Dedication of the church
[edit]The section on replacement of the church seems misleading to me. The present church building was surely built as the Church of St Mary (and commonly called “St Mary the Docks”) and assumed its present dedication only after St Stephen’s in Mount Stuart Square was closed (1980s ?)Ntmr (talk) 14:43, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
I have made a correction along the lines of the above. If anyone can confirm precisely when the dedication to St Stephen was added to the dedication of St Mary's then it would be good to have it added with an appropriate reference.Ntmr (talk) 15:07, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
- It's a notable church waiting for its own Wikipedia article really. If you believe the The Point, Cardiff article, St Stephens was deconsecrated in 1992. Sionk (talk) 21:27, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Sionk: I suspect the process of transformation of St Stephen's may have extended over a number of years. I attended a Shakespeare play there in 1986. The venue was still called St Stephen's, but, speaking from memory, it already had tiered seating installed then, and it had the appearance of a modern theatre space rather than a church. Possibly some services were still being held there then. But I think you are likely to be right over the date of 1992: I would not expect the Church in Wales to add the dedication to St Stephen until after the original church bearing the name had been deconsecrated. There are two or three other examples of that happening in and around Cardiff. It is misleading that editors refer to it out of context by its present name of "Church of St Mary and St Stephen" when, until comparatively recently, it was always "St Mary's Bute Street", or "St Mary the Docks".
- The article on The Point refers to it having closed as a music venue, but gives no indication of what it is now. Google Maps shows to it as the Imam Ali Centre, so I presume that it is now a mosque.Ntmr (talk) 19:00, 22 July 2021 (UTC)
