Photographs
[edit]I have removed the following text from the article because I don't see it as being part of the article but a problem that should be discussed on the talk page.
- "Photos of McGinty can be found here, they have not been uploaded due to copyright concerns and a lack of being able to contact the owners of said site."
The URL should be cited like:
- Dubelko, Jim; Pianka, Raymond L. (research support). ""Black Jack" McGinty - From the Old Angle to the Desert Inn". Cleveland Historical. Cleveland, Ohio: Center for Public History + Digital Humanities, Cleveland State University. Retrieved 13 February 2022.
If one reads the terms of use of the website, the publishers state:
- "Photographs in the Cleveland Historical website and mobile apps are used with the expressed permission of their creators, owners, or other caretakers (for example, a library or archive). Sources are cited in the captions for each image. For further information about photographs, including requests for reproductions, please contact the listed source directly. Please note that we cannot give the contact information of private individuals, nor are we empowered to grant permission for further use of any photographs."
In the light of this statement on the website, I think there is no point attempting to obtain permission to reuse any images because the website owners or operators do not have the power to grant such permission. Solutions to the article lacking an available photo include:
- Adding the above website URL as an external link or properly citing it as a source of the article, (and not just linking to the raw URL with a non-descriptive word like "here", which is prone to link rot.)
- Identifying where the above website obtained its images from. As those sources might have images available with a compatible copyright from their own original sources, or even have other images available that could be used.
Finding images for Wikipedia articles is definitely not as simple as finding a suitable image on the web and asking to re-use it. Often, there are going to be copyright issues, so while an image may be requested, sometimes, supplying an image is not always possible nor practical. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 01:55, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
