)

Can you help here? I've added a source. @AnemoneProjectors:! Jennifersanders11 (talk) 18:33, 13 July 2016 (UTC)
I've added this to the infobox, as you pinged me. However in future you can use the {{edit semi-protected}} template, that way you may get a faster response. Thanks! anemoneprojectors 19:16, 13 July 2016 (UTC)
Ahhh still learning - Thank you @AnemoneProjectors:!! :) Jennifersanders11 (talk) 18:24, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
{{edit semi-protected}} This was removed from the InfoBox. Can you help get Gigi Hadid added again and remove Perrie Edwards? @AnemoneProjectors:Jennifersanders11 (talk) 19:47, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
Hi, when you use the "{{edit semi-protected}}" template, don't copy the "tl|" part, just the rest (I used {{tl}} to stop it showing up as the actual template but to show you what to type - you copy it from the talk page, i.e. {{edit semi-protected}}, not the edit page. Anyway, Gigi was apparently removed because the relationship has been deemed not notable or long-term enough to be mentioned in the infobox. I'm not going to revert it - if we added everyone he dates then the infobox would be cluttered with the information. We don't remove Perrie though. anemoneprojectors 13:37, 21 July 2016 (UTC)

New Infobox Image

Can an administrator of the page update the profile image on this article to the attached photo? It is a newer image and has already been added to Wikimedia Commons and is owned by Zayn Malik.

Photo of Zayn Malik

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Zayn_Wiki.jpg

Jennifersanders11 (talk) 19:37, 5 July 2016 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure this isn't a free-to-use image, as Tineye shows 177 results for it. If it's owned by Malik himself (which I doubt, as he's the subject and it's not a selfie - the owner is the person who took the photo) then it's unlikely he would release it himself with a free licence, as I'm sure he has better things to do or to care about than Wikipedia and learning how to use it. I also doubt he would create a Commons account with the username "11zaynmalik11", and that the photo was taken at 04:32 (more likely it was saved from the internet at that time). Therefore, instead of putting it into the article, I shall be nominating it for deletion. anemoneprojectors 08:27, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
How do we get a selfie he's posted added as the infobox image? Perhaps this from his official account: https://www.instagram.com/p/80tGoNJqd1/?taken-by=zayn or https://www.instagram.com/p/9x2M3XpqdK/?taken-by=zayn @AnemoneProjectors:! Jennifersanders11 (talk) 20:22, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
@Jennifersanders11: Zayn would have to log into Wikimedia Commons and release to image with a Creative Commons licence. He will never do that. Sometimes PR companies or agents do release photos but it's rare. In the case of Zayn, we have several images to choose from already, so we don't need to go around hunting out copyrighted images and trying to get them released freely. anemoneprojectors 09:11, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

I will go ahead and replace the infobox image with this one per WP:BOLD. Feel free to revert me if you wish. --Majora (talk) 04:36, 12 August 2016 (UTC)

Oh how did that happen? anemoneprojectors 07:08, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
@AnemoneProjectors: I assume that someone, perhaps the OP, emailed or got in touch with the copyright holders and asked if they were willing to release it. The permissions took a little bit to get to (due to the backlog) and a little bit longer to verify but the image is now approved for use on all Wikimedia projects. --Majora (talk) 20:28, 12 August 2016 (UTC)

Zayn Malik to just Zayn

Since Zayn's stage name is now Zayn after he left One Direction, I think the article and everything that has Zayn Malik be renamed to Zayn. Because, take this for example, Snoop Dogg's real name is Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr but his stage name is Snoop Dogg so the stage name goes on titles and everywhere instead of the real name. Previously we addressed Zayn on articles as Zayn Malik because he didn't have a stage name before going solo. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheMagnificentist (talkcontribs) 04:10, 30 July 2016 (UTC)

Per WP:MONONYM ("don't use a first name for an article title if the last name is known and fairly often used"), I would say no. A Google News search for "Zayn" shows that his surname is very regularly used. However, most people probably don't know Snoop Dogg by any other name. But feel free to start a move request. anemoneprojectors 09:19, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
A move request in February was unanimously against it and I don't expect another one would have a different result. WP:MONONYM is a factor, but WP:COMMONNAME is as well. We don't name articles by current names when they're better known by another name and it's not abundantly clear that he is better known for his solo career than he was for being in One Direction.LM2000 (talk) 22:35, 4 August 2016 (UTC)

First of all, good finds! In the associated acts we put in other groups/artists that the subject has a long-standing professional relationship with. Not just one-off collaborations. Malik has a publishing deal with Universal, that is different then a record contract. We do not list those in the infobox at the moment. On sources, try to avoid using tabloids like the Sun or gossip magazines like Hello. But keep looking for sources on those as the song is notable. Karst (talk) 13:06, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
