Change QS Global ranking from 29 to 25. The citation links to the 2021 QS rankings but the number quoted is from 2020. 176.24.91.191 (talk) 21:19, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
Proposed merge with University of Toronto Department of Mathematics
- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
- To not merge, given independent notability. Klbrain (talk) 04:46, 10 January 2020 (UTC)
Not enough content or independent sources to justify a separate page. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 22:18, 23 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Justlettersandnumbers: I decided that it's better to merge with University of Toronto Faculty of Arts and Science, as the Department of Mathematics is part of that faculty. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 15:58, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
- Disagree I would say it has enough independent coverage now. Aloneinthewild (talk) 22:01, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
- How about the other departments within the Faculty of Arts and Science? There's plenty of coverage for those as well. An example would be the rather large Department of Geography. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:33, 26 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Johnny Au: you seem to have made an argument for creating a Geography page, rather than opposing the merge. Note that there is also a Computer Science department page. On balance, I weakly oppose the merge proposal on the grounds that there seems to be enough independent notability for the number 1 mathematics department in Canada. Klbrain (talk) 09:42, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
- Upon further review, neither should be merged. Instead, other department articles can be created, such as with geography for example. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 13:04, 25 September 2019 (UTC)

U.S. news ranking 2021 should be updated. In 2021, UofT ranked 17th in world. Dreamer199202 (talk) 10:32, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
Since 2000
This section seems extremely unbalanced with half the section about a prominent case of unfair dismissal and a less prominent case of sexual discrimination. The other half is about funding acquired in the last 2 years, clearly not providing a NPOV of the developments at the University over the last 20 years. Clearly a lot is missing, both positive and negative and due weight is not given (eg Valentina Azarova case is missing). --hroest 19:27, 27 February 2021 (UTC)
In the section University of Toronto#Early history the term 'Upper Canada Executive Committee' is used. This is verbatim from a web page published by the University, but that term should probably be Executive Council of Upper Canada. We already have an article on that. This historical plaque in Kingston commemorates the first meeting of that council and uses the exact phrase 'Executive Council of Upper Canada'. See also page 38 of the Handbook by Frederick Armstrong currently used as a reference for our article on the Council. The entry in his index is for 'Executive Council'. CAUT censure
It seems the hiring controversy should probably be included in the article including the fallout which generated dozens of newspaper articles: see https://www.caut.ca/latest/2021/04/caut-council-imposes-rare-censure-against-university-toronto-over-azarova-hiring for a new development. --hroest 17:15, 26 April 2021 (UTC)
Peacock wording
It would be great to identify the peacock wording within the article. Currently, the template is jeopardizing the article's "Good Article" status. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 15:35, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
- What is jeopardising the GA status is the sudden flurry of partisan editing , especially to the lede and including edits such as this . Has the University decided to recruit professional spammers to up the ante? This stuff does not belong in the lede and hardly belongs anywhere in an article about an excellent University. Facts speak for themselves. Hyped up rankings add little and look like advertising and promotion. Velella Velella Talk 20:27, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
- I might have to request full protection to force discussion here in the talk page and clean up the article so that it can deserve the Good Article status again. After the full protection is lifted, the article itself may end up being extended-confirmed-protected as semi-protection has been proven not to stop promotional editing at all. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 01:20, 25 April 2021 (UTC)
- That seems reasonable. A University of this calibre deserves a GA article status article. Maybe it is just a flurry of new undergrads hyping up their new alma mater, but whatever the reason, the content needs to be kept balanced by one means or another. In the list of faculties in the 'Academics' section, change "Faculty of Pharmacy" to Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, "Faculty of Social Work" to 'Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work', "Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design" to 'John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design' and "Faculty of Nursing" to 'Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing'.
These are the full names of the faculties, with the names being their most identifiable references. 76.71.157.66 (talk) 22:46, 22 June 2021 (UTC)

In the list of Faculties, change "School of Public Policy and Governance" to the "Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy" - the new name of the faculty. 76.71.157.66 (talk) 04:18, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
- Done. ◢ Ganbaruby! (talk) 18:34, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
- Actually, I think the Munk school should be removed from this list, as it's not a faculty, but a department within the Faculty of Arts and Science (and is correctly listed on that page). Similarly, the faculty of forestry should be removed, as it no longer exists (it's been folded into the Daniels faculty of architecture). Steve Easterbrook (talk) 16:10, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

Under Notable People, add Lee Ross to the listed psychologists. His career and death was covered prominently by the NY Times here 2601:647:4E00:2040:9E9:37F:A7C9:434B (talk) 21:22, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
- I have not added him here, because just being notable isn't enough to merit inclusion in a prose list like that; we cannot fit every notable graduate into one paragraph. However, that is exactly what list pages are for, so I have added him to the appropriate section of the appropriate list article. - Astrophobe (talk) 21:38, 23 May 2022 (UTC)
- That is a much better course of action. There's a reason why the List of University of Toronto alumni article exists. There are numerous hidden notes to add alumni there in the main article. It's to prevent the main article from being too cluttered. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:24, 24 May 2022 (UTC)
Decades after the death of John Strachan???
This is what we currently have in the article: "The idea of federation initially met strong opposition at Victoria University, a Methodist school in Cobourg, but a financial incentive in 1890 convinced the school to join. Decades after the death of John Strachan, the Anglican seminary Trinity College entered federation in 1904, followed in 1910 by St. Michael's College, a Roman Catholic college founded by the Basilian Fathers." Who is this person? When was his death? Why is the length of time after his death significant? Are these pieces of info being sufficiently explained? Should this type of "sudden" presentation of information be avoided in Wikipedia articles? Ordinarius Beau 12:17, 15 April 2023 (UTC)

There is a grammar mistake, it says "University planNed" instead of "University planned." The capital N must become lowercase. This is in the demographics section. Azariakelman (talk) 02:56, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
Add Jordan Peterson
Jordan Peterson is certainly a notable person of this University. 78.49.172.175 (talk) 09:50, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- Not done The current list in the main article is too long as seen in the hidden notes. Please edit List of University of Toronto alumni instead. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 13:39, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- What is the criteria for being added to the notable alumni section in the article, or being relegated to the list article? Magnolia677 (talk) 17:08, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
- I've had an interesting exchange on the Swarthmore College talk page about this. Small school, fairly highly ranked, and a bloated (?) list of over 650 notable alumni on its notables page. A portion of these are also listed on the main college article. Another editor had opined that inclusion on the main article should be limited to those who are also listed on Wikipedia pages for other languages (interwiki links), first setting this bar at 14 non-English wikis and now 25. While novel, I argued that this criteria has no bearing on actual notability, nor had I seen it used elsewhere. We entered a cordial reversion cycle. No one had offered further comment on his idea, so I suggested (as I do here, for UT) that notability factors should be listed, by category of professional life, with specific attainment levels to warrant inclusion on either the main article, or the 'notable alumni' article. Jax MN (talk) 17:34, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Jax MN: Not just on alumni articles, but on city articles too. The really important ones go on the main article, and the B-listers go on the other. If I had a Wiki article I'd be crestfallen to find myself on that "less important list". Magnolia677 (talk) 19:11, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
- Jordan Peterson is a very controversial individual (with indefinite semi-protection even), but a very notable individual nonetheless. I am unsure if an exception can be made and him being added or not to the main article. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:52, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
