Henry de Percy

[edit]

Surely something wrong here. How could the castle be FOUNDED by Henry de Percy (1564 - 1632) if it had a 13th century chapel and undercroft?? --Dougatwiki (talk) 20:22, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah! Found the answer! In 1309, Henry, Lord Percy of Alnwick founded the stone castle. The link goes to the wrong Henry de Percy. --Dougatwiki (talk) 20:27, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Henry de Percy may be Henry, 1st Baron Percy created 1298/9, died 1314 who obtained a royal licence to fortify his mansion at Petworth and two mansions in Yorkshire in 1309 according to Peter Jerrome's History, Petworth. From the beginnings to 1660. This implies that the house may have been earlier, possibly built by his father, also Henry de Percy. Castle is probably misleading as it is more likely to have been a fortified manor house than a military fortress. As the 1st baron also purchased Alnwick Castle in 1309 and began major improvements to its defences it is doubtful if he would have had the resources or the necessity to do much at Petworth.--Charles (talk) --Charles (talk) 09:38, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
