Nietzschean link? Really?

[edit]

"Friedrich Nietzsche's concept of going beyond the limited types of human beings that have so far existed by loving Dionysian vitality and life ("the mother") while rejecting Apollonian systems and traditions ("the father")."

This is wrong or misleading in what the two gods represent in the works of Nietzsche. Neither god is necessarily those things. The Dionysian is the indulgence in more primal urges. Apollonian is mans aspirations for great things. Both can be "vitality and life". Perhaps this should be rewritten. (139.57.206.54 05:16, 17 April 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Is it worth noting that there are two different versions of the song out there?—Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.153.243.180 (talkcontribs)

There are several versions of this song that have been released by The Doors and other audience recordings in circulation. Jim Morrison generally improvised the lyrics while performing The End. There is only one studio recorded version.

Isn't there a censored and an uncensored version? (The censored version excising the profane chant during the crescendo near the end.) 24.6.182.227 00:00, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bass Line

[edit]

I-V-VIII? VIII is not used in music theory. If this is supposed to be an octave higher than I it is still I, or perhaps it is a typo for VII.

"Blue Bus" was most likely referring to 10 mg blue numorphan tabs - at the time a popular drug nicknamed the "Blue Bus". Similar to Vicodin in effect.

More critical commentary than encyclopedia article

[edit]

A lot of unsourced POV opinion in this article. A fine essay, but is it encyclopedic? I would recommend a thorough clean up. Seaphoto 16:57, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"F***"

[edit]

The word "FUCK" is not herd on the end of the song. I downloaded it on I-TUNES and did not hear it

On every studio issue of this song, I believe the Oedipous section is the same: "Father." "Yes son?" "I want to kill you. And mother...I want to..." and then he just screams. However, about nine minutes into the CD version I own you can clearly and audibly hear Morrison say the word fuck about fifteen or twenty times. This is not the same on every issue. On the cassette version my dad aquired sometime in the 80's they all but edited this part out. You can barely hear him say it if you listen closely, but if this is how it sounded on the original vinyl edition from 1967 (and I'm guessing it is) then I doubt many people knew about it at the time unless someone found out by coincidence and word of mouth spread.

You can only hear the word fuck on the Legacy Album. Same thing with hearing Break On Through. Except it's not the word fuck on Break On Through it's "She Get High". Which is interesting to me because they seemed to have gotten away with saying "higher" on Light My Fire. That's for a different discussion though.

Blenders 50 Worst Songs List

[edit]

Why is it that every time I add that this is on that list someone deletes that? It is on the list. If you are going to delete that you might as well delete that it was on Rolling Stone magazines 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

it sickens me but the brain dead idiots who know nothing about music put it at the 26th worst song ever. [1]. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.156.66.110 (talk) 09:22, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It is what it is. A list. And as much as I love RS and find them right the overwhelming majority of the time, an opposing view is nice once in awhile. It was voted one of the worst songs in Blender; that's a fact, no? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.36.196.211 (talk) 04:42, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry. In rants as the one above, just replace "know nothing about <insert artform here>" with "don't agree with me". That's what it is about. My 9-year-old niece -- bless her heart -- explained to a family aquaintance of ours (a 66-year-old music professor on a pension who's literally been studying and playing music for more than half a century) upon him seeing a picture of 50Cent (I believe) and then asking "Who's this fellow, then?". Her answer? "Oh, you know nothing about music." Make of that what you will. I still think it's a cute story. Tirolion (talk) 19:51, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Nearly ten years later, I’m going to pull the statement. Time gives perspective: Blender is long defunct, and little-remembered. The statement is meaningless and adds nothing to our understanding of the song. Jusdafax (talk) 17:06, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"Taking a Face From the Ancient Gallery"

[edit]

This probably is a Roman allusion, because Roman families often kept death masks of their ancestors in a place of honor (an "ancient gallery"). Cranston Lamont (talk) 19:42, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Or, more prosaïcally, taking down one framed photograph from the traditional staircase array of portraits of family members. The photograph of a dead brother, perhaps.

the blue bus and the people's temple

[edit]

There could also be a connection between the lyrics in the song and the Cult created by Jim Jones known as the Peoples Temple. The buses used by the cult to bring more members out "west" for their eventual mass suicide of "siblings, mothers, and fathers." What are you saying, that Jim M in 1967 predicted that Jim J and his followers were going to commit suicide in 1978 ? That's preposterous and sounds a lot like original research. Without a citation this has got to go . -Sticks66 03:01, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Plagiarism in this article

[edit]

Everything in the "Music" section was plagiarized from http://books.google.com/books/about/Nico_Songs.html?id=4nuASwAACAAJ, as was material in the introduction. I removed the Music section's contents because of the plagiarism. It was already flagged as having an un-encyclopedic tone. It needs to be re-written in an appropriate tone, citing sources properly. 76.218.68.67 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 06:39, 11 October 2011 (UTC).[reply]

Recording Time of The End, August 1966

[edit]

At the time The End was recorded, the USA just suffered its notable mass shooting by sniper Charles Whitman, a native Floridian and UT-Austin student, on August 1, 1966. Whitman entered the bedroom of his Austin's mothers home, killed her by smothering with a pillow, then went to his Austin home, stabbed his wife to death while she's asleep, then drove to the UT Tower, loaded with weaponry and bullets. He shot dead at least 14 people and injured dozens by sprayed bullets. I'm sure these killings had an impact on Jim Morrison's mindset and his voice tone in this recording (he also, like Whitman, a native Floridian). 142.202.201.11 (talk) 19:43, 7 June 2024 (UTC) I have proof of the shootings if the need to be added to the article. This info should be put in the first paragraph near the fist citation.[reply]

We don't do trivia, or conjecture. You have verifiable proof that the shootings influenced Morrison? - FlightTime (open channel) 19:55, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Quick Question

[edit]

I have always been wondering the question if "The End" by The Doors (along with the songs Riders On The Storm and When The Music's Over) are examples of extremely early Progressive Rock and I have wanted to add "Progressive Rock" to the genre section of all three songs. Are the songs more into the Psychedelic Rock and Art Rock section, is it mostly Progressive Rock, or is it a mix of all three? If no (they are NOT progressive rock), then I will not add "Progressive Rock" into the genres of all three songs. If yes (they are early examples of Progressive Rock), then I will add them.
