I find that one too convoluted to be interesting. And @Onegreatjoke I agree the other ones aren't that eye-catching either, so here's one that's a little more narrative-heavy:
ALT2: ... that upon learning of her grandmother's death while creating an album, SZA memorialized her by having one of its tracks begin with her voice? ‍ ‍ Elias 🌊 ‍ ‍ 💬 "Will you call me?"

For an ALT3, which I prefer the most because it's a little more outside-the-box compared to most song hooks: ... that a woman who died from Alzheimer's was memorialized by her granddaughter through posthumous vocals in a song? ‍ ‍ Elias 🌊 ‍ ‍ 💬 "Will you call me?"

Background

  • "for its vocals and eclectic musical style" nitpick-y but "SZA's vocals and its eclectic musical style"?
    • Tweaked. I prefer "the eclectic".
  • "The roster ranged from Billie Eilish, Harry Styles, and Olivia Rodrigo; to Doja Cat, Drake, and Kendrick Lamar" interesting, but what makes you grouop Eilish/Styles/Rodrigo into one group and Doja/Drake/Kendrick into another?
    • Billie/Harry/Olivia are more of singers, and Doja/Drake/Kendrick are more of rappers. Listing them in an "A, B, C, D, E, and F" format feels flat and uninteresting, and "from A, B, C; to D, E, F" adds more flair.

Music and production

  • I am uncertain if we need to capitalize "Black" as in "Black woman"

  • I'd move "Note 3" one sentence prior and only include the Observer ref for Empire's comment

  • Any particular reason why the names of the critics for Variety (Amorosi) and the LA Times (Wood) are omitted?
    • Not really, I just thought they'd clutter the prose initially, but on second thought there's no harm naming them. Done
