amazing voice
[edit]What about his amazing voice?
I think Maxwell hasgfsdgdfgdfffffg one of the most amazing voices in R&B history!! He's my modern day Marvin Gaye mixed with his own unique style. Simply Amazing...
== Singer's Real Name
For respect to the artist and his family, please DO NOT place his personal information on this wikipedia page. NewSoulFan4Life 13:00, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
Rivera is not his last name and should be taken off the profile. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.208.162.55 (talk) 21:23, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
I wonder why he didn't just operate under a stage name. -- MaxwellxTug talk contribs email 02:29, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
- Well according to the New York Times, his last name is indeed Rivera. Link: http://topics.nytimes.com/topics/reference/timestopics/people/m/maxwell/index.html So if anyone is looking for a citation, there it is. Unless NYtimes is unverifiable for whatever reason.66.108.40.193 (talk) 03:12, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
Respect to the artist and his family?? The artist is a public figure. Posting his real name is fair territory. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.201.175.87 (talk) 05:30, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
- Leaving out a public figure's full name out of respect for their family or for any other reason is a form of censoring. I think it is noble to respect such wishes in, say, a newspaper or other medium, but it's no go on Wikipedia. — the Man in Question (in question) 23:19, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
According to copyright records, Maxwell's last name is Menard, not Rivera. http://www.faqs.org/copyright/welcome-whenever-whenever-whatever-lonelys-the-only-company-2/
{{editsemiprotected}}
Menard, not Rivera is the artist's last name.
- Not done: this is a tricky one. I can find references elsewhere suggesting that his full name is "Maxwell Gerard Menard Rivera" -- e.g. http://www.pixcetera.com/black-voices/neo-soul-music-stars/29550. That he apparently uses "Maxwell Menard" as his professional name for the purposes of (at least some) copyright registrations does not mean that Menard is "really" his last name. I'm declining to make this change because we have reliable sources indicating that his surname is Rivera. Exactly what his birth name was may remain unclear for a while, and any statement of his "real" legal name should probably have more sources. Tim Pierce (talk) 18:19, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
Whistle register
[edit]Does anyone know which song(s) Maxwell access the whistle register? I know that he hits some high notes, but I wasn't aware that he could sing that high!
Stuns me that almost no one ever mentions Love and Lock you up Fa Days. Very hard to find single, and to me just one of the hands-down baddest, hippest, seductive, jams ever made. Dude, if youre reading this, PLEASE re-issue that on CD!
- Re: Whistle register
I've never seen any type of reference that Maxwell is a whistle singer. Please provide a link to wherever you got this information.
There used to be a website that offered the song Lock U Up N Love Fa Days. I've never heard of Love and Lock you up Fa Days. What's the year on this single? NewSoulFan4Life 17:40, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
Lock U Up N Love Fa Days can either refer to his first single, "'Til the Cops Come Knockin'" or the B-side to "Ascension" found on the single.
External Links Changed to See Also
[edit]All the links that were available before the change were working the last time it was checked. I and certainly not the people who started groups and have websites, do not appreciate having their links thus their hardwork just simply erased like it means nothing. The Latest Maxwell News (Myspace) is a fan site available for diehard fans. Each and every Maxwell fan site and group that is active deserves some kind of recognition. NewSoulFan4Life 09:59, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
- WP:EL lists fansites under 'Links normally to be avoided'. So, as a general rule, I remove them on sight unless there are special circumstances (major fansite for extermely popular subjects). Veinor (talk to me) 15:05, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
- All the sites linked were considered MAJOR fan sites! NewSoulFan4Life
- One yahoo forum has had 38 messages in 7 days; one has had 24, and the last 87. Not a lot of activity. In any case, they're forums, another link type covered by WP:EL.
- The freewebs site doesn't exist.
- The lyrics site I didn't mean to remove.
- Muszewell has next to no content; just some links and a YouTube video.
- "The Latest Maxwell News" is myspace and is also recommended against under WP:EL.
- "The Maxwell Chronicles" has nothing but links, one of which is to a forum with extremely little activity.
- So, as you can see, I can't find any reason to see any of those links as 'major'. Veinor (talk to me) 15:20, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
- You're not looking at this from the perspective of a fan of Maxwell's but as someone who is "working" with Wikipedia.
- "The Maxwell Chronicles" just re-launched and people are asked to visit their DISCUSSION forum.
- Maxwell Fan Forum, MaxwellStyle, and Maxwell Musze Group are all active at the moment.
- "The Latest Maxwell News" is a very influential part of the Maxwell fan community. Regardless of what WP:EL says, it is important. Just as all of these other sites are. Maxwell has been inactive himself as well but these fan sites and groups have kept up with his fans and news on him. To not show them is like a slap in the face. NewSoulFan4Life

