Roman circuses and Greek hippodromes
[edit]How do we distinguish between Roman circuses and Greek hippodromes? The "circus" in Constantinople is usually called a hippodrome, but I am unsure of its origins.
Is the Plovdiv "stadium" actually a Circus?--SkiDragon 22:54, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
A good resource is "Roman Circuses: Arenas For Chariot Racing" by John H. Humphrey. I will try to go through this book and add some examples.--SkiDragon 23:59, 19 May 2007 (UTC)
In addition, not all Roman circuses are of the monumental, stone variety. Some chariot races were simply held in fields, and some only had a few stone elements. From the book I will only take the "securely attested circuses".--SkiDragon 01:04, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
Caesarea Maritima has two structures that have been called circuses, one right on the coast and one further inland. Both look like potential candidates. Does this city have two circuses or is one the "right" one? If so, which?--SkiDragon (talk) 06:46, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
- These remains problematic. There really isn't any distinction; the two terms are just in different languages. For example, the Circus Maximus in Rome was completely un-monumentalized for most of its early history, so it's not a matter of the thing being built up. It's also clear that Hippodrome is just the Greek translation of Latin Circus, and vice versa. I'd suggest merging the two articles. - Eponymous-Archon (talk) 18:25, 17 February 2022 (UTC)
Circus vs. Hippodrome, Image
[edit]I think citation is needed on comparing the sizes or even citing the sizes of Circuses, as the hippodrome and circus articles seem to have been in dispute as to which was generally larger. I removed the comment from here until citable.
Additionally, I think this article could really use a rendering of what a circus actually looked like back in Roman times. I didn't understand what the article was trying to say with the shape and the Spina until I found an image of a model of the Circus Maximus in its hayday. This kind of image would definately make the concept clearer. Anyone have any idea where this kind of image could be procured? TheHYPO (talk) 07:01, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Need confirmation
[edit]The following locations were identified by a user on Google Earth, but I can find no confirmation.
From the "high-res" list
- Pelusium, Egypt
- Isthmia, Greece (see: Temple of Isthmia)
- Two in Balsa, Portugal (see: Balsa (Roman town); and Balsa Roman Circus)
From the "low-res" list
- Jericho 31°51′50″N 35°26′24″E / 31.864°N 35.4401°E
- Segobriga, Spain (see: es:Segóbriga at Spanish Wikipedia; and Wikimapia location for the circus)
In addition, I did not include the Circus at Hadrian's villa at Tivoli, because I'm not sure if it "counts" or not. I also, in general, did not include any of the numerous "Stadiums", that probably served a different function.--SkiDragon (talk) 03:35, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Cyberbot II has detected links on Circus (building) which have been added to the blacklist, either globally or locally. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed or are highly inappropriate for Wikipedia. The addition will be logged at one of these locations: local or global If you believe the specific link should be exempt from the blacklist, you may request that it is white-listed. Alternatively, you may request that the link is removed from or altered on the blacklist locally or globally. The "Roman Circus" of Montaperti
[edit]There isn't a Roman stadium at Montaperti. If there was, it'd be mentioned in at least one reliable source. Reliable is something that Wikimapia is not: on that map, some berk has drawn the outline of a Roman stadium on a field to the west of the sheep farm. That field has a permanent mobile irrigation system, a long boom that moves on wheels on a straight track and then swings round and goes back on the other side of the track. The boom and the whole system can be clearly seen on the map, as can the tracks left by the wheels. They do indeed look a little like a Roman stadium …. We use reliable sources for good reason. Part of that reason is to avoid putting bits of silly nonsense in our articles. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 17:11, 17 October 2015 (UTC)
