In third place ranking combinations, the combinations ABDE, ABDF and ABEF are not longer possible as well. Because the current rank 3 team from group C (Northern Ireland) already has more points that the rank 3 team from group A (Albania). So it is not possible for the third of group A to qualify and the third of group C not to.

213.10.122.189 (talk) 07:25, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

-- You are wrong. Albania and Northern Ireland both have 3 points, were Northern Ireland to lose heavily tonight, Albania could still rank above them. As things stand Albania could still rank above any of the other 3rd place teams still to play, the only guarantee so far is that Slovakia rank above Albania and thus no combination where A qualified but B doesn't is possible.145.8.180.209 (talk) 07:45, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

UEFA – the Union of European Football Associations. Here's a link to their website [2] with further explanation. The organizer of Euro 2016 championship. It is an association of associations, a representative democracy, and is the umbrella organisation for 55 national football associations across Europe. Slovakia already in last 16?

In the table highlighting the possible combinations of the 3rd place teams, why are the combinations that do not have B no longer possible? Does this mean Slovakia is guaranteed a place in the last 16? Sagi2711 (talk) 23:23, 20 June 2016 (UTC)

It was wrong and I fixed it. Slovakia can still finished fifth in the third-placed teams' ranking. Tvx1 23:38, 20 June 2016 (UTC)
I did wonder about that myself for a while. Then I realized that Slovakia (B) is better placed than Albania (A). So, any combination where Albania qualifies, but Slovakia doesn't, is impossible. TrondM (talk) 23:58, 20 June 2016 (UTC)
We now have 2 of the 3rd place teams, so I suppose scenario goes like this: If the 3rd place team in group C has a better record than Slovakia, they qualify, otherwise Slovakia qualifies... Sagi2711 (talk) 00:20, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

KNOCKOUT PHASE – First Table – Combinations which are no longer possible IS WRONG

Slovakia earn 4pts, they're the top in "Ranking of third-placed teams" But they HAVEN'T been QUALIFIED yet. Third place teams in 4 remaining table still can be better than Slovakia (earn 4 pt with better goal different.

So, It's complete WRONG to showing that the combinations which don't have "B" (Slovakia) is "No Longer Possible".

@98.122.20.56: My main interest on Wikipedia being the history of national football team competitions, I am perfectly aware of that. But as the constitutional name of the country this team represents is just "Ireland", and as there is no other team in Group E that could possibly be referred to as "Ireland", I decided to keep the table simple and concise. I'm OK with the "fix", though, if you insist on it. --Theurgist (talk) 22:29, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

Table of possibilities

Would this table not be more useful as a place-holder in the 3rd-placed ranking section, considering six of the teams from both groups E and F could potentially end up in the third-place spots?

In fact Hungary should be in there also, as it's entirely possible for them to place third after tomorrow, isn't it? If Hungary loses, depending on the goal diffs, or if both Portugal AND Iceland win.

Then consider the suggestion fully, at the start of the tournament we would have had a table of 24 teams, in fact right up until halfway through the groups we would have had that, which is neither useful nor conclusive to a sensible length article. Personally I'd have left the table off entirely until the second round of matches was complete but I do understand why it was there. Also consider your version shows Albania out of the top 4, which gives a false impression of the current situation 145.8.180.209 (talk) 06:52, 22 June 2016 (UTC)

Really the euros has incredible rules, a team mathematically with possibilities, reaches the last match without chances, raising the possibility that "give away" the match to his last rival, especially if they have historical links (remember only the shame of Gijón between Austria and West Germany ). It's a group stage, so the important thing is the results of everyone against everyone and no the individual results. This means that you can win a game 1-0 and then lose 2 matches by 8 goals that you can still move to the KO but the defeated can again lose 1-0 and won 5-0 their last match but be out..no have logic.--152.170.24.22 (talk) 17:10, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

Je suis blocked by Darkwind...mate, I used Gijón like as example of "give away" a match, this is a round-robin stage, but with this rules, your result in only one match can be more important than the results of the other two--152.170.24.22 (talk) 18:44, 22 June 2016 (UTC)

I was looking at both the 3rd place section, and the group tables in the section above it at the same time. As others have pointed out, shading their row as coloured, and listing them as "advancing" under the "Qualification" column is misleading. It looks the same now as it did before they actually clinched it. There should be an obvious display difference when the meaning is "so far they are in a position to move on" vs "it is confirmed that they will move on". This applies to the 3rd place table also, as it appeared to indicate that the top 4 teams at the time were going to move on, when the Group E games hadn't finished yet. Indeed, the outcome of group E changed things. Try to find a way to make it clear whether the Qualified status is permanent or temporary. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.115.215.12 (talk) 21:19, 22 June 2016 (UTC)

It is seriously offensive and unjust the way russia gets credited with all the ussr participations to tournaments prior to 1994, whereas countries like Ukraine do not.

