Cleanup
[edit]I put in new headlines and reorganised the article a bit, but I dunno if I should remove the cleanup tag or not. The page needs a song info box, I think...but I wouldn't know how to put one of those up. --Gromreaper 03:56, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
Infobox and such
[edit]I tossed in an infobox, but I know very little about the single, so I couldn't add much. I'd appreciate anything anyone can add in.
Also, we can't have the lyrics there like we did. The Son Of Nothing 15:49, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Genre
[edit]According to wikipedia's own website this is, in fact, a country song.
See Charlie_Daniels:
"Daniels won the Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance in 1979 for "The Devil Went Down to Georgia", which reached #3 on the charts."
Stephen Lynch
[edit]In Stephen Lynch's song "Beelz" (about a flamboyant version of Satan) he makes a joke stating that the devil "would never be caught dead in Georgia" (after imitating the Charlie Daniels Band briefly) This isn't really a parody, and i'm not nearly good enough at editing wikipedia to add it in a relevent section.
Spoilers?
[edit]Do we really need a spoiler warning? It's a song for crying out loud. Ungovernable ForceGot something to say? 06:31, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
Devil went to Jamaica

Coyote Ugly
[edit]Should there not be some reference to the song being A) Used in the movie Coyote Ugly (film) as the main bar song, but more importantly that this is one song that every Coyote Ugly Saloon bar uses for the girls to get on the bar and do their routine? I think it's worthy of the recognition. Don't you?? Timclare (talk) (sign here) 02:28, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:MillionMileReflections.jpg
[edit]Image:MillionMileReflections.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Covers/Adaptations/Parodies Sections
[edit]Since I was reverted, I'll go here. Please cite those sections, and show how they are important to this article. Otherwise, they will be removed per WP:V and WP:TRIVIA. seresin | wasn't he just...? 00:35, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
- I more or less second this, except I wouldn't be too hasty flat out removing them. Obliterating them will only serve to offend and aggravate the regular editors and I don't want to see edit warring here. As it stands, the tags should stay, if no improvement or attempt to trim, prune, integrate, or improve said sections is seen, then we should consider deleting the most trivial parts flat out. Wisdom89 (T / C) 01:13, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
- I concur with the sentiment expressed above. There is some good information in these sections that I would hate to see removed and should remain in the article in some form, but in its present form it has too much. It needs to be pared down, and some of the less important or more tenuous entries removed, and these three sections combined into one or two. At a minimum, the Covers and the Adaptations sections look like they could be combined. --Mwalimu59 (talk) 06:02, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
- Very little of the content in the sections I listed is relevent. In addition, it is not cited. seresin | wasn't he just...? 01:56, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
I've added the examplefarm template to the header as I believe it more concisely addresses the problem of having too many adaptations/covers/parodies than the trivia tags did. I've also removed the comments about Guitar Hero since they seem overly pedantic. We can add some of those back later if that particular problem rears its head again. --Mwalimu59 (talk) 17:20, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
Has there been any significant progress on this discussion since February? This article is a mess. There isn't even consistency among the headings (the covers are all mixed with cultural uses). I'm going to be a bit WP:BOLD and clean it up. Movingboxes (talk) 11:24, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
Okay, please take a look and let me know what you think. People might have questions about removing the Tenacious D stuff. My reasoning was that the devil vs. human motif isn't all that uncommon and I don't feel that "Tribute" is directly inspired by the song (and Tenacious D haven't, to my knowledge, said that it is. I also trimmed the level of detail on some things, reasoning we don't need to know how the various battles worked out on, say, Futurama or Robot Chicken. Again, I'm not trying to come take over the article, but just get things going towards improvement with the end goal of a better article. Movingboxes (talk) 11:45, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
Cover, additional information needed
[edit]I've heard a song on the radio called "Manuel Went Down to Georgia," a parody cover likening the devil to illegal immigration, and I think it deserves a mention here. However, I wasn't able to find any additional information, such as who made it, so I don't know if it can go in. Dukeofwulf (talk) 17:27, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
"Other versions and parodies" again
[edit]It's growing and taking on a life of its own again...now as long as the whole rest of the article. Do we really need to include every non-notable song by non-notable musician who has made reference of this original? I propose as a minimum guideline for inclusion that there must be notability, as demonstrated by bluelink, for the artist. If a band isn't verfiably notable at all, it's not notable for its use of TDWDtG either. Thoughts? DMacks (talk) 20:59, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- I agree. Even though I'm a trivia geek I think that the "References in Pop Culture" sections of many wikipedia articles are overblown and perhaps unnecessary. Do we really need to know that Peter Griffin whistled half a bar of a particular song in an episode of family guy, or that you can hear it playing in the background of a particular movie scene for three seconds? Someone commented in the discussion section of another artice that South Park had parodied everything...it doesn't really add anything to say that such and such was mentioned on south park. And you could add The Simpsons and Family Guy and Robot Chicken. I love animation, but it does seem to induce a geeky obsession with minutiae.PurpleChez (talk) 12:47, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
There is a version of the song called "The Devil Came Up to Michigan" by KMC crew which might be a parody or an homage, or just a version. Not sure how to work it into the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.119.128.3 (talk) 23:07, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
The Devil Came up to Michigan is a glaring omission from the cover section. This cover (with modified lyrics) brought the song into an entirely new genre, new audience and new decade which is much more notable then covers which simply redo the original country style. I don't know anything about the band but found it here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwV7W_FFTCA — Preceding unsigned comment added by 100.0.11.109 (talk) 06:17, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
A lot of people screw this up but it's actually "The Devil Went To Jamaica" there's no "down" in the title, and it's been airing on the Dr. Demento show since August 1998. http://dmdb.org/cgi-bin/search_pl.pl?titleartistid=MSCF05P03 Hg3300 (talk) 05:11, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
The sims
[edit]In the sims 2 if you die you challenge the devil to a fiddle contest, dunno if it should be mentioned or not
Primus Cover
[edit]If we're going to note covers, shouldnt Primus be acknowledged? Their version complete with elaborate stop motion animated video is probably the best known cover of the song. Im curious why it isnt mentioned anywhere in this article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.151.150.18 (talk) 23:12, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

