Multimap links
[edit]Hi, I was trying to add the postcode to the Medstead and Fourmarks Railway, which I think is GU34 AHH, and then I tried to do the link with multimap. The problem with that is the multimap links go to bing maps and do not work. What should I do? is a link to another map ok?Cdgillie (talk) 21:33, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Cdgillie: Several problems here. First, there is no such thing as "the Medstead and Fourmarks Railway", but I assume that you mean Medstead and Four Marks railway station, which is on the Mid Hants Railway - we don't list railways here, but stations. Second, I have no idea what link that you were trying to add, since you have neither pasted the problematic link here, nor saved your edit to UK railway stations – M. Third, this list is for national rail stations, but Medstead and Four Marks is not - it's a heritage station, and as such, belongs at List of heritage railway stations in the United Kingdom#M, where I see that it is already listed. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 10:33, 6 January 2017 (UTC)
- Firstly - yeah sorry, my bad, I missed off the word station, sorry. Secondly, I wanted to add the multimap link for the postcode, and said so in the first sentence. yeah my bad for not pasting a link though, so I apologise for that. I did not save my edit because the edit would not work because the multimap links do not work (see point 4). Third - That's fine, although the page makes no mention of this, it just says UK railway stations. Perhaps this should be updated to make it clear it is only a list of the National network. Fourthly though, an answer to the central question on the multimap links (which redirect to bing maps) not working is what I was looking for. Fifthly, given that Medstead and Fourmarks railway station IS listed on the main list, should it be kept or deleted?Cdgillie (talk) 16:07, 6 January 2017 (UTC)
- You still have not provided a link, so I cannot check it out.
- If you look in the infobox for any British station, there are links to the station lists. In the case of Medstead and Four Marks railway station (note the spacing and capitalisation of Four Marks), there's a row showing "Stations on heritage railways in the United Kingdom" and directly below that a whole set of links "A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z". - Going to the infobox for a station would be a workaround for readers, my point is that the postcodes on this page UK_railway_stations_–_M, for example SK10 1JD do not work. In fact I think that perhaps all old multimap links might now be broken? Cdgillie (talk) 07:46, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
- You could (off-line) use Streetmap to convert the postcode to a latitude/longitude and then use template:coord to do the display within wp. But the article is already showing its geodata [top rhs] already (from whence the reader has any number of mapping systems available), so why do you want to do this anyway? --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 22:34, 6 January 2017 (UTC)
- The problem is quite large, I am not expecially fussed about one postcode map link, but if all multmap links have been broken then that is quite disappointing. The link type in question is, for example, SK10 1JD which uses this to create it - http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&db=pc&addr1=&client=public&addr2=&advanced=&addr3=&pc=SK101JD&cidr_client=none SK10 1JD. I know there are any number of workarounds to find the location of a station, but it might be an idea to script a fix for this so all multimap links are updated so that they work, but I have no idea how to do this. - I have since noticed that people are converting them, and appear to be doing it manually. They have got up to the letter K so far. If anyone knows someone clever who can find a way of scripting a "find and replace" for all such links that would be a more reliable way of improving the quality of Wikipedia.Cdgillie (talk) 08:04, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
- WP:BOTREQ. It would have been better to say early on that it is a general problem, and not have me chasing after something that I had assumed was specific to one unsupplied link for a station that does not even belong in this list. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 10:37, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
- May be best to change them all to {{Ukrsrow}} which has got to C rather than convert just the post code. Keith D (talk) 13:58, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