So, in the part of the 'Euro 2016' article where it says "10 (1960, 1964, 1968, 1972, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2004, 2008, 2012)" [and if you want to go about it correctly it should be "4 (1996, 2004, 2008, 2012)", because russia is NOT the ussr, by the way, in the same way Serbia is not Yugoslavia]...

AT THE VERY LEAST YOU SHOULD ALSO ADD FOR UKRAINE too: "7 (1960, 1964, 1968, 1972, 1988, 1992, 2012)"!!

And in the notes section SHOULD BE ADDED: D. ^ From 1960 to 1988, Ukraine competed as the Soviet Union, and in 1992 as the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Hopefully editors understand Ukraine was also part of the soviet union and the CIS, and that players from Ukraine were integral to performances of the ussr football teams. And that russia did not officially buy the rights to exclusively brag about everything the ussr did.

source: these are commonly-known facts, easily verifiable; common historical knowledge

Not done UEFA considers Russia the successor of the Soviet Union. Compare their history for Russia and Ukraine. FIFA [5] and lots of other international organizations do the same, both in sports and other areas. Wikipedia just reports what official and reliable sources say. We don't judge whether it's fair. I dunno, I can see the benefit of it, since the World Cup and many other international competitions do have a third place match. Maybe it deserves explaining that the two losing semi-finalists receive a set of bronze medals each and effectively share third place. – PeeJay 09:16, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
There was a 3rd place match until 1980 when the teams had fewer matches. In 1980 the 3rd place match was the fourth match for those teams. In 1984 it would have been the fifth. In 2016 it would have been the seventh. I know other large tournaments do have a 3rd place match but I don't know whether other top club teams play as many matches as in Europe. There were two sets of bronze medals in 2012. Paragraph 9.06 of the 2016 regulations [6] says: "Forty gold medals are presented to the winning team and 40 silver medals to the runner-up. Additional medals may not be produced." Bronze medals are not mentioned but "may" makes it sound uncertain whether they are given. The corresponding 2012 paragraph said: "Forty gold medals are presented to the winning team and 40 silver medals to the runner-up. 40 bronze medals are presented to the defeated semi-finalists. Additional medals may not be produced." According to UEFA European Championship#Trophy there were no bronze medals 1984–2008. I don't know whether UEFA has an official 3rd place designation for the losing semifinalists in editions with no bronze medals. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:48, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

Controversies - Security

Can you update the Pitch quality section to highlight that the pitch at the Stade Pierre Mauroy in Lille was immediately replaced after the Italy – Republic of Ireland game on June 22 and is set to be ready for the Round of 16 game between Germany and Slovakia on June 26. the evidence for this can be seen in these links from UEFA and Various News agencies 1, 2, 3, 4. I have noticed on the section of pitch quality that someone had added something about the UEFA Consultant Hayden and France's grass Association debacle, which is fine, but it still does not highlight that the pitch in Lille had to be replaced. Currently the section reads as:
Pitch quality
The football pitches at French stadiums were criticized during the group stage for their poor quality. France coach Didier Deschamps was especially critical.[105][106] UEFA tournament director Martin Kallen blamed heavy rain for damaged turf, though the press speculated that non-football events may have also been a contributor.[107][108]
Leeds-based consultant Richard Hayden had reportedly ordered local groundsmen to re-lay pitches with Slovakian grass, provided by an Austrian company for an estimated €600,000 (£460,000). On 22 June it was reported that France's grass association officials had blamed Hayden for continued problems with the pitches.[109]

I don't think this fully explains the situation. I made some changes and added some things which you can see below together with citations from reliable sources. Can someone please read it and if happy please put it into the article or make changes they deem necessary:

