World record?

[edit]

The article states that The world record is 46 metres. Is that record Delap's or someone else's? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.30.129.22 (talk) 15:40, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This record belongs to someone else, Delap's throws average 38 metres. Matt G (talk) 01:06, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The record is here. [[1]]74.9.225.178 (talk) 20:38, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Crowd noise during Delap's throw-ins

[edit]

This is one of my favourite paragraphs ever on Wikipedia:

"It is now a normal occurrence to hear the Britannia Stadium home fans initiate a constant and expectant "woo"-sound (similar to that often heard at football grounds as a goalkeeper prepares to take a goal-kick) that gradually increases in volume and pitch from the moment Delap positions himself with ball in hand by the touch-line until the player embarks on his run towards the line and launches the ball on its airborne trajectory towards the opponents' box from his firm grasp. At that precise moment, the fans' sound concludes with a sharp synchronal climactic roar of "wahey". This both co-exists with and contributes to the suspense and anticipation that surrounds the overall technique and experience of witnessing the throw-in. For opposition defenders, it adds an element of psychological anxiety to the already tough physical task of defending against the throw."

It's academic, entertaining, enlightening and almost poetic. But I fear that some killjoy will take the view that it's not boring enough for Wikipedia and delete it from the main article, so I'm pasting it here for posterity. Russ London (talk) 08:35, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree! It's a tad superfluous but let's keep it please. Prylon (talk) 20:01, 10 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That whole section about the throw-ins is fantastic. That's the kind of stuff most articles on football players lack, despite the abundance of sources. 86.8.176.85 (talk) 12:42, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

GA Review

[edit]
This review is transcluded from Talk:Rory Delap/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

Hi, I'll be reviewing this. Before even starting to review the prose and other criteria, there are some obvious concerns that should be adressed.

  • The lead is not long enough, and does not summarize the article
  • The first block of text under "Career" is unsourced
  • Almonst nothing is written about half his career, namely from 1994 to 2001. This is the most serious concern.
  • Many statements are unsourced, including the claimed length of his throws
  • The "International career" section is thin
  • The career statistics are somewhat dated (from December 2008)
  • Most of the section "Personal life" is unsourced

This is not enough to quick-fail the article, but the article has a long way to go before it can be considered as a Good Article candidate. Nonetheless, it will be put on hold for a week. Punkmorten (talk) 11:42, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No improvements. Failed. Punkmorten (talk) 09:03, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Seems Wenger's opinions have changed: http://www.espnstar.com/football/premier-league/news/detail/item404284/Wenger:-Rory-Delap-is-dangerous/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.254.86.183 (talk) 18:07, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Article

[edit]

Should at least be B-class Spiderone (talk) 15:39, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I wouldn't rate it any higher than "start" as it focuses far too much on his throw-ins. Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 18:20, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

List of throw-in assists

[edit]

I have added the "incomplete list" tag as Delap's throws led to goals for Southampton and probably for Sunderland. Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 18:18, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any footage of his throws back at Southampton and Sunderland? I think they are primarily focusing on his throws since he started playing in the premiership.71.101.167.210 (talk) 06:56, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

He played in the Premiership with Southampton. Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 07:39, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Although he did play in the premiership with a number of teams before Stoke, i honestly don't think they used his throw to their advantage. After looking through numerous match reports, it doesn't seem his thrown led to many goals before Stoke.92.14.223.155 (talk) 09:57, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can assure you that there were several occasions at Southampton when his throw-ins caused havoc in the penalty area, some of which resulted in goals, but I don't have the time to find match reports. Personally, I think this whole section is highly over-blown. We don't list every corner kick that leads to a goal, so why this fuss about his throw-ins? Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 12:53, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I see your point, but i guess it's because it's out of the ordinary. I know other players have long throws, but i don't recall many of them being covered in the media as much. It's just a different element added to the game that people get excited about. It's also how he will be remembered in the future.92.8.231.206 (talk) 19:31, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Highbeam research

[edit]

There are many articles that include old Delap throws, but it's a subscription site, thus can't really be referenced. Although the text comes up on a Google search, Highbeam only shows a certain preview. Any way around this?71.101.62.13 (talk) 14:03, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Move back to north east?

[edit]

The second paragraph states 'before moving back to the north east at Sunderland.'. Which North East club did he come from? Or where did he come from in the North East, before moving back to it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.153.6.125 (talk) 12:28, 16 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