Original research
[edit]I've deleted a large proportion of the Musical references section, as it appears to be original research. Until it can be shown (with sources) that Daniels consciously based the lines on lyrics from these other songs, the removed paragraphs do not belong in the article ~dom Kaos~ (talk) 14:37, 16 July 2016 (UTC)

Fiddle or Electric Viola
[edit]I was listening to Paul Shaffer's day in rock on 97x, Moline Illinois and he said that this song actually uses an electric viola rather than a fiddle as what is mentioned in the song. Anyone have any info to back this up? I tried google and got nowhere. Jakob9999 (talk) 13:50, 2 May 2017 (UTC)
reverted link
[edit]I posted a link earlier, which got reverted;[1] I won't restore it, but it's a cover under a standard mechanical license afaik (I remember the performer mentioned that he uploads his stuff through DistroKid which handles that). I put it on the talk page because I thought the usual standard for including in the article was a secondary source showing notability, which might show up through web searches (now or later) and I haven't tried to research it to any extent. Looking at the existing cover list, though, several are similar direct youtube links. So I'm inclined to add this one: it's an all-instrumental bass-focused cover that's very listenable. I'm not aware of a concept of a verified youtube channel and I don't see any indication that the existing ones are verified. I just don't see any reason to suspect a copyright issue here. 2602:24A:DE47:BB20:50DE:F402:42A6:A17D (talk) 06:07, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

This song is a cover of "reel du diable" (in english "devil`s reel")
[edit]There's no mention that this song is a cover of "reel du diable" recorded at least as far back as 1960 https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean Carignan https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=iEh-ZETrGYg&feature=share and is folklore music in Québec. However it starts by saying the melody was composed in 1975 which is wrong. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gxtaillon (talk • contribs) 15:59, 5 June 2022 (UTC)