The football pitches at French stadiums were criticized during the group stage for their poor quality. France coach Didier Deschamps was especially critical.[1] [2] UEFA tournament director Martin Kallen blamed heavy rain for damaged turf, though the press speculated that non-football events may have also been a contributor.[3][4]
The pitch at Lille received particular attention with players slipping continuously and with groundsmen forced at halftime to try and repair the cut up pitch.[5] Despite UEFA applying numerous methods to rectify the problems, such as a ban on pre-match training on the pitch, use of fertilisers, seeding, mowing, light therapy, drying and playing with the roof closed to avoid rain, it was decided that the pitch at Lille had to be entirely replaced following the Italy-Republic of Ireland group match on the 22nd of June.[6][7] The new pitch was replaced with Dutch grass and was ready before the last sixteen match between Germany and Slovakia on the 26th of June.[8][9][10] UEFA also stated that repair work was also required at the St Denis and Marseille pitches.[11]
UEFA’s Leeds-based consultant Richard Hayden had come under criticism as it was reported he ordered local groundsmen to re-lay three pitches (Lille, Nice, and Marseille) with Slovakian grass, provided by an Austrian company for an estimated €600,000 (£460,000). On 22 June it was reported that France's grass association officials had blamed Hayden for continued problems with the pitches, citing “it is amazing that it is only these pitches that have problems today”. [12] However, Hayden responded that the pitch in St Denis had kept its existing French grass with its French groundsmen, but that too required extensive repair.[13] In a statement, UEFA rejected the criticism against Hayden as baseless and stated they were satisfied with his work.[14]

Semi-protected edit request on 7 July 2016

Sacage (talk) 20:35, 7 July 2016 (UTC) i should put griezzman scored 6 goals

Already done — Andy W. (talk ·ctb) 21:16, 7 July 2016 (UTC)
At the time of the edit request the game was still in progress, so at that time of course it should NOT be 6 goals for Griezzman, what's the sense of such requests???--2003:5F:3E57:242C:24B8:8A61:4CEF:4F74 (talk) 21:21, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

Tournament team rankings

This section is being disputed due not having an published source. However, if you look for the previous FIFA world cup tournaments (such as 2014 world cup) there are no sources given for that either as it just the calculation of points. As this is the first EURO's to have 24 teams it is the first time that is considered suitable to have this table. The table is currently commented out of the main article. Discuss? - MetalDylan (talk) 10:30, 18 July 2016 (UTC)

2014 FIFA World Cup#Tournament team rankings does have a source. Click [100] at the end of the opening sentence to see it:
  • "Final Tournament Standings". FIFA.com.
The link is dead but has been archived at [7] which confirms that FIFA published these standings. If UEFA doesn't rank teams which reached the same stage then neither should we. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:57, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
Indeed, just because FIFA officially ranks the teams that enter the World Cup doesn't mean that we should use the FIFA formula to rank the teams involved in this tournament. Don't be surprised, however, if UEFA releases an overall ranking at some point in the next month or so, along with the technical analysis of the tournament. – PeeJay 11:27, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
It would be very surprising, if UEFA will release an overall ranking, to do so, they had to have rules for that in the tournament regulations and UEFA never released an overall ranking for previous tournaments. Do not conclude from one tournament to another!!! FIFA has rules in their tournament regulations to rank teams and so they release an overall ranking. UEFA like most (all?) other continental confederations never does!--2003:5F:3E66:1764:851B:9B29:C54F:DAC3 (talk) 14:28, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
I don't know who started this trend, that apparently points are given in knockout games and then tallied up. '''tAD''' (talk) 14:32, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
@2003:5F:3E66:1764:851B:9B29:C54F:DAC3: I'm on your side, bro, chillax. The table should be removed (not just commented out), I'm just saying that if UEFA release their own ranking, which wouldn't surprise me, it would be okay to restore it here. – PeeJay 23:10, 18 July 2016 (UTC)

Slovakia debut?

It's strange that the Czech Republic has the Czechoslovakia era as their own whilst Slovakia is not included in the history of Czechoslovakia. Where there no Slovak players in the teams that competed under the name Czechoslovakia?

83.250.25.39 (talk) 08:36, 21 July 2016 (UTC)

For some reason, and don't ask why because it's never been officially revealed, UEFA and FIFA consider the Czech Republic to be the sole successor to the history of the Czechoslovakia team. Unfortunately, that means that although we know that Czechoslovakia was made up of two equal nations, we can only actually report one nation as having competed in the European Championship before, whereas Slovakia technically made its debut this year. – PeeJay 08:52, 21 July 2016 (UTC)
The place containing the national capital seems to inherit the record, as in the case of Yugoslavia/Serbia and USSR/Russia. I guess FIFA give breakaway countries like Bosnia and Ukraine a "clean break" to avoid legitimising a controversial government over them. But as is known, the split of Czechoslovakia was nowhere near as bitter. '''tAD''' (talk) 18:15, 21 July 2016 (UTC)
