Talk:Towne Lake
Comments
[edit]So where is (or was) the lake known as Towne Lake? Also, is Towne a "gratuitous 'e'" form of the word "Town" or was it someone's proper name? I've always been curious. Scott Johnson 19:05, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
- So far as I know, it was just a generic name. --KickTheDonkey 19:19, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

--Relisted. 71.204.92.48 (talk) 17:02, 18 October 2015 (UTC) Towne Lake → Towne Lake, Georgia Towne Lake is one of the biggest unincorporated geographic communities in Georgia. It is a commercial area surrounded by residential. It borders the city of Woodstock and has a Woodstock mailing address, but is absolutely recognized as its own community. Towne Lake fits the definition on USPLACE perfectly and is much more of a community than most communities already listed. As a resident of this community, I'm finding this "debate" to be extremely frustrating and question the future role of Wikipedia, but I understand that this is being debated by people who do not live here. So, here are a few local links that might help: http://www.townelaker.com ; https://www.redfin.com/neighborhood/192224/GA/Woodstock/Towne-Lake ; http://patch.com/georgia/woodstock

Towne Lake → Towne Lake, Georgia – Consistency with other town and community names in Wikipedia: (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Unincorporated_communities_in_Georgia_(U.S._state) Plus, GeoLocater pulls in article title, which is incomplete without "Georgia". - Oppose. For any US place with a unique name, like Towne Lake, specifying the state is unnecessary for disambiguation or any other reason. --В²C ☎ 22:19, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
- Support for consistency with other articles in same categories or linked via templates (for example, Ball Ground, Georgia), and with naming conventions. The state name is included in the titles of 271 of the 274 articles in Category:Unincorporated communities in Georgia (U.S. state); exceptions are Lake Arrowhead (Georgia) (which is primarily about a lake), Serenbe and this article. - Support per WP:USPLACE. Articles on populated places in the United States are typically titled Placename, State and this is not one of the exceptions listed in the AP Stylebook as not requiring the state modifier. Zarcadia (talk) 17:56, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose. Not town or community, and the "Georgia" is unnecessary for disambiguation.--Cúchullain t/c 13:39, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose. Not convinced USPLACE applies here, have all those citing it actually read the article? Jenks24 (talk) 16:13, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

Populated place?
[edit]WP:USPLACE applies to articles about populated places, but a community (which is how Towne Lake is described) can be either a populated place (and subject to that guideline) or part of a larger one. Is Towne Lake a separate place (as suggested in this article) or part of Woodstock (as described in that city's article)? Peter James (talk) 19:38, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
- Support per WP:USPLACE. Towne Lake is an unincorporated community (not within Woodstock city limits) with a Woodstock mailing address. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.160.98.94 (talk) 20:01, 22 September 2015 (UTC)
- Comment. I entirely support USPLACE, but looking more deeply into this I see that Towne Lake is notably absent from the reliable sources we use to define recognized populated places: the USGS GNIS[1] doesn't list it and I can't find it in US Census Bureau records. It appears in Google and Bing Maps[2], but is labeled in the same fashion as the many other surrounding neighborhoods.
While it's been our practice to accept recognized towns and villages in the US as inherently notable, neighborhoods or other such minor localities generally aren't unless one can show some modicum of support in RS... and the RS for this one are scant at best. The article sites no sources, and (with the exception of a local business association) the external links don't specifically address Towne Lake at all. I myself can find hardly any RS that deal with it. In short, this particular place may not meet our geographic notability requirements to even be an article. ╠╣uw [talk] 19:20, 26 September 2015 (UTC)
- Support per WP:USPLACE. Towne Lake is one of the biggest unincorporated geographic communities in Georgia. It is a commercial area surrounded by residential. It borders the city of Woodstock and has a Woodstock mailing address, but is absolutely recognized as its own community. I have also noticed the Google maps labeling and have reported it as an error.
