Evgeny vs. Yevgeny

[edit]

Is there a good reason why we spell it it "Evgeny"? WP:RUS says that E (Russian letter) is romanized as "E", except at the start of words, when it becomes "Ye", and gives Boris Yeltsin as an example of what to do. -- JackofOz (talk) 06:44, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No interest? Very well, cop this:

Evgeny SvetlanovYevgeny Svetlanov — As per above. I would also argue that nobody has any problem with Я becoming, for example, Yakov (not Akov), or Ю becoming, say Yulia (not Ulia), so what's the problem with Е becoming Yevgeny (rather than Evgeny)? —Jack of Oz ... speak! ... 12:39, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment Yulia? I've seen that translated as Julia... and as for this particular case, they are translated with with and without a Y frequently... so I have no opinion on which is better, but I would say that either way works fine. 76.66.197.17 (talk) 05:02, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
