Non-contigous town?
[edit]I've never heard of a town in New York that was non-contigous...does anyone have or want to make a map of the county showing that the town is such? I find that pretty cool and would love to know if someone has information on how it came about and whether there are other towns in NY like that or if this is unique.Camelbinky (talk) 22:13, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
It's not really non-contiguous. Here is an election map that shows the boundary: http://www.dutchesselections.com/dboe/Maps/Town%20of%20Poughkeepsie.pdf
It wraps around the City of Poughkeepsie. Wilsonjd (talk) 21:55, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for that information, I will go ahead and remove reference to it as being non-contiguous from the disamb page of Poughkeepsie, New York.Camelbinky (talk) 23:57, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
Population?
[edit]There is a discrepancy in this article about the population of the town. One place says 42,777, another says 98,777. Wilsonjd (talk) 21:03, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Requested move 22 October 2024
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: not moved. I see a consensus not to move this article since the current title is WP:CONCISE and WP:CONSISTENT. (closed by non-admin page mover) Safari ScribeEdits! Talk! 04:41, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
Poughkeepsie (town), New York → Town of Poughkeepsie, New York – Parenthetical disambiguation should only be used when there is no natural disambiguator, but there is one — it contains the same information, and it's the official name anyway. - Oppose per WP:CONSISTENT, the current name conforms with existing guidelines applied to all similar articles per WP:USPLACE. estar8806 (talk) ★ 00:42, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose. Like I have stated in other past RM discussions on various other topics over the years, in line with the basic principles of MOS:VAR and WP:CONCISE: Unless it significantly decreases the ambiguity even further than what it does now, I generally do not see a clear and substantial advantage in changing from what has been a very well established and stable parenthetical disambiguation to a natural disambiguation title that has more or roughly the same length of letters/characters. And yes, the current name is WP:CONSISTENT with other U.S. place articles, following the existing guidelines at WP:USPLACE. Not every U.S. place's official name fits neatly into a consistent "City of" or "Town of" format, and they are generally less common than the "placename, state" format. - Oppose per Estar and Zz - New name would only confuse readers and as pointed above the current name is CONSISTENT. –Davey2010Talk 22:12, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
