"Commuter town"
[edit]- The article on commuter town specifically states that it is "where most of the workforce commute out of the community to earn their living" There is no citation for this: is it simply that the editor thought this was the case for Polegate? We really should have statistical backup; and to where do all these people commute? NB 35% of the population are elderly - it says so!
- It "originally lay on the edge of the Pevensey Levels"? I don't think they have moved!
- Commerce means a little more than the shops: what other commercial enterprises are there? this article gives some clues - a high unemployment rate, new industrial park etc

- As a person who has lived in Polegate all my life I can support the argument that it IS a commuter town, with the train station supporting links to Eastbourne, Lewes, London, Brighton and Hastings. I will look for citation --81.77.18.99 (talk) 16:18, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
Editing
[edit]I have now done a complete editing of the article, using the guidelines set out in The Wikipedia notes on writing about settlements, and adding/revising what was originally said. The guidelines give a great deal of help to anyone editing such an article as this, since it keeps to the point and reminds editors of what can be said. When doing the edit, I made the following notes:
- The initial, opening, para should just make brief references to what is in the article, and not try to put everything into it. Sub headings then help to contain ideas akin to each other: the section headed Attractions, for example, included two ideas in one sentence.
- I have excluded the Local Arts section altogether, since there are many people who would look upon graffiti (especially on a road sign or the wall of the Post Office!) as vandalism: in fact a Google brings that out clearly; the MP is very ante graffiti.
- There is no need to repeat facts when there is a perfectly good article saying the same thing, as in the railway section: and the "Cuckoo Line" epithet was not its name, just a nickname.
- Lists should be avoided; text should be in prose.
- Finally, two of the external links were unobtainable; and references should be used instead to back up any statement made.
I hope the above will assist future editors Peter Shearan (talk) 15:53, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