MAXWELL'S RETURN
[edit]At present date there is no information as to what is the hold up and the fans are still, after 5 long years, awaiting for his return. Hopefully this is a record company mix up maybe. Rumors can be so hateful and mean. NewSoulFan4Life 17:40, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
- HMV.co.uk have the album scheduled for release on 31-07-06. The album is still "To Be Confirmed": http://www.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?ctx=280;-1;-1;-1&sku=456987. Tbh, I cant see the album being released that early - we'd all know about it by now if it was. Rimmers 17:34, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
- You never know. But I kind of doubt that it will be released so soon without a forthcoming single. Hopefully we'll get an album this year. NewSoulFan4Life 17:40, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
I am new to communicating about Maxwell on any forum. But I was disappointed with the (lack of) content on Wikipedia. Its like they got this straight off the sony music site. And I wish there was more of an outcry about how this artist can "make" 3 albums and still not release them. Oh and please spare me with the "there are other forces working" excuse. Maxwell, I am angrily moving on at this point.68.157.15.167 (talk) 13:49, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
ARTIST CONTRIBUTIONS
[edit]There was a comment about Maxwell helping the image of the black community... I had a problem with this, and since there was NO citation to back up this claim, I deleted it.
- In what way did it say he helped the black community? --Maxwellfan4life 04:53, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
Relationship Status
[edit]There have been a lot of pictures of Maxwell with Dutch supermodel Doutzen Kroes. Are the two dating or just good friends?
- A search was conducted and both Maxwell and Doutzen Kroes were photographed walking together in February 2006, Search Maxwell, Getty Images.
- As far as the two dating, research says it was only a rumor. They could just be friends, he seems to be friends with a lot of models. --Maxwellfan4life 04:51, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

Discography Additions
[edit]Is it possible to add information for some of the singles, such as covers, track listings, etc.? I have most of the singles from the first album and feel it would be of interest to fans who do collect his music. --Johmbolaya
Also can someone please list all the musicians on Maxwell's cd's. I think he uses Sade's band but I know his bass player is or was from DC (not part of Sade's band) but I am not sure if he is still there. But my point is please list all musicians that make Maxwell's music sing. user Orlando —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.33.89.9 (talk) 18:30, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
Father's Ancestry
[edit]- Maxwell's father was Puerto Rican. I know this firsthand as I attended school with him in New York back in the 1990s before he made it big. Furthermore, in 1995 he gave Details magazine an interview where he said he returned to Puerto Rico to meet his father's relatives. To say that he wasn't Puerto Rican is not only a slap to him, but also to his deceased father. --XLR8TION (talk) 02:42, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
Mother's Ancestry
[edit]There have been many claims that Maxwell's mother was either Trinidian, Haitian and even African-American. Unless there are sufficient citations to validate one of these claims, the classification of his mother's ancestry should be listed as "Afro-Caribbean". It maintains a NPOV for the time being. If someone out there has valid, respectable and sufficient references to validate her nationality, please keep her ancestry as "Afro-Caribbean" for now.--XLR8TION (talk) 04:35, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

- That is a review from a newspaper. Not reliable or credible. Please provide several citations on his mother's ancestry, otheriwse a NPOV should remain on article. As for his father's ancestry, he is definitely Puerto Rican. --XLR8TION (talk) 04:53, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
- How interesting that there aren't ANY places on the Internet that mention Maxwell's mother as Haitian which is her nationality. Recently, an unofficial fan group of his on MySpace.com posted old articles/interviews Maxwell did over the past years and in those he STATES that his mother is Haitian. NewSoulFan4Life (talk) 07:18, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
- I agree with you 100%...very interesting. I mean what's the big deal? I'm Haitian and recall several years ago when he did an television interview and STATED that his mother was indeed Haitian. I don't want to start any conspiracy theories but for years anything/anyone associated with the word "Haitian" has negative stigmas attached. I remember when almost everyone was ashamed of being Haitian and even denied our heritage. I feel that many people don't want to associate him with being Haitian because he doesn't fit the stereotypical Haitian 'look.' Please check out his twitter @ http://twitter.com/_MAXWELL_ where he proudly boasts in BOLD letters how he loves the food his mom has most likely cooked for him since he was born. Should he be ashamed of his mother's heritage too? C'mon people! It's 2009! God Bless America and Haiti! :-)

I have requested that his mother's ancestry remain as "West Indian". There are way too many conflicting reports claiming she was Haitian and others stating Trinadian. Until this is resolved, please leave it neutral. While his father's ancestry has been proven to be Puerto Rican, his mother's ancestry still remains a mystery.--XLR8TION (talk) 21:48, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Edit request from 207.38.233.171, 31 January 2011
[edit]{{edit semi-protected}}
Maxwell's first and last names are incorrect. I work with Maxwell's management company, Benchmark, and Maxwell himself has verified that this is incorrect. Please change this "Gerald Maxwell Rivera[2][3] (born May 23, 1973), better known by the mononym Maxwell, is an American R&B artist. He played an important role in the development of the soul sub-genre, neo-soul.[4]" to "Born May 23, 1973, Maxwell, is an American R&B artist. He played an important role in the development of the soul sub-genre, neo-soul.[4]"
207.38.233.171 (talk) 19:08, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
Done Just to clarify, I'm not changing because of your claim to work for Benchmark--that doesn't pass muster as reliable by WP standards. However, neither of the two references had any mention of his full name, and without references (every article I see just calls him Maxwell), I'm going to remove it. I did have to change the order, because articles about people always start with the name first. If anyone else has a reliable source verifying Maxwell's full name, we can add it. Qwyrxian (talk) 06:34, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
GRAMMY
[edit]Maxwell is a two-time GRAMMY AWARD winning musician and artist. In my opinion, that is how the very first sentence of his article should read. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.99.219.148 (talk) 02:42, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
Name
[edit]Did his parents say, “Let’s just name him Maxwell, he‘s gonna be a superstar, so let‘s give him only one name!” Or, does he actually have a given name, different from his stage name? It seems to me like that'd be good info for the article. — gogobera (talk) 04:41, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

I have found content for some of Maxwell (musician)'s orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.
