Awards
[edit]I remember seeing a few years ago the Montgomery Inn won a national BBQ award, first or second place. But I can't find a source or remember specifically. Anyone know of any significant honors they've received that can be added to the article? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikitian (talk • contribs) 20:18, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
Cincinnati vs. Ohio
[edit]Hi, Nyttend -- thought I'd go ahead and start talking! I'm a little concerned that this has been taken out of the category Restaurants in Cincinnati Ohio...I know that they seem to have opened a restaurant in Columbus now, but they're a pretty big fish in the whole Cincinnati restaurant scene. I can go with based in the suburb or Montgomery, but I kind of think if one restaurant in Dublin vs. three in Greater Cincinnati makes them an Ohio restaurant, what does having one of those three in Kentucky make them? Ditto on removing from the category of Cuisine of Cincinnati. valereee (talk) 15:53, 19 March 2016 (UTC)
- As Montgomery is not in Cincinnati, putting this into any Cincinnati category based on the HQ/original site location is fundamentally erroneous. City categories are for things in the city itself, not for things in nearby municipalities or unincorporated communities; this is why the Montgomery Saltbox Houses, the Village of Addyston Historic District, and other suburban locations aren't in the Cincinnati tree, for example. It seems rather excessive to me to put this article into categories for all of the locations, and categorising for several-but-not-all locations would be absurd. - Nyttend Can you point me to the policy on what goes into a city's category having to be inside the city lines rather than what is generally considered to be of that city? It's not that I don't believe you -- I'm sure your knowledge of policy on categorization is a lot better than mine! -- but I need to see it for myself to be able to put it into context and figure out what it means for what I do on WP. For instance, there isn't a Greater Cincinnati category, does that need to be created? Would it be a subcategory to Category:Ohio, Category:Kentucky, and Category:Indiana, since it's in all three states? And I'm seeing that Category:Greater Cincinnati school stubs and Category:Greater Cincinnati sports stubs are subcategories of Category:Cincinnati, Ohio stubs, is that something that should be changed? (I don't mean for you to answer all these questions, just showing you what I mean when I say I need to go read the policy for myself so I'll know how to proceed.) valereee (talk) 10:44, 20 March 2016 (UTC)
- It's common sense: otherwise there's no definition of what belongs and what doesn't. Bear in mind that we have a Montgomery category: are you going to make it a subcategory of Cincinnati? You will find no reliable source that defines Montgomery as a part of Cincinnati, because it's easily provable not to be a part of Cincinnati: categorising something in Montgomery as being in Cincinnati is outright wrong, and it deceives the reader. Stubs are different; as maintenance categories, they're given a rather less formal structure because they're just meant for editors already familiar with the situation, so we need not be as careful about accuracy as we must with content categories. Otherwise, we might as well put John Rankin House (Ripley, Ohio) into Category:Houses in Cincinnati, Ohio, because it's in Category:Greater Cincinnati Registered Historic Place stubs. - Nyttend I'm not trying to deceive the reader; I'm trying to figure out how to do this right. If there's policy, that'll tell me how to do it right. If there's not policy, then my own common sense tells me there's a difference between saying Montgomery is in Cincinnati than saying that the Montgomery Inn -- probably one of Greater Cincinnati's most well-known restaurants outside of the local area, at least if my own experience with out of towners who show up wanting to go there is any evidence -- isn't a Cincinnati restaurant. valereee (talk) 14:42, 20 March 2016 (UTC)
- Saying that a restaurant not based in Cincinnati is a Cincinnati restaurant is deceptive: there's no way around it. Let's take it a different route: does it belong in Category:Restaurants in Cincinnati, Ohio? That's a subcategory of Category:Cuisine of Cincinnati, Ohio (there's no point to putting the article in the higher-up cuisine category), so the real question is whether it belongs in a category for restaurants in the city. Nyttend (talk) 14:49, 20 March 2016 (UTC)
- I'm going to have to argue. If you ask the average person in, say, Dayton or Indianapolis where Montgomery Inn is located, they're going to say "It's in Cincinnati." Only if you ask someone in Cincinnati will you get the more detailed response: "It's up in Montgomery." Both answers are correct. Neither is deceptive. valereee (talk) 16:50, 20 March 2016 (UTC)
- Support for calling Montgomery Inn "Cincinnati based": 1 valereee (talk) 16:56, 20 March 2016 (UTC)
