Article title
[edit]The title signal noise is not very appropriate, as it's not a standard term and is not even used in the article. The article is about noise, and the signal should be converted to an appropriate parenthetical. Maybe noise (signal) or noise (information theory). Any other good ideas before I pick a place to move it? Dicklyon 18:20, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
The term "signal noise" is unfamiliar to me as well. However, have you seen how many articles are listed on "what links here" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Whatlinkshere/Signal_noise ) ? I think such a commonly-used phrase deserves its own article (unless it's merely a synonym for some other common term). If many people actually use the phrase "signal noise", and hardly anyone uses the synonym "noise (signal)", let's use the more-common name. (Wikipedia:Naming conventions: "use the most common name").
What do the people who wrote the articles that use this term mean by "signal noise"? Since I can't tell any difference in meaning between the current text of the article and noise, I propose to merge them. I hope that either:
- (a) people who use that "signal noise" will admit that term is really just a synonym for "noise" and allow a merge, or
- (b) people who use that term will refuse to merge, and adjust the article to describe what exactly they mean by "signal noise" in particular. Does "signal noise" refer to something more specific than noise in general, but something less specific than electronic noise in particular?

- That merge proposal will be summarily dismissed unless you start the merge discussion at the page that the tag links to. I'll support it. Dicklyon 15:05, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
- Signal noise is an oxymoron. It's either signal or noise, it's not both. Electronic noise is a much better title. Signal to noise ratio is a topic all to itself. --ssd (talk) 04:56, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
