Redirect

[edit]

There were two Wikipedia articles about this accident.

I changed this one to redirect to the other one.

Nick Beeson (talk) 15:24, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect corrected so this page is the article. It was Flight 6 aboard Pan Am ship #943.70.253.94.232 (talk) 23:49, 11 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate Articles

[edit]

There were two distinct Wikipedia articles on this topic. I have no way to tell which one was correct. They disagree on the flight number and the date. So I moved the contents of one article into the other article. The emptied article I made into a "redirect" page.

I have no skill at searching through Wikipedia to find all of the references to this accident.

Someone with knowledge about this accident needs to clean up this article.

Size of thumb photos

[edit]

I have chosen to restore the previous size of the thumbs (300px), because the smaller print at the top of the photos was not legible at all, with the smaller sized thumbs. I think it important that we do not make it more difficult for the many older persons, as well as others with visual genetic problems, that don't have perfect 20/20 vision. It is now possible to read the entire captions of those thumbs, and it doesn't hurt the format display of the article itself, by making them legible to all. Discussion about possible move

[edit]

The article says Pan Am Flight 6. What is 943 doing here? Isn't that the aircraft number? Unless there is controversy, I propose a move to "Pan Am Flight 006" Chergles (talk) 19:15, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, TIME says Flight 943. Therefore, it seems like the text of this WP article should be changed. Am continuing research on the matter. Chergles (talk) 19:19, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The CAB Accident report is the original and best source. The flight designation was "trip 6," (not 006), one of Pan Am's around-the-world trips, which began and ended in SFO (or, was supposed to.... ). Someone needs to change the title of this article to "Pan Am Flight 6." Time magazine simply got it wrong, apparently using part of the "N" registration number of the aircraft, as the flight number. I don't know how to go about changing this article to "Flight 6," without screwing up the many links in Wiki, which lead to "943," so I will leave that to someone else, who knows how to make that change. But, it should be done without further delay. EditorASC (talk) 06:50, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It was indeed flight 6. The "943" came from the fleet number Pan Am used for their fleet. Registration N90943 was fleet #943.70.253.94.232 (talk) 00:04, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I am glad to see that the title was finally changed to the correct flight number of "6." However, it seems that a good deal of the history of the revisions to this article, have been lost, possibly as a result of making that change. The current revision history shows no edits at all, from May, 2008, until July, 2009. That is far from accurate, as comparison of these two different revision histories reveals:
[[1]]
[[2]]
I am sure there is some way to fix that error, and restore the complete revision history record, but I sure don't know how to do it. So, anyone know who we should notify in the upper echelons of Wikipedia, so that some expert can repair the revision history record? EditorASC (talk) 11:35, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, those links don't work, so let's try it this way:

New details

[edit]

I have expanded the article based on this news story.[3] Although well written and full of detail, the story does not appear completely reliable in that it contradicts the flight safety foundation website, which is based on the official accident report, as to the time of the crash, how long the plane remained afloat, and the number of injuries. It seems to be based mostly on recollection of the remaining survivors. Perhaps people's recollection is not perfect after 50 years. On the other hand there is a lot of useful detail. The FSF entry does not seem entirely reliable either, and is after all a tertiary source. The Time Magazine article is also inconsistent in a few places. Other details in the article contradicted the FSF report. Under the circumstances I thought it best to state things a little more generally and not to be too specific as to time. Better a general statement that is true, than a more specific statement that may be inaccurate.Wikidemon (talk) 11:00, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have added additional details (including the time of the ditching and the time when it finally sank), as well as extensive re-write, all based on the original and best source: The Official CAB Accident Report, File # 1-0121, adopted July 8, 1957, and released July 11, 1957. It was Flight 6, not 006 and definitely not 943. EditorASC (talk) 14:10, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

USCG film

[edit]

The United States Coastguard made a film about the accident. It is available on You Tube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkR4F3_fEUQ#t=5m17s/. Is there any way of adding this to the article, or will a bot remove the link? Mjroots (talk) 06:53, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, just seen it's already there! (inserts embarrased smiley, goes to find more coffee) Mjroots (talk) 06:59, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Flight number - 6 or 943?

[edit]

Was the flight PA006 or PA943? It is not clear from the article. Please clarify. 84.34.146.209 (talk) 06:06, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This was Flight 6 aboard Pan Am ship #943. Pan Am ship numbers were the last three numbers of the registration. In this case, the registration was N90943.70.253.94.232 (talk) 23:36, 11 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pan Am flight 6 90943

[edit]

I noticed in the crew list you listed a Jan Patterson as a steweress. I was aboard the Pontchartrain during the ditch and am presently a historian of Coast Guard ships. Jan Patterson was listed in error. I have volumns of files on the ditch including all the official correspondance during the ditching. i still keep intouch with some of the crew and passengers

Thank You

Direction of flight? (and aircraft type)

[edit]

The second paragraph states that the flight proceeded EASTward from Philadelphia, via San Francisco, then to Honolulu. Unless there were intermediate stop(s) on the east coast - and I have no way of knowing whether there were, but it seems unlikely - this should be corrected to WESTward. Ian Page (talk) 19:02, 27 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

On looking at earlier versions of this article, I now see the second paragraph previously read -
"Flight 6 was scheduled to leave Philadelphia as a DC-6B and fly east around the globe with many stops (and a change to a Boeing aircraft at Tokyo) to San Francisco International Airport. On the evening of October 15, 1956 the departure from Honolulu was on Boeing 377 Stratocruiser "Clipper Sovereign Of The Skies" (Pan Am fleet number 943, registered N90943). "
This earlier version thus points to a way to clear up the confusion in the current article regarding the type of aircraft: on the other hand, it also directly contradicts the current article's assertion that the plane had transitted San Francisco before getting to Honolulu. But such corrections would be mere (reasoned) speculation on my part: can someone with specific sources please fix the (a) itinerary and (b) aircraft type confusions? Ian Page (talk) 19:46, 27 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Agree entirely. It sounds mighty odd that the last leg of a round-the-world tour should be San Francisco-Honolulu-San Francisco. I'm wanting to improve this article, but can't while the itinerary remains unclear. Valetude (talk) 18:07, 9 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. As it is now written, it appears that the "around-the-world" flight included a leg from San Francisco to Honolulu, followed immediately by a leg from Honolulu back to San Francisco. 69.42.17.116 (talk) 22:36, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Move discussion in progress

[edit]

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Pan Am Flight 7 which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 07:19, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
